Great video. Here’s that summary, Dan. 1- Shorter beard, less oil. Longer beard, more oil. 2- Thin oil, use more. Thick oil, use less. 3- Dry skin, more oil. Oily skin, less oil. 4- Humid weather, less oil. Dry weather, more oil. 5- Run hand through beard after 30 minutes. Greasy hands, used too much. Itchy dry brittle beard, used too little.
I read this and I exactly used too much this morning 😂😂 I dropped oil on my left side on my chin area and the right I realized now I had more than what I needed then on top of that I use the beard balm after so that doesn't help make my hands less greasy 😂 Thanks for this

Good morning, I'm very new to the beard scene. I was trying to figure out how to put together a question for you about beard oil and how to apply it after a shower, how long to leave it on your my face etc. You basically answered my questions. Now to use up my little bottles. Switching over to what you recommend should be painless. See I got oil all over my dress shirt I was wearing at church. I was approached as to what was on my shirt. Now I know to leave it on my beard for 30 minutes. I must say, I'm so glad I found your website about beards. Thank you for all you do. I am a member of your videos and enjoy them. Hey up Dan my oil bottle is a spray nozzle I normally spray on hands about 6 sprays rub into my hands go over my beard then spray on my anti static wooden peach wood comb and countine working into my beard while comb. I definitely use a good about but not daily maybe once or twice a week
What an amazing beard and sensational person. Awesome video Dan and explanation as you covered all aspects because we are all unique with different types of beards and climate living situations. You covered it all.
Excellent guidance! This has interested me since I first heard of beard oil, shortly after letting my beard grow. I set variables aside because while they are important to the result, I can’t do much, if anything, about them. Droppers may also be a variable. I’ve read that droppers contain 1 mL, equal to 20 drops. But we’re applying beard oil, not engaging in Medicine or Chemistry. I’m rotating 3 beard oils now whose droppers take up and dispense 40, 35, or 30 drops. Each dropper is consistent, but I’ll stay with counting drops. Also, I believe pump-top beard oils dispense 4 drops per pump. As I understand you, the goal (for best amount of beard oil) is to pass the 30-minute test as close to slightly-oily as possible. I’ve seen a guideline/recommended range of 2-3 drops per inch (or 1 drop per cm)-it seems you may be using a bit more than 3. So I will take 3 per inch into the test. If not oily, I’ll add 3 until the result is slightly oily and then cut back until not oily. Whatever that number is, I think it will give my beard and wallet maximum benefit.
@@DanCBearded Of course, you are an inspiration to us bearded dudes! Longest I've grown a beard is 3 months, I think I am going to try a year soon and see how it looks.
Great content and advice as always Dan 👊🏻 I’m at about 9” and start with about a dropper and a half normally regardless of viscosity. Then depending on how my beard feels after applying the oil I may add more if I feel it’s needed.
So many factors to take into account, this is why you are so crucial to follow! Most people just slap it in and say thats good, but we know to much can be bad also! Keep bringing the knowledge and lets see all those amazing beards grow bigger and stronger!
definitely a game changer for me also, but only after the proper oil application. maybe we'll get a new full routine video again soon, as this one was just about the oil application.
I just cut 6 inches off my beard. I am now right around 12 inches also. When I put oil on, I use a full dropper and I stick the dropper through my beard and put it directly on to my skin and I just put drops all over my chin and face that way. It's the easiest way for me to guarantee where the oil is going. After I've dripped it all on the skin, I use my hands to gently rub it in to the skin and doing so also gets it in to my beard as well. I wait about 10 minutes, then put my butter on. About a nickel size for my length of beard.
Good info. I’m still zoning in on the correct amount for my 5”-6” “thin-ish” grey beard. Some days I can feel that I’ve used a bit too much, so I start with less than I think and if I’m right I’ll use a little more after the 30 minute test.
Great explanation Dan! I did a HUGE trim at the end of last year and plan to do so again this year. Going to rock the beardstache going into 2025! It was such an odd experience having to adjust the amount of oil and wash that I used, but eventually I got the hang of what worked at the short length.
Great job as always Dan!!! UPS delivered my first Dr. Nick’s AMAZING MAN STUFF earlier this morning. I can’t wait to try it before bed tonight followed by my Detroit Grooming TRAVERSE CITY butter👍
I always say start with less and it’s easier to add more until you figure out how much your beard needs to. My beard and skin craves oil so I tend to use a lot even with a little beard.
Fantastic video Dan! I use about 1 and a half droppers full, depending on the length of my beard and oil viscosity. My skin AND beard hair love the oil! Oil is definitely the most important and impactful product for my beard. Always remember less is more! Just like Dan said, start off with a small amount and work your way from there. 💯👊🤘
I only do about 6 or 7 drops of Dr Nicks peppermint beard oil. I have a10 inch beard but it’s very fine and perfectly straight. I’m guessing I’m not using enough oil but I’m kinda budget conscience. I’m in nj so the weather is getting cooler. How many drops can I get away with? Also .. how long will it last if I go through 1/2 a dropper a day? I’m willing to be more generous in my beard care but can’t afford to break the bank at least at the moment.
This is definitely a great video! Even though Kev only has about a 4-4 1/2 beard, it is extra thick! We actually use about 3-3 1/2 droppers in his beard. So many "guides" out there say use 3-4 drops or something of that nature with no guide on so many drops per length! Kevin did that for so long in the beginning! Everything is such a learning process and so subjective based on the individual. Great information Dan!
I know I overdo it with the oil and butter, and I don't want to jinx it, but so far, I haven't noticed any negative effects. Maybe my growth has slowed and I just don't notice it, but I haven't gotten any clogged pores. The only time I cut back on the oil is if it's one of my thicker ones because I don't like the feel of too much thick oil in my beard.
Question, i'm a ginger, and I feel a thicker viscosity oil is best for my beard, but the thickness makes it pull on hairs as I put it in my beard. Do I apply thicker oil on wetter hair? So that it doesn't pull hairs?
I used to do that when using thicker oils. The game changer for me was combing thoroughly before applying the oil, and being a bit more gentle when applying thicker oils.
@@DanCBearded ya I just noticed the thicker oils seems to spread better if my hairs a tad more wet. Also i've started doing cold rinses each morning first 3 days i've noticed a difference in shedding 👍
you briefly mentioned porosity which is one of those things you just have to figure out. my gray beard is very thirsty so i tend to use a little more oil. i'm at 11.5" right now and 2 dropper tops is what i use. i also rotate my oils. one day i'll use a thin viscosity, the next day i'll use a medium viscosity. it's such a fun journey discovering all these little things. and once you have it figured out, it changes again...lol
I like to add my oil in smaller portions, maybe an 8th of a dropper, rub hands together and apply to my left cheek, another 8th, warm through the hands and add to the right cheek and so on with the chin, moustache area and neck, then again to run through and properly coat the hairs for heat protection until I feel i've added enough but I know everyone does things different 👌

When I started using beard oil over a year ago, I was obviously using too much by the look of my collars so I reduced it and would count out 10 drops which seemed to be ok for both my beard and laundry. Recently I cut it back to 4 - 5 drops as I kept seeing that number being mentioned in oil info but never would they mention the length of beard they were giving amounts for. Mine is at 8 inches now so with the info from your timely video, I'll go back up to 10 drops again. Thanks Dan.
Hey Dan Do you think that you can give me a run down on what you think about the Best Beard Stuff Products. They are pretty expensive and what I have been using, just wanted to know if the quality is worth the price in your respective opinion.
I remember my first bottle of beard oil when it said 3-4 drops of the beard oil meant the dropper top lmao and then i scaled back on it. Years of beard care and proper companies , on average i do have a short beard but my skin is super dry so i use a full dropper no matter what. And prob with a restrictor top i use 10 drops. Artius man gets a half dropper.
Hey what’s up Dan You said too much of a good thing can be bad, can you elaborate on that? Also I’ve seen a video of yours on Nicholas Beard Works…a long time ago. Wondering if you could do an update on that brand. Seems they have a lot of different oil blends/carriers, some I’ve never seen in any other beard brand oils before. Curious on your thoughts..are they good, are they better? On the website he’s got a lot of info about the blends, wondering if it’s legit. What’s your top three beard brands of all time? Keep doing your thing, great info you put out.
Too much oil will clog your pores and cause problems. I haven’t used NBW in years. The owner was a little bit much for me. This would be the closest I get to a top 3: ruclips.net/video/dN3nqZA3JnI/видео.htmlsi=o9V9sLJXx98XTAhz
My beard is about an inch away from reaching the bottom of my my pecs, and easily air dries. I regularly use Beard Octane and try to conserve it, so I've been applying about 15 drops worth before later applying the butter. My chin starts getting a little crusty/itchy the next day, so I'm still figuring out what is enough for me.
Dan CLEAN-Bearded! What is the best way to prevent itching for new beards? My neck kills me for the first 3-4 weeks of growing it back. Never itchy on the face itself tho, only below the jawline.
Hey man! 1) make sure you are drinking enough water. Most do not 2) exfoliate with a comb in the shower 3) wash with beard wash daily 4) use quality beard oil Should be itch free!
Also something that's easy to forget, thicker viscosity beard oils you wouldn't need as much compared to thinner ones. I'm currently using Skol Beard Co's beard oils and they use Shea Oil as the first ingredient and Castor Oil in the bottom, so on my 25cm (10in) beard, I typically use about 3/4 of a dropper
Dan, totally agree with the video. I will add something you cut in thirds if you use oil, butter and balm for like a business meeting. Or you cut it in half If you're just an oil butter or balm person. The point is that you need to cut to the amount that you would typically use. So for butter and balm you would use one thumbnail you cut in half if you are using it with oil? Hope this makes sense to others. I personally typically use one dropper of oil and one thumbnail of butter in the morning. I do this because if I use just oil half throughout the day I'm itching like crazy. For some reason butter stops that.
All preference and personal variables. Regardless, a balanced rotation is almost always best. With that said, the more dry the climate, the more a rotation can/should rotate towards thicker oils
Solid advice. I have learned a general "pool" size, in my palm, that works in most cases. However, i use lighter oils most the time and recently tried a new oil that was very thick and probably didn't give it a fair shake, as the application was just too heavy with the thicker oil, as i used the same "pool" as a thin application. Dan's variables here are good to consider, when needing an adjustment from the norm. side note, WE NEED THAT COLLAB OIL!! send here please haha. can't wait to try it.
I always use about the same amount of oil on my beard, but I switch oils everytime. I make my own beardoils, in which I change some of the carrier oils, aswell as the scent. In my logic I never overuse any one carrier, I never overuse thicker oil nor thinner oil.
I’m very excited to hear about a new Beard Octane x Dan C collab. Is it likely to be a 2025 release, or might it sneak out before the end of 2024? My expectations need to managed, Dan! 😂
Hey Dan my question is I’m Muslim and I pray five times a day and in doing so I constantly wet my beard so do I keep adding oil or a butter to keep it moisturized or what
If you use a product like a beard wash, I would add oil after. If not, just feel it out. If the beard gets dry and brittle, add more oil. If not, you’re fine
Thanks! quick question, is it ok to just buy 100% organic oils that aren't labeled beard oils. For example, i bought 100% organic Argan oil which cost me a fortune lol and i occasionally use it as a beard oil.
Would a gray beard be another variable? I can’t speak to this because (regrettably) I never grew my beard pre-gray, but I tend to use more oil because it feels like my beard absorbs a lot.
My beard is very thick I usually use a dropper in a half depending on the oil blend with aplication I naturally have dry skin so I don't know if that varies into play as well
Ontario Canada here, definitely hear ya on the season change on the beard. I feel I've got a good balance! But I always gotta drop in to see the teacher at work! 😂
I haven’t had to use beard oil in over a month rice water and essential lavender oil and tea tree soak the rice in cup water for at least 30min then add 3 drops of each oil mix it then add to a spray bottle works great makes my beard stay soft a feel great all day

Dan, I noticed in this video that your beard flows very well. Mine does not do that. Does the amount of oil make the difference?😊😊😊
@jimcummings4712 not likely. That’s generally due to overall health of the beard. Many factors!
Great video. Here’s that summary, Dan.
1- Shorter beard, less oil. Longer beard, more oil.
2- Thin oil, use more. Thick oil, use less.
3- Dry skin, more oil. Oily skin, less oil.

Do you think that you can give me a run down on what you think about the Best Beard Stuff Products. They are pretty expensive and what I have been using, just wanted to know if the quality is worth the price in your respective opinion.
Hey man! I have never heard of that brand and can't find it with a search. Are you sure that is the name?
I remember my first bottle of beard oil when it said 3-4 drops of the beard oil meant the dropper top lmao and then i scaled back on it. Years of beard care and proper companies , on average i do have a short beard but my skin is super dry so i use a full dropper no matter what. And prob with a restrictor top i use 10 drops.
Artius man gets a half dropper.
The drops recommendations on bottles is about worthless lol
Hey what’s up Dan
You said too much of a good thing can be bad, can you elaborate on that?
Thank you for the great advice. Can beard oil be used on the entire face or just only on the bearded area?
I use it on all of my face and most of my body. Entirely replaced lotion and moisturizers
No night routine? That would be a game changer
When you referred to dropper top are you talking about the glass dropper or the amount you get when you squeeze the bulb
It’s not a perfect science, but it’s around 20 drops. Bear a full glass dropper
Dan CLEAN-Bearded! What is the best way to prevent itching for new beards? My neck kills me for the first 3-4 weeks of growing it back. Never itchy on the face itself tho, only below the jawline.
Hey man!
1) make sure you are drinking enough water. Most do not
2) exfoliate with a comb in the shower
3) wash with beard wash daily
4) use quality beard oil
Should be itch free!
Very true!
I don’t recommend anyone ever use oil, balm, and butter at the same time though
Should you use a thicker oil when it’s cold and dry outside? Or is viscosity a preference and it’s more about how much you use?
All preference and personal variables. Regardless, a balanced rotation is almost always best. With that said, the more dry the climate, the more a rotation can/should rotate towards thicker oils
I also remember beard color being a factor. Grey & red would probably benefit from thicker oils.
It’s soooooo good!
@@DanCBearded I’m ready when y’all are!
I always use about the same amount of oil on my beard, but I switch oils everytime. I make my own beardoils, in which I change some of the carrier oils, aswell as the scent. In my logic I never overuse any one carrier, I never overuse thicker oil nor thinner oil.
That’s great John!
I’m very excited to hear about a new Beard Octane x Dan C collab. Is it likely to be a 2025 release, or might it sneak out before the end of 2024? My expectations need to managed, Dan! 😂
I really don’t know, good question! That’s all on octane driving that ship
Thanks for your reply
Thanks! quick question, is it ok to just buy 100% organic oils that aren't labeled beard oils. For example, i bought 100% organic Argan oil which cost me a fortune lol and i occasionally use it as a beard oil.
Yup, totally fine
@@DanCBearded Thank you! Do you have a video on this?
So after I oil and heat, I use butter. My beard when touched will make my hands glisten. That seems right to me. Wrong?
That’s correct! Butter will never really fully absorb in. That’s one of the reasons I do not use it during the day.
Would a gray beard be another variable? I can’t speak to this because (regrettably) I never grew my beard pre-gray, but I tend to use more oil because it feels like my beard absorbs a lot.
Yeah, absolutely!
I use 1 ml here in Upper Canada, eh
Hey neighbor!
My beard is very thick I usually use a dropper in a half depending on the oil blend with aplication I naturally have dry skin so I don't know if that varies into play as well
Awesome!
Imagine being able to say that your "just out of the shower" beard is better than most guy's regular look 😂
Haha I hear ya, only because of a consistent night routine though!
One of these days the camera will flip around and we'll see the hallowed "beard product shelf"
😂😂😂
Gold
The GOLD!
Yes Dan ! Cheers brother
Ontario Canada here, definitely hear ya on the season change on the beard. I feel I've got a good balance! But I always gotta drop in to see the teacher at work! 😂
I appreciate it mikey!
I haven’t had to use beard oil in over a month rice water and essential lavender oil and tea tree soak the rice in cup water for at least 30min then add 3 drops of each oil mix it then add to a spray bottle works great makes my beard stay soft a feel great all day
Glad that’s working for you!
