Had a little boxing in college and learned just how much craft and hard work is involved. I've had a heavy bag in my garage for many years, and now that I'm seventy years old I find that it's excellent for cardio, stamina, and upper-body muscle tone, which is all the more important for me after having six-bypass open heart surgery three years ago. Watching this video I realize I'm doing some things wrong, but then I don't plan on getting in the ring or getting in too many street fights. Probably wouldn't work out too well. 😁

Great video Tony. As you would already know, the heavy bag is popular but can encourage bad habits. I wanted to add to the points you made - my old coach use to tell me: if the bag is swinging towards you and out (in a straight line) throw straight punches as the bag swings AWAY (great for footwork, timing), if the bag swings side to side, throw hooks and uppercuts, again, try to hit the bag as it swings away as it is very easy to simply punch the bag as it swings toward you, but is risking wrist damage over time. Lastly, the biggest mistake I continue to make is to telegraph my punches with my eyes when going to the body, so I try to keep my eyes focused on the one spot on the bag. Cheers from Oz.

I've only seen a two or three of these videos but the instruction TJ gives out is extensive. If I were a serious boxer this would make me train every day !! I'm not fit enough but these videos make me *wanna* train every day !!
Top notch instruction once again. But also: the speed and power this guy has! For those of you who haven’t done it yet, the heavy bag is really.... heavy. It doesn’t move very much when you hit it, unless you have great power. Like Tony
Tony Jeffries is one of THE best Boxing instruction channel I've ever been so lucky to find. Awesome Boxer, and great Instructor. I subscribed immediately after a few of his other helpful videos. Thanks Tony for all the great advice and coaching!👍
@@Tony_Jeffries Wow! You replied, I feel special now haha. Well since I have you're attention for the moment, could you do a lesson on the Shoe shine technique like Ray Leonard? I strive to be better everyday because of you're lessons! Thank you!
Only had to watch 1/2 a video to know this is worth subscribing to. Amazing that a guy or gal can get world class boxing training off of their phone at home. People complain about how bad things are these days and how much better the past was, but I’d argue there isn’t a better era to live in if you open your eyes and aren’t a lazy ass. Thanks to all that contribute to the best parts of humanity…that means you Tony good shit!
Hey Tony, I'm 41 but always loved boxing even though I did boxing for fitness. Your vids are great man! Appreciate the knowledge you give in these vids👍
One more thing I’d add is to bend the knees and hips a little. Standing completely upright with your hips and knees locked out prevents you from utilizing your body more to throw punches. Also having your legs bend a bit and hips opened up also helps with footwork and head movement since you’re already in an athletic stance it’s a smoother transition into footwork and moving your head.
He always talks about looking good when you are doing something, makes it sound like everybody goes to the gym just to see what other people think of them. Anyway great videos!
Hi mate - most of the people going to my gym are doing boxing for fitness, and It's not what other people think of them - but it's for personal improvement The more people think they are in good form - the more they will feel good in their training... You know what I mean mate? it's for Personal
Gotta say your videos are probably the best instructional based that I've seen. Really appreciate you taking the time to show and explain the technique and drills! Thanks!!
Mike, I have Parkinson’s and the latest research suggest boxing is an excellent exercise to do with this ailment. Your total package with respect to hitting the heavy can only help with getting more muscles involved. With just the basics I can see tremendous improvements in my workouts as I deal with this ailment. Thank you.
Tony, I wonder if your hand injuries were caused by the way boxers are taught to strike? In karate, practitioners are taught to hit with only the two largest knuckles. That not only concentrates all your power into a smaller area for deeper penetration but it focuses your power into the larger, stronger bones in the hand. That's why karate practitioners do knuckle push-ups on just those two knuckles to toughen them up. In boxing, they are taught to hit with the whole hand - all four knuckles. Sometimes, as in a hook, blows land with just the two smaller knuckles. It's not hard to break those smaller bones in the hand and in the smaller knuckles. They just can't take the pounding that the larger knuckles and bones can take. For the most part, boxers can get away with hitting with the whole hand since their hands are wrapped tightly and they wear big, padded gloves. But, as it seems in your case, your bones may be more fragile than most and just can't take the force on those smaller bones. Let me add that your advice is GOLDEN. Everything you say is probably what Cus D'Amato told to Mike Tyson. I'm going to find all your videos so I can get the best advice and training.
Your advice has been so beneficial to my boxing game. Unfortunately my bag broke because of weathering and me leaving it outside. So i decided to buy a new one UNFILLED. I was thinking of putting the old filling from my old bag to this new one. Do you have any reccommendations on maybe the best way to fill your new heavy bag?
Could you do a vid on the behind the scenes on how you prepare for a fight by studying tapes you have on your next opponent and how you strategize for the fight? Big thanks awesome content as always. Cheers!

Hi Jeffrie and many thanks for your very good instructional videos and the pleasure to take part of your vast knowledge in boxing. I would LOVE to see a similar video done for an uppercut/cigar bag!!! BTW, you have THE BEST videos on the Tube, bar none! You're always concise and direct to the point. It's not always easy to spend 18 minutes, for example, listening to someone talk about the proper way to throw a jab. You offer golden nuggets in a compact format. Cheers, Tony!

I recorded my last round (my all-out round) today, and I can say that I didn't look like a pro 😂 Im not bumbed about it though, because I can see that I'm progressing, and that's what matters! The recording also exposed some weird stuff I'm doing, that I hadn't noticed before, so that's a plus too.
I prefer the 80 pound heavy bag, nevermind the heavier over 100 pound ones (except the filled with water types to really perfect power hooks). Simply because in my mind, a bag that won't move much will have you used to not moving much, and no opponent is going to just stand still for you. Thus 80 pounds for me is the perfect weight for it will stand still if I hit it light and it will definitely move around if I hit it normal and will definitely fly if I really hit it hard no matter the punch, forcing me to get used to chasing/dodging/hitting a moving target (crucial for kicks if you incorporate the basic bellow the belt ones like the mule kick, you definitely want to be able to shot it at a moving target which can be very challenging at first due to timing and getting used to shot it without telegraphing it the moment the bag comes into range).
So many variations on heavy bag work. Depends on your goals and what you’re trying to accomplish (endurance, power, speed, accuracy, technique) Do you, do your thing. Figure out what works for you and don’t give a damn what people have to say unless it will benefit your goals.
Hit it when it comes back, not when it's swinging again on your opposite side. By hitting it when it's coming toward you, you counter the swinging force thereby slowing it down. You can do this even when throwing a hook by either throwing another hook or by rotating to the direction of the incoming bag.
Move around the bag and hit it at different angles to steady it imagine its an opponent that moves around cause in a real match the opponent will be moving around
If you’re hitting it right, it shouldn’t be swinging too much - try snapping you shots out, not worrying too much about big power, and don’t ‘push’ the bag with your shots. Or maybe get a heavier bag. Hope this helps ✌🏼✌🏼
Hi sir , I don't have a heavy bag with me , I only have small 35kg soft punching bag.... And it swings very much once I hit a punch. So please make a video on how punch on a soft punching bag which swings a lot...
Tie a weight to it that sits on the floor, also letting that bag swing is okay too because it’s moving like an opponent and forces you to adjust , footwork etc. And don’t smash, just tap like he said

Like Tony
Thank you mate, means a lot
Great video 🥊💯 Thank you for all these detailed explanations and these tips 🙏🏻 Number 4 !🔥🔥🔥
Thank you mate, means a lot
I quit drinking a few months ago and your videos have really helped me stay on track with this new boxing hobby. Thank you man!
My heavy bag gets super hard on one side, so it rlly hurts to throw left hooks, now my left is weak.
I’ve only had one boxing lesson but this video just confirms how good that lesson was…I should go back to that gym. 🥊
Tony Jeffries is one of THE best Boxing instruction channel I've ever been so lucky to find. Awesome Boxer, and great Instructor. I subscribed immediately after a few of his other helpful videos. Thanks Tony for all the great advice and coaching!👍
Thanks ma man, means alot
@@Tony_Jeffries Wow! You replied, I feel special now haha. Well since I have you're attention for the moment, could you do a lesson on the Shoe shine technique like Ray Leonard? How to practice it, when and how to use it and how to defend against it.
And again, I appreciate everything you do for us beginners. Keep up the great work!
Thank you mate, means a lot 🙏🏻
Quá hay !
Hey Tony, I'm 41 but always loved boxing even though I did boxing for fitness. Your vids are great man! Appreciate the knowledge you give in these vids👍
Thanks ma man, means a lot. It all depends on the person and your ability , never to old to start to learn boxing
I’m just starting heavy bag workouts. Way better than lifting weights. So much art and discipline to learn while boxing, in and outta the ring.
do you also box mate?
@@Tony_Jeffries No just do it for the workout mostly. I plan on learning a thing or two about boxing someday and just do some sparring here and there.
I started boxing at 44. And I like your videos. They make me work hard. espect from India. And I love your accent too.
I appreciate this basic approach as I've just started boxing for fitness.
I just started my mma training few weeks back...I use almost all things I learn from from, Thank you 🥊
One of the finest boxing videos ever. Move the head is pure gold
Thanks ma man, means alot
Repetition is the master of skill that's what I always say. I do this to be the best. Push yourself everyday
Right mate
Is nobody going to mention the sick mural in the background? Legendary
He always talks about looking good when you are doing something, makes it sound like everybody goes to the gym just to see what other people think of them. Anyway great videos!
Hi mate - most of the people going to my gym are doing boxing for fitness, and It's not what other people think of them - but it's for personal improvement
The more people think they are in good form - the more they will feel good in their training... You know what I mean mate? it's for Personal
Gotta say your videos are probably the best instructional based that I've seen. Really appreciate you taking the time to show and explain the technique and drills!
Thanks!!
my physical and mental health have changed a lot sinced I started learning boxing last year. Your videos are really helpful, thank you so much ^^ !
Mike, I have Parkinson’s and the latest research suggest boxing is an excellent exercise to do with this ailment. Your total package with respect to hitting the heavy can only help with getting more muscles involved. With just the basics I can see tremendous improvements in my workouts as I deal with this ailment. Thank you.
The quallity of Tony's video is so good that I'm suprised how little subscribers he has.
He’s growing fast
I got a vid for heavy bag recommendations mate, maybe it will help you in the future. Check this out: ruclips.net/video/uEIf1fbsMJI/видео.html
Could you do a vid on the behind the scenes on how you prepare for a fight by studying tapes you have on your next opponent and how you strategize for the fight? Big thanks awesome content as always. Cheers!

I’m new to boxing and your guides are the most simple and easy to learn thanks man
Glad you like them!
I always move around the bag when I am boxing the bag. At the gym, I have 360 degrees room to step in and out and around it and pop my jab.
Nice!
Thanks Tony for your valuable time and for simplifying a at times complex sport.
Thanks mate! - You can check all my videos here: ruclips.net/user/TonyJeffries1videos
Tony! Thanks for this. Just got my heavy bag. Lots of hard work ahead!
Technically I'm a Beginner but I have been interested in Boxing for the last 13 yrs. I just haven't had the finances to pursue it. I'm preparing myself daily to start by the Spring next yr
You can start right now mate - even at your home you can practice boxing...
@@Tony_Jeffries absolutely I'm not giving I wish I could of started fighting in my early twenties. Unfortunately I would set back financially I have heard of guys like Ray Mercer who started Boxing late. When I was 16 I wasn't mature so I guess everything is falling in place now. Thanks for your videos Tony.
If you wanna look like a pru listen 👂 to Tony Jeffries he's the best💥💯
Appreciate it ma man
tony, you've helped me more than my coach has, and you've done it for free 😂

Hi Tony, I'm Jorge, writing from Madrid (Spain). Congrats for all your contents; they are plenty of sense. I'm practicing technical box for many years (training, not competition); and your videos are undoubtedly reflecting your high technical skills, so helpful for progressing.
Thank you mate, means a lot
Lots of love , appreciation and blessing all the way from Top the world Country known as Nepal.🇳🇵🇳🇵. This channel is a gem for us..💓💓
Thank you mate, means a lot
Hey Tony! I have a left shoulder that is a candidate for replacement. Is there any way to support that shoulder so I can still do, at least some heavy bag work?
Hi Jeffrie and many thanks for your very good instructional videos and the pleasure to take part of your vast knowledge in boxing. I wonder however what kind of allround punching bag you prefer, weight, height an width? And also how heavy gloves you prefer when punching the bag? Thank you very much!

How are you there mate? Is your Gym open in Egypt during this pandemic mate?
@@Tony_Jeffries unfortunately no , iam training at home , we hope from god to end this soon 🤲
I love you saying “comin back at ya!”
I recorded my last round (my all-out round) today, and I can say that I didn't look like a pro 😂
Im not bumbed about it though, because I can see that I'm progressing, and that's what matters!
The recording also exposed some weird stuff I'm doing, that I hadn't noticed before, so that's a plus too.
This is correct mate " I'm progressing, and that's what matters!"
Brilliant I just come across this guy I’ve just bought a bag and gloves can’t wait to get started, thanks Tony 👍👍👍👍
Good luck mate! What bag did you bought??
Hi Tony I’ve bought a RDK bag and gloves been in there last couple of nights, I’ll be watching some of your videos for more great tips 👍👍
Tony ..you are a great inspiration and Teacher !
I appreciate that ma man!
How do i know what size boxing gloves i should buy i have goos size hands not huge, but not small?
Hello Tony I watch your videos from Brazil. It's an amazing work and it helping me improve my skills on boxing. Thanks.
Thanks ma man - You gyms in Brazil open rightt now?
Thanks for this. "I wanna look good to feel good"
I prefer the 80 pound heavy bag, nevermind the heavier over 100 pound ones (except the filled with water types to really perfect power hooks).
Fantastic clear explanations.Youve already pointed out real mistakes I was making.Thank you so much for your no bs approach.
Glad it was helpful! Have you tried it out on the heavybag Larry?
So many variations on heavy bag work. Depends on your goals and what you’re trying to accomplish (endurance, power, speed, accuracy, technique) Do you, do your thing. Figure out what works for you and don’t give a damn what people have to say unless it will benefit your goals.
Fantastic Tony I start boxing because of you and Mike Tyson
How do we deal with the bag once it starts swinging? Especially when we're throwing combinations, i.e. Hooks after a 1,2 punch. Thanks man.
Facts i got same question ,, i mean i switch sometimes different angles but would like to hear more answers
You can hit it mate to stop its motion
thanks for that lesson I'm 76 but i love Boxing Since I was in my amateur time thanks sheer.
Great Mackum accent...really good 'no nonsense' coaching technique. Good work Tony.
Thank you mate, means a lot
These videos are really inspiring as am really passionate about boxing esp. the punching bag at thre gym. Will practice as much i as can
Im learning boxing. the same reason as everyone. its all about the sport and martial arts. But more importantly its about exterminating my enemies.

And don’t smash, just tap like he said
@@donovanjones4175 ok! Thank you 😊❤️
You can punch the bag again to make it stop
