He mawed down the raiders as I hoped, but he turned on me as well. Being only level 3 or 4, I had to run around the mart like sheep before the bucher! Ahh, fun times...

I love Protectrons, they’re adorable. One of my favourite fallout memories was from Fallout 3, while on my first expedition into the DC Ruins to find Three Dog and GNR I activated a Subway attendant Protectron in one metro station, and his paintwork was super cute, plus he helped me beat some radroaches and stuff in the station entrance. I was low-level at the time and I could’ve managed without him, but I loved his cute design and voice anyway. Then I stopped playing Fallout 3 for ages, like a year nearly, and one day I resumed my save and kept playing. I did the Temple of the Union quest Head of State and I was having to escort the slaves on foot to keep them safe, as if I just fast traveled to the quest marker they never arrived, and it was a bit boring since they were super slow and went on this ridiculous route that went halfway around the wasteland before finally reaching DC through the least efficient route possible, but then we traveled through several metro tunnels, and when we reached the top of one MY PROTECTRON BUDDY FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME WAS THERE, and that was so cool to see he was still wandering around in the station. Typically in Fallout 3 you never revisit most locations, but this quest led me back to this metro station and I got to see something I never thought I’d see again, and that was special enough to become one of my favourite memories from playing the Fallout games.
I think that's the problem with Fallout 4 protectrons. Unlike in Fallout 3, the FO4 protectrons deactivate as soon as you leave the interior, and you have to reactivate them every time you re-enter the building. In Fallout 3, once you've activated it, it patrols the area permanently until destroyed.
It may be ineffective, but in the automatron DLC I always build an army of protectrons with different names and weapons and send them to settlements. I let the powerful protectrons accompany me on my journey. I only do this because THEY'RE SO CUTE!
I made protectrons for settlement scav stations and named them minutemen scrap bots. Minutemen botanist bot for farming food (mr. Handy’s). Minutemen provisioner bot to link settlements (securitron). Vendors are robobrains called Minutemen vendor bot. Lastly, I use assaultrons for defense named Minutemen defense bot.
If the enemy has turrets, and the turrets attack you, so will the Protectron. Which is why I clear any errant turrets from the immediate area, before I turn on the robot. A perfect example of this is Corvega.
Also, the Utility Protectron comes in versions armed with Railway Rifles for hands, or a combo of normal hand/pincer, and Railway Rifle. There's also a model of Police Protectron that uses only melee attacks against enemies, instead of shooting at them. It's even armed with a billy club.
i remember when i did the VIP option once in the gunner HQ with Macready (if i remember right) and he lasted all throughout the area only to die to the last enemy heck i cared about him i nicknamed him Buddy
I did that in Fort Hagen, when I was going to enter into the last corridor, where you try to find the entrance to Kellogg's room, I shut him down before proceeding. I literally fast travelled with the bot off, but unfortunately a Supermutant killed him with a rocket launcher even though I didn't turn him on. Well, I nuked that area about 4 times with a big boy, then I found another protectron and used it until I attacked the Prydwen and they retialated against the Castle. Yes, it survived the synth attack

There are some things you didn't mention: --Turrets count as allies to Protectrons, so if you encounter a hostile turret, any Protectrons in the area will also become hostile. The stealth trick will not work if the Protectron is supposed to be hostile, like the Rust Devils or some Nuka World Protectrons.
