1968 Roméo & Juliet Moresca & What Is A Youth

  • Preceded by a dance, the ballad "WHAT IS A YOUTH" comes from the film "Romeo & Juliet" by Franco Zeffirelli [1968]. This is the filmed version I prefer of Shakespeare's play. The two actors are gracefully fresh: Olivia Hussey (as Juliet) is in her spring and Leonard Whiting (as Romeo) too, Olivia almost out of time.
The tune "What is a Youth" was composed by Nino Rota for Eugene Walter lyrics. The song was sung by Glen Weston.
After morisca danced on some medieval dance tunes, the ballad "What Is A Youth" is in a "neo-troubadour" style: a cry of love in minor scale, a scene with few lyrics. The song sums up the whole drama: the inescapable attraction of the two young kids. How an impetuous fire hugs Juliet and Romeo, how it draws them to each other and leads them to death. The words of love are sweeter than honey but whose cry, in the end is bitterly sad. Their love disturbs too much the rules of the family clans in Verona.
The popularity of the song will not wane; it will be brilliantly sung by Ukrainian singer Konstantin Udovenko. glv
What is a youth? Impetuous fire
What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on.
A rose will bloom It then will fade
So does a youth So does the fairest maid.
Comes a time when one sweet smile
Has its season for a while
Then Love's in love with me.
Some may think only to marry
    Others will tease and tarry
Mine is the very best parry
    Cupid he rules us all,
Caper the caper; sing me the song
Death will come soon to hush us along
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall
Love is a task and it never will pall
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall
    Cupid he rules us all.
A rose will bloom, it then will fade
    So does a youth
    So does the fairest maid.

In modern day Romeo and Juliet, it'd be some drunk skank that already had two abortions half naked twerking on random dudes while the music was some tribal beats liberally adorned with lots of n-word and braggadocios lyrics. Africanization has created such cultural enrichment!

Juliet's father knew how to throw a respectable social event. It's the only party where
trespass can be sweetly urged! Innocence today is a lost commodity! The viewer is drawn
to the fashion, and cultural respect of one another. Some feel they belong back in this era.
It's something one can relate to as well. I know I do. The world was less puzzling, but still,
life was complicated just the same back then as it is today.

Zeffirelli's lush backgrounds and medieval colors, Shakespeare's words like music, Juliet's boobs pushed up to overflowing, her husky voice, Romeo's face full of longing, Tybalt's rage and anger causing likeable Mercutio's death, the crassness of the nurse, the kindness of the friar, the bullying father trying to marry off his daughter to the wrong guy, the ultimate tragedy of the two warring families who could not reconcile till they both lost their fairest child. It was so full of drama and color and terrifying end to that beautiful love story. No one could have done it better than Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. A magnificent movie that will never die.

punished for a while. "See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that Heaven finds means
to kill your joys with love," implicating God in the determination of their fates. Leave it to
Christians to read Thou Shalt Not Kill and conclude Thou Shalt Not Die Until I Say So.
Romeo and Juliet died of grief, and Tybalt died of Romeo's grief at Mercutio's death.
Mercutio died of Tybalt's rage, which Mercutio and Romeo gave him.
As long as I'm already a confessed editor I'll mind us of Mercutio's soliloquy, how easily the
scorn of morbidly excessive ritual begets the wounding of protectorates, who have not any
primacy of first arrival, nor the expertise of ritual to recommend them.
