I love this film. Leonard Whitting and Olivia Hussey are the best Romeo and Juliet of all time. This film came out two years before i was born. Love from the UK. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My first crush I was 15 I will miss her ❤ This scene I memorized word for word in 1968 after seeing movie 4 times and bought the soundtrack May her memory be Eternal 🙏✝️
Olivia, an angel born in Buenos Aires, her films will never die in the world of art. RIP Descansa en Paz, hermosa Olivia desde Buenos Aires, Argentina. You deserve a street!
I was 14 , my freshman year in high school when the film was playing in my town's movie theater in 1969 (back when a town had one movie theater showing one movie at a time). I saw Romeo And Juliet alone in a quiet weeknight showing. I have never forgotten this film, the cast, Zefferelli, etc. I'm just learning that Olivia has died very recently. I didn't know she had breast cancer, her cancer reoccurring. She had to have suffered. But no more suffering.
I was a 12yo girl in NOLA. I fell in love. Incomparable! Gorgeous costumes, music, acting, sets, direction! I became interested in Shakespeare after this movie.
A masterpiece of supreme magnificence: Zeffirelli's amazing depiction of the quintessential troubadour whose song beautifully captures R & J's love at first sight ❤
Adieu, Our sweet Olivia-Juliet! Adieu, A rose will bloom, than will fade, so does youth, so does the fairest maid!!!! Your youth is forever inmortalied as OUR JULET! RIP SWEET MAID! 12-27.25
Great acting, direction and editing. I believe--however--there are modern violins visible, which did not exist at that time. Only their great-grandparents the viols would have been visible. Damn good movie, though.
Amei este filme. Eu tinha 10 anos.
“When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” ― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Descanse em paz . Você sempre foi linda . Na minha adolescência assisti o filme Romeu e Julieta. Que romance lindo! Nunca vou esquecer. 😢
When he grabs her hand though...the way the man looks at her...in that circumstance...props to the filmaker and director for that. I'd be like ummhmm...sweet lil maiden just became a woman...enjoying this song a lil bit more than the rest of us. I used to watch this scene over and over as a youth and oftimes imagine I was a random reveler at the party... also trying to find me a date. Tibalt and The prince tried ot rig the system to get Juliet but Romeo caught her in the moment of truth. My mistake would have been to try to catch a dialogue with her at the punch bowl but then get spotted by her later as I work the room. I'd never understand why she lost interest and have to yet again go quietly into the night as most of the gals at such a party would've already been rigged into the system or indeed spoken for.
Tubal is Juliet’s first cousin. He’s not a love interest. The Prince appears three times as a dispenser of justice. He’s not a love interest. Count Paris (County Paris) does want to marry Juliet and her father arranges a match. Maybe watch the movie or read the play again.
@@j.j.9123 I did mean to say Count Paris not the Prince when I referred to her other "suitors" attempting to rig the system. As for Tybalt, historically he has no love clear love interest but in my perspective the film does imply a nascent love interest between Tybalt and Juliet. That they are first cousins would have been of zero consequence anywhere in the antiquated world and throughout most of even the modern world. Juliet's parents acknowledged her strong feelings for Tybalt posthumously although they clearly had no concern for it or even her own protests against the prospect of marrying her to Count Paris. This disregard for any feelings she might have for anyone would have been more than normal for their characters and any of their class and station, as was definitely demonstrated. My point is that despite not being likely to wed(because of her father and the count's ambitions NOT because they were cousins) and certainly not fornicate with her(which would dishonor everyone) they were definitely available as "love" interests to each other. In the film Tybalt's rage at Romeo already seething by the intrusion into the ball reaches its climax as he realizes Romeo and Juliet have actually kissed. So yes we could still characterize the depiction of Tybalt's vengeance as only a result of the intrusion of his enemies into the feast, I chose to regard it as something a bit more as the filmaker makes a clear effort to show his reaction toward Juliet caressing her own lips. Further evidence to support MY analysis is: why also does he not pursue the other interlopers with the same zeal as Romeo. I believe the filmaker decided to add jealousy to Tybalt's already mounting rage and indignation, and it would have been perfectly rational to expect fondness for his budding cousin for the character in that setting even if she was not nearly his favorite crush.
Also I am being facetious when I characterize their efforts as "rigging" the system. In those eras betrothal by arrangement with relatives would have been the actual legitimate way to enter a marriage, what Romeo and Juliet did would actually have been the underhanded way. Unlike modern "Western" dating conventions, ignoring or undermining the wishes of the parents, particularly the patriarch in whose care Juliet existed (her father) would have been almost if not actually criminal. Perhaps I should explain that while the counts intentions to rig the system is obvious, I am also playfully characterizing Tybalt as using his proximity to her household and growing prestige in the city to "rig the system" by openly fending off the one suitor he can duly confront with violence, Romeo. Whether he was truly interested in winning her hand by one upping the count in defending hers and his own house's honor through dueling and killing Romeo hardly would matter, he would yet gain prestige either way. If he DID want to intervene and win her hand though, killing Romeo in her honor, would be a much better way to do it than confronting both his Uncle and the count with his objections directly. Accept it or not, my interpretation certainly gives Tybalt more guile and adds depth to his antagonism.
@@j.j.9123 As stated in some of my other comments I have seen the movie countless times I have never read the play and perhaps never will. Find yourself.
@tco, you assume by your comments that I don’t know any of the background you provided. Actually I know that and more. I have also read the play numerous times. It’s too bad you admit you’ve never bothered. This movie is a masterpiece and part of appreciating it and discussing it with others is discussing the choices the director made when cutting Shakespeare’s original script. Tybalt is part of Juliet’s great merchant family. Romeo belongs to their historic great rival and enemy’s family. Tybalt seeks to protect Juliet whom he thinks may be toyed with or taken advantage by his enemy. It wouldn’t be much different in a modern mafia family. But I’m not interested in discussing this movie further with someone who cares so little for the play that so inspired the genius who fired it, that you’ve never bothered to read it and don’t even know how it was adapted.
