RIP Olivia Hussey. Too young gone, sadly remembered. The movie has a ever lasting memory on me; the cast, the setting, the music by Nino Rota... this is truly a sad day.
Upon this May's fair stage, I mark the turning of seventy years in my life's grand play. Forty-five years hence, I chanced upon my Juliet, whose beauty and grace doth rival the very stars in their celestial dance. As the sands of time flow through the hourglass, my love for her doth but grow, her charm and desirability blossoming like the sweetest rose in the garden of my affections.
Rip Olivia Hussey 🕊️, this film was the most beautiful depiction of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (in my opinion). I really appreciate the dedication of the director and cast for staying true to the story and poetry at the time. ❤️
I saw this while alone in a theatre in 1968-69 when I was a coming of age very confused 13-year-old boy. I couldn't believe I cried during a movie and I was simply in love with this picture and the characters. Even now at 61 I have never forgotten it or this music.
Personally I like the 1996 version because that is the one I saw first and I grew up with that version but the 1968 version is so good and is so beautifully shot and this song just represents the beauty and tragedy of the story and the movie.
I prefer adaptations to be set at the time they were written as, therefore I prefer this version to 1996. I prefer Jane Austen adaptations to be set in the Georgian/Regency era to the modern age and so on with any classic work. I don't see the point in having it in modern day. Why does it being set in the past mean people can't relate to it? I just don't understand it.
She's beautiful for the age she is now, just as she was beautiful at the age she was then. Getting older doesn't mean getting ugly. Sad reading some of the comments here. Like, how DARE she age like all of us will huh?

This Romeo and Juliet is the most beautiful and romantic version there will ever be. I saw it in 1968 and never forgot. had it on video for many years. Let's also pay tribute to Franco Zeffirelli, who was a genius director and Nino Rota who wrote the haunting theme that will stay with you forever.

My favorite version of Romeo and Juliet...every frame looks like a Renaissance painting come to life, and the music is just heartbreaking. So glad my high school English class used this version instead of the more modern ones.
This film is the most beautiful movie I've ever watched. All the actors were perfect. The lines were amazingly poetic and they retained the special feelings Shakespeare wrote into the original play. Not to mention, the music is touching and fantastic. A true work of art.

My sister and I were discussing this movie recently and we discovered we both had been called on to read the part of Juliet..twice during our high school days. You see things through a different lense and appreciate memories like this when you get older..and you learn something new everyday, right. I love the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet. And the music, the costumes are lovely.
The look they give each other is so genuine. Really, I mean THAT'S the look. 😉. Sends a chill up my spine every time. And a little bit of hope that just maybe. MAYBE? I'LL SEE THAT LOOK JUST ONE MORE TIME BEFORE I GO.
This is THE BEST Romeo and Juliet ever! The Romeo is gorgeous the Juliet's beautiful!I think William Shakespeare would've wanted it just like this...and this song & music is an added bonus to the film as well!
The music was adapted from period music of the time and played on period instruments. The costumes were spot on. And the actors were absolutely perfect. I always appreciated that he used age-appropriate actors for the main characters. Definitely the best version of this classic love story. In my opinion, modern versions set in modern times just do not do justice to Shakespeare!
I'm pleased to see these positive comments. I've had students who only liked the 90's version. They said the 1968 version was boring. I jsut didn't understand their viewpoint.

It entirely it depends on if someone is willing to take Romeo and Juliet seriously in the first place. The 90’s version is self-aware in its parody, so someone who is prone to making fun of Romeo and Juliet would prefer its spin on the story and would find it more entertaining.
I saw this movie in 1968 as an 11 year old , and thought it was the greatest movie I had ever seen ! This movie is so great, one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie was released over 50 years ago and it still is so great. Reminds me of so many memories, especially when I listen to this song.

Zeffirelli chose Olivia Hussey out of 500 auditioning girls. I think her exotic look (she's half Argentinian, half English) might have given her an advantage). She was the perfect Juliet in every way.
We watched this movie as part of our Schooling at high school in the early 70s in NewZealand, simply stunning and 50 years later still moves me to tears.
I watched this this year, my first year in high school. This movie has got to be the best love story of all times and one of my favorite movies of all time. I have never really felt so much pain while reading a story, and the song didn't help at all. Especially since Juliet is absolutely stunning in this. This is way better than the Leo version I think. I hated that one.
@@plusfour1 You mistook my intentions, I was simply saying that the "Leo version" of Romeo and Juliet is shot and scripted in a more comedic fashion than its older counterpart (aka the 1968 movie). Nowhere did I say that young love was funny (though I do believe that it is often quite ridiculous, and I agree that Shakespeare did intend to portray that in Romeo and Juliet). Hopefully that cleared up any misconceptions about what I meant.
Totally timeless, when you have high school girls who think Romeo is cute or boys who love the sword fighting then you know the movie and story has stood the test of time.
We watched this movies this year, my freshman year. Me and my friend Jacky couldn't stop staying how cute Romeo and Tybalt was. This is how I met my (ex)boyfriend. He was joking around calling himself Tybalt. He heard me say Tybalt was hot when talking to Jacky. He was like "So, you think I'm hot" I said yeah and we got to know each other and eventually started dating, then broke up because of his ex, also named Katelyn
@@dewinmoonl So funny that you mentioned this! I saw this when it came out in 1968 with my Jr High school class. That's all the girls could talk about (I think they were jealous) and also Len Whiting being so cute. It's good to know the many reactions to this film are universal and timeless.
A beautiful melody that indeed exudes a touch of the Renaissance, very well composed. What a bittersweet memento mori. Everything is transient and even the most beautiful flower wilts eventually.

This version is so believable and beautiful as were Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting. Such a classic.
Just think, if Romeo had waited 60 more seconds to drink that poison, he and Juliet would’ve lived happily ever after in some town far, far away.
stop😔💔
The misunderstanding that she was only sleeping, so sad
Or not
Went on a field trip with my English class back in 78, and we were all amazed by this sad love story. Still one of my favorite films
Heard it first in freshman year of highschool in English class when we watched this movie, now I'm 24, and more than decade later I still hum this song every day its so beautiful. I'll never forget the first time I heard it, after the movie was over I was desperately trying to pay attention to the credits to see the composers name.
Zeffirelli's brilliant masterpiece is a faithful adaptation of Shakespeare which remains timeless - fresh and sweet even after many years. This song is incredibly beautiful and never fails to touch my heart.
2 Oscar, 3 Golden Globe, 1 BAFTA , 5 Ezüst Szalag , és 1 David di Donatello díj, azért nem semmi teljesítmény... ez a legnépszerűbb filmes feldolgozása a tragédiának
Agree absolutely!
The ultimate and supreme movie interpretation of this timeless love story!
2020 anyone ?? Olivia Hussey is so pretty. Probably most beautiful in world.
The most beautiful film i’ve ever seen. On top of that, Olivia Hussey is so fascinating.
She was the perfect Juliet in every way.
watched it at school for the past few weeks. by far the best.
The singer sings this song to perfection.
He did, it was perfect.
So much feeling in his lovely voice.
LOVE THIS FILM..LOVE THE EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC AND THE GREAT PERFORMANCE OF LEONARD WHITING AND OLIVIA HUSSEY!!!
We watched this movie as part of our Schooling at high school in the early 70s in NewZealand, simply stunning and 50 years later still moves me to tears.
Best romeo and juliet… cant stop listening
I watched this this year, my first year in high school. This movie has got to be the best love story of all times and one of my favorite movies of all time. I have never really felt so much pain while reading a story, and the song didn't help at all. Especially since Juliet is absolutely stunning in this. This is way better than the Leo version I think. I hated that one.
But there's a Leo in this one too lol :)
The Leo version is actually pretty good. I just think people were thrown off by its "modern" and comedic style.
@@tesscrelli783 How is young love funny? My experience was terrifying. I think Shakespeare captured that much.
It’s less a love story and a warning tale of impulsive behaviors. They are blinded by passion and bad decision making, that’s why they fail.
This is the truly great film version. Amazing performances, stunning locations and one of the greatest film scores of all time.
Best Romeo And Juliette ever
Beautiful. Cried so much at the end! Olivia Hussey was so beautiful!
RIP OLIVIA THIS HITS HARD!😢😢😢😢
A masterpiece from Zeffirelli. Beyond perfection!
Katelyn Jones Lol. Hot story. I have this movie on VHS. Remember VHS? Lol. Anyway SELENA brought me here. The TEJANO star.😀
Sarah Stewart I miss Selena....
not to mention Juliet's HUGE TITS
ahem . . . ( I guess that's what we all were talking about when we talked about it ~_~ )
@@dewinmoonl So funny that you mentioned this! I saw this when it came out in 1968 with my Jr High school class. That's all the girls could talk about (I think they were jealous) and also Len Whiting being so cute. It's good to know the many reactions to this film are universal and timeless.
absolute masterpiece, the story and the film. heartbreaking, yet truly beautiful
A beautiful melody that indeed exudes a touch of the Renaissance, very well composed.
What a bittersweet memento mori. Everything is transient and even the most beautiful flower wilts eventually.
In my opinion this is the definitive film adaptation of the play
