This lens is a 35mm 1:2 MACRO lens.I own it. Every MACRO lens I have come across is noisy and slow focusing. This lens is a lot faster than my 1:1 MACRO lens. I bought this lens April 1st ,2022 @B&H on sale for $199.00...great deal! I love this lens!!!!
Hey Dustin, thank you very much for your great reviews. I just switched from Canon to Sony and your videos are helping me a lot in choosing the right cameras and lenses. One question: in terms of image quality: is the Tamron 35mm 2.8 better than the Sony/Zeiss 35mm 2.8?
I haven't directly compared them, but I've seen reviews where they are compared. The analysis was the the Sony had better focus (quieter and faster), but the Tamron was better optically.
Hi Dustin, I watched several videos about Tamron's Lenses. First I precise that I do films more than I take photographs. I got fear after your Tamron's 20mm 2.8 explanation due to the distortion, am not sure to correct it as well as you (I come from journalist camera that have no ISO or changeable lenses), and you mentioned the difficulty for a new one to handle the distorstion. Moreover, I read in articles that Lightroom didn't have the profil of the Tamron's new prime lenses (20 to 35mm) in its base. Well, here is my question : is the Tamron 35mm 2.8 could be a good lens for filming if I need a polyvalent one, to shoot someone drives in a car (shooting his face very close or his hand changing the speed) and just after we stop the car and we are in a landscape and near a farm (in background) and I shot him again in medium shot and then the mountains in a wide shot ? Will I have as much as distortion than in the 20mm 2.8 ? I do thank you for you answer. Best regards
That wasn't my impression. I always compare lenses with other lenses of the same focus length, and I will pick up if a lens is wider than stated. Part of the reason that the wider Tamron primes were extra wide was to allow for correction of distortion and still provide the correct angle of view...after correction.
@@DustinAbbottTWI That make sense! thank you very much for your help it is helping me a lot to pick the best 24mm lens. Im going to buy the tamron 24mm 2.8 you deserve a pay raise ;) Cheers from Canada!
Elvin Nguyen yeah , Sony lens has a really bad focus distance ... sometimes , I am quite upset and have second thought of getting tamron instead of their native lenses .
Tbf with the silent focus, this lens is aimed at stills shooters not video and obviously you'd probably barely hear the noise if it's drowned out by ambient noise.
Thank you. I got a month ago a samyang 35 2.8 for around 280$ and i was wondering if the size increase with the tamron, only because of the close focusing, its worth a switch.
Are you sure the noise during focusing is the focusing motor and not the aperture? I've noticed on my 17-28 2.8 that the focusing motor is very silent but the aperture actuation is quite noisy. When focusing, the aperture opens, then it focuses and then the aperture closes again.
Don’t know why most of macro lenses are loud, slow and hunts in auto focusing. My Sony 90mm and 50mm macro are both loud, hunt and slow. However, most people shoot macro manually anyway, so how the focus ring works is more important. Never seen such wide macro lenses, very interesting. The widest macro I have is 50mm and I use it on APSC so it’s 75. Macro lens is usually very sharp and 1:2 ratio is fantastic. The small size should fit A7C body well also. These lenses are currently on sale, 35mm and 20mm are $50 off, and 24mm is $100 off. I would buy one for the macro feature and the low price. Oh, I would put a filter on it, the front barrel looks like a dirt trap.
Great video! I’ve been interested in this lens for a while but still unsure due to the focusing and the noise. I shoot mainly portraits of people as well as my puppy (on apsc Sony without IBIS.) What do you think? Is it worth it? I already have Sony 50 mm f/1.8 & Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 but I would like a nice affordable prime that’s wider than 50 but not as heavy as my Tamron. Let me know what you think.
I'm looking for a light weight macro lens. The recommended 90-105mm are too heavy for me. Could this one do the job or can you recommend something else. Thanks
@@DustinAbbottTWI Talking about image quality, there are different opinions. In general Samyang lenses are highly regarded for their IQ. What for the macro, almost any old manual focus $50 lens will do this job much better. It is not even true macro what this lens does. I do not see anything particularly attractive in this lens in comparison with, for example, Tamron zooms f2.8 from the same lineup
Hmmm, I'd like to see any old manual focus lens compete with the macro performance of this lens. As someone who has used a LOT of vintage lenses along with most new lenses, I think you might be surprised.

That's an amazing deal for it, for sure.

Your reviews never disappoint
Glad to hear it!
Great review again! I was wondering if the 35mm is wider than a real 35mm like the tamron 24mm 2.8 for Sony that is more like a 22mm lens? Many thanks

How is this lens focus speed today 4 years later on modern sony bodies and updated firmware?still pretty slow ?
I haven't used one since this review, but I doubt that things have changed much because the main issue was the focus motor itself.
Do you think it’s worth to trade 28mm f2 for this 35mm f2.8 ? Does the autofocus is as good as 28mm f2?
I haven't used the 28mm, so I don't actually know
Autofocus speed would be much faster on the 28mm f2 and quieter. You would just lose out on the close focus on the Tamron 35mm F2.8
Elvin Nguyen yeah , Sony lens has a really bad focus distance ... sometimes , I am quite upset and have second thought of getting tamron instead of their native lenses .

Sure, though the competition is producing smoother, quieter focus motors (as is Tamron with all their other lenses)

That's hard for me to answer for you. It's a definitely a bigger lens, but it does deliver very good close focus performance.

I've noticed on my 17-28 2.8 that the focusing motor is very silent but the aperture actuation is quite noisy. When focusing, the aperture opens, then it focuses and then the aperture closes again.
There would be no aperture changes taking place during my tests, so it is definitely not that. Those tests are taken with the aperture wide open.

I didn't find the 90mm loud or slow, so I'm not quite sure where you are getting that.

It's a pretty strong lens optically, and fairly cheap. You might find it useful.

If lightweight is a priority, this might be a good pick for you.
I have a question Dustin. What size is the filter thread on the Lenshood of the 35mm?
It is also 67mm
hi I wanted to know between 20mm, 24mm and 35mm which is the sharpest?
They are actually all very sharp lenses. I wouldn't base your decision on that. Choose the focal length that works best for your purposes.
thanks for your quick reply, i wanted to ask you why tamron brought out the 20mm last?
It needed more development time.
A few intriguing glimpses of a Sony α9 here - I wonder if we'll be seeing some sports and actions shots in future...
You'll see a fair bit of that on the upcoming Sony FE 200-600 OSS review.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Great - looking forward to that with interest :)
How’s the auto focus on video?
Only okay. The Sony is the better option.
why would they make a f2.8 when there's tamron 28-75mm f2.8 D:
I do address that in the second part
For people like me, who likes the 17-28 and an 85mm, it bridges the gap perfectly without needing to buy the 28-75 👍🏼
This lens is a way too bulky for its noderate parameters. The Samyang is half the weight and half the size.
That's true, though the Samyang is not in the same class optically and definitely doesn't have the macro capabilities.

oh, made in VIet Nam kìa
Tamron does have a factory in Vietnam.
