CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - We’re just outside Charleston, South Carolina, and on Sunday, I was invited over to my friend John Haney’s ( / alveronbbqco8462 ) house for a real deal southern barbecue. It was an incredible experience, watching John and bbq and all of his side dishes including collard greens and the greatest bbq mac n cheese you’ll ever have.
Additionally, in South Carolina is the only place you'll find hash, a mixture of all the pig bits including the face made into a stew. There's ketchup based hash and mustard based hash, and we had a full lesson on South Carolina hash.
John Haney (Alveron BBQ) makes the best bbq grills in the United States all hand made - so definitely hit him up: / alveronbbqco8462 and he also one of the greatest legends of American bbq.
Huge thank you to John and his family for hosting my family and I on this amazing Sunday meal.

When you’re literally invited to the cookout. Lol. I loved this. Thank you for honoring the culture Mark. This was a beautiful video. 💕
💯🙌🤣
Mark had to stand in the bush with all that noise 😂
This awesome to men cooking like this truly amazing
Love that you're showing more Black American cuisine on your channel!
What exactly makes that black cuisine?
@@lan92034 😂 That is exactly what people say when they have no clue what they are talking about. Black cuisine doesnt exist, it's a made up term. 🤡
@@freshasadaisy4782 Here in the South, we call it Soul Food.
@@bianchiveloce1 I call it diabetes. Half of the people there were obese.
@@potusthepotatooftheuniteds1034yea cause they eat too much of that soul food, it's a southern us food culture thing not a black culture even though in slavery times most if not all the cooks in those plantation kitchens they were black. You can't be eating that fried chicken, mac n cheese, pork ribs, yams, peach gobbler and whatever else food all the time make you gain weight fast but it's the high carbs and sugar and sodium that'll make you get diabetes and high blood pressure.
as a ex New yorker living in SC .. i can promise you there is nothing better than a Carolina backyard BBQ in folding chairs and pop up tents....summer time heaven

Now that is what a family bbq is all about. That food looks delicious. Mark I love how you just blend into ANY culture and respect and learn that culture in the process. Awesome video Mark.
Asians are awesome people
When Mark takes a bite and starts laughing... you know it's A1!
He is an entertainer for sure and all his social media followers 🙏🏻🤭😎
he does that almost every time.
Does it mean everything is A1? Not possible!!!
Mark is the ultimate nice guy not to mention his family and film crew. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him say food “not delicious” so funny 😆 I have one question what if he said the absolute truth about his food tasting stories? Would his Chanel be as popular? My experiences in foods and cuisines around the world has not always been good or delicious! Whether it’s on the street, in the jungle, in a Michelin style restaurant, or any other restaurant or cafe! 🤔🤭😉 so I’m not sure
@@touche6792 he appreciates every dish that goes in his mouth but there's levels and if youre Marks fan you'd understand his expressions
@@touche6792 true, but that bbq looked f*ing amazing lol.
This is the realest example of a SC cookout I’ve ever seen on RUclips. The plating is spot on.
Mark can eat more food in a thankful manner than any small guy I've seen. And, this is one of the best episodes I've watched.
Yes, he takes big bites
That’s what I want to know…How is he not fat? I envy him?
Mr. John is a good friend of our family. He is the sweetest man in the world and he has some of the best BBQ and Mac n cheese I’ve ever had!! I’m so jealous that I wasn’t there that day 😢
John's the kinda person I'd love to talk and cook with for the day!
This brought back memories when I was working and attending college there back in the day. So many places to find people cooking traditional food. One elderly lady I met said she had the nickname Beans because her job was to cook Lima beans at at a restaurant near me foot of the Ashley River bridge. She was talking way back in the fifties. Also there was a woman from Orangeburg that made some great Hash. Glad that John got some exposure because Hash goes way back with folks
up and down the Coast. Hope he invites
some of the rural school kids who may
not get thus experience often.❤ 17:35
I like that you included the prayer in your video. Food looks fantastic!
This makes me so proud to be born and raised in South Carolina
AMEN!!!
This is just a beautiful video, these men are masters at their craft and happy that Mark memorialized this forever on youtube. The amount of respect to tradition shown here is fantastic.
This is insanely impressive. Every piece of meat looked so juicy and beautifully charred, and you can tell every side dish got a lot of love. That smoked mac and cheese!! Gotta salute this amount of skill 👏
South Carolina did that😉😋👍🇺🇲
🔥🔥🔥
I totally have to agree. That slow cook does it best. 👍👍
It's all about the love!
Born & raised in SC. This is how we do it! Flavor city always. No bland food ever. Optimal soul food at its finest.

Not only is Johns food absolutely DREAMY! but he seems like such a pure soul, what an amazing person. Another great food tour and adventure with you Mark, love it.
Shout out to the Master Chef! He did his thang! I need an invite next go round. Everything looked absolutely mouthwatering delicious. I am so happy for the ones who got to partake in the festivities.
I love all these back to back South Carolina Episodes!!
Mark, I want to say thank you for putting spotlight on South Carolina for some of its great food and southern cuisines. Because we are small state we’re often times skipped and we have some of the best barbecues and foods out there so I want to say thank you very much.
Mark took his niche to a new level. You can be from anywhere and the man is genuinely lovable❤ we love you mark
Even tho I'm Australian and super happy mark came to Australia Happy 4th of july to all of you American viewers
That BBQ master dude is so blessed and rich in having lots of friends and family at his BBQ. Lucky man amazing! great job
Mark thank you for including the blessing over the food, many of us southerners are people of faith and we ask God's blessins before we eat. That food ought to come with a label, "when you eat this food please don't drive, because you will get very sleepy, and you'll be ready to take a good long Sunday nap!' LOL
Now... that's the South Carolina I know...good food and company!!!! Thanks Mark!!
This backyard bbq has taken my idea of Sunday dinner to the next level! Time to get to work. Impressive indeed!!
If a backyard barbeque ain't vibing like THIS, I don't even want it. After watching this video, I realize that we folks up North in big cities don't know NOTHING about no damn backyard barbeque. 😂😂😂😂

That was amazing, the guy cooking and hosting doesn’t mess around. He takes it to another level on a cookout.
I'm not a religious person, but I loved his prayer. Food comforts the soul. Its amazing what kind of difference a good meal can make to the mind. There's good BBQ across this country, but nobody takes it as seriously as the people of the South. This man has it right. I could follow him. (if I lived there)
Hahahaha. You will have to be religious to get to him Bro..
Kansas city has a dog in this fight.
Knowing Jesus is not religion it's a relationship with Almighty God. The One who created you. The One who loves you and knows you better than you know yourself. Jesus changed my life and there is no greater love than knowing the King of kings and Lord of lords. Please trust in the person of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for salvation. You thought the prayer was beautiful because God is drawing you in. He is speaking to you. And He loves you.
I'm not religious too, but I always have to thank God. Every meal is a damn gift. When you've been without food, you know how it feels!

Mark...a PERFECT 4th of July to celebrate, probably, the BEST BBQ segment you have ever featured. John and his family and friends are a wonderful example of backyard perfection....when you can cook like he and his wife do. What an AMAZING BBQ Grill he created....and imagine three hours of BBQ to cook the greatest food...including his Mac and Cheese and Hash! I have never seen hash before---never knew about it! Thank You! I believe John is blessed by God with his cooking perfection....and his nice prayer before everyone eats was simple and beautiful. I will be sharing this video with my friends and family...and be watching it today again. I am preparing a meal for the 4th ...and I daresay it won't be able to compare with John's....but watching this while i cook will be loads of Fun! Thanks, Mark! Happy 4th!
🔥🔥🔥
Awesome video! Hats off to Mr. John, his wife and helpers!
Do you hate this show does it suck
Southern food, too me is the best in the world. South Carolina is one of the top places to find that really good southern food. Everything looked wonderful. Can you choose a favorite dish out of all the dishes cooked at the cookout Mark? When I was a little girl, around 5 or 6, , mid 1950s, my family would go the fish camp on the river where the family cabins sat just up off the water. My Uncles would sit up all night cooking hash and some good drinking as they stated, for the next day's meal. Memories are the most blessed part of a life as one can look back and recall times long gone. This food looked so good Mark, the three top choices I'd pick for my plate would be, hash, collards, ribs, I missed the light bread to go with my hash but the cake was to die for to cover dessert.
I smiled and teared watching this video. My mom is Geechi from Chuck Town South Caka-Lacki (Charleston South Carolina 😅) and my memories of visiting and sometimes living there have taking me too a special place right now... (God Bless Each and everyone in this video & everyone in the Comments)🙏🏾✨️🙏🏼✨️🫡
Right now it's 9 o'clock in SC almost 90°. I been up since 6 this morning getting the food ready. Y'all enjoy your day and the holiday.
I still got some ribs smokin and I'm still smokin💪🏾
That food looked so good, John is amazing! I've been eating SC vinegar based bbq, mustard based sauce & hash & rice since I can remember. Thank you for highlighting my culture 💛
This is the best video he as ever made. The ultimate video. South Carolina I wish I could go there and literally experience this myself. Perfect. Congratulations. Such a heart warming society. Love it.
Now that's the type BBQs I was raised on. I'm not talking about just the food, the whole experience. I caught myself listening to the men in the background more than Mark. One of your best videos to date. Glad to see you in the Carolina's.
When Mark was born, he didn’t cry he said oh wow!
This!! 😂😂😂
What an experience to be chilling with the master right in the backyard! Love that he also watches Mark! (he's right, the Greece content was great 😅)
Great video love that souther hospitality love how they pray too greetings from Puerto Rico
Mark was having a good time eating my culture's cuisine "soul food".. Brings back nostalgia, I have not had hash since I was a little girl...my grandfather, his brothers and my uncles would be up all night roasting a pig for our celebration or family gathering for a big dinner..thank you Mark for the experience,,,and honoring the different cultures and food they live on, you have much respect...I heard one of the gentlemen in the background of the video say "He down to earth"...and that is honoring you, and accepting you to our culture.

My late nanny taught my a recipe of ‘Texas hash’.
She was handed it from some American friends and that would have been in the 1950’s.
It’s tomato based (this one), minced beef, 4 cans on peeled tomatoes, bell peppers, onions Tabasco sauce, salt pepper, garlic, cumin and for this one, add rice at the end and simmer until cooked and flavoured. Serve with fresh hot garlic bread.
Great winter meal.
Interesting may just try that one

Love the fact that he prayed. You can't stop the word of God. Wow, would love to have been there.. I'd like a tub fill of that stew to take a bath in!
Loved this and I am slowly discovering your whole back catalogue of videos. So eclectic and comprehensive. And you have such energy and passion. Thanks so much!
Personally, I think the hosts, vibe, and food of this video were all perfect representations/representatives of America for your international audience!
Mark this is how a backyard bbq is done. Great food, great people and everybody having a great time. My mother (RIP) was born and raised in Saint Matthews which is probably over an hour to Charleston depending on which direction you're coming from. I remember her father my grandfather would slaughter a hog once a year and my family making hash. Ours was more vinegar based. I wasn't a fan of it as a child but now that I'm all grown up maybe I might like it more. Also while you're in S.C. Mark ask about puddin' which is made with rice, spices and the chopped offals from the pig then stuffed in a casing and cooked like a sausage. I'm also not a fan of it but since you like trying exotic foods I think you might like it.
Hey! My wife is from Saint Matthews!!! She loves the hash, but not the puddin'. She also swears by the MUSTARD based sauce and barbecue.
That hash reminds me of something we call in Jacksonville/South GA "Brunswick Stew...." sort of a catch all bbq stew. And it is fantastic. Great video, man! Thanks again for showing southern style food off to the world! And compliments to chef John! The man can cook!
i have NEVER been more jealous lol now THAT is a cookout!! The prayer was awesome as well, Mark is going to come back around with a twist to his Vernacular. lol
