      The hairs on my head started to grey when I was in my late teens but my beard stayed very black in my 20's. In my 30's I was shaving off the grey facial hairs because my style was just a Soul Patch or a Goatee for many years. I tried to dye the salt and pepper in my 40's, but gave it up because I hated the grey roots showing a few days later. No way was I going to immerse my face in toxic chemicals on the regular.

Alot of my friends either died young or ended up in prison luckly I had my first son and a light switch flipped in me he saved my life I got out of the streets and move to a small town. Dan my Brother, this is such a great video. I have followed you for nearly a year now and your advice has been amazing. I thought that I could not learn much more but after watching this I realised that every day was a school day. The amount of times that I have just what you talked about without even thinking and powering through when I got a knot in my hair. I have now conciously made an effort to not do this.
    If I can add a tip to our Bearded Bretheren out there it would be twofold:
    Firstly, make sure you Co-Wash regularly.
    Secondly is a bit more long winded. I have 3 combs that I use when combing my beard, I have an ox horn comb which has 3mm tines and 3mm gaps between them. I use this one first. I then have another ox horn comb with has 2mm tines with a 2mm gap between them. I use this one next. Lastly I use a normal Kent comb where the tines are about 1mm and the gap is about 1mm.
    I realise some of you may be thinking that paying for 3 combs may cost a lot but in the long run would you not rather do that than rip valuable hairs out of your beard?
    By doing this is gradually takes big knots out easily then medium sized then by the time I get to the Kent comb it goes though my beard like a hot knife through butter.
    This is my experience and advice so please take it or leave it. I have only put it on here to try and help people.

    I learned from experience that my afro textured beard does not like heat, from blow dryers and heated tools: (I would get split ends right away) The only time that I use heat is with a conditioner on freshly washed beard. My "curls" are tightly coiled so I always start with finger detangling before I use a wide tooth comb. And I comb only when it is just slightly damp. Also, I use a brush only on the cheeks when it is dry, never on the length of my beard, wet or dry. But then My beard is past my chest when stretched out. For everyday, I keep it in a loose "bundle" so it looks like a short contoured beard and I only wear it out on special occasions. The bundle keeps my beard safely out of the way when I am working using my hands. The bundle only works on a very long beard, more than a foot long and makes it easier to wear a mask.

    I never comb through on a dry beard. With wearing face coverings sometimes during the day I’ve been keeping a small spray bottle with water in my truck and a wooden comb. I’ll spray mist my beard but not soak, then carefully ease the comb through to reshape. Seems to be working for me. For sure let the tools do their job!! Good lesson Dan!! Thx 😷👊🏼😎

    I have been watching a lot of your videos and do consider you my trusted one when it comes to beards. I am 67 and recently retired from a public safety career in the fire service and can now not shave. I have been growing now for almost two years and my beard has never seen a scissor or clipper. I have always thought my beard should of been longer than it is, but it must not be in my genetics. I use scotch porter co wash, honest Amish leave in conditioner in between washing and only use pine tar soap to wash with and every man jack beard butter at night. I use a heated beard brush a couple times a month to straighten.I use a spray bottle to wet the beard in the mornings with honest Amish beard oil or leave conditioner and use a large tine plastic comb to slowly comb it out, as Dan described in this video. Here's the issue, lots of hairs in the comb. No tangles and if it sags I don't comb it through but take the comb out and reposition it. I am totally surprised with the amount of hair in the comb that I even have a beard. Is it the comb, products or something else in my beard routine?

I have to use grooming tools that are long and widely spaced apart and a lot of oil for slippage and I have to comb from the bottom or tips of the hairs and work my way up to the skin every time even when it’s short. Starting from the top or the skin never works for me. Great tips Dan C couldn’t agree more mate.

    I read somewhere that is important not to wash your head hair or beard in really hot water because it weakens the follicles, especially if you brush it straight after a hot shower, l like to finish my shower with cool water for a moment before jumping out, then towel dry my beard before combing or brushing it.......
    Cheers Royce.

    If I get a snag, rather than power through it (as I used to), I like to switch to a larger toothed comb. Surprisingly, I recently switched to a solid coconut oil as my every day go to and snags are nearly non existent now. Now, regarding Grays, I used tweezers like crazy once I decided to do the big beard thing. Hurt like all get out, & seemed like those guys came back even faster & brought a few friends with them. Now, when I awake in the morning I'm rather proud of those new old guys I see sprouting out in there. As a single middle aged man, when not required to wear a mask in certain places, I notice that the ladies seem to like silver shine! Stay thirsty my friend! Lol

I find holding the comb at a 90° angle while combing keeps you from pinching the hair and less likely to get tangles. Of course using a good co-wash is a must. 👊🏼👊🏼 :-{}}}}

    "Let the tool do the work" is sound advice, but which tool? Brushes may be Boar Bristle (or synthetic in the same style, or with some synthetic), Detangling, or some combination. Combs may have fine, coarse, wide, or detangling teeth. Leaving aside the question of material, Can you say which are suitable, under what conditions or beard type, and how to tell?

    Really great point Dan! We can worry about new growth all we want, but if we don't keep what we have, then the end result is net zero. Out of curiosity what does pulling hairs due that is so bad? I mean I definitely get that pulling a hair is very aggressive to the hair follicle, but won't it just grow a new healthy hair afterwards? Or does it sometimes result in unrepairable damage?

    Question on the hair bulb color. Does a healthy gray hair not at the end of its life still have a gray bulb? If so, how would you distinguish between a premature loss or a natural life cycle hair loss? Thanks ahead of time brother!

    • @DanCBearded
      @DanCBearded  4 года назад +2

      Many grey hairs will still have a colored bulb, but if they do not there is a way to tell where the hair is at in its life cycle. It comes down to the size of the bulb. The bigger the bulb, the less the hair was ready to come out.
