Street skateboarders looking to make it to the next Olympic Games are hitting up WST Lausanne Street 2023 from 9-16 September for the next stop on the qualification road to Paris 2024.
The event, streaming live on RUclips, Olympics.com and the official Olympics app, will see Olympic stars including Horigome Yuto, Rayssa Leal and Nyjah Huston, meet in the Beaulieu District to battle it out for the number one prize. And with the Games approaching, the competition for ranking points - also on offer based on finishing positions - is heating up.
Just like with the previous skateboarding Olympic qualifying events, the competition will begin with a men’s and women’s open qualifier with the top 27 advancing to the quarter-finals. There, the top five skaters, who are pre-seeded owing to their Olympic World Skate Ranking, will join the contest.
The field will then be cut down in a semi-final leaving just eight skaters for the men’s and women’s finals on Saturday 16 September.
The open qualifiers and quarter-finals will use the best score of two 45-second runs while the semi-final and final will use the Olympic street format - 2/5/3.

I just did not expect this level of competition on a 9 stair hand rail. Back in the 80s and 90s, we might see a 9 stair hand rail and think, 'wow, THAT'S a 9 stair hand rail.' But now, the progression of skateboarding has led us to not 5, six, seven, or eight, but NINE stairs on this hand rail. And the angle of it? Steep. Big. Just like a 9 stair hand rail i would see back when i was riding a 5 inch curb to work every day.

The level... Just the freaking level ALL of them are on. Men, Women.. 30 or 13 (just that is in it self insane).
Another thing - that isn't even comparable to 20 years ago, is how Pro also everything around the skating is now. Meaning the schedules for workouts, restitution and nutrition (just that even being a thing today). Today skatebaorders are just like any top athlete. No matter the sport.

I could go on about alot of things but the biggest stand out was in the semi's. Gustavo did a gap to FS Noseblunt nollie heel out, and he scored (90.98) which was lower than Jinwoo's gap to FS blunt kickflip out (92.17) on the exact same obsticle.

its crazy to see how different the skater's dress while skating...you got Nyjah in short shorts and a semi baggy shirt....Yuto in all around semi baggy clothes...the other japanese skates in super baggy clothes, and the rest of the skaters in pretty normal clothes.

Im a huge fan of Nyjah Huston and havnt finished this contest yet. Im halfway through 2nd runs and i agree thayt the scoring is a bit off. I coildnt make sense of it. And definitely didnt unferstand why Nys first run was an 86 and first place. Not hating but the scoring was strange on this one. Lets see how the comp plays out.

Surely, but quickly, japan riders will dominate the scene in freestyle and street. I wonder about vert. Do they have great skaters in vert too?
I'm not sure why there's a surge of great japan riders but i'm all for it ^^
Anyone has an idea why it's becoming so popular in Japan? I'm not certain it was always the case.

What’s up with the two Japanese skaters wearing Nike sb shirts? Don’t they skate for DC ?

@liamjduxj1287 I was looking for this comment…I was thinking the same thing, but I guess brand misappropriation doesn’t matter in this age of skating if they’re doing it openly in contest 🤷🏾‍♂️
