LAU ISLANDS, FIJI - We’re in extremely remote Fiji, in the Lau group of islands, also some of the most beautiful and unvisited islands in Fiji. We had the special opportunity to go into a number of island Fijian villages to learn about the culture and especially cook and eat the local food.
Thank you to my friend Andhy Blake for arranging my trip to Fiji: / andhy_blake and to Captain Cook Cruises (www.captaincookcruisesfiji.com/) for taking us on this once in a lifetime Fiji cruise to the remote Lau Islands - only accessible by boat.
1. Vanua Balavu Island, Lau Islands, Fiji
We arrived to our first island called Vanua Balavu. I love how Fiji is very traditional and when you arrive to a village they still have a protocol to respect the traditional land owners and ask the permission of the village Chief. To do so we brought kava with us to present to the Chief and once accepted we were able to be on the island and start filming. They prepared a dish called Vakasakera, moringa leaves with coconut milk, barracuda fish, and some local shellfish similar to abalone. After an amazing meal, we toured and swam around the Bay of Islands - spectacular!
2. Fulaga Island, Lau Islands, Fiji
We continued our cruise in Fiji to the Fulaga islands, sometimes regarded as the most beautiful islands in all of Fiji - maybe in the South Pacific. The island is famous for their local sea cockles, which looked quite a lot like huge blood cockles. They harvested them right out of the ocean then opened them up and marinated them with onions and lime juice and coconut milk. Freshest and most delicious cockles ever.
3. Kabara Island, Lau Islands, Fiji
Finally to continue this remote Fijian food tour we visited Kabara island where they prepared, along with Captain Cook Cruises, a Fijian lovo for 100 people! A lovo is the Fijian version of an underground hot rock oven which is common throughout Melanesia and Polynesia and in other cultures around the world. It was a fantastic process and the food was smoky and tender.

I am married to a Fijian , and we as a family meet Every Monday night for dinner. Last week the whole family sat and watched the first three of Mark’s videos on Fijian food. We all had a good laugh. And thoroughly enjoyed watching Mark and his family getting stuck into the food. And the biggest laugh for us in a positive manner, was just how much Mark loves his 🌶️!!!!
MARK IS SUPPER COOL WE LOVE HIM TOO
Possibly the friendliest people in the world! We took a child, who was hitchhiking back to his village, after a day in the field & the family welcomed us with kava. They invited us back, for a feast, in our honour, the next day. Then, they took us spear fishing & to a beach that they own. No white people had set foot on there, other than a movie cast, who filmed Blue Lagoon there. It was stunning! They taught Dad how to spear fish & climbed trees to collect coconuts for us. They treated us like Kings. They then had another feast in our honour. Honestly, it made the whole trip! Dad is a Doctor, so helped the local nurse to learn about HIV and she was so grateful. We ended up buying around $500 groceries for them to thank them. It was so lovely to see the kids trying biscuits for the first time. Such a special vacation. We kept in touch with them too.
The Fijian Islands are absolutely stunning. Their cuisine is a perfect representation of their own respective cultures and traditions.

Yes it’s definitely a big part of fijian culture, along with all the other pacific island nations. They are raised to serve their guests well and give them the best that you have.
4 episodes in 1 country. Vinaka vakalevu Mark Wiens, for showing Fiji to the world. When I grow up I want to be like you - Full Time Eater 😍

dream job "full time eater"🤣
Spent 3 months in 1998 on the island of yadua. We were the first non indigenous to live on the island as part of a baseline conservation project.
The Fijians for me are the most friendliest, genuine people I have ever met and I've travelled over 50 countries and lived in a few.
Thanks
why on earth do they need Bwana doing conservation? Should have given you the Capt'n Cook tx.
If jealousy could kill, I would have died a few times over in this episode! Thanks for sharing! 🥰
Me too...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Love Fijians. Down to earth, beautiful people. Love how they come together like a family.
Same vibes around the pacific in addition to Fiji
@@Samizouza yeah it is a Pacific culture
Mark this is an epic trip!!! You are promoting the islands of the pacific to all the followers that have been with you for a long time, including me!!!
I've never been to an island, but oh my these Fiji islands are most beautiful I've ever seen!
Where are you from?
Thank you
Good to see Lau Islands get on the spotlight....Its always been the Yasawa Islands and the Nadi outskirts....Some beaches in the Lau archipelago are so turquoise and are second to none.....
The Rewa Islands are waay better 😂🧐

Some of the nature shots in this episode are stunning... and there's a community feel to this place that's really endearing. Such a great place to feature, Mark! Glad you got to join in on that kava ceremony 🙂
My favorite part is him showing the beautiful beaches, lushly green islands, all-natural ingredients, & tropical lifestyles. He really hit it out the park with this one.
I truly enjoyed this episode of Fiji Island, beautiful beaches, and people . Awesome
For those of us who live away from our island home, your videos has been a blessing. Nostalgic seeing how my people enjoy the very little they have yet the abundance in enjoying each others company and what the vanua provides. Thanks Mark for this video.
The islands are paradise created by God and the native's are lucky I am from Goa India another Paradise so I can connect the islands
If I can afford to move to Fiji 🇫🇯, I will never hesitate to do it. This country is heaven on earth.
once you move threre and see the cost of living you might move back lol
Once you move there and see there medical coverage, you might move back lol
Once you move there and see the house affordability you might move back lol
@pgfromfiji is it that expensive?
@@Donnette_BistroLounge_owner it's not that expensive..Fijis a middle income country & to holiday or vacation is one thing but to live here is complete another since more Fijians are moving out of the country for greener pastures because of very small population in and very isolated country.
Fiji 🇫🇯is definitely on my bucket list. Going to The End of the Road to see the waves at Teahupo’s and my life will be complete. One day!!!!
Man i really need to make me some Fijian friends so i can get invited over for lavo. The islands are a beauty. And their cusine is😍.
Going to Fiji just made it to the top of my bucket list!
I think you mean "lovo" (earthly baked food) and not lavo (money), but yeah point taken. 😅
Hahahah come to fiji first , you'll be friends with almost anyone you meet from the airport to wherever you go 💁🏼♀️ that's the Bula way
@@roseubitau2090Are you from Fiji,cause i also feel like i need a friend from there.😅
Love your coordination with Hawaiian outfit. What amazes me is Mark is not afraid to explore, try and eat all kinds of food or anything from different cultures even the most "weird & scary" one. He really connects and immerses himself totally to the culture that he is in with high respect to the people's culture. That's perfect for the title of his channel, Food Travel. 🥰
That's a Bula Shirt
Fiji has its own bula shirt which he is wearing
This was Spectacular, absolutely amazing what a wonderful gift to be able to try foods from all over the world, thank you, Mark and family.

Thanks for showcasing our beautiful country Mark! Your beautiful family is so respectful of the people and the culture. ♥️

I truly appreciate how they’ve preserved their cultural traditions throughout time. Much respect to Mark for his respectability as well. Simplicity is key to a long life!
Heaven On Earth .
Alot of people go on holidays for the sights ,beach ,sea & sun . But Fiji is the people . The most friendliest you'd find in this earth ...
If somebody wasn't already convinced Mark Wiens is the real deal, I came across this video and was surprised I'd been to a place before Mark. I know Mark probably speak 4 or 5 languages already, but he knew some of the key phrases I had to learn in Fiji. I said, "Vinaca!" and I started laughing. He did his homework, learned some phrases, knows the culture issues, and just a super detailed dude. You're a model RUclipsr Mr. Wiens!!! (and me? I added 35 countries to my list 2020-2022 including a couple of places you suggested....you rock dude!)
I've always wanted Mark to visit Fiji since I stumbled upon his videos back in 2017. And now I find this! Vinaka vakalevu Mark! 🙏🏽
Mark is so talented that the video brings so much value for anyone to enjoy. He captured the best part of Fiji and the cooking processes for local dishes. It’s insane not to give it a thumbs up. I had so much joy watching the film.
God has blessed these islands with beauty & abundance in food, so fresh & healthy for mankind. Watching from the UK.
Fiji is so beautiful, Mark you're the first to show this to the world. Born and brought up in Fiji but I haven't seen the islands like you did. Thank you so much.
Wow. Never knew that Fiji was this beautiful. Amazing.
It sure is beatifull
I’ve been to Fiji, and if you haven’t had the pleasure to visit you must put Fiji on your bucket list. The friendliest people you will ever meet. My favorite resort is Nukabati. The owner Jenny is so wonderful, she cares about guest as well as her employees.
you know that feeling when you're really happy that this place is being featured but at the same time being afraid for the people of fiji when it will be discovered by so many people. To the future tourists of fiji please respect them all. Leave them in peace
Love that you came to the Pacific, pretty much all the islands like Tonga and Samoa have different variations of all the dishes the Fijians have well represented on. Thank you Mark, and thank you our brothers and sisters in Viti!
I also like to mention that the Lau Island group and it’s natives have close ties to us Tongans, especially in traditions and dance.
You Tongans always have to make everything about yourselves aye 🙄🤣
@@kOt985 Let me guess. Bet a million bucks your Samoan aye..so arrogant..
Tongan and Samoan lovo is not really appetizing 😂😂
As indigenous Fijian from main island called viti levu. Lau island is the people of fiji that connects everyone through Melanesian and Polynesian.

The majestic skies, beautiful emerald green landscape, soft white sandy beaches, & turquoise clear blue water was a astronomical virtual treat. Mark you seem to keep amazing me every week with such absolute phenomenal content but this one hit home. Omgoodness!! This is now one of my favorite uploads you presented. The 🌶fresh chilies, herbs, limes, coconut milk/ juice, fish, & chicken all-natural from the land you stand on is such enrichment to the body and soul. I had to play it back a few times to fully take in every aspect of this trip. Thanks Mark so very much for your marvelous work bringing us epic content each week consistently.🌺 "May you & your family always stay safe and blessed. Cheers!" 🐟🍹🏝
Been watching every episode of Fijian food tour, but must say this is the best.
My gosh !
I could live in Fiji just for the absolutely breathtakingly stunning beaches 🤩👌
Here in South Africa we call the moringa "Drumstick Herbs" and it's a mission to clean the tiny leaves off the stems so the easiest way is to wrap the stems in newspaper and the leaves fall off automatically. Apparently, you must only cook a certain quantity of the herbs or else the meal will be too bitter
bula from Fiji
the bitterness is removed when the ladies squeezed it in water after boiling it....
Yasssss Bulla! Love how respectful Mark is to each and every culture he meets along his travels! Such a huge fan
Thank you Mark Wiens for advertising my Island home to the world. You’ve made me appreciate our traditional foods even more. Vinaka
Love the look of this place. No concrete roads! No tarmac! Amazing :D
Oh my God!!! This is very beautiful. Fiji is on my travel wishlists because of you mark. The view, the water and the cleanness is astonishing. I can sleep on that water. It is so peaceful, I mean I don't have any word to explain my excitement at this moment. I am in love already.

I love the way Mark goes off the beaten track. Also my eyes lit up in this episode as I have explored some of Fiji and Vanuabalavu is one of the islands I went to back in 2003 and so so happy to see this beautiful place again and reminded me of what a verdant paradise it is.
Never thought Fiji would be as beautiful as this. I kept hearing the Country but upon seeing your vlog I am amazed. With full of cultures and rich of natural resources. This country is will be one of my Bucket List. Great Vlog @Mark Wiens!
This is why I like your channel. You go to truly unseen places. Most other food youtubers do the usual fancy restaurants

So beautiful Fiji is such beautiful country people are so nice.
I was lucky enough to travel to Fiji twenty two years ago and the pork lovo was the best pork I have ever tasted in my life.
Now we’re talking 😂
I went to my village in Fiji some time back with a few friends, went hunting for wild boar 🐗 in the forest, butchered it and we all decided to experiment with some pork lovo on our own. Garlic, ginger, chillies and soy sauce. The most tender and juicy pork I've tasted.

I love Fiji, I've been there twice and it is such a beautiful place. I'm glad that your enjoying your time there.
The Fiji Islands was a wonderful and blessed experience. Thank you doing the trip , and I hope it was as fun and enjoyable as it looked. It is an amazing paradise.
I really admire and appreciate the most very important part of this vlog. Proper protocol. Protocol is very, very important and always practiced throughout Polynesia and in other indigenous cultures, such as Fiji. In my Hawaiian culture, we also use ʻawa during ceremonies, and we chant and sing as well, before and after an event.
I'm so proud of you for showing and sharing.
Aloha from Hawaiʻi. 🤙🏾

Thank you for taking us on your vacation to the Fiji. I have wondered for years of the food of that island. Everything looked amazing and the water was so clear.
Its funny watching Mark eat and try to describe Polynesian food! It is not full of spices like Asian food, some people even call it bland, but it is very nutritious and fresh, very rich and savory! If you like coconut cream and seafood, the Polynesian food is for you! Mark should try Samoan Palusami!
Wow what a feast 😮 would love to try Fijian Food
Thank you, Mark, for showing the world 🌎 what fiji is all about..
This has to be my most favorite upload from Mark Wiens yet! 🌴
I did every kava sesssion I could for 8 or 9 days when I was there.....then I went to one of these small villages you need permission...and they either gave me some extra-good kava...or it had built up in my system. I walked back to the boat seeing things greener than they had been several hours earlier....sounds a little more clear.....my with an extra smiley face! I'm staring at the full size kava bowl I brought back with me including cowry shells and coconut braid.
I love mark Wein’s facial expressions every time he tastes food every where he goes
