I took my high school sweetheart to this movie in our small Missouri town theatre. I can still remember how she squeezed my hand during this song. She was my first love, and it was a wonderful date. We both went to the University of Missouri. It was a magical time. Unfortunately, during our junior year, she fell in love with another boy. I was devastated. They were moving fast. They were engaged by Christmas and scheduled a wedding the following summer. Seeing them together on campus was always so painful. I was attending Missouri during that summer of her wedding. On the morning of her wedding, my Mom calls me at Missouri to inform me that her fiancée called off the wedding the previous weekend. For a moment, I was ecstatic. I thought, "I still have a chance." But then, I realized how ridiculous that was. We had both moved on. Two years later, I'm visiting my family back in Missouri for Christmas. She calls me. Just to say hello. Not wanting to continue the conversation, I go to hang up. As I'm saying goodbye, she asks me to accompany her to Midnight Mass. I'm shocked and go quiet. She asks again. Then again. Finally, against my better judgment, I said, 'Yes.' When I pick her up at her parent's house, she's more beautiful than ever. When I see her beautiful smile, I realize that I might still be in love with her. Two years later, we were married. Fourty two years together. One fantastic son. During her last of cancer, she started telling people that we've been together since high school. I never corrected her. I didn't know if she was telling a small white lie or if it was the cancer in her brain. It really didn't matter. Lost her 2019. Every time I hear this song, I remember the date when she held my hand so tight.
Your true story is more beautiful than Romeo and Juliet. So grateful that you had a wonderful life together. Yes, the heartache of losing your perfect lover is so so so sad, but you had many years of joy. I hope you can find peace.
I saw this movie in the 60's when I was young. Now I am 65 but the song still stirs the same strong emotions. Love never grows old and it is in the heart of the person who loves
My sentiments exactly. Aged 14, our Eng Lit class was taken to the local cinema to help us with our study of Romeo and Juliet. The girls all fell in love with Leonard Whiting, and the boys with Olivia Hussey. I don’t know about the others but I for one still holds a flame for this most beautiful of women, 50 years on!
I agree. During my childhood, the theme song and the beauty of the actors/actresses touch my heart, too. The emotions remain as pure and strong as ever.
Olivia only 16 and Leonard only 17, yet their performances were pure exquisite perfection. At 54 I'm still *shocked* at how these *two beautiful angelic teen actors* were able to speak & immerse themselves in shakespeare's intricate dialogue while conveying all that great depth of feeling to completely bring Romeo & Juliet to real life. This film *truly stands entirely apart* as an amazing unique cinematic achievement.
Wow that is crazy. They were teenagers yet they pulled off Shakespeare. Not only that but one of the most beautiful yet tragic love stories of all time. In my opinion no other version of Romeo and Juliet can even come close to this one.
Olivia Hussey is probably the most beautiful actress ever. Leonard Whiting is incredibly handsome, too. They're the most stunning couple in the history of cinema.
I am 69 and Romeo and Juliet played at a theater that our class went to and I was in tears and greatly moved by the movie. Still remember and love the music

What a classic song and a classic film! It's a time for good when we believe in true and eternal love! Yes, listening to it in July 2021 during the rampant Covid-19 in Taiwan!
The director chose the perfect actors for Romeo and Juliet. Olivia’s and Leonard’s youth and beauty encapsulated the very essence of Romeo and Juliet, as if they were born for this part. This is the best version of Romeo and Juliet.
Who is here in 2021? I was brought here by Barratt Waugh’s captivating rendition which I stumbled on in Spo-ti-fy. I’d barely started school when this movie came out but it speaks to the enduring (and endearing) memory of this movie that well into my early teens, the names of Whiting, Hussey, their youth and this song were still on airwaves and quite a few conversations. It was the Titanic of its day. I never liked the song back then, finding it too sad and foreboding. Yesterday, 53 years after the movie debuted, I stumbled on Barratt’s cover as I curated my playlists. My god, how he totally nailed it in a way that not even Andy Williams, the original singer, ever did (if Williams did, I would have liked it way back when). That wonderful vibrato. This young man totally owned the song. Now, I have finally come to cherish this song!
Robert, I'm a little behind you, but my mind & heart are still young and I'm wise enough not to dismiss the power of love! :) I included this video on an eclectic playlist filled with classics & hidden gems, past & present, all styles & era's. I literally saw this movie 13 times in the theater, when tickets were .50 a pop. Then I bought the LP and listened to it for hours. 13 year old girls feel deeply. 😊
I'm 76. I met the Love of My Life in 1965. We separated twice. We both had some growing in understanding to do, especially me, and now we will never part. When it's meant to be, you will be together again, even if you part for a while. When you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they are yours. 💕💕💕💕
Thank you! 🙏🏻💕 Yes, strong love is not forgotten! "There is no sadder story in the world" (based on Shakespeare's tragedy) "... love is as strong as death;...her arrows are arrows of fire; she is a very strong flame. Great waters cannot extinguish love, and rivers will not flood it..." (from the Bible, Song of Songs, ch. 8:6, 7)📖🤔. They say there is no sadder story in the world, Than Shakespeare - about Romeo and Juliet. But there is one story, Which also saddens me. And in it the separation is great - There are whole centuries between us. And its end is not clear - Whether there will be a meeting of our hearts. No, I'm not Juliet. And not Romeo is my lover, But for me there is no More beautiful than the plot, Than the love of this covenant. Not seeing my "Romeo" ever, I've already given him my heart. And with all my instincts I think about him all the time, That he not only shines with intelligence, But sincere and modest, And a man pleasing to God. And also, kind and gentle in his feelings, And there should be a romantic touch in it. And he is not deprived of humor - he is enlivened by a funny joke. And the spirit is so dear, To make him feel good with me. And I would like to hear his voice, See his eyes and make sure, that he needs me. Then I would have followed him to the end of the world! Juliet said the same thing. And I'm ready to love him eternity, By giving him your soul infinity! But alas, far from it And my dream will not come true in any way. And the reason is simple: he is not on earth and will not be ... EVER! Yes, a little, but happiness It was at Juliet's And even their marriage vows are sealed. I will never have a moment , Just to look in Into dear eyes and say: I love you... Well, there are sadder stories in the world, What about Romeo and Juliet. After all, to live and love without hope is more painful - And this is worse than all deaths! 😔 --------- P. S. But I have hope That I will be happy too. My God - Jehovah will not leave Me without blessings never!!! (if you want: see the Bible for reflection: Proverbs, ch. 10:22; and 1 Corinthians, ch. 2:9,10; and Matthew, ch. 6:6, 33; and go to the official website of jw. org)📖🤔.
My goodness Olivia Hussey was just mesmerizing as Juliet. What innocence and beauty she displayed in this tragic play. And Leonard Whiting with his beautiful and passionate eyes shown bright As Romeo. Brilliant!
+Mr54nomore Yes, I was in love with Olivia Hussey in this movie. Our high school English class got extra credit for going to see this movie when it came out---best extra credit I ever got!
It was such a loss when the film director (Franco Zeffirelli) died this year. The world will never forget him, he was so talented, and Romeo and Juliet is the proof of his genius.
There comes but one true gem in one's lifetime. This tale shall be told many times, but none shall capture the raw emotions as this one, by these actors, at that time, brought together in time, like no other. Olivia is Juliette... This is the definitive cast and once in a lifetime enactment of the Bard's classic.
63 yrs young. One of all time favorite songs from my teenage days. Timeless Spirit. Ageless Body. A classic / iconic piece lives on .... So It is. So Be It. ❤️❤️
Absolutely astonishing! I saw this film when it was first released in 1968. Only Zefferelli has been able to truly capture and express the innocent wonder of the eternal forbidden passion of two young lovers, penned by the Bard so long ago. For those fortunate of us to have experienced such a love, this film takes us back to those sweet moments, and for those who have not, it brings forth bitter tears for what was longed for but never found. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were born for these roles - roles which all of us wish we were blessed to have lived. It still makes me weep when I watch it.
I was of the same opinion. When the new version came out I cursed it vehemently and told my teen daughters it was blasphemy! I agreed to try and took them to the Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood just mock and scorn the new version. We were the first, loudest and most tearful group of girls in the bathroom crying our faces off. So, checked. An age-old story that crushes any pre-conceived ideals. Still beautiful, still my favorite
I had my first romance at 11years old. I recall that first kiss we shared as a couple and it brings tears to my eyes...the innocence and joy of a youthful romance.
Watching, September 11, 2019. Feeling so much like back in that time of our lives during the 60's. GREAT YEAR! A classic love story movie of a lifetime immortalizing young Leonard and Olivia's beautiful love pair. THANK YOU to Franco Zefferelli for making this grand beautiful movie. I never get tired watching over and over again.j
I watched it when i was 16 in Germany 41 years ago ( TV ). Even as a young man, i was in love with the movie, the song and the story……and of course Olivia Hussey ❤️ This is the best Romeo and Juliette adaptation ever ❤️
I saw this film when I was 15 y.o., now I'm 71 y.o. I was in a cinema with the girl I loved so much, with all my heart. She was dead when she was still too young. But the love lives still. She looked like Juliet of this ever beautiful film. Stay in peace, Marzia.

Truly a masterpiece. Every time I hear this, I feel a feeling that cannot be described in words. I really love that feeling ♥️♥️♥️

"There is no sadder story in the world"
(based on Shakespeare's tragedy)
"... love is as strong as death;...her arrows are arrows of fire; she is a very strong flame. Great waters cannot extinguish love, and rivers will not flood it..." (from the Bible, Song of Songs, ch. 8:6, 7)📖🤔.
They say there is no
sadder story in the world,
Than Shakespeare -
about Romeo and Juliet.
But there is one story,
Which also saddens me.
And in it the separation is great -
There are whole centuries between us.
And its end
is not clear - Whether there will be a meeting of our
hearts.
No, I'm not Juliet.
And not Romeo is my
lover,
But for me there is no
More beautiful than the plot,
Than the love of this covenant.
Not seeing my "Romeo"
ever,
I've already given him my heart.
And with all my instincts
I think about him all the time,
That he not only shines
with intelligence,
But sincere and modest,
And a man pleasing to God.
And also, kind and gentle
in his feelings,
And
there should be a romantic touch in it.
And he is not deprived of humor -
he is enlivened by a funny joke.
And the spirit is so dear,
To make him feel good
with me.
And I would like to
hear his voice,
See his eyes and make sure,
that he needs me.
Then I would have followed him to
the end of the world!
Juliet said the same thing.
And I'm ready to love him
eternity,
By giving him your soul
infinity!
But alas, far from it
And my dream will not come true
in any way.
And the reason is simple:
he is not on earth
and will not be ...
EVER!
Yes, a little, but happiness
It was at Juliet's
And even their
marriage vows are sealed.
I will never have a moment
,
Just to look in
Into dear eyes and say:
I love you...
Well, there are
sadder stories
in the world,
What about Romeo
and Juliet.
After all, to live and love without
hope is more painful -
And this is worse than all deaths! 😔
---------
P. S. But I have hope
That I will be happy too.
My God - Jehovah will not leave
Me without blessings
never!!!

Proverbs, ch. 10:22; and 1 Corinthians,
ch. 2:9,10; and Matthew, ch. 6:6, 33; and go to the official website of jw. org)📖🤔.
Love!
My goodness Olivia Hussey was just mesmerizing as Juliet. What innocence and beauty she displayed in this tragic play. And Leonard Whiting with his beautiful and passionate eyes shown bright As Romeo. Brilliant!
+Mr54nomore Fully agree, Olivia is beautiful just so beautiful. Never tires watching her face.
+Mr54nomore Yes, I was in love with Olivia Hussey in this movie. Our high school English class got extra credit for going to see this movie when it came out---best extra credit I ever got!
+Mr54nomore perfect casting!!!
Lawrence Greene Yes it was...
He time traveled and became Zac Efron.
I love this picture and the theme of Romeo and Juliet music... unforgettable.
Hello Nilda,
How are you doing ?
Il più bel film mai realizzato. Regista, cast, storia, colonna sonora, scenografia, fotografia, costumi... Emozione pura!
This film and song had a profound effect on my life when I was a school girl! Still does now that I'm 64! ❤
БОЖЕ,как это красиво!Плачу,плачу,да просто реву😥😥😥
Olivia Hussey (Juliet) is so beautiful
A NATURAL BEAUTY
Well she is 71 now....I guess its easier to hit on her, than it was 35 years ago...
Just breathtakingly beautiful song/music and actors.
A magical combination.
Gorgeous Romeo ! My favourite ❤️
Leonard Whiting so amazingly beautiful...
A great movie. 1968 was an emotional time for me . Memories

It was such a loss when the film director (Franco Zeffirelli) died this year. The world will never forget him, he was so talented, and Romeo and Juliet is the proof of his genius.
JM yes
yes with franco zeffirelli gone and ennio morricone also gone . this piece and the mission of ennio makes me heartbroken .
@@littlebigjohn69 author of the music was Nino Rota.
I had no idea he died! Such a legacy he has
It will be equally sad when we lose Olivia and Leonard. Michael York is still around as well.
Ни одна композиция не мурашит меня так как эта😢
Б ольшая благодарность создателям фильма и молодим артистам ! Одно восхищение за красоту и искренность ! Привет из Киева ! е
I can't get over how much my first husband, who has passed, looked like Leonard. I was a lucky girl.
Sorry for your loss. Are you happy with your second husband?
63 yrs young. One of all time favorite songs from my teenage days.
Timeless Spirit. Ageless Body.
A classic / iconic piece lives on ....
So It is. So Be It. ❤️❤️
This is timeless and the best..After all these years, still goes into your heart...
Back when real talent existed. Outstanding.
A time for us ... is one of the greatest songs ever written! Mancini ,,, one of the greatest writers! A lovely tune beyond words!
The original song was written by Nino Rota of Godfather fame.

+Bernard Booysen There are no more inspiring writers like Shakespeare either :)
So true Victoria so true...
+Bernard Booysen or the music for that matter...
+Bernard Booysen the illuminati dont allow good movies or music. there has been a dramatic deterioration in american culture.
Fully agree with everyone would go back to that life anytime.
They will always be my favorite Juliet and Romeo, the original version is always the best
It's hard to look away from her.
The only version with a singer on youtube, and the best version, thank you.
@@lisadean619 Why does it seem that we can't ever find it again?
Watching, September 11, 2019.
Feeling so much like back in that time of our lives during the 60's. GREAT YEAR!
A classic love story movie of a lifetime immortalizing young Leonard and Olivia's beautiful love pair.
THANK YOU to Franco Zefferelli for making this grand beautiful movie.
I never get tired watching over and over again.j
Hello Marie,
How are you doing ?
The song lives forever with the love of Rome and Juliet
I watched it when i was 16 in Germany 41 years ago ( TV ).
Even as a young man, i was in love with the movie, the song and the story……and of course Olivia Hussey ❤️
This is the best Romeo and Juliette adaptation ever ❤️
"For never was a story of more woe/Than this of Juliet and her Romeo."
They cut out Paris' scene during Act V in both this version and the Modern version With Caprio.
"Caprio, Caprio, wherefore art thou, Caprio?"
Shakespeare - true genius, though the Centuries endures
Волшебная музыка, разрывающая сердце. Спасибо Мастеру
Да. Нино Рота сумел передать истинную суть любви своей музыкой
I saw this film when I was 15 y.o., now I'm 71 y.o. I was in a cinema with the girl I loved so much, with all my heart. She was dead when she was still too young. But the love lives still. She looked like Juliet of this ever beautiful film. Stay in peace, Marzia.
Нет повести печальнее на свете
