    As a life long Firebird fan of every generation it's tough seeing them beat on but all the wrecked ones are what make the survivors so valuable.

      Yup you'll get squeal on hardpack , back as kids some 30+yrs ago we stopped and did a burnout on some.
      We hadda stop and laugh our asses off after the squealing.
      But when the loose gravel is flying like rooster tails and it's dubbed in for the movie it's hilarious!

    LOVE this early 70's Trans-Am, I think its one of the coolest looking cars in the world. Unfortunately, these cars were never exported to the UK which is a shame.
    Although there are quite a few that made it to these shores, and I have countless
    photo's of them from car shows I've been to.

    Check out the scene of him trying to get the headlights on... That switch is a head light switch you'd find on a early 70's Ford!

      Yeah I thought that was in the wrong place. My headlight switch on my '75 Firebird is on the left side on the dash. And I actually thought at first he was trying to push in the cigarette lighter. lol

    For the ones who asked if a Pantera could actually beat a Trans Am, it would be a close battle and come down to who was driving. The 1973 SD455 T/A ran 0-60 in 5.2, 1/4 mile in 13.54@ 104.29 and had a top speed ~165mph. The 1973 Pantera went 0-60 in 5.5, 1/4mile in 14.2@99.87 and had a top speed of ~ 159mph.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 10 лет назад +1

      165 mph top speed for a '73 SD455 T/A??? Seriously doubt it. I realize Pontiac under rated the SD455 at 290/310hp(depending on year), but even with an honest 350hp, it would take pedestrian 2.73 or higher(lower numerically) rear gears to get to 165, and that would destroy it's 13 second 1/4mile time. I'd say, reasonably, with 3.42 rear gears and in a great state of tune, it might hit 140( and that's exceeding 6000rpms, which is over the stock SD455's powerband). More likely is 130 with the stock camshaft and 3.42 gearing. It's all in the mathematical crunching of gear ratio/tire height/rpm(and horsepower too). 165 and a 13 second 1/4mile just don't add up. Maybe a 15 second 1/4mile(due to 2.73 gearing) and 160ish is doable, but not with gearing to get a 13 second ET.

    • @banditrw27
      @banditrw27 10 лет назад +6

      Well, I'm not trying to convince you but the Pantera only had a 330HP Ford 351 Cleveland and the SD455's actual HP for 1973 was more closer to 425 and the cars came with two choices of rear end gears, the 3.08 and the 3.42. So the Pantera was close to those same speeds so why would it be so unbelievable for the T/A to do it...plus I've been in a '73 SD T/A and witnessed it peg the 160 speedo. My 70 1/2 T/A with the RAII 400 and 3.55 gears would do an honest 145 and that is passed it's "so called" 6000 redline. The 1989 Turbo T/A had similar numbers to the '73 SD with a 301 RWHP Turbo Buick 231 V6 engine and a top speed 0f 161.
      I'm not saying anyone is wrong but unless you actually have the cars it's hard to know the entire truth. Nice discussion, thanks.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 10 лет назад +1

      J Watkins SD455 with 425hp stock??? You realize the SD455 has a C/R in the 8.5:1 ratio, right? Unless it's super or turbo charged, no way 425hp stock. SD455 is capable of 750hp+ with the right parts, but bone stock, I don't think so.

    • @ziiofswe
      @ziiofswe 9 лет назад

    Back in the early '70s the Pantera was labeled as the fastest production car, but that was probably top speed. I'd think the 455-SD Trans Am would take a win in a 1/4 mile race, then the Pantera would take over from there, lol.

I was thinking, that means it has a 455 HO. That's a way cool thing to see in action in the day. @leisel barclay Yes, the ones he kicked for the filming, but was pointing out that is definitely Hollywood - try it on real headlights. Steel toe boots a Must!

    Every single car in that film will cost a fortune to buy today.
    Every single modern cars you ll see in the streets will worth nothing in 30 years.

    The Pantera was fast, but while it had a much higher top speed, acceleration wise it would be quite close to a highly modded Trans Am like the one in the film.

    If you stop the video at 6:05 just after he kicks the drivers bulb and moves his foot you can _barely_ make out the grill which ID's as a 70-71 grill. Would be an absolute shame but not at all a surprise if they actually destroyed a T/A of either year. I wonder what year the other "T/A" was and also whether each of them was a real T/A or they just found parts which wouldn't have been particularly difficult to source. I'm such nerd.

      @banditrw27 6 лет назад +1

      All 1971-1973 Trans Ams had 455's, the '71-72 had the 455 H.O. and the '73 had 455 and the SD-455

      J Watkins I owned a 73 455 SD 4 speed all black black interior Torque trust mag's car was a beast definitely one of the fastest car that year in 77 was a shame how slow they became especially if u had the 403 Olds

      I was always a Olds guy. But it was so sad. Seeing the likes of the Firebirds might 455 becoming hardly nothing and the GTO's 389 with the 3 duces then it's 400 also by the mid 70's turn into just nothingness. Really sad. I think those shaker 455 cars were some of the last of the "glory" says of muscle though.

      Savage Tilley lol I completely agree the Shaker was my favorite part of the Trans an n I was also n Oldsmobile fan I HAD a a 67 442 before the change over in 68 Hurst 4 speed that car FLEW n never let me down she was all yellow Black interior , straight pipes I eventually sold n regret it to This day then in 83 I bought the Olds Hurst with the lighting Rods but the 307 Had to come out n dropped a 350 Rocket in her

      Savage Tilley it was sad to see what muscle CAR'S became then the Pontiac 301 Turbo was probably one of the biggest bomb s EVER to come out of DETROIT n 82 was a nice style Trans am but that 305 especially the Crossfire horrible engine s a very confused time the only thing Oldsmobile n Pontiac had going for them was the 373 rears
