I’m in the medical field and when there’s bad storms we sometimes lockdown in the hospital. There isn’t always enough rooms or beds for all the staff so this might be a great solution to camp out. Thanks!
My week: Challenges - budget issues at work, another project dumped on my plate, performance review time for my staff, overly long Zoom meetings that could have been emails instead. Solutions - bingeing on Steve’s stealth and his regular camping videos, watching Boondocking for the first time, Step 2 after work, and reading the comments about Steve’s videos from the collective that loves him - you guys are hysterical! Hunker down, folks. Everything’s going to be alllll riggghhhttt!
I've had one of these for 12 years now. I have mobility issues that are made worse by sleeping curled up in a car. This tentbed makes it possible for me to do longer road trips down to the capitol city, or interstate to visit relatives, on a really low budget. I just pull up, pull off the road, set this up on the far side of the car (if it's wet I throw a tarp over the car and use bungy cords to attach it to trees or poles or whatever is handy to make a poor man's awning,) and sleep for hours, comfortable, dry, and off the bug's menu. Another big advantage is, when it's cold, I'm off the ground. When it's wet, all that gets wet are the legs. Yes it's heavy. Yes it takes up space. But I can get into and out of it without needing to crawl, I can set it up in thirty seconds and I've got over ten years of frequent use out of mine. Well worth it imo. edit oh yours has a fly? That's pretty cool. Mine doesn't but like I said I just throw up a tarp to make an awning off one side of the car and I'm laughing.
I love my Tent Cot! I've had it for probably 15 years. Definitely not something you'd hike with, but it is perfect when camping by your vehicle. Gets you off the ground so you can put it anywhere. And as you showed, setting up and taking down is so fast
I'm disabled too. My hiking and camping days are very gone now too. I like watching you do what you do, keep at it and enjoy the black and tans. My favorite style of beer.
Was not expecting that when you flipped it upright. That needs to go inside the tent, inside the other tent, inside your fishing hut, inside your tree house!
@@drahcirelas7567 Some kid on youtube hung up a pile of sleeping bags to try and insulate his inner tent, no idea how effective it was but it looked like he was having fun.
I use a wheelchair and have wanted to try camping on my own. Wasn't sure how I could set up a whole tent by myself. This thing looks more doable. Maybe lower than I'd like but, doable, maybe. :D
Give it a try. If not you might have regrets but for the sake of safety invite someone along just tell them you're trying it to see if you can. If things get bad you'll have help. Just tell them you need to try.
I just found this channel and came straight to the comments the first time he cracked me up. Little did I know the commenters would be just as funny. Y’all crack me up!
I’ve got one, and the appeal for me is the comfort and utility. Now, the size and weight for what you get are certainly detriments, but for the quality of shelter I do think it’s worth the negatives. It’s also one of the most comfortable sleeps I’ve had outdoors that I can remember.
I mean this is only something you would use with some form of automobile so it literally doesn't matter since you don't actually have to carry it. I mean you could technically even go bicycle touring with it if you were crazy enough but I don't like using trailers.
I have one, and I'm too tall for it. I also tend to wake up with water in my blankets whenever I use it in the rain. I mainly just use it for the daughters now, they both fit in it nicely and I just throw a tarp over top of it. It's really nice for Nascar races and when they wanna "rough it" outside of the camper :P
This looks perfect for one or two kids to have an overnight backyard camp with. Definitely kid-sized and quick and easy for Dad or Mom to set up and take down.
I love this! Small and cozy :) The great thing about this in comparison to a tent is that it's off the ground. I went tent camping and was surprised by a rainstorm. The water found its way in and got all of the bedding wet. After a day hike waiting for everything to dry (on the hood of the truck), it rained again immediately after setting up the mattresses/bedding. With this tent cot I could have just zipped up and snuggled in with a good book (or RUclips lol).
I plan using mine in conjunction with my canoe. No worries about weight or running out of room in my 15 foot boat, and this will get me off the ground in the wetlands, away from moisture, mud and snakes. Bonus is that (unlike a hammock) I get to lay flat in this tent cot, and even roll over or spread out. No worries about having to find suitable trees for a hammock either. I can stay on the sandbar or beach, right next to the boat.
You need to water proof your tent or make a suitable rainfly from a tarp. Depending upon the source of the water, you might consider a different base to your tent. I did that with a cheap tent from Walmart, cut off the existing bottom and sewed on a heavy duty tarp with triple backed seams to form a high wall base of 12 inches. It cut down on floor space and added a bit to height, so I bought poles to extend the originals. It’s good for car camping, not backpacking unless it’s like a few miles to the lake.
Back when I could still drink alcohol, I tended to drink the things with the most interesting label design. It’s a particularly fun strategy with wine.
'There's an art to starting a fire if you want to be an artist about it, that's for sure. I just want the fire. There's an art to starting certain cars I've owned in my life.' - Steve Wallis, legend!
I had a '77 Ford XC V8 wagon. Dual fuel. LPG/petrol. My starting routine started the day before. It wouldn't start on gas, so every day coming home I had to remember to switch it to petrol. Anyone that's ever driven an old dual fuel car with a mechanical fuel pump knows you have to have some momentum once you switch the gas off to suck the juice into the engine and fire up again. Then, it had some kind of electrical short that would drain the battery overnight, so I installed a battery isolator. Once I was parked I'd pop the bonnet and isolate the battery. In the morning, pop the bonnet, connect the battery (actually TWO deep cycle marine batteries, because that bugger could take 5 minutes of cranking to light on fire). Put the choke _just so_, two pumps on the throttle, turn the key and pray. If that didn't work, I had a spray can of carby starter, and a remote starter switch. So, pop the bonnet, hook the starter button to the starter motor, take the lid off the air filter, and spray starter fluid straight down its throat while cranking it. That usually worked. But if it didn't, and the battery went flat from trying, I'd have to hook up a battery charger and wait a few hours before trying again. But when she fired-up, she didn't skip a beat. She just wasn't a morning person. :) Tell me cars don't have personalities. :)
Always wondered if those cot tents were warm enough and dry. They looked like they would be. I seen them on display at CABELA'S here in the USA 🇺🇸. Minimalist camping but nice quality, right up my alley! I would, however, take a separate screen room for hanging out in until bedtime. Doing that would make it pretty perfect for a campground setup. So I really enjoyed this video a lot. Thanks for doing it.
As someone who is from WI, when you had an Old Milwaukee in hand and prefaced that by saying I'm not a beer connoisseur I had to chuckle and agree with you.
Hi Steve, been watching a while now and really enjoy your videos. Best part for me personally is how real you are and how down to earth you keep things. Always have a step 2 ready when I sit down to watch and never crack it open without you doing it first.
I see a video from Steve and I stop what I'm doing, cancel all prior engagements and watch his video while having a step-2 haha. Fan here from the UK!!
I wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your video, I discovered your channel over the last couple weeks when I was hospitalized for COVID-19. I was alone in the hospital since no one was allowed to visit, and your videos have been such a distraction and helped me through a very scary lonely time in my life thank you for your videos/channel. I am getting healthy again and you've inspired me to get into camping again.
Steak, tomatoes, onions, cooked as a stew, then an apple for dessert. I managed to lose 200 pounds eating like that. Well, I usually ate chicken, but whenever my weight loss would plateau, I'd do a steak day (grilled steak with one sauteed tomato for dinner, and lots of water, no other food for the day). Jump-starts your metabolism. Just be careful not to use too many seasonings. Limit it to two, like salt and pepper, or lemon pepper and fennel seeds, or basil and garlic. I don't know why, but using many seasonings throws off the weight loss. Lost those 200 pounds in 2 years. Lots of walking and drinking about half a gallon of water a day.
We use these inside our winter big game hunting tent, so each person kinda has "their own space" since there is 6 of us in the same tent for 3 weeks, and you can stay a bit warmer inside the cot inside the heated tent on them super chilly nights!
The idea of using an old school bus for camping is really cool, can't wait to see it and how you outfit it for camping. And as usual this camp was nice and relaxing, very enjoyable!
I mean, a small shelter tent(or big vestibule if tent size allows) and a outdoor dog mat would probably be smaller/easier/cheaper. But this is just a-tier dog comfort coolness.
I have one of those tents. I used it one year for GOBA (the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure) and it was awesome for sleeping - super easy to set up and it was comfortable. I was able to store my bags under the tent. It also helped to have a "welcome mat" so I could wipe my feet before getting in the tent. We had a car with us that year, so it was easy to lug around.
Same. I've watched so much CheapRVLiving and Navigation Nowhere and Ambition stikes camper builds (among many, many others whose channel name I cant remember right now), that I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Steve might be throwing his hat into that same ring. I have the same one , and love it. I leave it in the woods , and Ive got a dry place any time I want to get away. I'm 6'4" 210lbs and there's plenty of room inside, not enough to sit up in but laying flat is good. I sprayed mine with a water proofer when it was new and it's never let a drop in.

Hi Steve! Love your channel! A little cheat to start a fire with a flint rod: get some lint from your dryer and save it in a zip lock bag. When lighting a fire, put that in between some dry leaves, dry grass or pine needles and direct your spark to it. It worked great since my very first attempt
Short bus camper conversion!!!! WOOO!!!! I'm in! I'm saying it right now: if Steve documents his bus build as well as he's documented everything else he's done, this is going to be a multi-million subscriber channel by the time he's camped in in twice!
My dad used one of those when he would take motorcycle trips. It fit in his pull behind trailer with ease and he could be set up in just minutes. He stayed in it for over two weeks on his first trip to Sturgis SD.
My wife and I did a 700 mile trek in our side by side around the Frank Church wilderness. We both have tent cots and for 70 year old campers it's the best thing since Ramen noodles! Great vid!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was homeless for a bit. Fortunately, I was able to have a membership with Thousand Trails so I could stay one week in a tent and then need to be out for one week, I could afford to stay at a county campground during that time. Being different abled, it is hard to set up a tent and even harder to get up and down from the ground. This tent would have been perfect for me then.
I go fishing with a buddy, and we each have a tent cot. Great for a quick set up and decent nights sleep for a couple of older guys. Mine has more headspace and an air mattress.
Hey Steve try the "Kamprite" brand compact tent cot it's got more head room to sit up in and is much lighter to carry and there is more required to set up because with the compact tent cot by Kamprite, the camper can set up with just the bivy with out the cot or whatever uses you like. It has side pockets and a pouch under side to srow away shoes, but not sun roof or cup holders tho... I enjoy mine
I LIKE the concept of this shelter system. Even the tarp is heavy-duty. Bivvy bags are about the same size but they don't get you off the ground. Small volumes of space are easier to heat with body energy. But it is cramped!
I am disabled. My backpacking days long gone. This is the first hint that I could camp again. Sure, not ideal for those with working limbs, but looks ideal for me. I have been unable to put up a regular tent. This looks doable. From where I sit [pun intended] it is great. ~Marie

Hunker down, folks. Everything’s going to be alllll riggghhhttt!
Another Thursday, another vicarious camping trip with the Canadian Bob Ross of camping.
Mine doesn't but like I said I just throw up a tarp to make an awning off one side of the car and I'm laughing.
i wonder if you were the inspiration for him using this when he went to an abandonded oil well
Steve buying the schoolbus is basically working his way back to the boondocking days

I love my Tent Cot! I've had it for probably 15 years. Definitely not something you'd hike with, but it is perfect when camping by your vehicle. Gets you off the ground so you can put it anywhere. And as you showed, setting up and taking down is so fast

@@ronaldturner7737 nothing else for it haha
I’ve got one, and the appeal for me is the comfort and utility. Now, the size and weight for what you get are certainly detriments, but for the quality of shelter I do think it’s worth the negatives. It’s also one of the most comfortable sleeps I’ve had outdoors that I can remember.
I want one to place inside of my Clam Escape...for the dogs!
Ya I think that tent is cool 👍😎
Same, I've got the two person version and it sleeps me, my fiance, and my dog very comfortably.
Definitely kid-sized and quick and easy for Dad or Mom to set up and take down.
... but it's cramped. 😂😂
With this tent cot I could have just zipped up and snuggled in with a good book (or RUclips lol).
it's heavier then a tent and cot would weigh though so it's a pain to haul around from the sounds of it
I plan using mine in conjunction with my canoe.
"I'm not a beer connoisseur so I just started buying the things with the most ridiculous bottles." LOL same here.

Yes! Lmao for truth
That's the case with any vehicle with an engine. Cessnas, boats, you name it
I had a '77 Ford XC V8 wagon. Dual fuel.
Tell me cars don't have personalities. :)
If I were in a Red Cross shelter in an arena setup I’d want one of those cots to keep the light out of my eyes and give me some privacy.
Good thinking!
Absolutely agree
Or a homeless shelter. Cabela's cots are well built. Slept on one in Allentown Pa.
Exactly!
I know fishing guides and fishermen who swear by these for camping on the beach. Quick setup, gets you off the sand, don’t need stakes.
One of the things I like about Steve's videos is that nothing seems planned he just goes with the moment and what ever comes next

The idea of using an old school bus for camping is really cool, can't wait to see it and how you outfit it for camping. And as usual this camp was nice and relaxing, very enjoyable!
I think this could be a great dog house for your canine friends when you're camping! Would definitely help on those rainy days.
My dog would love this. No need to touch cold ground.
