My solo on "It Just Isn't" (working title) by Murph. He's aiming for a full release in the August btw so be on the lookout! If you're wondering how I write solos like this, I first write it all in midi with a 80's style synth lead and then transcribe the midi onto guitar :)

Sounds like the fortieth ring tone scrolling down on an android phone when you're looking for a new alarm sound
somehow that's a compliment
accurate
@tyburvandeezo8218 lol yeah, I mean that already sounds way too awesome (thus out of place) even for a recent cutting edge smartphone.
"40th Ringtone" is a pretty good band name.
“trows guitar out window”
don't do that pls
noo the guitar didn't do anything, just practice more
Nah give it to me i need an electric
the way you spelled it “trow” I could only hear it in Michael Caine’s voice
u know, like in the dark knight
“da bandit…had been trowin em away”
why?
Sounds like a Sonic bonus level :)
I was surprised to see you are not some huge guitar channel given the amount of skill and creativity you have.
But I'm pretty sure it won't take you long to get there.
Good luck!
thanks my friend i hope i will get there
That's exactly the vibes I got, that this sounds like a Sonic stage or so :)
It really does!!! Love it!!
fr XD
Guitar shred elevator tunes.
I'm gonna tell Tim what you did to that guitar
pls do thank u
Dude respect! It's melodic and insanely smooth for all that fretboard moving. 💯
Thanks my friend
There is absolutely NO melody in that solo whatsoever. Whistle it. You can't.
@@karmaandkerosene_musicq tonto eres colega
@@karmaandkerosene_music exactly, it's so all over the place and there's nothing memorable about it.
@@karmaandkerosene_musicDo you.. really think "you can whistle it" is the definition of melody?
I swear, in the last five years I’ve been demoted from slightly above intermediate back to beginner with these young kids on the web just killing it…. They’re beasts! 😆
Dude...don't let ANYONE discourage you. I gladly embrace the fact that at 38 I am officially old. Not because of a number but because I cannot comprehend the "music" of today's youth lol. I heard a lot of things in this video but none of them even resembled the sound of a guitar. I'm absolutely not denying the impressive technical skill on display but it sounds like a keyboard synthesizer. I don't know you but I imagine I would much rather listen to you play and would def choose to jam with you over this talented young man.
@@jasonjones7461 yeah, that’s definitely the right attitude to have, that’s the way I look at it as well. I was being a little bit tongue-in-cheek with my response, although I am impressed by it, but yeah it’s got no life running through its veins, it doesn’t have that core energy and feel so I know where you’re coming from…..I’m 41 so I’m sure we have a lot of the same influences…I would take a dirty garage jam session over this stuff any day.
It’s cheesy sounding to me lol
Aye, I was also confident until I opened youtube. Back to the drawing board. lol
@@Guitarist19887I think that’s the joke the video is making. This style is so played out that it just sounds ridiculous. At least that’s what I think…im old too.
Older Polyphia + old video game music = something I never knew I needed to hear
thank u bro
Or just Mattias Eklundh.
This sounded awful....
= berried alive *
= something I never want to hear again
God I hate this trend, it all sounds like royalty free music.
I love this trend, it all sounds like royalty free music
🤣
Literally lmao technique can't buy taste
@@_ProTrax So true, just because something is technically challenging to play doesn't mean it's pleasant to listen to.
Too many bedroom musicians getting too much attention.
idk why it sounded like a solo with pop + polyphia sounding style + small phrases to keep up with dopamine hits, all at the same time
Edit: Holy shit! 1k likes
cos that's what it was haha
The Henson guitar helps 😉
Guess who’s signature that is😭
"Small phrases to keep up the dopamine hits" yep that summarises it quite well.
@@956-Metal-Gear-Musician ik that I was just talking about the song style it sounded like polyphia
Still making good mileage of that killswitch I see 😂
Haha yeah
@@jamesstentwhich Killswitch do you use?
@@naazrael its a tesi momentary
serious attempt wrapped in a meme presentation, that is indeed very 2024
man i just love your stuff
sometimes i think "why cant i play like that" then i remember i have not much free time, and we do need to practice a lot to get to that level
keep it going bro ;D
Thanks bro, keep practicing and you will get there
Yeah but it lacks quality....Why waste your time playing like this?
@@Sir_Catnip cos its fun
@@Sir_Catnip just stop man. There's nothing "soulless" or lacking in "quality" about this music. That's like saying heavy metal "lacks quality" because it's not bluesy enough. Like what you like but stop pretending everything you don't like is shit.
I just turned my guitar into a coffee table...... This was insanely creative
thanks brother i've seen your vids they're great
This very much is a perfect example of this genre of music to me. This type of music makes for a cool youtube video to watch someone play but sounds nothing like anything I'd ever want to actually listen to.
well sounds melodic and musical enough for my taste
My guitar teacher back in the day when I was a kid would say "would you listen to it whilst driving in your car? If the answer is no, then say no more"
So much respect to all these killer guitarists these days on RUclips and Instagram, you are all incredibly talented, however, i do think whatever genre this is sucks ass.
Lol same
Lol everybody appreciates the fact this takes a lot of skill, but dude this shit just sucks man, its repetitive as fuck
fair enough, you are entitled to your opinion. personally, i like it though :)
It doesn’t even sound like guitar anymore. May as well play keyboard if musicians like this.
@@sinking1902Why does it bother you ? Feels like listening to a grandpa from 1950s that heard distortion guitar for the first time. It was "noise" to them. You are the same grandpas but 80 years later.
The MIDI, videogame-ization of guitar.
dude thats insane! probably one of the most unique contemporary prog guitar solos and techniques ive seen! kill switch made such a difference
I usually hate this kind of style - but with single note stuff it sounds pretty good!
thanks bro glad u liked it
Sounds like a vintage video Game 😅😅👌👌
I love this dude's Berried Alive energy
I want you to know I am literally going to buy a 7 string with a killswitch and a trem because of how cool your ideas are
haha thank you brother you're very kind, looking forward to seeing what you make I'm subscribed with notifications on
!!! An honor! I'll try my best :)@@jamesstent
Kill switch goes hard 🔥
Agreed
Derek Jenny was doing solos like this back in 2011
It's like applying the hardest and most complex ways of playing to sound as generic as possible.
But on the bright side. It gets kids to learn advanced guitar stuff to learn better genres later.
I like how he positioned his kill switch right under his finger so to have fast and natural flowing access to it
Trying really hard to like this mechanical exponential trend of guitar one-upmanship we have now... Not having a great time with it.
It's nothing new, why do you think there was so many shredders in the 80s
Ah yes, one-upmanship. Because there could be no other possible reason for people to want to play this style. Grow up.
I never thought I’d see the day when guitarist of these days make some of our hero’s from 80s and 90s look pretty ordinary .
most 17 year old guitarists these days play at a much higher level than those guys
this is the craziest riff i’ve heard this year and i bet it’s gonna take forever to find one that’s better…! endless talent man
The 80’s and early 2000’s called and they want their video game music back
A kill switch on the THBB10? Insanity
Literally midi/library to physcial instrument is the future of composition and my route. There are way too many variations you can make and some people don't have the time or physical talent to try them all until they find one they like. HOWEVER, you CAN practice ONE really hard when you find it and THAT'S MIDI strength.
all it is what we would get back in the day with Older video game music, all of these albums coming out in this style thats all I can think of, allot sounds like something out of Sonic
This is some amazing playing. Not my style of music at all, but there's no denying the sheer skill here. Well done.
thanks my friend
Bro hands down the best solo I've heard this year and this year already some bangers dropped but this is some next level shit haha
Ur too kind bro
It's nice to see music advancing and evolving.
sounds like a bonus level on megadrive
Music didn’t used to blow.
What happened?!?
In guitar music the need for speed has took over. Speed merchants like yngwie started it and we are where we are now. It is what it is. At least we have a massively large back catalogue to fall back on. The old music is just too slow for the kids of today. Their ears are not attuned to it.
Musicians played in bands. When you play in a band, that suggests you want an audience. Audiences are full of average people. Average people want to dance and/or have background music that’s familiar to get drunk to. If you wanted to record your band, you were stuck with low-tech methods if you weren’t wealthy. If you were lucky you knew someone with a 4 track and you could make a demo tape.
Today, people don’t need bands. They might not even want one. They can play whatever they want and record it easily on affordable software. They can put it on the internet and reach everyone and develop their own niche following. No matter what you play, if you play it well - and you have no excuse not to, you can sit in a room and practice a piece like this for hours and hours without any band mates getting bored - you can find SOMEONE who likes it.
That’s what happened.
It is an utterly soulless guitar tone. Im not hating on the talent displayed in this video, but BB King murders anybody with this style if you care about conveying deep feelings.
yeah agreed bb king is amazing
but im not trying to convey deep feelings
im trying to convey shallow feelings
the feeling of "oh that was cool"
not every solo has to make you cry and tear your soul in two
All sprinkles, no ice cream.
and i loveeeee sprinkless
i too write leads in MIDI and then play them on guitar. i always knew there had to be other people out there doing this before i had the idea, but this is the first time i've seen anyone mention it.
Sums it up perfect. Everything online now is technically impressive, but do I want to listen to it? Nope.
Sounds like 2000s video game music
Thank you !
Sounds like something you'd hear in a 2012 adventure time speedpaint video
Why’s so many ppl hating? Music evolves all the time. It’s funny how every time a new generation of music starts to emerge, there’s always so much hate from the older generation. Anyways, good job man! I really enjoyed it
Spot on. I cant listen to Polyphia for 2 seconds anymore. Guitarists, fitness influencers, models. Everyone on RUclips is so electronically washed of it's impurities that its embarrassing. GIve me 80% as good but 100% real, any day of the year.
All this time I've spent trying to make synth guitars sound like real guitars and you go the complete opposite direction
This actually bangs at half speed.
THAT ARM THROW XDDDD GOLDEN
lol thanks
It's interesting to me how much I've seen people claiming a video is sped up when it isn't, yet nobody mentions in on videos where it obviously is haha
it's not.
just make chiptune, we're not even playing guitar at this point
lol yeah
I like how it sounds like old school game music and sounds modern at the same time. Nostalgic but new.
This blew my mind! Can't wait for more stuff from you!
That kill switch usage is so good, you made me want to install one on my guitar. Thank you!
And ignore all the haters that say your music has "no soul" or "no feel". Soul and feel in music are literally meaningless words that people throw out to try and assert that their taste is objectively correct. "Has no soul" just means either "I don't like this music" or "I'm jealous I can't play like this".
Keep doing you, because if this song is any indicator of what style you're gonna aim for, I'm excited to see what you'll dish out next.
thanks bro, i've realised alot of new videos after this one. Go watch my latest upload please i worked hard on it
You just keep improving bro! This is awesome
thanks my friend
Muy clean tu solo bro, suena muy bien
Gracias !
I didn't click on this for a log time thinking it was going to be boring clickbait but damn that track sounds amazing I love it!
Regardless, coming from a blues based player this is amazing.
i want a killswitch on my guitar real bad after watching this
u should get one bro
That sounded so fire. But jesus that last note almost shattered my ear drum lol.
sorry lol
@@jamesstent worth it bro
It phases my tinnitus lol.
Absolutely amazing to me how the guitar continues to evolve. Look back at the "rock" stars of the 50s and 60s, and the sound is not even comparable.
This is sad but true but also insane at the same time
Metallica reference?
@@lilgru1376 indeed.
transcribe midi to guitar thats such a cool approach to writing solos
agreed
Genre: GuitarPro

I’m always impressed when I see people who these kinds of solos. Your hard work and effort really shows so this is nothing short of praiseworthy.
But yeah - I don’t feel any of the these solos nowadays. A lot of people are saying this sounds like 2000s videogame OST, which is ironic because one of my favourite videogame soundtrack of all time is Silent Hill 2 and that sound *nothing* like this.
Hell, so many of the compositions and guitar riffs and licks on that soundtrack are simple as hell but so impactful and memorable.
Smooth, almost cant tell the edits! Wp!
I like how people say that they can’t remember the melody of the solo and call it garbage unmemorable and cringe because of that but I vibe to this on loop and can sing the melody without difficulty only after a few listens lmao skill issue fr
Exactly. Classical music also had insanely fast/flashy segments but nobody would be caught dead saying classical composers don't compose with feel or emotion
Well executed, really good display of technique... but it sounds like he learned composition from listening to video games. Don't get me wrong, I'd enjoy playing a game that sounded like this.
Sounds like music from 90's video games. OG sonic the hedge hog comes to mind.
Lucas Mann after he takes LSD and decides to write a new Rings album
Slot machine music
What great evolution.
homies gonna be the next guitar legend this is insane!!!!!
bravo
Your playing is so creative and fun to listen to, the kill switch is awesome :D
ADHD guitar for Gen Z'ers. Ain't got NOOOOO soul....
To me, music has to be something that you hum or sing to. Something catchy. Your guitar playing is phenomenal. But with all respect, I cannot hum or sing along with it. Listen to Panic Station by Alan Holdsworth. You can hum it and the bass solo is so melodic. It is beautiful.
this sounds so good that it doesn´t sound real
bro you are amazing
video game type beat, holy shit this is clean as frick wth. u are seriously helping elevate guitar playing for the generation real shit
be like miming to a produced track, never play live ever play for youtube views. yeah thats 2024.
You are super tastful and musical with that killswitch.
Your channel deserves to blow up. Subscribed.
thanks my friend
This is awesome dude I personally rock the 70s solos much more like all of us including you but the skill that is portrayed here is crazy
Keep up the good work
thanks my friend
Great vid, man! Can't hate Polyphia and their 'shred type beat' thing, but I hope the super-mean lead guitar of 90s - 2010s metal doesn't go completely out of style. That's the stuff that keeps me a wannabe to this day.
this new style of playing guitar is very annoying hope it will go soon
Thanks for the feedback ! How do you think I could improve :)
@@jamesstent you know what you like to do and how to bring to life what you feel but no matter what you do be original dont just jump on a trend because it sells or people would listen to it just because it sounds fresh .Art must have depth not just nice shapes on the surface . Be that book that people will never judge it by its cover if it makes sense .I could go for hours about it and I admit that I been a bit mean about it but I just dont like this new style .It is something that repeats itself in many other genres in different ways but doesnt really moves your soul too much . So my point is dont reduce art to just shapes and glitter . Good luck
oh my gosh
lol thank u
I absolutely like solos like these. But there is just something about the nice, simple, and sometimes quite easy solos that are genius af, and have the potential to become iconic and be played by everyone.
The sound of the guitar occurs in accelerated recording mode.
I hate it.
This kind of shit is the worst thing to happen to guitar playing in years.
:(
atp you’re just making the guitar a synth lol
Haha yeah I actually wrote this solo with a synth and then transribed it to guitar
I’m a 74 year old man and this kicks butt!!!
This sounds like a hidden Sonic the hedgehog level
It’s a little bit soulless though, no?
no
@@jamesstent technically proficient, physiologically impressive, sounds great on an iPad.
Musically?
I can’t remember a single phrase played.
Is that not the point of music?
Even the craziest jazz, the nastiest electronic, the most cringe of the big hair rock guitarists played three notes that stuck in my mind/heart, occasionally..
I like an incredibly wide range of music, I’m a multi platinum credited engineer, an ex pro guitarist of some 1500 gigs.. not bragging but trying to justify(?) my opinion, I’m not just an average non 30 year musician passer-by. Wow that sounds cheesy, but I don’t know how else to put truth. 🤷🏼♂️
I’m no authority on anything other than my own opinion, but at least I use more than “no” when I interact with the universe.
You got actual thoughts?
@@jamesstent I said soulless, not shit. And it’s MY opinion.
I’ve recorded mathrock too so it’s not like I’m just old either. 🤣🤣🤣😉
I’m watching your “modern guitar sucks” video and you reference loads of fantastic playing and it made me realise what the difference is, and what (for me) is missing here.
Harmony. It’s a great warm up, or intro.
Every single example you played other than the other younger guy before yours has a much richer harmonic progression underneath/entwined within the solo. This is what I’m saying. They’re emotional because of that rich harmonic progression.
The chord progressions you reference are not stationary, they move, become tense, resolve, and twist but all the time there is a constant harmonic progression behind the solo, carrying emotion.
I realise you’re a young dude and wow man, I can’t play like that after decades but I can listen, and feel, and run a big-ass recording studio 🫡
The control over your limbs is impressive, but to really hit that sweet spot, this piece in particular was lacking the musicality to really showcase the performance, in my opinion. (Opinions are like arseholes, everyone had one lol)
I’m blunt as kcuf and I apologise for that, but I mean well.
If I wanted to troll you, you’d know by now. 🤣😉
Don’t stop, whatever, you’re fucking awesome at what you’re doing.
Dashing through the snow type riff

This is so cyberpunk vibes, love it, u're so talented!!!!
thanks my friend
Set it to 0.75 and it's immediately more gorgeous (to me)!
I don't like this stuff, sounds like a crazy and weird 90s videogame sound
Just play it on a keyboard
No I think it’s fun to play it on guitar
Dude, this is amazing. Catchy, fun, melodic, virtuosic.
It's really nice see a young generation going back to MIDI like sounds and compositions 80's
Yep and I hate how the shit sounds. It's hard, it's impressive, but it's kinda cringe. Plus you forgot to make 90% of it just tapping!
:(
@@jamesstent Aw now I feel bad. I guess I misread the intent being a commentary on "influencer solos" and how everyone makes their guitar sound like a sped up music box or something now. I'm not much of a Polyphia fan but that is a sick Ibanez and I love the use of the kill switch here. You're better than me, I just don't mess with the hyperpop stuff lol.
I hate solos like this.
