I’m sure many or most views will be from folks like me who have owned the Sony 90mm macro forever. Good to know it still holds up so well! A popular use of it is for occasionally “scanning” film negatives or transparencies, where the focus across a flat plain is all that matters. It looks from your test chart that both lenses do just fine, with the new one maybe even offering just a touch more in the very corner. Still, looks like a you can’t go wrong situation here.
OOOO. Im one of those may views, though my copy is fairly new to me. Just starting to have an interest in film and this is a wonderful point to make, regarding the two. Thanks!
I love the ability to make it linear. That would be an awesome function for any lens. Would be cool if that was adjustable from in the camera settings while the lens is mounted.
I don’t care too much about the focus clutch, but no AF/MF switch on a macro lens is a bit annoying. Can be mapped to the body of course, but I already like the way my buttons are mapped! Haha
Regarding 4:03, it's not about focus breathing, technically. When you talk about macro lenses, especially when you compare two lenses with same magnification ratios, having shorter minimum focus distance is actually a detriment.
Tamron makes some great lenses. When you start comparing ALL their specs head to head, not just sharpness, but Min. Focus, Aperture blade count, weather sealing, Vibration Control etc. they often win out. I have their 35mm 1.8 with VC and there are few other 35mm lenses that offer what it can do. It's minimum focus combined with VC is pretty rare. Not to mention it's still mechanical for focus and iris and with Nikon's long flange distance you can adapt it to basically anything. I think there's more value in a lens than can be used on many systems other than their own mirrorless ones.
I have F017, the F mount vesrion of 90/2.8 macro. It's been great on my D850. Unfortunately, I missed the window to update the lens internals to work with FTZ adapter. So on my Zf, I can only use manual focus to get reliable shots which is fine with me for products photos. Surprisingly, it works on my steelring adapter on GFX50S.
So, I wasn't able to identify the PCB, BUT I did select that shot as the one that I thought you would use for the outro-swirly-of-doom, so I'm gonna take that as a win.
How's the "3D pop"? Like you the 90mm Macro is one of my favourite, the fall off of the bokeh is amazing, but one of the things I tell people is it's also just a great lens full stop, ignoring the macro (which it's great at), I use this in place of my Sony 85mm f/1.8 most the time as the images just have a certain render to them none of my other lenses can achieve (even the 70-200mm f/2.8 gm mk2 at the same focal length) - it is such a unique look to it, that if you can get it on the Tamron, for that price, go for it.
Just bought the Sony for just under 600 euro on Amazon DE, been waiting for a good discount and I love shooting macro! this is going to be fun, and great review as always btw!
I'm wondering the same thing and its strange everyone is comparing the new Tamron with Sony and staying away from Sigma. Despite their different focal length, they retail for the same price basically.
Certainly AFs a lot faster. Which may not matter so much, depending on your subject matter. 12 blades though, for rounder highlights and better sunstars stopped down. I do wonder about the difference in feel of the mf ring and its response.
The Sony 90mm is such an underrated lens and idk why because it is probably my favorite after my 50mm. I fell in love with the 90 a few years back when I rented it for a wedding (for video) and man it was perfection! (that day I also rented the ziess 50mm 1.4 and lens was absolute garbage). I use the 90mm all the time for studio portraiture work and of course for all my product shoots. Kind of sucks using it for video on the A7IV due to the crop converting it to a super telephoto but the OSS is a life saver for sure. Glad to know there is a cheaper but just as good or even slightly better alternative I can recommend to people enow though. Thanks for the great review as usual
Thanks for such an excellent review. The Tamron did have years to refine the optics and mechanics over ht e Sony and that shows. And for $400 less the lack of in-lens IS wouldn't seem to matter much or for some people at all for critical macro work.
I have had the Sony for years and only bring it out occasionally - wouldnt bother upgrading (if it is even an upgrade) but good to see Tamron putting out some great lenses
The thorough weather sealed construction on the Tamron is another plus. We've done terrible things to our Tamron glass in the worst of inclement weather and they keep coming back.
I opted for the sigma over the Sony because I found my copy to be a bit sharper than my Sony copy. I liked how my negative scans came out on the sigma slightly more and the savings helped. Glad to see tamron brought a new entrant to the market because the more competition the better it is on all our wallets
I continue to regret my choice to go from Canon EF to Canon RF mount instead of just moving over to Sony like I should have. Would be nice to have access to some of this cool Sigma and Tamron glass.
You know, until this video I thought bees and hornets were pretty different looking but now you have me second guessing myself :) And yes Flies look gnarly as hell.
Actually, if you turn off auto-focus from the camera (like with the Tamron), and not use the clutch, then focus will remain where it was. So with the Sony you can choose between both methods of manual focus, as choosing manual focus from camera works like other lenses, while it of course has the innovative clutch in addition.
@@Soundwave857 Yes, it works the same as other lenses without clutch when put in manual mode this way (but the distance scale on the lens will not be right, or move when done this way).

Also seem to have a noticably limited sharp zone in the centre half of the frame. Really disappointing for a premium lens. Used on an A7r4 and 5 same struggles. I use the Sony 90mm with my A9iii. Works fine. You just can’t shoot faster than 15 fps. So, no advantage over the Tamron. With newer, faster focusing Sony lenses, the A9iii will shoot up to 120 fps.
