@@DustinAbbottTWI So just to get this straight : In term of sharpness that would be ; sony macro 90mm < Sigma 105mm DG DN < Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di III ? How the Irix 150mm would compare in there strictly in term of sharpness? Thank you!
For me the question is do I sell my old 90mil sony and get this? Will you do a direct comparison between them? I did not even know this lens was coming... I was hoping for a telephoto superzoom from tamron...
Nice review, Dustin, thanks. Over the years I've owned several Tamron 90mm macros (various camera mounts). All of them are very good and very sharp. Of the specific samples I've owned, I feel that the best over all one is the model F004. I'm using it adapted on my Sony cams and the auto focus isn't fast or great so I generally manual focus it. But it does render very good images. There are situations (outside flowers with some wind movement) where good auto focus is a must and my go to macro for the past couple of years has been the Sigma 105mm macro. I find the Sigma to be a great macro lens. I have a few really good manual focus macro lenses too, and they're wonderful in situations that favor their use. Yeah, I really enjoy macro photography. I'd really be interested in seeing a head to head comparison with this Tamron 90 and the Sigma 105, one day. Again, I enjoyed the video and appreciate your time and work. Thanks
I have the earlier F004 model for Canon EF and still love that lens! (though I really need to get around to having the firmware updated so I can use it with my R6m2 rather than just my old 350D). Here's to hoping Canon will let Tamron into the RF world with this someday.
After what felt like the ice-age for mirrorless macros (barring that really light weight L-mount only Panasonic), it's great to see another contender. That utility software is huge to separate it from the rest of the pack (seeing as how we're not getting things like IBIS, 2x Macro, etc..). I was wondering if you had any experience with the mobile app (Android only unfortunately), as there seems to be some features during the use of the lens. Everywhere I see this lens isn't coming until the end of the month. I really wanna give this thing a test drive.
I really like Tamron's signature design and rendering in their newer lenses. They have been integrating macro + improving MFD in even their zoom lenses. If I did not have so many macro lenses I would definitely procure it. In terms of macro AF the real test is always dragonflies etc in flight. I was amazed at being able to do this -handheld-with the new insect AF (sony a75) and the 70-200 f4 semi macro lens which has added lens stability. I wonder how the tamron would perform also in relationship to the much older sony 90mm which performs better with the newer bodies. The newer sensors get so much more information that even some lesser known softwares are able to get so much more detail and micro contrast. The base optics of tamron lenses is very high and now they are working on the quality of the rendering. This seems a very fine lens
I own the Nikkor Z 105 MC, and this lens somehow managed to perk my ears up, even though the Nikkor is excellent. Tamron's doing a lot right lately and perhaps this lens releasing on the same time as the Sony E version hints at what's to come.
Now that focus stacking has come to a lot of Sony bodies, I’d like to see how well the auto focus stacking works and if the snappy focus makes the experience better/faster?
Great review as usual. This is a really nice option for the money. It would be great to see a deep-dive comparison of the Nikon Z mount version of this lens with Nikon’s own MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S lens.
I have had the 272E on A200 since 2014, and i still use it on A7IV after going through it on A77II. Note: The macro 2024 having a custom button shines a new era of tamron lenses with such feature. What's next? Aperture rings?

Just as I have a Sony 90mm in the post, you release this video 🫠 but then, I've paid £530 for it brand new? Thanks for the video Dustin, brilliant as always.
@tiorimas Cotswold Cameras, a grey import but I've picked it up from the post office yesterday and it's perfect, well exceeded my expectations. The main aspect that put me off the Sony 90mm was a few reviewers stating the AF was slow, I find this acceptable especially when you use the focus limiter to stop it hunting too far. Might also note I've had an A7C, A7CR, 20-70mm and 20mm f1.8 from this company too and they've all been fine with no issues, apart from the A7CR which came with no option to change the language to English, but this was replaced with another at no cost. Delivery can take a couple of weeks. Hope this helps!
maybe because they are not even trying to do it - expensive process, a lot of work to call it "GM", if they fail, people won't buy it.. people expecatations will be VERY HIGH and demanding, so... yeah, thats why. Edit: I would expect GM lens for instance, to be x1.5 MACRO autofocus AT LEAST. If this would be 1:1 why would I buy it when the price would've been x3 than tamron at the same 1:1? You get it..
Unless youre a Z shooter, it doesn't make sense to buy this over the Sony which doesnt have issues with the Sony in-camera focus stacking feature (that you didnt mention so must have forgotten to test). The Sony also has a very quick to aquire AF then back to manual clutching mechanism, the Tamron doesn't. Thr Tamron is more expensive and obviously not OE so worse resale and possibly (more) compatibility issues than it already has.
Hmmm, not sure what market you're in, but the Tamron certainly isn't more expensive than the Sony in North America ($450 cheaper here in Canada, $400 cheaper in the USA.). The Tamron also has faster AF, though I do like the clutch mechanism for the Sony when it comes to MF.
@@DustinAbbottTWIin Australia the tamron is about $150 to $200 more than the Sony. Would you go the Sony if there wasn’t a price advantage with the Tamron?
@@DustinAbbottTWI That's cool. The two things I read in terms of comments to the new RF 28-70 was "it's a bit expensive" (but as many comparisons to old Canon zooms and currency values today etc) and "good on them, looks really nice!", rather than "I wish Tamron and Sigma were alternatives". The latest Nikkey stats on "digital camera market share" shows Canon at 46.5% of the market, by far the largest share, the number was exactly the same two years ago. Whatever they are doing seems to be working (or rather, either their mirrorless market is smaller than their dslr market still or there weren't significantly many who jumped ship due to Canon's restrictive rf policies)

I do not like Macro Lenses with autofocus. The new Tamron may be as sharp or maybe sharper then Sony 90mm Macro lens, but not as sharp as Sigma 105mm Macro lens. IMO the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 and the Venus Optics Laowa 90mm 2.8 Macro Lens are better options for Macro Photography than any autofocus Lens.
In real world the sony is sharper than the laowa at 1x, and if this tamron is sharper than the sony its a great result. Also you cant do autostacking with laowa in studio conditions, stabiliser helps in handheld situations. Add a raynox to the sony and you get the same 2x, while laowa becomes a true pain to use with more magnification. If you had any real experience in macro photography you would like autofocus lenses just as much as manual ones.

A comparison between this one and the Sony would be cool.
Especially image quality on Full Frame and APS-C and AF (including the new insect AF)
That's true, but the problem is that I don't have the Sony and everyone is releasing new lenses right now, so I'm staying extremely busy!

I had one of their Sony A-mount macro lenses. It was one of my favorites.
I've owned one of their macros before as well and really liked it.
Hello! Are these findings also applicable to the Z Mount version? Considering this vs the Laowa with the 2X magnification.
I haven't tested the Z mount version, but, in my experience with Tamron lenses on Z mount thus far, I tend to prefer the Z-mount versions.

interesting lens, regardless of price would you recommend this or the sony 90mm? how important it it having image stabilization in the lens for macro?
The image stabilizer in the Sony 90mm only gives half a stop at Macro 1:1 !
