Just saw this. I took lessons at age 50 for a few years. Still do 6 rounds a few times a week on the bag. This is a very good video. I do all of this and also do some kicks (front, side, roundhouse). All to keep my cardio, coordination, strength and flexibility. I’m now 68. Can’t compete with the 20-30 year olds. But feel pretty good if I was facing a non-boxer 40+.
hell yeah I used to do cross country and it was a dude in his mid late seventies that was in way better shape than I was when it came to marathons. you stay in shape and if they ain't trained they ain't winning
I train the Kickboxing Underground method. Everything you're saying is right on point with how we think about heavy bag training. You are an awesome teacher, man. Much respect!
Bro your form and technique have developed so much since i started watching your videos over 5 years ago. Wow. Ive gained so much knowledge from you as a martial artist. Im very thankful Shane.
It’s good to hit the bag without gloves every once in a while. Good for developing strong wrist and knuckles. Watch Shane’s videos on knuckle conditioning
He's a really good instructor on this stuff, help straighten out a few that are well beyond this type of video typically (not me among them, boxing is new to me and only did limited heavy bag before years break..). I'd consider myself a complete novice to heavy bag work, but do like to incorporate guard and 'my stance' I never thought to use footwork and never really learned it great to begin with. That was particularly helpful in this video. Well explained and quickly, but thoroughly exampled. I finally assembled a surprisingly nice heavy bag that I've had since Springtime in a box as a nice gift. My 5 year old asked me last weekend once and then got distracted, but this weekend he asked me if we could assemble it and that really helped motivate me and feel great. He was patient and wanted to help all he could. I got him a pair of more padded, smaller gloves (but the heavy bag is too...heavy for now because) I'm trying to teach him proper form first-- AT LEAST to keep his dang fist right and not let his wrist go limp and fist bend upward or downard like his attempts so far on my full sized heavy bag. So I got him a cool kid sized speed bag(? unsure the name). "I did" a couple martial arts for longer periods, Kempo, then Tae Kwon Do as a late teen. Loved nothing more than that Tae Kwon Do class, but it was due to an awesome mentor / man teaching our small group of rowdy teens. Also because he was as badass as a man who is as short as is his first name Leslie. Most badass man I may ever meet, near 20 years later, taught us very little Tae Kwon Do. His instructor was "our class" officially but Leslie was our's by proxy. He was himself only a brown belt, but proclaimed he didn't care about belts, he cared about the life stuff and teen / young men stuff he'd advise on, on us working out hard for halve the class then grueling drills of form and workout (often while beating us with that rubber banded bamboo "sword" or while we did "iron body" and took turns punching or kicking each other in specific muscles or bones mostly... shins, forearms... and pounding our knuckles into stuff to harden them... Annnd we never learned to tournament spar, but Leslie was also a red belt in Kung Fu (which I was surprised any existed around here) and brough other older construction guys from the close state over where he takes that, and I think we had a jiu jitsu guy come do lessons (I can't claim / be sure Leslie trained there too or his belt if so, but I'm sure he didn't care about belts...). But we did learn and spend a lot of time grappling and doing full contact sparring. I loved the shit out of that and that time of my life so long ago, learned a lot about myself and my friends and it was the first time I got into really good shape and very competitive, was the first sport I was really good at, the end of the nights when we'd all do our makeshift 'tournaments' of the full contact sparring and Leslie letting the sessions run late. I want to get my son interested or at least safe enough to be confident and not break his wrist if he ever hits anything for now haha. Sorry for rambling... got missing him and nostalgic on this stuff.
In my opinion this is a highly underrated boxing channel. Bloody good tips here. As a total novice here who really enjoys the training & heavy cardio work out it gives, just throwing power punches on a true heavy bag will hurt your hands as well. I know that from experience. Great combination & move advice here. Many thanks. I'll be using these tonight at training.
Newb here. This is one of my favorites videos I’ve seen! Dude, your shots, the coaching, and your speaking cadence and presentation delivery were flawless! Well done! You just earned my subscription.

I really appreciate these videos since I'm getting my new bag next month. I can train alone! I'm starting again since it builds up my courage to go outside, which I haven't done since November 2018 when I got molested. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for making this video. I've recently picked up heavy bag training. I enjoy doing 6-8 3 minute round workouts, but I wipe myself out from always throwing punches. But in this video you showed how to incorporate defense (slips, blocks, parry, etc.) thanks again!
I really appreciate the fact that you even posted this video, I’m on a journey to lose weight and my new heavy bag is really helping I’m just glad to know how to punch it now, it’s like I’m turning fat into muscle with the workouts I do, went from 280-264 now. Thanks for the tips.
I've never had any really formal training and I watch these videos pretty often but I was watching this wondering how to improve me hitting my own heavy bag I have at home and I was shocked this was one of the first videos that I think I didn't learn anything from and I felt a sense of pride and just wanted to share that
Did my first heavy bag workout yesterday and am really sore all over now. Two questions 1. How to deal with this soreness? Should we continue on daily basis or take a break? 2. How do I protect my wrists from getting injured?

Hey buddy, I appreciate the support, but they asked me to be on the first card... it's just not for me. I'm working on getting Vince into the UFC, and training other amateur fighters. That's not an event I am looking to align myself with. Glad to hear you're enjoying the boxing videos!

Nikhil Grave no disrespect to shane but the ufc is the best of the best and you can’t just join the ufc you first make a name for yourself in professional fighting (best choice is mma Bc obviously that’s what the ufc is). That gets the eyes on you and the buzz about you then Dana offers you a contract lol. I wish it was that easy to be in the ufc, but anyways my point is just because he is a good fighter doesn’t mean he can go into the ufc. You ever noticed that fighters in the ufc have something amazing about them? Whether it be wrestling, striking speed, power, combination fluidity, submissions, or just be extremely well rounded. That’s because they are very experienced top of the line fighters and that’s what Dana wants he takes people with a big following for money and people with superb martial arts abilities. If you think you can just waltz in the ufc you got another thing coming. Michael Bisping for example he was one of the most dominant mma artists in europe becoming champion of several belts and was undefeated in the uk. Once he came to the ufc his fucking world got rocked with all the belts he won and how many times he was champion it took him 12 years to win the ufc middleweight title and he got one defense then lost it.

Man, shane i love your videos. Can you help me with coordination of my hands with my feet? I really feel like that is one of the MAJOR keys to getting better and makes a skillful fighter. Im specifically asking for how to be able to hit and move at the same time without losing momentum or feeling awkward (u know what i mean). Thanks for the content!!! Thanks for this! I had my first boxing class the other day and I felt completely lost when hitting the bag. I didn't know what to do when It moved and I was focusing too much on my power. Gonna try to implement some of this today.
Just like he said, keep that opposite hand up at all times. One of the biggest mistakes people that think they can fight end up making is they don't protect themselves at all times. The Refs don't say that before each fight for no reason. So great instructional video.
I love how you look like an unstoppable machine even when you try your best to look like a slow paced beginner. Your skill is at that super high level of mastery where you're unable to hide it ^.^
It's so funny that I've had to fight to survive growing up and thought I was a naturally, good fighter! But after watching this, I realized how sloppy and undisciplined I was!! I just didn't wait for my opponent's to throw. If it was going down, let's go!! I've also had my ass kicked. Now its only for fun, fitness and to show my Sons the correct way! They grew up in a completely different world then me, thank God!! Thanks Shane. love all your vids!!!!
You're a good teacher, very classy! I just went to the gym yesterday hitting the heavy bag and felt like a complete learner. My kicks on it were striking hard but my punches looked and felt disgusting.
That training in isolation won't be "as" effective when you go to the boxing gym. I've trained solo for 3 months and once I went into boxing gym it was waaay different. I've watched people spar so I went up for my turn and Everytime they rushed me I went straight into a ball, so social interaction plays a key part.
@@chaysecourtney3701 Not toxic, just stating facts. I've had lots of kids tell me they want to train, but feel they aren't ready for the gym. They fool around at home for months, then show up months behind the kids who just showed up and learned. I'm not sure if you're running a competitive gym or strictly fitness oriented, but any competitive coach will advise people not to train unsupervised. It takes longer to fix bad habits than to train a totally green person.
Great question! There is definitely a "reload" of the hips, if you imagine throw two lead hooks in a row. Especially on the heavybag, you can use the reciprocated force to assist in getting that hip torque. Also make sure you're not OVER-ROTATING the hips with your first strike, otherwise it will take too long to reload and throw the sequential punches. Hope this helps. Lemme know if you need this answer in video format!
fightTIPS Shane, I’d like to see that in a video. My hooks need some work as well. Quick thing for you: does learning how to be a padwork coach help in training?
omg shane i have the best idea, how about you start doing livestreams on youtube of u hitting the heavy bag or working out in general, i’d watch the whole thing forreal. might even learn a thing or two from it
Question: Isn't it bad if you always move into the direction of the last punch? Because let's say it gets a habit and you fight against a real opponent, wouldn't it make you more predictable?
Try it bro .... you never truly feel stupid until you try to do something that looks so easy, as moving and punching , and creating angles , as you do if you are a beginner at it and your brain struggles coordinating...the first 10 or so pad workouts I felt ashamed and humbled as never before :)) once you get good at moving in the direction of your last punch you can stop it and basically fake it , quickly switching to opposite direction and have your opponent swing at air ... check floyd , lomachenko, Josh Kelly, Billy Saunders... and there are more names , but this guys are some of the best slick move boxers..
Somehow even though you're not instructing in person you remember the minutia and the little things to help get the most efficient work while instilling some great fundamentals. I have asthma and have taken a liking to boxing for cardio. I've seen an improvement in my running times and it feels good when I know I'm training but also learning or getting better at a skill. Great video. Much love from the deep south
I loved the drunken haymakers at the beginning!😆 I've seen that so many times at the gym. Great channel, a lot of information and delivered very efficiently. Thanks man 👊👍
Great info..just got a bag and em going full circle. Starting working out at 12 yrs old taught by a pro feather weight ,I gravitated to just the weights not so much the boxing. Well after years out of the gym. Working on my farm has mad me stronger then Iv every been. But this bag is my gym now also, especially for cardio .btw im 50yrs old now. Thanks this video was helpful
Wow I didn't knew I was using the heavy bag correctly since I practice on a normal gym with few proper equipment and you're my only way to learn martial arts
I've been subscribed to your channel for quite some time now and even though I haven't trained in a while, watching your videos makes me want to jump right back into it! Keep up the good work!

Excellent skills you have! And i just started using the bag learned a lot from ur video tutorial-)
Lol you had to fight to survive. Where you frrom, Iraq?
@@LetterToGodFromMeToYou on god😭
You're a good teacher, very classy!
I just went to the gym yesterday hitting the heavy bag and felt like a complete learner. My kicks on it were striking hard but my punches looked and felt disgusting.
My time is based on the song length, then i go on the elliptical for another song and do it 3 times to keep my heart racing
I love channels like this that teach people!
Love the first combination! "Don't be that guy!" Awesome Shane, classic shit mate! Lol
Thanks Shane for the past three years I've been watching your videos and u help me a lot
I’m gonna join boxing soon for now I been training for a year and a half alone.
That training in isolation won't be "as" effective when you go to the boxing gym. I've trained solo for 3 months and once I went into boxing gym it was waaay different. I've watched people spar so I went up for my turn and Everytime they rushed me I went straight into a ball, so social interaction plays a key part.
TurtleField damn good luck I think you gon need it
TurtleField You wasted a year and a half
daniel higgins why so toxic he can make it
@@chaysecourtney3701 Not toxic, just stating facts. It takes longer to fix bad habits than to train a totally green person.
i don't even have access to any heavybag to where i live but i like watching ur vids, i always learn a thing or two
How do you throw multiple punches on the same side while turning your hips?
u reset back to a neutral hip position and turn them again but it has to be done quickly
@@jasonw293 Every aspect of training helps in training.
@@fighttips yes why not. can you do that?👌😁
omg shane i have the best idea, how about you start doing livestreams on youtube of u hitting the heavy bag or working out in general, i’d watch the whole thing forreal. might even learn a thing or two from it
bro keep going all love from iraq💙

I love these tips.
I watched you channel grow Shane sir.
Its been years, yet I'm still learning
Me too, buddy! Always a student 🙏
Always interesting videos. Thanks for tips and hi from Italy.
I watched this video before I got my heavy bag. Great training tool for free. Thanks man. Great video and your technique looks great
Love the vids bro.. Can u put a 2nd camera to see your footwork?
finally a heavy-bag video with some real smoke, no nonsense. thx
Question: Isn't it bad if you always move into the direction of the last punch? Because let's say it gets a habit and you fight against a real opponent, wouldn't it make you more predictable?
Yes! I just wanted to give some cues to help beginners out, without giving TOO much info. But I highly recommend switching it up 👍 Great question.
@@fighttips Okay, thank you for the answer 👍
Yes
Try it bro .... you never truly feel stupid until you try to do something that looks so easy, as moving and punching , and creating angles , as you do if you are a beginner at it and your brain struggles coordinating...the first 10 or so pad workouts I felt ashamed and humbled as never before :)) once you get good at moving in the direction of your last punch you can stop it and basically fake it , quickly switching to opposite direction and have your opponent swing at air ... check floyd , lomachenko, Josh Kelly, Billy Saunders... and there are more names , but this guys are some of the best slick move boxers..
I mean its okay to do that, its not okay to ALWAYS do that 😂 always got mix things up, keep the opponent guessing
I feel lik Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite when I'm filming myself hitting the heavy bag
😂👍🏼
I loved the drunken haymakers at the beginning!😆 I've seen that so many times at the gym. Great channel, a lot of information and delivered very efficiently. Thanks man 👊👍
0:19 Everyone is 'that' guy when they first begin 😂
Vorkandor I was so bad at the start, I hit the bag and the bag ended up bashing me and I fell back, the coach just looked disappointed loool
You’re crisp and exact with punches. Like the distance from the bag tip too. Also great about keeping hands up. Good stuff, Thanks!
I didn’t have the sound on at the beginning, I was like wait, what is he doing? Lol.
You look so fluid and precise. Looks very professional
Great teacher! Thanks for the tips!
Bro you dont know how much your vids helped me out !! Keep em coming
Thanks for the solid advice. What's your thoughts on wearing a 20 lb vest while doing a heavy bag routine?
Do it 😎. Your stamina will be insane

Thanks for the tips these really do help me😎👍
dude I like the fact that your punching bag has your logo! great advice by the way!
This kind of bag is obviously not best for uppercuts, but what do you do if it's all you got?
I've been subscribed to your channel for quite some time now and even though I haven't trained in a while, watching your videos makes me want to jump right back into it! Keep up the good work!
Haha, love the funny intro...
Luis Hernandez it’s not far from reality watching idiots at the gym hit the bag
Just starting out and this was pretty much the perfect video to watch- great content, keep up the good work brother
