you know people who survived all odds no matter how much crazy it can get? Gordon was one of those and the Gman realized that Gman's motives isn't to stop the Xen invasion his motives were to just start it to make the combine notice earth but during his time in black mesa he noticed a couple of people who remind him of him self survivalists who defeat all odds so he recruited them and during Half Life 2 Gman released Gordon to rain havoc on the combine forces of earth Gman is an interdimensional being he just choose the timeline where to release Gordon where he will destroy the combine forces and always win of course in Episode 1 when he tried to retrieve Gordon the Vortigaunts didn't allow that so on Episode 1 Gordon was the same as black mesa he was on his own until the Vortigaunts were busy healing Alyx in Episode 2 he got to Gordon and give him a new job to deliver Alyx to white forest safely where he in the end decided to fire Gordon and employ Alyx instead of him by tricking her younger self into saving her father from death
