I think the insult was that he was trying not to be gay, not that being gay is bad.

I'm gay & did not get offended by what she said. I understood it as the people who are the loudest in there hate towards gay people & there preoccupation with oppressing & passing laws to ban our basic human rights, are more likely gay them self. She is not saying that being gay is wrong.

I loved it. This is Jennifer Lawrence. The people in the room weren't offended and Mike Pence deserves whatever he gets. You're reading too much into this.

I feel like she knows calling someone gay is not an insult, but for him, it’s probably a big insult, I feel like the joke is that he’s the one with the big problem with it and he thinks it worked on himself so he can make it work on other people

The whole thing is just awkward. I wonder if she wishes she could undo the whole thing now. It’s awkward to watch. My feelings as a lesbian were that she was dissing Mike Pence and all the shitty things he did/does to hate lgbtq+ people. Also I get the joke that people who hate gays the most are usually gay themself if they are super religious or conservative-usually the two go together. The jokes were cringey but I think well intended. Silly Jennifer.
Also side note: I had to leave my religion of 30 years in order to learn to love myself. Best decision I ever made. I’m living the best life now.

Joke would've worked better about Michelle Bachmann's clearly gay husband who runs conversation therapy clinics for teenagers with convervative parents. But less timely

I think the joke was fine, she was not saying being gay is bad she was leaning on the fact many 'straight' people who worked hard to oppress gays must be gay and oppressed themselves.

Honestly…anyone watching the GLAAD awards is likely to understand it’s completely in jest. I would worry about jokes with homophobia outside of those spaces. My two cents.

Thank you for addressing this Graeme, I’m so happy that someone else out there feels the same way that I do (especially another gay man!). I haven’t been able to shake this whole speech, not just that joke. It made me feel awful and dehumanized, especially due to it coming from someone I admired and thought I could trust.
The joke you referenced here is a classic example of homophobia via toxic masculinity. Shaming someone by suggesting that they’re homosexual; because being homosexual is effeminate/unmanly and therefore shameful, laughable and unacceptable. “Disturbed” is putting it lightly, to witness Jennifer normalizing this behavior, especially in front of an entire crowd of queer people.
Can’t say I’m surprised, though. If anything, this just proves how normal/accepted it still is.
Meanwhile, for you, it has resurfaced trauma. And you’re not alone. I grew up in the early ‘00s where “that’s gay” and “no homo” were part of seemingly everyone’s vocabulary around my age. But most people (especially a privileged straight white woman) would not understand how that language compounds the shame we live with or how it keeps people in the closet.
But, this is Jennifer Lawrence. Nobody is going to bat an eye at her comments due to her sheer influence and likability. All we can do is lead by your example and use our voice. Educate. I’m proud of you for using your platform to make a difference for our community.

So the term gay is an insult? 😂

    • @addyvarlick6204

I don't think that was the point. She was criticizing his stance on conversion therapy and emphasizing the hypocrisy of his legislature against the lgbt community while also being potentially closeted himself. Since a lot of high ranking Republicans are in fact... closeted. And use their vitriol to marginalize people. That was the point. If it was missed then that's unfortunate because it was pretty obvious satire to me.

I love Jennifer, but I do not think it is respectful to make fun of the former VP. I am not even strong on politics, but I just don't love it in general. It seemed to all be in bad taste.

An "ally" ? Did she NOT get the memo or KNOW her passive aggressive homophobia would be forgiven and even cheered on because you know, she is Jennifer Lawrence.
No matter how much you hate someone, ESPECIALLY if yoy hate someone, accusing them of being a closeted gay man, is DISGUSTING because it actually IS meant as an INSULT to BEING a closeted gay man.
But of course. She gets a pass.

    • @addyvarlick6204
      @addyvarlick6204 21 день назад

I really don't think that was the point at all... Pence promotes conversion therapy. Her satire was highlighting the hypocrisy of being potentially closeted while also promoting and passing legislature that marginalizes LGBT identifying persons... it wasn't to make the term gay as an acceptable derogatory term...it's satire.

Jokes are supposed to be funny either in content and/or delivery. I do not believe J-Law's Mike Pence bit satisfied criteria to succeed in either category. That being said, I am not personally offended by jokes that don't land, including this one.
I do question why either J-Law or her writers felt compelled to bring up Mike Pence, who has been out of office for almost four years (and thus is not in any position of power), at the GLAAD Media Awards. He has no current relevance and is not an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, so what was the objective?
This feels like a joke that someone wanted to do four years ago, but didn't have the opportunity at the time, so they just banked it - and chose now to debut this knee-slapper.

This was part of her performance at GLAAD? Who invited her? Did they pay her? She doesn't seem like an ally.

Not a fan of J Laws interviews or her as a person playing herself but I love most of her movies 🍿🤩
She’s a mother now, it would’ve been cool to see her play it professional and be a proud ally when introducing her friend. But of course she always has to play the “I’m so drunk” character and “naturally relatable”… annoying cool girl person.
