  • After watching tons of RTT videos, I decided that I didn't want to spent that much money on something that I wouldn't be using more than a handful of times per year. Saw someone else do this and it works. Great setup for you truck. I chose this because my primary use is overnight accommodations when bass fishing more than an hour from my house.

    This is probably what I’m going to go with. I like to go a couple hours away to the lake and go crappie fishing and this will work great for the boat ramp parking lot. I’m tired of sleeping in the front seat! 😂 Come in around 12-1 in the morning, this will be an easy setup and comfortable for me and my son. Thanks for sharing.

      Exactly. Since I created this original video I figured out that I can lay it flat on the 2x6's and have my tonneau cover on. When I arrive, I just pop off the cover and set up, a lot faster. Also, the 3" memory foam mattress topper I have in there can stay folded inside if it's a multi-day trip and still can get the Tonneau cover back on

    Brilliant! I never would have thought to raise it some and turn it 90 degrees. Fits like a glove. Wish the tent opening was tall enough to allow you to sit fully upright on the cot with your legs on the pickup bed. It looks like you have to haunch over to get in and out. Pick up one of those highly reflective tarps to help keep the heat of the sun off the tent during the summer. Ive used that over my rightline gear truck tent and it works great, make sure you get one big enough.

    • @ericrupert4088
      @ericrupert4088  3 года назад +1

      Good suggestion, I'm pretty much a fair weather camper which means generally spring and fall.
      You can sit on the edge which is a perfect height from the truck bed. You can actually sit up because the tent angles back. I sit there to put my shoes on in the AM.

    • @ericrupert4088

      Sorry, I didn’t realize there were comments/questions. The cot support runs head/toe down the middle. Still trying to figure out the right mattress support. I had a 6” that was super comfy but took away length by raising you up in the tent. Have a 2” now that is slightly wider than a twin but not a full and it’s a bit thin. I think ideal is to get a twin that is 3” or 4” that doesn’t run over top the center bar.

  • @LampWaters

    Nice throw a converter in by the back and have access to some power. Like that it gers it just a bit higher than it would be on ground. Throw a tarp over cab and tent and past the tailgate and it's perfect.

      Now that I’ve done it a few times, it’s pretty easy. It will lay across the 2x4 and under my tonneau cover. When I get there, I just pop the legs up and flip each side out and strap them down to the wheel arches. I have the whole thing set up in just about 10min.

    Awesome setup. I had the same idea as I don't want a heavy roof tent - will use it on my FJ40. I have the green version - how is your newer tent different from the older Kamp-Rite Oversize tent cot?

    • @ericrupert4088
      @ericrupert4088  3 года назад +2

      Not sure what the older ones were like. I should do an updated video on another trip as I've refined the process over the course of a couple of trips. I've found that I can have the 2x6s in my bed and the cot on top closed up and still close my tonneau cover. When I get to the spot, I pull my tonneau cover off, extend the legs on the tent and flop it open. This takes about 2 min. then I can strap to the wheel arch and put in the poles and it's set. The only thing that's been bothering me is that the bar going down the middle tends to roll you to the side. Since I'm solo, I'd love to lay in it diagonally but that just doesn't work with a 2" topper in there. I had a 4" which was awesome but took up too much vertical space and was a PITA to manage. For the 2", I roll it and stuff it in one of those pop up style expandable laundry/trash cans and throw that in the back seat when the tip is done.

I have been thinking about a panel with legs that would fold out and double the truck bed surface area. As a platform. Hinged on the rail under the diamond back.

      Im 5'7" and fit with room to spare, at 6'4" you should be able to fit. My double tent measuring in the center, at the bottom of the mosquito netting, it is 7' long

    • @ericrupert4088
      @ericrupert4088  3 года назад +1

      Well, you'll "fit" but I wouldn't say that it would be comfortable. I had a 5" mattress that went in there and was mad comfy but because the higher you go the shorter it gets, I didn't feel like I fit well. Plus, it weighed a ton and was too bulky to haul around so I replaced it with a 2" twin size since it's just me and the dog in there. It's a bit thin so I'm thinking 3" might do the trick. With the 2", you definitely notice the bar in the middle. With the double bed sized 5", could lay diagonal easily without feeling the bar

      The advantage of being in the truck bed is that it can lay flat under the Tonneau cover when traveling and when set up, the edge of the tent is about chair height, easy to sit on the edge to put shoes on / off. Also, makes it easier for getting in an out. Not for everyone but since I was using it w my boat in tow, it was the fastest setup after a ping day of fishing
