  • In June of every year, Panola United Methodist Church in Sumter County, Alabama puts on a barbecue fundraising event featuring six whole hogs cooked over a pit for 24 hours. Sumter County is known for it's barbecue clubs, and while this event isn't technically a club, it's part of a long tradition of barbecue in the area.

I grew up in Orange Beach Alabama during the 80's. Back then, we always had community get togethers. Once a month we would have a potluck dinner at the community center. It was always nice going to that because you knew just what to expect from certain people. Like who made the best casseroles and the best desserts. It really was a treat that you looked forward to every month. On top of that, we would have neighborhood fish fries. Everyone pitched in and contributed toward it all. It all was so wonderful. People just had such a sense of community pride their back then. Now it has grown into just a great big tourist destination and lacks that feeling it once had. It is still a fabulous place, but it just isn't the same. Thankfully, I married a young lady from Sumter County, and I get to experience it all again. Sumter truly is a wonderful place with wonderful people, and outstanding bbq. Just as seen in this short video. It has the same feeling that I once felt as a child looking forward to the once a month potluck dinners at the community center. It's great to see things like this continue, and hopefully it will continue for generations to come. America needs more of this. This truly is ...Alabama.

I grew up in Livingston which is the county seat of Sumter County. It’s really neat that each little community in the county has their own BBQ club. My family used to belong to the Epes (pronounced Epps) BBQ club. I have also been to the Emelle (pronounced like saying the letters M and L together-ML). Those BBQ clubs are just a cool and unique part of Sumter County. Each club also has their own sauce recipe that’s been cooked the same way since the clubs probably started. If anyone gets a chance to attend one then I would highly recommend going. You’ll eat great food and get to meet a lot of nice people.

That is southern love and hospitable living, you realize it is mostly people between 50 and 90years organizing this. As youth we need to also have more of these.

You're not wrong, but there seems to be a trend of younger adults having to leave these more rural Alabama areas in order to find job opportunities. But a lot of folks return for this event, and that's wonderful.
