LAU ISLANDS, FIJI - We’re in the remote Lau Islands group in Fiji, only accessible by boat, and today we’re going to Vuaqava Island, where they are known for their coconut crabs!
First of all, thank you to my friend Andhy Blake for arranging my trip to Fiji: / andhy_blake and to Captain Cook Cruises (www.captaincookcruisesfiji.com/) for taking us on this once in a lifetime Fiji cruise.
We docked near the uninhabited Vuaqava Island, Lau Islands, Fiji, which is known for its natural beauty, incredible seas, and also for being an island full of coconut crabs! Coconut crabs are definitely unique, and they are a huge delicacy in Fiji and for the local population on the Lau Islands. They all mentioned that they coconut crabs are so tasty and so delicious that they don’t need any extra seasoning or cooking - all you have to do is boil them for about 10 - 15 minutes and eat. The crabs eat mostly a diet of coconut, so they have a sweet coconut taste to them, and the fat in the stomach (similar to the tomalley on other crabs), is like a natural coconut crab pudding with a complexity of flavor. It was an amazing experience to be with local Fijians on a remote island eating coconut crab.
Next up on this Fijian crab tour we visited another island - Totoya Island, Lau Islands, Fiji where we had the honor to cook and eat another Fijian food delicacy of land crabs, cooked in coconut milk. The crabs were boiled then fully deshelled, then mixed with onions and chiles, and lots of coconut milk, and re-filled back into their shells. They were boiled again until the coconut milk thickened into a creamy crab sauce. You eat them with a fresh squeeze of local lime and chili, and it’s something truly magically delicious.
What a day of Fijian food and the freshest crabs from the source!

300-plus Islands, one third inhabited.
This is the only channel I've subscribed over a decade ago that I watch every single video, religiously, and never disappoints me. Mark, it's amazing to follow this journey around the world with you, Ying and see Micah growing up as a humble, down to earth and sweet kid as he is. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing everything with us all! 🤗🤗🤗
Fiji looked so perfect, from the sea to the people and the seafood 👌🏾what topped it for me is seeing that crusaders top 👌🏾👌🏾Fiji is definitely on the bucket list
Bro you will find a smiling Fijian with a crusaders jersey in probably almost every village in Fiji.

This is probably one of my favourite foodie videos I've seen across all tubers. The people, the food, the beauty of the islands is wonderful. Simply, nature's wonders never looked so good.
The coconut 🥥 crab, looks like and sound and taste delicious and You and Micah looks like both of you enjoyed swimming, and Ying is taking videos of the adventures in Fiji. It's nice that your family shares with you on your journey. Thank also for sharing your videos.

I like how Micah tells the truth.
Mark: "The water is sooo clear, crisp. Sooo refreshing!!!"
Micah: "That's really cold!" Lolol.
Bula yes ,this is our winter now,hot outside but cold in the water but still very nice

Fiji is amazing, good people and a unique place on earth. Bula!!
These coconut crabs are huge and unique. The flesh must taste like coconut since they eat coconuts mostly. Amazing!!
What if they ate a bird and its bird fat instead 💀💀

Thanks Mark for taking us to the beautiful Fiji islands.
FINALLY!!! A place that relishes a crab that loves to eat delicious coconut! As a Trinbagonian🇹🇹 that enjoys ALL things "coconut", including a good "basin" of Crab & Callaloo, I really enjoyed watching this video. Many years ago, I learned about coconut crabs and right away I thought of making our local specialty (Crab & Callaloo) with this formidable creature.
This concoction, made of young taro leaves with okra, pumpkin and these coconut crabs, cooked down in fresh herbs and coconut milk…would sent me to the moon!!
Trinbagonians also enjoy “Blue Food”, which is simple root crops like taro, cassava, sweet potatoes, eddoes, green banana cooked in coconut milk or as an accompaniment to steamed fish or stewed or curried meat (wild or domesticated) WHOOOHOoooo!! 🥰
So thanks for taking us off the beaten track to showcase these exotic delicacies Mark….and even bigger Thanks to the hospitable folks on Vuaqava and Totoya islands. May your lifestyle and livelihood remain sustainable for many generations to come. Bless-UP!! 💙
Sounds delicious!!!
Actually coconut crabs eat fruits, birds or fishes, rarely do they eart coconut
Holy that's a really BIG Coconut Crab 😮
We have bigger ones.
I am loving visiting these islands with you and your family Mark, Andhy is a wonderful host. The people, the place is so peaceful and giving happy to share.
Your videos in these maritime islands bring closure to us who are from these islands but have settled in the urban centers due to work, education and other reasons. So happy to see my island covered in this segment (Totoya). Great videos!! Good stuff.
Fiji was second on my bucket list Hawaii was first but after your videos now Fiji 🇫🇯 is Definitely first on my list now. Thanks Mark for all you do to bring these different cultures to us.
Haha..yes right choice. These Isands are pure & not commercialized!!
Hawaii is just a beach holiday now. Commercialisation has taken away it soul.
Fiji > Hawaii hands down
Good grief what an experience mark and your son and wife is there with you truly precious moments to remember. Eating fresh food outside with the ocean breeze smelling the salt in the air. You can't get that in no 5 star restaurant lol

Dear Mark, I'm happy to tears to see you are you living life and bring us a piece of your adventures. God speed your charisma and the joy you bring to everyone you met. You are truly an amazing human being and a living legend.
I am 100% now that Fiji would be Mark and his family's no.1 choice for a tropical getaway.
I am loving this Fiji series Mark. Enjoying all of the episodes so far.
Fiji have reverence for their functions including mealtimes. I liked the way Mark followed suit at mealtime by sitting cross legged the way the hosts did and at other places functions. This reminds me of back in the days when growing up in the African village settings, we ate meals laid down on mats or any other floor covering. Girls would sit side saddle while the boys sat cross legged.
Most other indigenous cultures do have their own ways of reverence in addition to Fiji
I find it amazing how people around the globe who sit on the floor when eating have similar politeness. What you described is the same in Indonesia.
This guy is incredible with his channel, he travels, enjoys life, and makes money at the same time. RESPECT!
Lovely video Mark . Glad to see you enjoying our Fijian food and loving people of Fiji . God Bless you all.
