Hey Matty, stellar video as always. A piece of advice from somebody that has been using the heat brush daily for the last 6 months- best to follow the same washing procedure and then applying a heat protectant (like argan oil) before straightening. Also 200 C (400 F) is said to be too damaging on the hair. 160 for thinner sections and 180 for the front thicker sections would be better. I use the blow-dryer+ brush to straighten it in a general direction and then the heat brush at 160 for the final straightening and to get the dips out. Try it out. Might give you a better look.
So I have extremely curly hair. My wife got me a beard care kit that came with a straightening comb. No I've tried to use it so many times that I just gave up because it wasn't giving me the results I was looking for. But after watching this video. Now I understand the actual use of it. And I'll tell you what. My beard came out probably the best it's ever had. Thanks for the video in the tips
I'll for sure try more heat and tension. The specific issue I have is my beard is almost all gray now and the individual hairs have gone from mostly straight to having a mind of their own once I grow my beard out. I've tried trimming the really wild ones over the years, but now that it's all gray that's kind of a lost cause LOL. If you ever wanted to address a gray beard specifically it would be grand. Keep up the awesome work and I loved the actual science in this video!
i'm with you on the gray. my beard naturally curls and waves bad once past a certain length. i apply oil after the shower and let it sit a few minutes while i get dressed. i actually use a comb to pull the hair side to side while applying heat. after a couple "sweeps" you can see the hair go straight and then i comb down while still heating. once it looks good, i do the cold shot to lock it in. it can still be a bit puffy on the sides but will relax shortly after, at least for me. i feel like the beard oil is key, find one that works well with your beard
@@feelingtardy Thanks for the feedback! What beard oil do you favor? I've tried everything from Beard Brand to cheaper stuff at my local stores and Amazon and tend to feel like most of them just sit on the beard. Maybe I'm not using enough becasue I dread the motor oil feel or look LOL.

Awesome video-I Wash beard - Pat dry beard 80-90% - apply beard oil and let set for 5 minutes- blow dry medium heat through out beard and under beard- run cold shot from blow dryer and then use heated brush on setting 320 no more- use only on puffy parts- I use only on sides and mustache- and beard will look amazing. Got this method through Dan C and have been doing well over a year and routine takes about 10 minutes- every morning and out the door. Ty for sharing detailed video.
Thank you for this! My beard grows in kind of a weird way. On the right it grows almost perfectly straight down. On the left once it reaches a certain length it grows in a wave that curls sharply back and to the left. It ends up looking ridiculous. I used your tips for thermal straightening and it looks so much better now!
I have a long beard and I bought a brush that is a hair dryer as well. Best thing ever it does amazing job straightening and drying my beard without over brushing overheating the hair. Haven’t used my blow dryer since!
Hello I'm a black dude with 'nappy' curly hair. So as of now i'm using the heated brush method. Trying to keep a long story short. As a kid growing up around and was raised by a lot of females. I eventually got tired of hearing that blow dryer sound. So when I got old enough to grow long enough facial hair. Coupled with bad advice from the women in my family. I first started out with the 'smelly' chemical relaxers. But later I realized all I really needed was heat to relax the hair instead. With a brush and hair pick. It Started to straighten out just fine. With the added bonus of using proper beard products. I was able to keep my beard straight and tangle free. Of course till It got wet from washing. Then I just repeat the process to straighten it again. The heated brush works great in this process. Hasn't let me down once, or damaged my beard hair at all. Been using it ever since. It's gotten to a point now in length where I like to braided from time to time.
I've got another heated brush, which works remarkably well for what it cost me, ie not a lot. I've found it works best if you run it through your beard real slow, so the heated blades stay longer in the beard, if you know what I mean. Having said that, it's probably time to go out and buy a blow dryer, I like the look of your results with that. Thanks for another informative video!
I've been using a heated brush for years. I have a short-medium length beard and I find a combination of using a beard oil or butter right after helps to make it look more natural with less overly-straight parts and less flyaways. Highly recommend. I wouldn't use it every day though, too much heat probably isn't too good for the hair.
@@mattyconradgrooming i'll definitely give super-dry a try! I try to balance it with the oil. Adds a bit of wave back after to the hair so it isn't so unnaturally straight from the heat. My beard is pretty curly in it's natural state.
This video came at the perfect time. I have this crazy wave on both sides just above my jawline…makes straightening/styling a pain. May have to look into one of the heated brushes.
Hey Matty. I have been using a straightening brush to prevent the annoying grow out. I have had a heated brush that worked similar to your demo and another that is quicker and super efficient. Without hair tension. With a slightly different technique, it takes me less than a minute. Might want to try more, guys might not want to become proficient with a blow dryer or take that much time.
I periodically use a heat brush, usually when my wife and I are going somewhere or a family function etc. Day to day I work and well take me as I am. When I do use the heat brush I use beard balm prior to heating, not sure if that's right or wrong. I haven't used your texturing paste although I'm on my 2nd bottle of your wash and I love it. I was so surprised at the longevity of how long a bottle last. Thanks for the tutorial Matty!
You should definitely use an argon oil on your beard for conditioner before using a heated beard brush. I would recommend using the Aberlite. It's amazing and only takes 2-3 minutes of use.
Hi Matt! You said it is not a good idea to use beard oil right after you blow dry it, or you could revert the straightening process. When to use beard oil then? I usually blow dry my beard in the morning and use beard balm and beard oil right after… I see now why it is not working properly… 😂
Thank god mines a monster when it wants to start going a certain direction I don't have a choice, my mother was a hair dresser for years i been cutting and trimming my own beard and hair for well over 20 years but once it gets past a certain length and starts to do these swoops I usually trim it but I want a longer beer that's not so out of control thank you for the video I appreciate it!
My beard has a weird push back spot on the front part below the chin. My beard is about 3.5 inches long, but the front part of it below the chin curves in right as it goes below the chin, then curves back out. I don't think you can see or tell when looking at me, but I can definitely feel it and feel individual hairs there are curved in this abnormal shape. I don't know how to fix it.
Wishing you the best for the grooming tools project. You can count on my patronage on their launch. I'm pretty confident I'm not the only one who'd be willing to pre order and help mitigate the release risk. Man, That promo code is coming up right on time. Thanks !
I'm curious when using an oil. If it is not advantageous to apply after blowdrying (which is my preferred method, i learned from you and love the outcome), when would I apply it? Thanks for all of your wisdom and helping the bearded community. You rock! Sick beard, as always.
Hmm. My heated brush seems to give better results than that one did. I wonder if it's because of my hair texture or if it's just a brand difference. I've never tried the blow dryer technique. I'll check that out and see what works best. Thanks!
Awesome video! I love how much time you put into your work. I’ve only tried a blow dryer once. I wasn’t too thrilled with how hot it made me. 😂 I prefer the heated brush. Specifically, the Aberlite Pro. My beard is naturally a kinky mess. I prep my beard by getting it nice and wet, then dry it about 75%. I add oil, wait a few minutes, then go to town for about 10 or so minutes. Once I get it all straightened at 340°, I lower it to 280° and come up from the back of the beard and utilize my hand on the front as a backboard. This helps get rid of that collapsed look.
Matty, do you find your beard grows quicker in winter or summer? People always say summer, but I find that mine is growing quicker and getting thicker right now in winter. My beard practically stayed the same length this past summer. I didn't even trim it during summer. Now it is longer and more bushy.
Love the Victory Beard Wash and Super Dry. I can 100% approve this stuff. I'm on my 2nd bottle of the wash now and going to be ordering another tin of the Super Dry soon. Just wish the small bottle of the wash came with a pump style like the larger one.
If you have a really long beard using the heated brush below the chin just removes all volume and you get a weird flat thin beard that hangs down and just looks bizarre 😂 Blow dry the hanging stuff and get right under for volume, then use the heated brush to get the curly puffy cheek bits to blend in with the rest and to tame the moustache.
Great tutorial. My beard is a combination of straight, curly and wavy. I can only get one side to straighten and it is super easy with either method, but the other side just won't do it. It wants to go 10 different directions and looks crazy. Looks about like yours does at the beginning of this video if I do nothing but wash it and attempt to brush it. So frustrating.
Great advice as always matty when will your products be available in the uk Loving your content by the way well put together videos keep it up thanks dean
Awesome guide here always appreciate more people getting into using heat since it can be a real game changer once you understand how to use it, and can completely change outlook on what your beard can be. Heat changed game for me but the big thing is finding techniques that actually work for you, its very easy to mess up, just have to keep trying. I'd say biggest thing most people run into and struggled with, myself included for a long while, is simply pushing hair into face too much. Hairdryer or Brush? For me both, blow out underside and work with pick to get all tangles out, stretched outward look kinda crazy, gently pat it all down with a heated brush starting from sides and following rounded area of face, i never brush front under chin area straight down but always from angle as otherwise flattening the front can look really silly on me, more natural following curve of face. Cold shot with hair dryer after straight down. imo always always put oil in first couple minutes before using heat (right after drying from shower typically), for me at least significantly helps health of hair as someone with longer beard who uses heat every day, and has been at this point for years now, with that and good designed-for-beards wash products still feels as good, as soft as ever since i started doing that.
I'm still confused regarding using beard oil and using a straightener. Do I apply the oil and wait for it to dry before straightening? Do I not use oil at all on the days I want to use a straightener? Thanks! I appreciate your videos!

Love your videos. I had been using a heated brush but my beard would end up like the chap at 0:18. Using your method with a hairdryer gives a much better look. However if I look down, tuck my chin into my chest etc, the beard splays outwards for the rest of the day. Do you have any methods to keep the beard straight or any tools to help keep it groomed straight throughout the day?
Hello, Since I follow your advises, I have many compliments. I thank you for that I would to try your Victory brand but I can't find it in France I need to find a solution for my hair now to match nice with my style 🙄
Thank you, gotta say love the nerdy stuff, great video. for next video or future i want to see how you style french crop style or messy frindge, not sure you like that 🤣
Once Agai, love the vieo and your commentating 👍. I follow those steps as you mentioned some of those techniques in previous videos. ive been growing my beard or a year and have another year to go to see how it looks. i am using ur beard wash and love it. Once im done with my paste from another brand i will be ordering yours. Thanks for your tips Matty, Hope 2024 is a GREAT one for you.
Nice, great advice. Im new to beards and its grown quite well but it keeps wanting to point straight out from my chin forwards or horizontally. What can i do to make it point downwards more?
I'm so happy I found your videos. I have one question. Unfortunately, I use a c-pap machine when sleeping and the straps curl my beard walls. I use a heated brush every morning. Is there anything else I should be using? Thanks in advance.
Can your next video directly explain to bearded guys' partners why it's important we take time to do this? In my case, while im being screamed at to help get the kids ready for school!! 😂 Great content as always Matty! 👍
So, if I'm not supposed to use beard oil after straightening the beard, when is the best time to apply the oil? Ive been applying it after so I get that wet and shinning look to the beard, is there any other product that would help with that? Thank you
Can you make a video or maybe respond to my comment, how you recommend to deal with that hole that sometimes beard gets under the chin after blow dry,pls help!!!
If i used the beard oil before straightening the tool ( the brush or the heater ) will be greasy and dirty afterwords hard to clean , when do i use it ?
Hi Matty, great video. I wonder, assuming you don't have curly hair, what does hair and skin colour have for an effect on styling. As I'm a blonde with a white skin I sometimes feel that you kind a notice the flaws of your styling more than you do with contrasting skin and haircolour.
The problem i have is that my beard is grey and grey hair is a totally different beast to tame, hair dryers dont have an effect,it sticks out whatever i do or put on it
So heating beard is not harmful at all? I am still a little afraid for using heating tools to heat the beard hair, I thought it could cause beard to break
Taking notes here: 400F / 200C. TENSION! 8 min no rush. No oil afterwards. Will give this a shot next heat brush time. Tired of my beard looking like my 3 year old's toothbrush
Eveeyone is raving about these heated brushes but i still dont see why honestly. The blow dryer still seems better to me. I use a blow dryer and im still not sold on these heated brushes. Guess im just gonna have to get one and try it for myself.
i have a really sparse beard on my cheeks, so if i straighten my facial hair it looks really bad, since all the holes are more visible (the curls kind of cover up a bit). Going for the 3rd month, but really thinking about shavin'it :/
Great vid, thanks for the tips! My current system is to towel dry after a shower, apply beard oil, then use a blow dryer and carbon comb - my beard is long and full but I can still run a comb through it thanks to the oil warming up and going slowly. Quick question - Should you always use max heat on blow dryer? I've always used medium so as to avoid nuking my beard every day. Thanks for the insight anyhow, I didn't know cool air helps hold the form after the heat, I'll give that a try
@@mattyconradgrooming so it's a balancing act... I guess the same is true for tension on the hair whilst straightening - finer comb/bristles vs. how much tension it takes to pull hairs out. Cheers for the info
Hi, I have a question. Since my chemo my beard has grown back, but it seems to cover my chin and cheeks less than it did before, causing my chin and cheeks to be more visible through the beard. Is there any way to kind of help this thicken up again, or am I just out of luck? haha
How long has it been? Hair can definitely grow back differently after chemo therapy…. There are sprays and powders you can use to give it a thicker look but you might just need to give it a bit more time to recover.

Since I follow your advises, I have many compliments. I thank you for that
I would to try your Victory brand but I can't find it in France
I need to find a solution for my hair now to match nice with my style 🙄
Thank you, gotta say love the nerdy stuff, great video. for next video or future i want to see how you style french crop style or messy frindge, not sure you like that 🤣
Once Agai, love the vieo and your commentating 👍. I follow those steps as you mentioned some of those techniques in previous videos. ive been growing my beard or a year and have another year to go to see how it looks. i am using ur beard wash and love it. Once im done with my paste from another brand i will be ordering yours. Thanks for your tips Matty, Hope 2024 is a GREAT one for you.
Thanks Gino!!! I appreciate the support!
my beard look like yours and it breaks a lot and itches. but I keep growing and trying to take care of it to make it look good.
Best of luck!
Nice, great advice. Im new to beards and its grown quite well but it keeps wanting to point straight out from my chin forwards or horizontally. What can i do to make it point downwards more?
Those stray grays that should be trimmed would drive me crazy
Do you apply any beard oil before you blow dry?
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you David 🙏🏻
I'm so happy I found your videos. I have one question. Unfortunately, I use a c-pap machine when sleeping and the straps curl my beard walls. I use a heated brush every morning. Is there anything else I should be using? Thanks in advance.
Do you use a beard oil at all or just the super dry
Keep up the great content Matty! I look forward to the next addition!
thank you for some great tips.
Can your next video directly explain to bearded guys' partners why it's important we take time to do this? In my case, while im being screamed at to help get the kids ready for school!! 😂
Great content as always Matty! 👍
Truth 😂
I have my biggest issues under my ears along edges any tips for that area
The best explained mate
Can you comb your beard too much in the run of a day? I usually comb about 4 or five times a day with a beard comb. Am I hurting my beard?
Any tips on how to make the beard denser? I have a long one but it is definitely not as dense as yours.
I’ll work on that!
@Matty what kind of brush was the first one you picked up when using the blower?
So, if I'm not supposed to use beard oil after straightening the beard, when is the best time to apply the oil? Ive been applying it after so I get that wet and shinning look to the beard, is there any other product that would help with that? Thank you
Can you make a video or maybe respond to my comment, how you recommend to deal with that hole that sometimes beard gets under the chin after blow dry,pls help!!!
If i used the beard oil before straightening the tool ( the brush or the heater ) will be greasy and dirty afterwords hard to clean , when do i use it ?
i really appriciate your videos i like them alot and they helped me a lot its a pity you dont ship your products to germany :(
Unfortunately a large company has a product called Victor and they tried to sue us. As a result we are not able to sell them in the EU 😕
Thank you my bearded brother! 🧔♂️
Spot on as always! ! ❤
I love this guy's Moustache !
Hi Matty, great video. I wonder, assuming you don't have curly hair, what does hair and skin colour have for an effect on styling. As I'm a blonde with a white skin I sometimes feel that you kind a notice the flaws of your styling more than you do with contrasting skin and haircolour.
New things to try! 🎉
Have fun!
The problem i have is that my beard is grey and grey hair is a totally different beast to tame, hair dryers dont have an effect,it sticks out whatever i do or put on it
Grey hair is often very coarse and resistant. More heat is required.
Can anyone tell me how many beard hair fall in a day can you make video on that
So heating beard is not harmful at all? I am still a little afraid for using heating tools to heat the beard hair, I thought it could cause beard to break
Oh, it’s definitely harmful… But probably not to the point of breakage. It will just dry it out which is manageable with decent care products
With a good read by Rick Rubin on your table. Do you dig it?
So far I am definitely digging it.
I bought a heated beard brush do you recommend me to use a heat defense spray before you use it.
Yeah those can be very helpful.
Taking notes here: 400F / 200C. TENSION! 8 min no rush. No oil afterwards.
Will give this a shot next heat brush time. Tired of my beard looking like my 3 year old's toothbrush
Screw asmr, this is way more satisfying
What is that hair style called?
Is the Victory Wash good to use in a shower ?
Absolutely… I use it everyday.
Whered you get the comb?
just sitting here patiently wating for you to sell the vistory barber stuff in the UK, and not for the insane reseller prices
Eveeyone is raving about these heated brushes but i still dont see why honestly. The blow dryer still seems better to me. I use a blow dryer and im still not sold on these heated brushes. Guess im just gonna have to get one and try it for myself.
I’m gonna try a few of them.
@mattyconradgrooming the aberlite pro is the one I keep hearing about all the time.
How to groom a naturaly Straight Haired beard video? Yes please.
i have a really sparse beard on my cheeks, so if i straighten my facial hair it looks really bad, since all the holes are more visible (the curls kind of cover up a bit).
Going for the 3rd month, but really thinking about shavin'it :/
Like I mentioned at the end. It’s not always the best option.
I feel like the heated beard brush is better for shorter beards.
Great vid, thanks for the tips! My current system is to towel dry after a shower, apply beard oil, then use a blow dryer and carbon comb - my beard is long and full but I can still run a comb through it thanks to the oil warming up and going slowly. Quick question -
Should you always use max heat on blow dryer? I've always used medium so as to avoid nuking my beard every day. Thanks for the insight anyhow, I didn't know cool air helps hold the form after the heat, I'll give that a try
It really depends on how curly/resistant it is. The more heat the more it will smooth the hair out… but the more it will damage the hair too.
@@mattyconradgrooming so it's a balancing act... I guess the same is true for tension on the hair whilst straightening - finer comb/bristles vs. how much tension it takes to pull hairs out. Cheers for the info
Victory super dry is the best
Thanks David!!!
@@mattyconradgrooming been about 6 months or so. The length is back. I'll give it some more time and see if it gets any thicker. Thanks for the reply!
