I only have this problem when I don't apply beard butter at night. I use a heated brush on a daily basis and take breaks usually on my weekends. The blow dryer has been my nemesis since day 1. My beard doesn't respond well to blow dryer heat at all. I live in a windy state and it just adds to the frizzy static. When I apply beard butter at night, the heated brush is amaizing. When I don't use butter the night before heat, I get a blowdryer like response. I would only add, have consistent night time routine. I feel it sometimes overlooked at how important it is. Not as important as hydration but a close second. Awesome video Dan. Hope you and the family are feeling better. 👊 Awesome video Dan.
When my beard got to my collar I started using a round brush and a blow-dryer to tuck the bottom of the beard. It gave it a thicker and more purposeful look while keeping it off my collar until I grew past it. Congrats on 50k Dan.
Hi Dan, I personally went through all the issues you describe. Once, when my beard was puffing out at the sides, I thought the answer was to take my beard trimmer to it.. WRONG!. As my barber forcefully explained (I stood corrected). He introduced me to heat and Captain Fawcett beard Balm. As you quite rightly said.. Making this a daily routine solved the issue.. Peace Out ✌.. Jed.
Good info Jed. I had a barber that told me to just trim those flyaway hairs. I believe that was wrong as a fly away here today is a good beard hair tomorrow. If every time we cut our flyaways, we would soon have a transparent beard. We have to be careful with taking advice from barbers. It seems yours gave you the right advice.
@@saltyswimmer1997 Hi, You're absolutely right.. That's exactly what my barber told me after my self inflicted attack with the trimmer. He told me that fly away hairs today is my full beard of tomorrow.. the answer is to train those hairs, and not to cut them.. Peace Out ✌.. Jed.
I don't need balm frequently anymore, but during awkward phases Luxurious Bastard balm is the only way to go. Super stiff, great scents, great hold, great ingredients.
Firstly, I do recommend your channel to newbies. First, to anybody having questions about anything more about beard care, no one else but your channel will give the best help for beard related advise on butter and oil and heating. Bobby Sugars on his channel is pretty cool though. Secondly, I am going differently right now, I use hairspray then a balm to compete. TiGi hardhead blows GOT2B glued Wax spray out the sink, but no balm needed if not freestyling, although hybrids exist I hear. From my experience, no heat is needed to get it straight enough for me, although it will have big body, which is what I want for my narrow face and kinda big tall neck. People's head shapes have a great deal to do with it too. Third, what have been doing is going to grocery store and getting some olive oil/avocado oil cooking spray from grocery store, also pick up some castor oil in the oil aisle - cheap cheap!! Apply the olive/avocado oil in sections first in shower without letting water hit beard. Spray ends and inside between each section. Now grab the conditioner like a tea tree will work for straightening, but I swear, I found Surface or Joico work especially well.. These are designed for the worldwide market standards of scalp massaging by pros specifically for hurt sensitive scalp burning with blown up and out hair stands, but my results I see are what is most important. The lather is extremely light. Reason being for the castor oil and olive and avocado is essentially for weighing, slicking, and dissolving previous grim. It is chemistry as like dissolves like, like new conditioner helps dissolve old conditioner). Also the beard has more chances of hygral and perhaps effluvium issues than the head hair. Go thru the normal routine of shampoo and conditioning after placing the castor oil mixed in with the conditioner, and then on to your normal first step of shampooing. Note: Don't use coconut oil spray can, unless you brush it out immediately as it will flake and clump, unless applying it before the first step to gonahead and wash it out- makes little sense to have dandruff looking snowflakes to improve the tucked downward look of beard, although it is quite heavy. Of course pick your hair thru all the steps. And don't use bacon grease or lard, trust me these end up to stinking so bad a skunk smells better. I discovered a better crazy looking beard that looks so much younger and thicker with some gentle straightness.. Want to go further?. For me, not usually, butbbecause I do dirty work. But if so, then I apply the hardhead picking thru it till stiff and then in a petting type motion applying the balm patting downward. Hit the tips especially. And besides my routine or Dan's if freestyling, some use oil in the beard first but for the stashe, I have watched the 2020 #1's routine without any oil application at first, but his beard hair is a slight anomaly. He is looking for hold and the oil reduces stick. OMG freestyling I have seen mess some beard up!! Mad Viking Beard Oil has awesome with shine! Could it be in part the reason of sunflower oil? hmm.. Ferocious is great butter with or without sheep sebum in any scent combo. These are my best discoveries. BJ's Beard and Bush Brand smokes Honest Amish and Ferocious on balm. I like it better than butter for my beard.
I would like to add that I don't like heating up waxes and whips on hair strands very much. My theory is that it is like waxing a car with hot paint..I got a microscope to take a better look. Thank you for saving us with info!! It just depends on the mood and weather to what is best for my experience experimenting. This is my second yeard and first tweard. Honest Amish seems great for the cold days. I know one thing else, I gently pull out clumps of beard some before combing. And I start at the bottom at first when combing out tangles.
Heated brush all the way bro 👍🏻 I use mine twice a day for about a year now because I have a dirty outside job. I hotbrush before work. And again once I’ve showered and washed my beard every day after work. I’ve never had any damaging issues. Just be sure to use a liberal amount of argon oil (it’s heat resistant and inexpensive ) after you lightly towel dry your beard and before you hotbrush it 👍🏻👍🏻
Oil and heat every day with a blow dryer and a comb, works wonders! And it does take practice. I don’t use firm hold beard products on my beard, only oil and butter. Sometimes a little mustache wax if I feel I need it that day. I use “can you handlebar, primarily” Another great video Dan! 👊🤘
I found that using too much product and over conditioning lead to styling problems for me. I used to oil and butter in morning and night. And I was using a beard bar soap that I believe was stripping a few times a week. Once I settled down and started following the command routine, oil in morning, butter at night, couple times a weak beard wash and once a week pine tar soap for stripping, I found my beard started playing along. Beard is about 7 inches now and the command routine still does great, but I have found that you have to understand your beard products and how they affect you. If I use a thick oil I don’t need butter at night, and I really don’t condition at all. Seems to be working for now lol. Thank you Dan for great videos and even better advice!
I agree entirely with all of this. I use heated brush all over my beard, even with it at 7 inches. I usually do 340 on sideburns and mustache, going a bit slower to tame the curls. I then brush everything else at 300, going a bit faster (just not dragging it through fast) to make sure to not over straighten. I also make sure to use the heat brush on my underbeard, starting at my adams apple and using it to pull the hair down (my underbeard likes to naturally curl up toward my chin/neck. I also have used balm, but have laid off of it a bit since it's gotten longer.
I use heat daily as described, both. The humidity here is always 70%+, so I "over straighten", then let the humidity put the natural looking texture come back in. As far as firm products (if not wearing a mask) a tiny bit of balm on the outside to hold fly-aways, could do day butter but never have.
In the past, I've used Bossman beard pomade with good results. If you you don't like that "set" feeling, either apply it before styling, or if used as a "finisher", give it one quick comb through after applying.
it's crazy all the different phases and seasons you can go through when growing a big beard over years of time. now that i'm in a longer status, i mainly only have issues on the top sides. currently using dans latest methods with the heated brush to try to keep it tame. some days are better than others. always hold out for the good beard days.
I've only ever used a blowdrier for my beard, about 6 days per week. Once I got used to using both hands equally well, and figured out a combing/brushing pattern, it all clicked into place for my beard. I rarely use balm, but when I do, a medium hold works best for me. There are tons of product reviews on this channel, so if someone is looking good balm, I suggest looking through some of the earlier videos.
I've used a heated brush for a while, and have used honest amish heavy duty balm for about a year. Stopped used the heat for a couple of weeks just to give my beard a break. Back to normal next week
@@DanCBearded I would recommend using a heated brush when going through that awkward stage - where it might seem it's stopped growing. You will be surprised how much it's actually grown
I have done 2 things that help during awkward phases. First, I change up my heat routine. What I mean by this is that I will sometimes change the temperature on the hair dryer, or the direction in which I brush my beard , sometimes both! Another that I use and recommend to friends is Honest Amish beard wax. It is affordable, easy to find and works for me!
@@saltyswimmer1997 sorry it took so long to reply. I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of the scent, but it works great! The feel in beard is top notch in my opinion!
Oils, butters, and my trusty Arkam hot brush are my routine. I've only been using my brush 2-3 days a week thinking that using my hot brush more would be damaging to my beard. Thank you for informing that 6-7 days won't do damage, I'm changing my routine immediately because I love how my beard looks after using the brush. Thanks for another great and informative video!!!
Sometimes all i use is pure shea butter with some essential oil for smell. Shea butter is an ingredient for many balms, but not sure people use it by itself like i do. It's not for firm hold but it softens the hair a lot making it easier to give direction.
I started the heat recently and it's actually good. I still need some practice, but the direction of my beard is way better. I was afraid to do some damage since I never use heat on my hair. With the beard oil and products, it's actually make more sense that I could use heat. I will need a better blow dryer tho. Thanks again 🌹
I've been using heat for a while and it does help. I've been in that 1st awkward stage of wrapping it under my chin. It's finally getting to the point where it actually pushes away from my neck naturally through the day and is starting to look great! Best advice I can give is have Patience!
I have found very good results by using Softee extra hold. No alcohol and it darkens my grays a bit. Can re wet it if need to freshen it up. Not particularly happy with the smell but the benefits outweigh the fragrance. Especially when it is humid and windy.
Grave before shave vanilla cigar beard butter is fantastic for nourishment, styling, and has a very pleasant scent I love the heated beard combs for my facial hair, I like arkam brand. As far as my styling, I like to straighen and then use oil and wait 5 min for my butter. Use brush on top and bomb on bottom at same time (works good for me because my beard has a tendency to be extremely curly)
It has taken me a while to come up a routine that works for me. I have tried everything, hair dryer, heated brush, balms, waxes, conditioners, no products, just oils, etc. My beard comes out best after a shower using no dryer or round brush at all just oil, a chicago #8 comb combing up and out a very light butter. If I'm going out I use bossman pomade great hold all day.
I learned a lot from this video. Thanks again Dan. It will help me in the future for me experimenting with changing my heat routine from blow dryer to heated brush more often for my beard length.
I feel as if Beard Balm is a better option than a heated brush. Balm offers your beard more benefits. In recent years its been foreshadowed by Beard Butter. In my personal opinion, Balm is a better product than Butter. I understand the concept of it weighing down a beard. All Butter does is moisturize the hair. Balm creates a protective layer, it seals in the oils. Its great for training your beard to flow in one direction. Its great for moisturizing the hair despite the wax. Its great for fly away hairs. Its great for styling and taming your mane. That's my personal opinion. I feel as if Butter is being misused. You wouldn't wear beard conditioner in your beard because it has shea butter in it. Everything has a purpose.
Appreciate the feedback! The conditioning you get from beard conditioner and beard butter are completely different things. One of the frustrations of the English language is having the same word with two totally different meanings. I actually made a video on the differences, so you can’t really compare butter and conditioner. And to bring up Shea butter… most balms also have butter ingredients in them, so that one misses the mark. It truly comes down to personal preference and your needs. There is no misusing. I know many that love balm, and that’s fantastic! I would never discourage them or say they are wrong. Just preference!
Great video Dan! Luckily because I found you early on in my beard journey, I haven't had any awkward phases to speak off although I've had to adapt my techniques and routine a bit as it grows! Looking forward to hearing how to solve my next potential awkward phase!
I have used beard balm from Artius man, seven potions, and beard octane and I do not feel like they offered much hold for my beard. I am not dissing them, that’s just my honest experience and the only balms I have tried. I have come to the conclusion that balms don’t work for my beard. I use heat daily and it helps. On awkward days, I comb more frequently than normal. That is my way of limping through the awkward days.
Love Artius man and their butters but companies you mentioned don't have balms, only balm I consider a balm is luxurious and scents last all day, allow yourself extra time in morning, it takes awhile to melt down in hands
Beard balm. I stopped for about a month. I just have been doing oil but in the past days my beard decided to go crazy and needed to be tamed. So back to balm and headed beard brush.
Hey Dan 👋 👋 👋 I recently subbed and to be totally honest I don't regret it for one sec! Keep rockin it out brutha!😁👍😎 Edit: BTW new intro is EPIC! Love it!💪🔥😎
Great topic Dan and something I struggle with on a daily basis. I use a hair dryer and heated brush but I still can’t keep the sides down. I have used firm hold balms but they did not help and I no longer enjoy the firm balm feeling in my beard. I think it is my stying and amount of product issue. For stying what direction for blow drying and heated brush to control the hair sticking out? I brush up towards eyes and then straight down. Next day I brush towards chin and then straight down and then just straight down. Heated brush is just straight down
I too try to avoid balm and wax. So I've been using oil, butter, and a hair dryer. It really does wonders. I focus on the problem areas (side flyaways and chin curls) then the rest of the beard. Been really impressed with the process recently.
That's great Dan! I'm in the collarbone awkward phase. Learnt something new. I use heat daily and I love Whiskey Hardtrack butter ( Not Balm) to hold it still is affective
I am in one of those awkward phases. I was under the impression tbatvheat every day would hurt the beard but will try it. Oil first then heat...will try.
Conditioning weekly, combing twice daily (really three times if you count whilst in the shower), butter a few times a week... Those things, the length and genetics makes for easy styling. However, heat is great when I want to look extra groomed. Completely unrelated, I have a cold. I notice, when I'm sick, my beard feels like it's sick too. More hair comes out when I comb, it feels a little more dry and generally unhappy. I wonder if this is a thing or if it's all in my head?
I’ve been using a Kent comb with a blow dryer. I’m going to try my heated brush soon to see how it does. P.S. I don’t have a super expensive heated brush lol.
I use a barrel brush with blow-dryer to help straighten my beard. As I have thick hair I also have to use more than normal doses of oil butter and balm. It works for me
I am in the collar phase and use heat, haven’t gotten the heated brush…yet but hello Christmas Brio and heated brush!! I do use the Seven Potions beard wax daily and love it. Leaves my beard soft yet manageable. I
@@DanCBearded effectively using a hot brush and Im at that second awkward stage wanting the end result to be what you're wearing. So maybe just proper effective usage
My beard is definitely growing out instead of down. The chin is down to my chest, the cheeks just can't seem to catch up. I cut the chin in half thinking it would catch up but no. lol I'm trying to get it all together for a nice thick braid. Before now it stuck out so much and made me look homeless. So I kept trimming from the cheek up. As a result my braid was way thinner than I wanted. Still thinner than I want. Beginning to wonder how much longer it's going to take for the upper parts of my face to join into the rest.

Hey Dan, they only balm I use is Bahawat’s. Like all there other products their balm is excellent and unique. It gives great hold with out feeling super heavy. I don’t use it all the time but it’s my go too for when I need that little bit of extra hold.
I remember when my beard would stuck out instead of lay down. I used biotin to help speed up the growth to try to get out of this phase, but I think using my Chicago comb in the shower and afterwards made a big difference
Thank you!!!! Both sides my beard on my Jaw joint flares up on one side and flares out on the other. I just started my beard again so I will start the heat routine
Definitely need more practice with my heated brush. I only use it every other day because I’m too scared of heat damage as my beard is really curly and I operate the heated brush at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In regards to the hold products I use..I am a HUGE fan of magic city beard. I use their butter on my eczema and psoriasis patches and it improves the patches and scales better than steroid cream. I love their oils, balms, and butters. Thanks for another great video!
*update* After a week of practicing styling my beard, I found the best routine for me is blow dry as straight as possible by using the “comb over technique” and then comb up and use the heat brush to brush it up and then down and then focus side burns and mustache at 360 degrees and then some balm!
Currently having this issue around my sides and jawline...I'm all jacked up. Thanks for the vid! I need to get out my Shea Moisture Balm...good hold! I've been doing heated brush first then blow-dry, why, idk, idk what I'm doing 47% of the time but as long as it's growing, I'm good with it. Thanks Dan ...it's snowing up here
I think this might be one of the most helpful videos. Most people are afraid of the awkward phases. It usually leads to shaving the beard. Thank you Dan. Do you do you? Do you. 🙂 Number 1 advice... patience!!!
Yeah bro. I felt like cutting mine many times in those awkward phases. I am glad I stuck it out. I try to encourage all new beards and to get through it.
so. i have the problem where i always fall asleep on my left side. the result is that the left sideburn, which like the right is short, grows in all sorts of directions. the right side grows nice and tight and downward facing. i use a boar's hair brush daily but it won't even pretend to lay down. i haven't started using heat yet and don't think it would help because the sides are so short. and i don't like the feel of balm (speaking of which, anyone want a balm i've got? only used twice). i do have the wrapping around the chin problem so i guess i should start learning how to use my beard brush now.
Lucky's mustache wax. Pea sized ball cut in half. Each side of stache gets a half. Comb it in real well. Very waxy at this point. Now use low heat brush and comb laterally. When I say laterally I mean the mustache and the beard. This gives the beard a small dose of wax which can be later hand brushed down. That's my current technique. Your technique will change as your beard grows. 1inch technique will differ for 2in and so on.
So I've just found and subscribed to your channel! I'm so glad I found all this information. I have two unrelated questions about my current beard. Unfortunately, the fireplace got to a small portion of the left side of my mustache. Is it safe for me to just trim the other side to closely match or should I just leave it all alone? (It's hardly recognizable but I see it) Secondly, I am new to the bearded community and so I haven't been using the beard oil and balm as I should have. I really like my current (shorter) beard but for health, should I start over or can the beard get healthy even after neglected for a while?
Hey Steven, welcome to the channel! 1) for sure trim it slightly and trim it even. Check out this beard singe video: ruclips.net/video/cqRZbr3M-VY/видео.html 2) I would start using beard products and see how your beard feels for a couple of weeks. Beards are resilient and you will be trimming as it grows out (new healthier hair is always growing in)
I find Honest Amish premium beard oil and Honest Amish slick beard wax to be very good at timing my beard. This does necessitate more frequent washing to prevent product buildup however. I think they do a great job without overdoing. I don’t always use beard shampoo. I frequently just use a warm water beard rinsing. With beats shampoo 2 to 3 days per week. I do use a blow dryer and at times a Heated brush on a setting of about 260°. I also enjoy at times Honest Amish heavy duty beard balm.
I was just thinking about this topic last night I started using balm don't like the feeling so I am going to go with the heat brush do you have recommendations for brand and if available cordless I am a truck driver so cordless helps
Thank you for the link and code my home page is full of the companies you recommend I am waiting for a bunch of stuff to be delivered I have one more question how do I get involved with your live chat you do
I'm a huge fan of your channel Dan but I have a question I have a Aberlite max heat brush can I use beard oil before I use my heat brush or should I wait till after I use it?
Balm, beard wax, hair pomade ? ? what's wrong with beeswax heated with any carrier oil to liquify and homogenize(make uniform) it? Some beardsters find all these specialized beard branded products useful, or they wouldn't exist. I don't.
On days I don't blow dry, I run a medium hold balm through my beard, comb it through, and then hold my hands flat to my face for about a minute. The heat from my hands seems to lock in the balm and make everything lay in place.
Perhaps counterintuitively, when my beard sticks out I will often blow dry and comb it up and out and that can help tame it. But that is because the cause of my beard sticking out is that the side hairs kink where they hit the neck hairs.
A heated brush was the death of my beard. They are effective in straightening hair, but the damage was cumulative to me. I think a heated brush makes it too easy to damage the beard since you don't really know how hot it really is. A blow dryer, on the other hand, you feel the heat on the skin. My beard was a foot long around the end of 2019, and even my barber mentioned that it just needed cut back bad. It was really in bad shape from overuse of the brush. I ended upcutting it back even more, and now I'm back to a foot length and I think none of the beard I currently had ever touched a heated brush, and it is substantially better in every way. Also a beard needs some curl to poof up, a hair straightener works so well that all the hairs become straight and make the beard longer and thinner. I'd only recommend a heated hair straightener to a guy with a beard maybe 6" long or shorter.
For me, I've noticed that the texture of my hair... I have larger curls, like 2 inch curls... So as it grows, I have to change things up, and revisit older techniques that I thought didn't work... Constantly evolving... 🤣😂🤣
Hi Dan I’m looking for some advice. I’m trying to grow my beard out and it is still short but since I’m just starting to get facial hair I have a few patches in weird spots. Specifically my mustache which is almost nonexistent and goatee area and the very center of my chin there’s a gap between the two sides of my beard on the very tip of my chin but my cheeks and everywhere else grows great. Any tips to make sure that it grows in nicely or to help it grow in?
Hey Dan and Chat I have a quick question since we’re on the heat topic. If you have a fine beard what temp do you want to start out with when using a heated brush? I know lots say 360 but I’m curious if thickness and density matters when using heat not everyone has really thick beard hair.
@@DanCBearded Big thanks Dan I’ll start with that. Aberlite has a nice Black Friday deal I’m thinking of getting the pro. I’ll start with a lower setting.
Heat x100 I have had much better styling using heat, vs firm products. Even if you don't want to buy a heated brush MOST people at least have a hair dryer laying around, or you can go pick one up for cheap. PROPER heat application makes a world of difference for me.
my chin seems to grow faster than my sides, my cheek line is very low (amish like) and no matter what the sides seem to shrink right up, while the center stays straight and just looks goofy. the sides seem to be not growing, they got to the length they are now and feels like it hasmt gone anywhere.
I’m coming up on 2 years of growing and I’ve come to really like the revlon heated blower brush. It’s basically like a large cylinder brush that blows hot air like a blow dryer. I give my beard a few passes with that after the shower to lighten up the heavy curls and make it just a light wave. Then I work in the beard oil and give it a combing with the Kent combs. Once in a while, I’ll add a conditioner balm that has a little bit of beeswax in it but not enough to really hold. Once it’s been heated and oiled, just a light combing will reset anything that gets wonky from the wind or other activity.

My problem seems to be that my beard his my chest and starts flipping up and out during the day. My beard is thin, not full like yours, I did purchase the Albrite brush but it is almost like my beard is too thin for it, thoughts?
The problem could also be the heat and/or the tension. For the tension, perhaps gently pull your beard down to add tension while you run the heater brush through it. For the heat, try running the heater brush more slowly and evenly through the hairs of the beard.
Hi, gray beard here. I do have a rarely used heated brush that I don't use because it makes my beard look too thin. I use a blow dryer for the appearance of a more full beard. For the flip, let it grow out more. The length will help you get past the award flip stage, plus, at a longer length gravity will start to help.
Man, maybe it's just me but I always feel like I'm in an "awkward phase" 😃. Regular heat is one I just haven't started yet but I'm sure it's inevitable. I'm almost 4" length and notice my cheeks puffing quite a bit.
I was one of those who believe heat would damage my beard but I have been using it almost daily for over a year and my beard is in tiptop shape and I have never had split ends so I am convinced. I do use the medium setting though, I try to avoid the high heat.
I think the heated brush/comb is my goal. I shower at night, get up for work at 4AM and don't like using the hair dryer as my wife is sleeping in the next room.
Yes, the first time I used it Wines’s like how am I supposed to get this out of the tin haha. But just takes some extra rubbing between hands to melt it down.
I only have this problem when I don't apply beard butter at night.

Fantastic feedback and add ons from personal experience, thank you!
Heated brush all the way bro 👍🏻
I use mine twice a day for about a year now because I have a dirty outside job. I hotbrush before work. And again once I’ve showered and washed my beard every day after work. I’ve never had any damaging issues. Just be sure to use a liberal amount of argon oil (it’s heat resistant and inexpensive ) after you lightly towel dry your beard and before you hotbrush it 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback!
Oil and heat every day with a blow dryer and a comb, works wonders! And it does take practice.
I don’t use firm hold beard products on my beard, only oil and butter. Sometimes a little mustache wax if I feel I need it that day. I use “can you handlebar, primarily”
Another great video Dan! 👊🤘
Thanks Phil! Practice is so key
All great points, thanks Matt!
Thank you my friend!
I use heat daily as described, both. The humidity here is always 70%+, so I "over straighten", then let the humidity put the natural looking texture come back in. As far as firm products (if not wearing a mask) a tiny bit of balm on the outside to hold fly-aways, could do day butter but never have.
Humidity plays a big part, great add on!
In the past, I've used Bossman beard pomade with good results. If you you don't like that "set" feeling, either apply it before styling, or if used as a "finisher", give it one quick comb through after applying.
Thanks EM!
it's crazy all the different phases and seasons you can go through when growing a big beard over years of time. now that i'm in a longer status, i mainly only have issues on the top sides. currently using dans latest methods with the heated brush to try to keep it tame. some days are better than others. always hold out for the good beard days.
Oh for sure!
Awesome, thank you Bill!
I've used a heated brush for a while, and have used honest amish heavy duty balm for about a year.
Stopped used the heat for a couple of weeks just to give my beard a break. Back to normal next week
Awesome!
How do you like the honest Amish beard oil brother?
Thanks Greg!
Thanks Jay!
Sometimes all i use is pure shea butter with some essential oil for smell. Shea butter is an ingredient for many balms, but not sure people use it by itself like i do. It's not for firm hold but it softens the hair a lot making it easier to give direction.
Awesome!
That is awesome to hear! Practice is key!
I use my blow dryer daily, but haven't been using balm. I may try again and see how it holds up with all the heat from work.
Keep me posted if you do!
I've been using heat for a while and it does help. I've been in that 1st awkward stage of wrapping it under my chin. It's finally getting to the point where it actually pushes away from my neck naturally through the day and is starting to look great! Best advice I can give is have Patience!
Patience is key! and it is worth it
I have found very good results by using Softee extra hold. No alcohol and it darkens my grays a bit. Can re wet it if need to freshen it up. Not particularly happy with the smell but the benefits outweigh the fragrance. Especially when it is humid and windy.
Awesome!
Grave before shave vanilla cigar beard butter is fantastic for nourishment, styling, and has a very pleasant scent
I love the heated beard combs for my facial hair, I like arkam brand.
As far as my styling, I like to straighen and then use oil and wait 5 min for my butter. Use brush on top and bomb on bottom at same time (works good for me because my beard has a tendency to be extremely curly)
Awesome, thanks for the feedback Matthew!
I don’t like wax in my beard. But Only wax I’ve used was honest amish . An it had a good hold
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi Dan, excellent advice (as always!). The addition of hand gestures to emphasize points, adds a whole new dimension to your message. Well done, you!!
Thank you Bruce!
Thanks Bob!
I learned a lot from this video. Thanks again Dan. It will help me in the future for me experimenting with changing my heat routine from blow dryer to heated brush more often for my beard length.
You’re welcome!
I use pomade but just on the side burns and slightly below. For special occasions I use a blow dryer on the whole beard
awesome Joshua!
Going through the second stage. Have found that heated beard straightener and oil work for me.
Finding what works is so important. I’m glad you have!
That is amazing to hear Jonny!
Thanks for the feedback G!
Beard balm. I stopped for about a month. I just have been doing oil but in the past days my beard decided to go crazy and needed to be tamed. So back to balm and headed beard brush.
Thanks Dave!
Hey Dan 👋 👋 👋 I recently subbed and to be totally honest I don't regret it for one sec! Keep rockin it out brutha!😁👍😎
Edit: BTW new intro is EPIC! Love it!💪🔥😎
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel!
Heated brush is just straight down
Great add on, thanks Donald!
I too try to avoid balm and wax. So I've been using oil, butter, and a hair dryer. It really does wonders. I focus on the problem areas (side flyaways and chin curls) then the rest of the beard. Been really impressed with the process recently.
Awesome, thanks Mike!
That's great Dan! I'm in the collarbone awkward phase. Learnt something new. I use heat daily and I love Whiskey Hardtrack butter ( Not Balm) to hold it still is affective
Love their butter too!
Living in a high humidity area, I have to add a dash of sea salt spray once properly dried and styled.
Oh interesting!
I am in one of those awkward phases. I was under the impression tbatvheat every day would hurt the beard but will try it. Oil first then heat...will try.
The heat misconception is a big one, but not a worry if you do it properly!
i use BOSSMAN Beard Jelly Oil .
Cool!
Just filmed a video on that exact topic today! Will come out one week from today. Certainly not in your head.
@@DanCBearded That's awesome. Great videos Dan C. Lots of love from America's hat.

I think you are approaching it the right way. Keep going and keep me posted!

I remember when my beard would stuck out instead of lay down. I used biotin to help speed up the growth to try to get out of this phase, but I think using my Chicago comb in the shower and afterwards made a big difference

Hey Dan C 👊
Hey Gabe!
Awesome, thanks for the feedback!
*update* After a week of practicing styling my beard, I found the best routine for me is blow dry as straight as possible by using the “comb over technique” and then comb up and use the heat brush to brush it up and then down and then focus side burns and mustache at 360 degrees and then some balm!
I still have awkward stages after years. Great video Dan!

I think this might be one of the most helpful videos. Most people are afraid of the awkward phases. It usually leads to shaving the beard. Thank you Dan. Do you do you? Do you. 🙂
Number 1 advice... patience!!!
Yeah bro. I felt like cutting mine many times in those awkward phases. I am glad I stuck it out. I try to encourage all new beards and to get through it.
Thank you Brian!
so. i have the problem where i always fall asleep on my left side. the result is that the left sideburn, which like the right is short, grows in all sorts of directions. the right side grows nice and tight and downward facing. i use a boar's hair brush daily but it won't even pretend to lay down. i haven't started using heat yet and don't think it would help because the sides are so short. and i don't like the feel of balm (speaking of which, anyone want a balm i've got? only used twice). i do have the wrapping around the chin problem so i guess i should start learning how to use my beard brush now.
It would be so helpful to try and rotate sides you sleep on or to try sleeping on your back
@DanCBearded unfortunately I'm kinda stuck on the left side, but somewhere thru the night I always end up on my back.
Great feedback, thanks Matthew!
I bought some cremo oil and I had some dry skin problems but I Pick up some grave before oil

Check out this beard singe video: ruclips.net/video/cqRZbr3M-VY/видео.html
2) I would start using beard products and see how your beard feels for a couple of weeks. Beards are resilient and you will be trimming as it grows out (new healthier hair is always growing in)
Thanks alot dan! I swear the last 3 times I've had beard trouble you upload a video for that exact problem 🤣 my hero
That's my job!!
Awesome, thanks Alan!

I'm a huge fan of your channel Dan but I have a question I have a Aberlite max heat brush can I use beard oil before I use my heat brush or should I wait till after I use it?
Oil before heat, always!
Thank you Dan keep on making great beard videos
Balm, beard wax, hair pomade ? ? what's wrong with beeswax heated with any carrier oil to liquify and homogenize(make uniform) it? Some beardsters find all these specialized beard branded products useful, or they wouldn't exist. I don't.
Yeah, they are products for a reason I guess
Question. When you use a heated beard brush, is your beard wet, damp or dry?
Damp, with beard oil
What about instead of a heated comb a beard straightener?
A heated brush of sometimes referred to as a beard straightener. I am not aware of a different type of tool
On days I don't blow dry, I run a medium hold balm through my beard, comb it through, and then hold my hands flat to my face for about a minute. The heat from my hands seems to lock in the balm and make everything lay in place.
Great feedback, thank you!
Perhaps counterintuitively, when my beard sticks out I will often blow dry and comb it up and out and that can help tame it. But that is because the cause of my beard sticking out is that the side hairs kink where they hit the neck hairs.
Oh I do the same!
Thanks for the feedback Stephen!
I've been so sick with covid, sadly I've been neglecting my beard, and it shows

Hi Dan I’m looking for some advice. I’m trying to grow my beard out and it is still short but since I’m just starting to get facial hair I have a few patches in weird spots. Specifically my mustache which is almost nonexistent and goatee area and the very center of my chin there’s a gap between the two sides of my beard on the very tip of my chin but my cheeks and everywhere else grows great. Hey Dan and Chat I have a quick question since we’re on the heat topic. If you have a fine beard what temp do you want to start out with when using a heated brush? I know lots say 360 but I’m curious if thickness and density matters when using heat not everyone has really thick beard hair.
I would start with 320 and not go above 365. Try different ways!

Can we get an updated video of your morning routine? I wanna see how wild your beard gets over night
Perhaps!
Heat x100 I have had much better styling using heat, vs firm products. Even if you don't want to buy a heated brush MOST people at least have a hair dryer laying around, or you can go pick one up for cheap. PROPER heat application makes a world of difference for me.
Such a Game changer
@@DanCBearded I really couldn't believe how much heat helped, other than adding additional length!
my chin seems to grow faster than my sides, my cheek line is very low (amish like) and no matter what the sides seem to shrink right up, while the center stays straight and just looks goofy. the sides seem to be not growing, they got to the length they are now and feels like it hasmt gone anywhere.
My advice would be to trim to a style you like as it grows in more evenly
I’m coming up on 2 years of growing and I’ve come to really like the revlon heated blower brush. It’s basically like a large cylinder brush that blows hot air like a blow dryer. I give my beard a few passes with that after the shower to lighten up the heavy curls and make it just a light wave. Then I work in the beard oil and give it a combing with the Kent combs. Once in a while, I’ll add a conditioner balm that has a little bit of beeswax in it but not enough to really hold. Once it’s been heated and oiled, just a light combing will reset anything that gets wonky from the wind or other activity.
Thanks Joshua!
Good info thank you 🙏🏼

Great tips from the fellas in the comments. Keep trying different methods and techniques. Practice truly is important!

Man, maybe it's just me but I always feel like I'm in an "awkward phase" 😃. Regular heat is one I just haven't started yet but I'm sure it's inevitable. I'm almost 4" length and notice my cheeks puffing quite a bit.
Heat will make your life much easier. I personally like the heat comb over the hair dryer.

👍
Thanks as always Rob!
Do you just use beard butter ?
I use beard oil in the morning (and/or after every shower) and beard butter at night
