    Very interesting this tent system !!! I ordered an identical tent in Sweden at the beginning of May, today it looks like it will be delivered. I will adapt it for the car roof , telescopic ladder and an extra mattress I already have in my possession! I'm excited to get it up and running!

    These tents are great. Never thought of doing it perpendicular to the truck bed. And the cot is so much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

  • @OutlierConcepts
    @OutlierConcepts 10 месяцев назад +4

    Just something to keep in mind, the tent cot is already pretty close to the walls of the bed so as the material stretches with age/use or with a second occupant you might start feeling the walls behind your back/legs. If you double up the wood you should get some more clearance. I ran into a similar problem on my Tacoma but ended up running it long ways in the bed (there's a video on my channel if you want to take a look). Now that I installed Decked drawers I'm looking to go back to something like this and I like the idea. We aren't allowed to ground camp on the beaches here in NY so finding a budget friendly bed mounted camping setup is great.

      Camping rules are the only reason to bother with this rather than setting up a traditional tent.

    I like the set up.. definitely like being higher off the ground. I did a similar set up , I built a platform inside the bed for the full 6ft of the bed with the tailgate down using plywood. Then bought a cheap 2 person tent that had the opening come out on the end of the bed.. benefit also is storage underneath the plywood. Thanks for sharing your version!

    Wow….You have certainly inspired me to do this same set up now…I’ve been researching into buying a new truck and tent setup. I’m interested in the Ford maverick and I like how you utilized the truck bed for this setup plus it’s inexpensive regarding the tent. I’m not looking to pay for an expensive tent. Thank you for posting this video…..Very Smart and I wouldn’t have thought of this on my own…..

    I looked at one of those "2-person" cot tents from Kamp Rite, but I'm even bigger than you (6'3/250#), so it wasn't gonna work for just me alone. No way could I put a 2nd person in there. Plus, I heard the ridge pole that goes underneath you and down the center is very uncomfortable unless you have an extra thick mattress, but again, I would be even more crammed. Instead, I found a double sized folding military cot setup that has a tent placed over the top of it and also included a 6in air mattress. Its just shy of queen sized, but fits me perfectly and has room for a 2nd person. It's also tall enough that I can sit upright to get dressed and still not hit my head on the roof. It won't fit on the bed rails of my F150 like the Kamp Rite does, but it's about 2ft off the ground and would fit just perfectly on my 7.5x12ft flatbed trailer once the bikes are unloaded. Best part about it is that it all folds down and away into a duffle bag and doesn't take up most of the bed space like your Kamp Rite. I'm building out my hardtop Samurai as an overlanding rig, so I definitely needed something that would collapse down a little bit smaller. With my bluetti, I can also bring along my heated mattress cover on those cooler Fall solo trips.

    I own about 5 tent cots. bought another 2 person tent cot this week. I guess I don't really understand the point of Rooftop Tents and Truckbed tents. It just seems harder to get up and pee in the middle of the night and more difficult to set up. I guess if you are concerned about putting the tent cot directly on the dirt, it might just be easier to put a small tarp under it. I have storage organizers that hang on the sides of my tent cots.

    • @islandbyfilm

      If I sleep in the bed, my cooler is on the ground? How is that bear proof? At least for me it's the opposite. The Maverick holds everything but myself. @@islandbyfilm

    • @BearClawAK47
      @BearClawAK47 5 месяцев назад +1

      I don't believe your cooler is going to be any safer in the truck bed. There are a few videos on youtube of bears completely destroying vehicles to get at food. If your in bear country you are better off hanging your food in a tree.

    • @islandbyfilm
      @islandbyfilm  7 месяцев назад +3

      I was thinking of Putting the cooler in my back seat and by doing that there is actually quite a bit of space left in the box if you used low profile bins.

    • @davidhjortnaes2000
      @davidhjortnaes2000 6 месяцев назад +1

      Put it under the 2x4's. The tent does not take a lot of space.

    • @anitatombreach7801
      @anitatombreach7801 6 месяцев назад

      Cooler in the cab on the backseat is the only work-around, along with a cab roof rack and cargo box. Plus sliding bins under the 2x4 as mentioned. Juice isn't worth the squeeze IMO. Just camp like we've done forever, in a tent. You're really not driving all day like overlanding. Probably make better sense out west but still not ideal.

      I think we've confused the point of Overlanding. Probably in the Maverick is more of a destination trip, rather than the journey in a 4x4. Typically, no need to sleep in Maverick.

    I wish they made a two seater version with a deeper bed.
    How wide is the tent? Or its longest dimension....
    Dude with the 4k package you could convert a cargo trailer into a sick travel trailer too. Its neat that little 4 cycnldier engine they have seems to have more pickup than those Civic Vtechs in their respective cars, and towing 4k lbs? Sweet.

    With the way you have done this you could even have one of those drawer systems on sliders right below the cot tent.
    There is a drawer system called "decked" which can take a lot of weight on top of it and it even has "D" rings on top so you could haul a couple of dirt bikes on the bed of the truck and once you arrive to your destination put them down and set up camp just like you have done here.
    Not a bad set up for a truck that gives you more than 35mpg!
    Is there a 4x4 version for the hybrid maverick or for it to be 4x4 you'd have to give up the hybrid?

    I don't understand. The Tent Cot has legs so you are not sleeping on the ground anyway. I don't see the benefit of putting it on the truck.

    • @anitatombreach7801
      @anitatombreach7801 6 месяцев назад +1

      There isn't much of a benefit, but it follows a trend of confusion. Somehow tent camping is under attack by the RV industry. That's the root of it. Everyone must RV or Overland, that's their goal. One person mentioned beach rules don't allow ground tents, that the only reason to do this.

      @islandbyfilm  Месяц назад

      @@hunterhogan9326 hi there. It is the double and it just fits. The outside legs stay folded in and just rest on the box rails. In terms of can you feel the outside of the bed, do you mean the bed rails on the truck?

  • @anitatombreach7801
    @anitatombreach7801 6 месяцев назад

    Overlanding is so overrated. I've camped about 6 times with my white hybrid Maverick, with a topper. Too much gear to sleep in the bed unless you pack like you are backpacking. The question is, where does the gear go if you're using the bed to sleep? Cooler, food, kitchen box, camping accessories, etc.. For me, I set up the my nice big tent on the ground and all the gear including the cooler stays closed in the bed topper. I can't imagine leaving my cooler outside and sleeping in the topper, but it's possible.
