    My phone battery died very quickly for whatever reason and my mini 2 flew off! I kept my cool, ran inside to try charging to reconnect. Went back outside hoping return to home would work. The DJI controller began beeping and I heard the drone returning overhead. What a relief!

    Another tip for more control when landing is switching the fly mode to cinema on the last few feet. This allows for smaller and smoother moves to get it to land on the pad in case it's a bit off.

I really like the DJI Drones but felt the need to start at a lower price point to learn and be sure it’s a hobby I will enjoy. I really like your videos. Everyone of your suggestions are very practical and super helpful. Also, I have not heard anyone else share these tips. On a side note, your EcoFlow videos were also super helpful and I now own 2 EcoFlow chargers!! Precision landing is not based on visual information but on GPS positioning. The reason for hovering over the landing spot is to give time for the Drone to calculate it's position by using the avalable satelites in the area. The more satelites it finds , better define the landing position.

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  2 года назад +9

      Nope. The final 33 feet of descent is determined by contrast detection. GPS only gets you up to that point, after that the sensors take over and match the contrast it captured at liftoff

    I'd like to see one on what mistakes did experienced drone pilots make that crashed their drone and how new pilots can avoid them. Like for me, I flew too slow under a metal pedestrian bridge with my original Air, and I lost control and it drifted up and broke a couple propellers (still flew home though surprisingly!).
    And good luck on that blizzard that is heading your way too!

    It's a good idea for me to re-orientate the drone in landing so that the drone is pointing away from me as I get low. That way, I don't have to reverse my thinking and/or control movements. It's just one less thing to worry about.

  • @dronebuzz
    @dronebuzz 2 года назад +7

    Well done Russ! Very essential for those new flyers! Ecoflow rocks! (Contrast Count = 13). (Also, I like to re-boot my smartphone before each flight to ensure all apps are closed and the smartphone is refreshed. And, just before take off, I set my smartphone to "Airplane Mode" to alleviate the risk of being interrupted during the flight or while landing by incoming phone calls or text/social media message alerts.) PS. A landing pad can help save props from prop-wash that can kick up tiny rocks and other ground debris that could cause damage and dangerously degrade your aircraft's flightworthiness.

    I have owned drones as a hobby flier, for almost 7 years, just flying around my own neighborhood ,not bothering anybody ,but lately with all the rules they have come up with, it sounds more complicated than when I had my commercial helicopter license. MY Q500 4K homes in on the transmitter ,not the take off spot, on return to home it will come back, land and shut down with no input from me. I enjoyed flying and see it as a small plastic toy, not a full size airplane, like the rules seem to see them. I have not flown them in over a year because of all the scary rules. I am 75 years old now and it seems like every time I find a hobby I enjoy, they regulate it out of my budget.

    Thanks, Russ for all these awesome videos, I'm a 100% beginner, I have never flew a drone before and I'm currently researching everything I should know before I pick up my first drone ever, the new DJI Mini 3 Pro. I wanted to start with this hobby a long time ago but was still uncomfortable regarding safety and losing the drone. With the Mini 3 Pro, I have the feeling it is the perfect compromise between price, features, and safety. So if you want to help beginners like me, everything which helps us to gain confidence to not lose the drone, for example, best ways to avoid obstacles, how to react when losing connection, how to respond in unforeseen situations like sudden strong winds, rain or whatever else can happen. Also maybe a guide for the first settings in the DJI software. And I also counted 13 times "contrast" and I'm actually from Germany, so not sure if I even can take part in this raffle. Wish me luck for my first big challenge with my drone, I'm flying to Madeira island beginning of June where most of the Mini 3 Pro release trailer was filmed and I hope I can also film some of the same or similar scenes. Would be an awesome start for this lovely hobby. BIG THANKS!

    Hi Russ ty for the help here. As winter is ending, yes, I went hiking up to a summit where there were straight cliffs 500 feet down. I was so nervous about sending my drone off the cliff that I forgot to record! I did fly manually back because of severe winds and the trees close to the cliff edge. Will practice more n strive to have fun.. Ken Catskills Ny

    Russ, the hand catching tips are excellent, notability open palm on landing. I've been nipped twice by the blades reaching up with open fingers! We've learned a great deal from you on using drone photography for our channel. Long time subscribers, we love all the videos, keep up the great work! Have an amazing day! Tom & Suzanne

    Hey Russ! I counted 13 times you said "contrast." I watch you from our home in N.E. Florida - near St. Augustine. There are some great tips in this video. For instance I was certainly unaware of the hover at 7 meters procedure. I've had my Mini 2 about a year and feel like you have been my "flight instructor" from the start. I do appreciate all your videos. Thanks!

    The landing pad is a good level, clean and obstruction free spot. I'll always go through menus after turning on so the drone isn't picking up hitchhiking bugs. When it comes to gusty conditions the pad at least can be a safety feature in case a gust gets to it when setting down.

    I will have a DJI mini 2 SE in about a week and have been looking at all kinds of videos to prepare myself and this is a great video for that. I have my Trust cert. & joined a CBO. One thing you mentioned in the video was putting a strobe light on the drone to see it better, I just wanted to let anyone with a sub 250g drone as I will have that if you put anything (such as a strobe) it will put you over the 250g and you will then have to register and have RID on it. Thanks for the review.

    Russ you are so right. I have learned that it is always best to hover about 20 feet above the landing zone for around 30 seconds before going off to fly. This is more true for both my DJI Mini 2 and DJI Mavic Air 2. The Mavic Air 2 will land right on every time. I carry extra SD cards in my fly bags.
