I started going grey at 30. My beard was almost totally white by 45. I used to color it, because I felt like it aged me too much to have a white beard at such a young age. Recently though, I've embraced it, mostly just because I just don't enjoy the maintenance of keeping the color up. Having a full white beard at my age (54) DOES age me. It's undeniable. However, it's also kind of unique and unusual, and I've learned to love that.
I have been coloring my beard for over 10 years. I have used many products. the men's product just don't work as well as the ladies. I use to have dark brown and now at 70, I would have WHITE hair. So i would recommend trying several different products to find out which one works best. The reason I use a women's product is that one does not have to use the entire product but use a glass to mix a small amount so that an expensive product can last months. I color every two weeks, use a beard conditioner often.
I color my beard and don't care when people point it out. I've been prematurely grey since I was in middle school. I'd rather look 33 while I'm actually 33 than look like I'm 45+
@@skarhead7597RUclips brought me back to this video after I watched it months ago. I saw your comment and just had to say I swear by Simpler!! Easy application & natural looking. Especially the new partial coverage formula.
I've watched a lot of beard care/trimming videos and none come close to yours Matty. They are super informative, practical and show all the steps. In short, fantastic.
As a hairdresser, this is a perfect video for anyone who will actually appreciate this vid in its entirety. Thank you Matty for this excellent tech info 💚
I believe the Just For Men for beards that you mix is a demi-permanent hair dye, not permanent. I have used it for years and researched it extensively. However, you are a professional and might know something I don’t, which is why I was a bit puzzled. Overall, I love your videos, they inspire me and I wish you could be my barber. You’re the best.
I thought about dying my salt n pepper hair & beard, so I ordered Revlon Colorsilk 100% gray coverage from Amazon. I thought I'd watch a couple of videos beforehand and yours was the first one I happened to watch. Now I'm thinking this is just another thing that's gonna take too much time away from living my life. If a girl doesn't like me because of my hair color than she's not the one for me.
It’s honestly not that much time since it becomes like a routine every month. Which is only 12 times a year. It’s self care and perspective. Not about a girl. It’s for yourself to feel fresh and looking good. 30 minutes of watching tv or doing something you regret like scrolling thru social media can be applied to some self love. I used to think like you but now I take time out everyday and week to put in some effort. It makes a difference in every aspect of life. Have good day
@@Meadowflames So many excellent points! It shows someone who takes pride in their appearance. As a woman, I dont understand women who let their hair go totally Grey. I guess they dont mind looking older. I will dye 💁🏻♀️ til I die! 😜
Thanks for the video! I only have a goatee, but it is long (think ZZ Top or Whisker Wars). I am 52 and do not mind the gray that I have in my whiskers, but I do realize that in my profession (teacher), there is quite a bit of ageism toward men who are not in admin after age 40 (at least locally). I am looking to change schools and districts, and have wanted to reduce my gray so my potential employer does not think that I have one foot in the grave. I do believe that I will leave my coloring to a professional, as my whiskers are too long...and I would make a mess. Thanks for making me not feel silly for even considering this.
The thing with colouring beards is that you don't have to overdo it, in terms of time, quantity and shade, it is just to soften grey hairs and level discolorations. You don't have to leave the product the time required, just a couple of minutes will do to give it a fresh look without anyone noticing. Don't forget to give the eyebrows a touch too.
Hello there Ivan. I hope you are doing well. From reading your comment I take that you know what you're talking about. I'm in my mid-40's and hace noticed that my eyebrows are thinning. In my late 30's I stated noticing that I have male pattern baldness up front. It doesn't bother me, but I'm not gonna lie, the thin eyebrows really do. I haven't done any research on this topic, but after reading your comment I figured you could possibly get me pointed in the right direction. If there is any information you could offer, I would greatly appreciate it! Take care and I hope you have a wonderful week.
I have tried every beard dye out there. For me, the Control GX is by far the best product I have found. Easy application, no mixing and no skin irritation.
I cant use any of the beard colors as they cause me serious irritation that can last for weeks. I finally tried the women’s hair color n a box going with dark blond. Finally no more irritation. It looks more natural as well and i can get these anywhere even when I’m traveling . I have somme grey in my head and beard so i use both areas. Its a game changer. I also get over ten applications with one box . Maybe it doesn’t last quite as long but the most important thing is it looks 100 percent natural. I used Garnier 70 dark natural blonde and leave it on 30-40 mins. But i have brown hair.
I’ve been using just for men for 6 years, I have dark brown hair & my beard is nearly completely white, I’ve found the most natural colour is light brown & blonde mixed together. Any of the others are way too dark & fake looking. Great video Matty, I’ve never considered using a semi permanent as well
I think this is a really good subject, there’s not much real world advice out there. I’m bald (shaved) & bearded so for me it’s super important to get it right as it’s the only thing to style 😂😂
Love the science details! To each their own. I’m turning 50 later this year and my beards already mostly white. Bald & proud, my beards what I got. Age can be attractive. Wear it! 👍🏻
@@mattyconradgrooming You did an excellent job on your color & explaining how it all works. Gotta say I was indeed impressed! Didn’t think it would look THAT good but you nailed it! All that you share is MUCH appreciated!
Thanks for the video! I could tell you had a blast making it, it was such a joy! A video disambiguating the difference between clippers and trimmers and everything else would be amazing - I'm trying to get into DIY beardcare and get some proper tools but it's definitely confusing starting out. Keep up the good work!
Tell the newbies who want to baldify themselves they don't need scissors and should use something better than a beard trimmer, both make me cringe seeing it
As a beard dying fella myself, i can say it has to be done at a minimum of every two months. My beard hairs grow about a half an inch a month and the greys poke especially along my cheek line. One day I'll just embrace the grey but not ready yet. Haha.
I think the color variations in a beard add a lot of visual interest. Going to a single color defiantly makes people look younger if that's what you're going for. There's another option called Cleverman that is worth a look.
I just picked up something called Volt. What I got is for short beards but works really well and is extremely easy to use. Why color it? My mustache has gone really light grey so it doesn't show up very well now. It's really simple to use, a brush that's like an eyelash brush for women. Shake it, brush/blend it through & you're done - no shower/washing it off, etc. I believe they have one like it for longer beards but I"m not sure (I shopped for it based on *my* beard type). It has to be done frequently but it's really easy to use and not all chem-land, more like how women use their eyelash brushes.
1) With Control GTX don't you have to constantly apply it throughout the week to maintain a particular color? 2) Why did you use both? 3) Can I just use the permanent color to cover up a couple patchy gray areas? 4) Have you tried Simpler beard dye? If so how is it? Btw, great vid!
1) you can definitely do that. It will make it progressively darker but it fades off fairly quickly. 2) I used both as a blend. I don’t like applying permanent dye to hair that doesn’t need it. 3) yes you can 4) I haven’t tried it yet. But I just ordered some.
Brilliant video. I used to colour my beard, religiously for some years. Too much high maintenance. And I used many products. But now I have embraced the grey and I am very happy with how it looks. This video is brilliant, and I wish it had come to me a couple of years earlier. Thank you and I have subscribed to your channel. Some very good information.
I’d love your thoughts on a red head going grey. My beard has lost its natural red and it’s been a tough time finding something that helps give me that natural red look
Just discovered this channel ! Fascinating video, as I dye my beard fairly regularly without really knowing very much. I have a short grey beard that I dye a little just to reduce the greyness without removing it all. Unfortunately my skin has started reacting to the dye and causes unbearable itching for about 2 weeks. So I’ll try something organic and see if that helps.
Can you possibly do a video where you try different brands of hair color and see which one works the best? I know Just for Men is probably the most popular. I have tried Simpler hair color which works pretty well as well as Cremo when they made it and about to try True Sons I think it is called. The ones I have tried, you don't have to mix, they either mix as you apply them to your beard or are already mixed. I think that might be a good video to do to try to find the hair color product that may work the best and lasts the longest or are all about the same.
I also tried a few different brands - Just For Men was my least favorite. Color was alright but my skin was much more likely to be irritated. I settled on Simpler about two years ago and still love it. So much easier to use, the color looks great, and as a side benefit my beard actually feels softer. Would love to know what you think of a variety of products - maybe something even better is out there! Love these videos and even all the science 🏆
Just for men has a lot os chemicals that caused me allergic reaction in my skin, besides it generates an artificial aspect. I highly recommend to dye your beard with herbal based-products (Henna-Indigo, etc.) which are kind of softer for the health and it gives a more natural looking. Good job, Matty!
Touch of Gray beard product is hard to find in local stores the past couple years. They used to all have it, now none of them do, particularly for the beard. I have to order online. I have more gray and white in my beard than I "feel," and also people confuse my son and I for brothers, so I don't want to look older than I feel, and my face looks younger for my age (no wrinkles other than around my eyes). That's why I use the Touch of Gray. I have no desire to pretend to be 20, so this product makes me look younger than my birth certificate, and more in line with how I feel. I started using the Touch of Gray for my hair too for the same reason. I get awesomely natural looking results from both products. Very happy with them.
This is the video I've been looking for. I am substantially more gray, and the gray is in patches, almost like entire stripes of gray all the way down from cheek to the bottom. I am way nervous about a permanent color, but am interested in trying the semi permanent. I dont dislike my gray, just kinda want to tone it down a couple of notches. I have a fairly long beard so I wonder if you think there is enough product for a long beard in one unit.
Hey Matty!! Hi from a fellow Vancouverite!! I just found your channel recently when I decided to create my own beard oil, balm, butters, and washes, as I don't like the scents (and high cost) of most of the commercial ones. In my research, of course, the algorithm starts suggesting similar and your channel popped up. Thank you for ALL your great content!! Much appreciated and have already used some of your tips for shaping etc., and my beard is already looking better (self taught here so some professional input helps a lot!!) This was a great video.. The idea of using the semi-permanent over the permanent is a great tip for the top line as it will hopefully fade before the beard starts to look like it is floating (if one is very gray) the beard grows out before one has the chance to touch up the colour. Once my beard has grown out some, I may come by and have one of your senior barbers give me a professional baseline that I can maybe maintain at home. I am pretty good at DIY but not sure if I have shaped my outline properly so would like to see a professional shape it. My last comment is to thank you for the eye-candy. You are a handsome man to begin with, but seeing you shirtless out of the shower was quite a delightful addition... don't blush!! You are a sexy man and you should flaunt it...!! You got a sub from me!! (wink) Take care my friend and thanks again for everything!!
I've been dying my beard for years. I first bought Just for Men Mustache and Beard and kept the plastic tray and the little brush applicator. Later I switched to Clairol colors medium brown 615 which works good for me. It's inexpensive and on the day I dye my beard it's a nice medium brown and then a few days later it's a little lighter which works good with my hair color. I still use the plastic tray and small brush applicator from Just For Men.
@@bradhuskers Yes you can. With the tray from Just For Men you can pour as much as you need to from the color and developer and then apply it to your beard. Do only an area or the whole beard and if you have left over close it up and save it for the next weekend. I usually do my beard every two weeks on a Saturday. Look up Clairol 615 they're inexpensive. Also there's a lighter brown and darker brown too if that's your color.
@@mattyconradgrooming Quick question What would you apply to seal the color in if you're using a touch up color applied with what looks like an eye lash applier, but it's for touch up. I don't want it to wipe off quick, nor get it on my lady when kissing, etc. Any idea? Thanks in advance, great video.
Dying it, in my experience looks and feels fantastic. Example: I have med length Dark(Black), with some red and grey in my beard. I chose jet black to start. Wrong choice! I personally found 1 color less than what you think is best practice M45(Dark Brown) in JFM beard color is perfect for me. Any darker and it looks really fake. Almost painted on. I leave it in for 15-18 mins. I've had countless compliments with a dyed beard and I am usually transparent (jokingly) about it not being natural. The permeant does slowly come out. Usually 2-3 weeks you'll notice it and you can dye again. Highly recommended!
@@gusffern very much a personal preference. After some experimentation. I have a fair amount of grey in my beard, so the extra time really helps make the color look uniform.
This is the most useful video so far. Real demonstrations and no short cuts. I understand how to perform this coloring and I will definitely apply them. I am nerdy too and I like details. Thanks.
One of the best educational beard videos I have watched. I myself want my hair gery/white. The reason for looking at coloring beards. After hundreds of videos I'm still looking for the best way. Now by learning about hair structure I'm even more disappointed. My search continues.... Great Video!❤
I actually used the Just for men beard coloring box last week and followed the exact steps like you. It's only now I am watching this well layed out video. Thanks a bunch for the awesome content .
So in the video, you used the permanent dye which I use, then followed it with semi permanent which I also use. My question is the semi is a beard wash, you brushed it in, which looked like less of a mess but, the video looks like you put it in dry too With it being a beard wash does it matter if it's wet or dry and is there a difference if you apply wet or dry? Your videos are awesome I watch you often. Also love your hat. I wear a vintage stetson temple, and keep my brim all up too. Thank you
But why does the permanent color itch so terribly? Is there a brand that doesn’t? I’m referring to just for men. And then I tried one made with herbs. It didn’t itch but turned my white beard red and or green. Just got to the segment about allergic reaction. That’s me thanks for including that information.
I have been coloring my beard for several years. Of course, needing more and more product to do so as the grey comes in more. I have went to layering permanent coloring in with shades of brown to try and replicate a non-uniform color. My beard has never been just one color. The last thing I want is for my beard to be so colored, and I've seen this before on guys, that it's so dark and uniform that it looks fake.
Excellent education as always Matty! Love your channel man! I have colored my beard since I was in my early 30’s. That’s twenty years now! Medium grey is my color. Just knew it worked. But now I know why!! THANK YOU as always for your expertise and friendly delivery! Cheers
Great tips: using a brush and comb to apply, how to get deeper into the thick growth, touching up with permanent dye, how to keep the adjacent skin from getting dyed... I have been using JfM Control GX for about a year. I leave it on for 20-30 minutes without skin irritation and get a rich brown with natural irregularity. The colour lasts and only requires redoing every couple of weeks to cover new growth. I used JfM Beard&Mustache a couple of months ago. My beard turned nearly charcoal black despite using the medium dark brown shade. I followed the directions to wait 5 minutes after all the hair was coated, but it must have taken me 20 or more minutes to get it applied everywhere. I have gone back to Control GX. It's the best and there is no possibility for error.
Excellent video Matty! As a guy who rocks more of a 2-3mm stubble beard and loves the salt n pepper look thats getting just a bit too grey, the tips about using Vaseline, a semi-perm and only rinsing, not washing, it out after were excellent advice! Thx much!
My cheeks are super light and not as full, so this gave me the idea to just do the cheeks and the "mustache blending hairs" to really gage if I should go short or long for the time being. I'm not quite done filling in, but it's been getting a lot more full over the last 2 years.
I love the way you scientifically explained this topic before doing it! I have been using the permanent M-35 for over a year now. If you want to use it to colour light, nearly transparent hair, like my weird-ass soul patch, be careful. *NEVER* leave it on for 5 minutes, especially if it contacts you skin. The light hairs will basically turn black, and the skin gets darker too. It will not wash out easily and you will look like an idiot for a week. I use it for 3 mins and that’s enough for me. If you do it for the first time, start with a shorter duration, you can always leave it on longer the next time. Also, the base colour seems to react with oxygen. If you only use a little bit every month it helps to use plastic wrap between the cap and the tube to seal it.
I'm watching this in August, it's 96° with a feels-like temp of 104°, and your winter coat and seeing your breath is like a scene from another planet 🔥🪐🌠
Very informative and congrats on the look at the end. However I'm confused as you call the "Just for men Moustache & Beard" kit "permanent" whereas from what I can see everywhere it's "demi-permanent". So was it an oversight from your part, something you know that most people are wrong about or me who don't understand anything?
Demi permanent is basically just a permanent colour that uses a very low level oxidant. It works the same as a permanent colour without creating the lift that most permanent colours will cause. Still stronger action than a semi permanent colour and often contains amonia.
In your video I learned some interesting things that I did not know about hair at the molecular level. Thanks! I colored my hair and beard for years, making it dark brown. One Summer when I was 115 I just decided to cut off my long hair that I hadn't cut in 15 years and shave my beard off. Now seemingly just in the last 2 years my beard is gone blinding White, a term that I have come up with to describe it is going full Moses. I have not cut my beard in almost a year, not even trimming it for edging it. What's interesting is when I used to color and trim my beard I would get a lot of young guys saying awesome beard man. Now that I look like I'm going to land a sleigh on your roof and hand out presents I get young women complimenting me on my beard more than I do men. It's just kind of funny. I'm grateful that I still have hair on top and that my beard starts just below my eyes and goes all the way to my toes. LOL
Hah, loving the "science" interludes, Matty. Thanks for all that you do, man. Running my first beard ever, and I do so appreciate your help throughout all of your content.
I started my beard journey a little over 2 years ago and have regularly died it from the start. Only problem i find is colors aren't what they claim to be. In other words, light blond means dark brown, lol. But it hasn't seemed to cause any damage. Now i have shaved my head so I'm really not worried about color matching any more. As far as what people think. I honestly don't give af. But your explanation of hair was very cool and appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Pro tip: most beard colours are progressive which means they get darker over time. Make sure you don’t leave them on longer than recommended.
Thx so much for the beard video. It was very informative. I've been colouring my beard for the past few years. If I don't it would be mostly white! Are you saying to not only use the Just for Mean Beard and Moustache? This is has been my method. It doesn't seem to last so long tho. I have never washed my beard first. I'll give this a try today!
I am new at facial hair and the biggest mistakes I have made have been slips with a high power trimmer, always go conservative. Your trimming your mustache had me on high anxiety!!
I love the use of Crayons ha ha ha! I've never looked at a video guide to colour my beard before, but it's good to verify that I did everything correctly! Love the top tip of lifting the cheek to trim so you leave a nice natural curve to the sideburns! 👍🤙loving your work buddy.
Hello Matty, Great Video!!! Thank you!!! I have been using Just For Men for years. It was a great price when i first started but now is $14.00 and up... I was in Dollar Tree a year ago and found they have beard dye very similar to JFM for only $1.25... Have you ever used this product? Its worked just as well for me than the JFM... Please let me know what you think...
I don't know what you think about this idea, but it would be cool to watch a video where people sent you pictures of their beard, style or whatever regarding beard and then you reacted to them and explain maybe some tips or things you would do to make them look better, cleaner, etc.
I started using the Just for Men "Touch of Grey" beard wash a few years ago because I was starting to look like Santa Claus. I like it because it looks a lot more natural than the permanent dye. I only use it a couple of times a month.
That’s awesome. It’s basically a semi permanent colour in a delivery system that only applies a small amount of pigment that builds up over time. It is a great choice if you have uniform grey.
Same here. I have zero gray on top, but my beard is almost completely gray, so it looks off to me. I use the JFM and leave some gray and it looks completely natural.
I use henna to dye my nearly white beard back to its normal black/brown, and it works a treat, is very forgiving in its application, and doesn’t irritate my skin. Or also creates a nice rich depth of natural looking color variations.
i used henna for years until two things happened. The first, I went to a bar with lots of UV light. My beard looed purple. number to, i had more than 25% grey, and this is too much for Henna, and at the same time i developed a reaction to henna, so i had to stop. Henna can cause sunlight sensitivity in some, so its really important to do a sensitivity patch test
Would be stoked to hear your opinion on the Control GX beard shampoo? The one that applies colour to greys over a period of time slowly with daily shampooing. I've had greys since i was i teen so I'm use to it; however with my beard it's tough accept. I like the salt n pepper look but with my greys they are no way uniform and are in mess all over the place! I've had a hard time enjoying the growth of my beard with how my greys look. I've used the Just for Men on my hair in the past and know how strong those chemicals are and my fascial skin can be sensitive and worried how it would react to semi or permanent dye to beard? Would you recommend the beard shampoo for someone's greys that are not uniform and a real mess everywhere?
First, I’d like to start by saying that I wish Matty was local to me because he’d be who I go to for sure! I’ve been dying my beard for about the last 4yrs. I’m turning 48 in a few days & have only had my beard for a little over 8 years. I get streaks of white that run from my lower lip down my chin along with some stragglers in my mustache. If the streaks were symmetrical I probably wouldn’t mind, but they are not. I have 2 streaks on my left & 1 on the right. So I dye it. I also hit my eyebrows which are starting to lose their color. I use Just For Men, Light Red Brown (M-27) which has been perfect for me. I have a little bit of ginger (strawberry brown?) and in the past I’d have to mix different colors to achieve something close but not quite because it would lack the red tones. I only blend the gray to get rid of the streaks for a more natural look. PS - Some guys will neglect the eyebrows & I find that giving them back a little more color makes my eye color pop & look a little more youthful.
I've been using the just for men permanent colour for a while and learned a lot of what you spoke about in the video by making a lot of mistakes. I would've appreciated this video a lot when I first started colouring my beard, your tips will still be appreciated though. :) A quick question: I looked up the semi-permanent colour you used, branded as the "Control GX". It seems to be marketed as a 'grey reducing shampoo'. Is that right? Can this be used in replacement of a shampoo? If so, can we use this product as a shampoo to wash out the permanent colour? TIA
Ya me too I’ve been using it as a shampoo on and off for years and it seems to be a good maintainer somewhat that way. I don’t want to be that vigilant with that coloring application and do alternate washes without coloring product at timesI Also I tried it on dry hair like Matty did and it worked kinda nice especially when I wanted to do a little more than just a maintenance deal, like when I let it go too long without any coloring maintenance and where newer white/grey hair spots were more visible. Just for men always seems to do the trick, although I’ve tried other so called less damaging products that also work kinda nice. They all take a toll just like a windy hot humid day in Fla (or anywhere) does.
I can't tell what the product you're using is for the semi-permanent. There are a number of Control-GX products; some are shampoos, for example. Please let us know.
Yikes to the Mite 😂 I'm glad I stumbled on your video as I've been growing a beard. Unfortunately, it's got more salt than pepper. However, I've been told it looks distinguished! Thanks for the info. It is very helpful. Aloha from Maui🤙
Excellent video with worthwhile content done right. Subscribed! For goatees that are kept really short, though, I guess we just have to live with the gray.
@@SitkaHowlz To go white you need to bleach and then put a toner on the beard to get the brass out of the hair... You need to know what your doing when bleaching your beard. You can burn your face. I watched other YT vids on bleaching hair. Also, what toner to use. Good Luck...
Seems like I'm 4 years late leaving a comment lol. I used JFM for years and then one day I had the same problem,it burned and left me with weeping sores. Grizzly Mountain works for me. Unless I use the organic base it leaves my beard purplish but I've been using it for years and I think I've prefected my technique and it works for me
Great tutorial Matty! Where were you when I started coloring my beard 10 years ago? I used to color my beard with Just For Men and it worked ok, but it was not always consistent since it's progressive. The past few years I have been using Paul Mitchell Gray Coverage 5+. I use a 20-volume cream to activate the color which works great on facial hair. It gives great coverage and since it's not progressive, I don't have to worry about getting too dark or not staying long enough to for the color to take. I also leave two small patches of gray on my chin as a way to look more natural, since I'm in my 50s.
I'm just a guy with brown hair and a blonde mustache with a blonde and red beard. So I just color it so it all looks uniform. Looks a million times better. If you all want a tip on how to blend it, put a liiiiittle bit in your eyebrows and up your sideburns.
Nice video only have a couple questions that doesn’t get mentioned in the video. When is it safe to use a heated brush after coloring my beard. And when to use any beard oil and butter?
Is mustache focused grooming could be a good video subject? There is at least potential for historical side note nerderies! Personally, I have a full beard and a hard time keeping consistent results under my nose. I only know the comb controlled upward clipper trim and it doesn't fit my face shape, unless I want a Tom Select's brush type finish.
I wish I could see a good tutorial on dying a naturally blond beard turning white. It just seems like all the beard dye I've ever used is diluted brown and makes the white look ashy taupey and almost purplish. The only good result I've had is dying the white brown then bleaching it. But the bleach burns my skin too much to maintain that color plus the bleach makes my beard coarse and brittle. Is there no pigment that's actually a blond color with a gold undertone? Everything is ashy or red.
Really top quality video and very informative. I assume as the hair grows out, to maintain the look it’s a repeat of what you just did? I look forward to the trimmer vs clipper video…..thank you for your hard work, love your videos.
Hey Matty great video, this was really explained well, thanks for sharing! Can you do a video how to line it up your beard with a straight razor doing it yourself?
I'm an Airbrush artist 🎨 and we learnt this at school when you overlap colours you get a third colour but always start light and work up to darker colours, usually yellow and blue makes green yellow red will make orange and so onn ,and that's another thing no one tells you at shops when asking for advice does it cause rashes or flaky itchy skin or pimples and how do you go about washing you face and does it react with beard oils etc

Good for you!
I've earned my silver. Had I gotten it for free, I probably wouldn't appreciate it either.

Henna Beard Dye is a much safer and natural looking alternative. It takes a little more work, but the outcome is certainly worth the efforts.
Have good day
@@Meadowflamesonce a month? What are you doing with the outgrown roots?

I concur!! I’m so glad I found this product!
Yoooo you killed this video man I LOVE that you give the "nerdy" information in a way that is effortless and cool it's truly impressive
Thank you! I needed to find a format that helps me access my inner nerd without making it boring for people 😂
I cant use any of the beard colors as they cause me serious irritation that can last for weeks.
Great tip!
I’ve been using just for men for 6 years, I have dark brown hair & my beard is nearly completely white, I’ve found the most natural colour is light brown & blonde mixed together. Any of the others are way too dark & fake looking. Great video Matty, I’ve never considered using a semi permanent as well
Great advice there! Maybe I should do a comparison video
Wear it! 👍🏻
I am 100% going to let mine go white. But right now it looks just a tiny bit dusty. I think both look great.
@@mattyconradgrooming You did an excellent job on your color & explaining how it all works. Gotta say I was indeed impressed! Didn’t think it would look THAT good but you nailed it! All that you share is MUCH appreciated!
White beards or a touch of gray looks fine..what looks bad is a white turning yellow, just looks stale.
How has this channel not been a thing already. This was great.

Thanks for the video! I could tell you had a blast making it, it was such a joy! A video disambiguating the difference between clippers and trimmers and everything else would be amazing - I'm trying to get into DIY beardcare and get some proper tools but it's definitely confusing starting out. Tell the newbies who want to baldify themselves they don't need scissors and should use something better than a beard trimmer, both make me cringe seeing it
Would love to see a follow-up video with how it looks a month or two after coloring.
Coming up!
As a beard dying fella myself, i can say it has to be done at a minimum of every two months. My beard hairs grow about a half an inch a month and the greys poke especially along my cheek line. One day I'll just embrace the grey but not ready yet. Haha.
@@mattyconradgrooming
Can you recommend a "ginger color" for my beard?
And can it do more than one application?
Month? I dye my beard every 10 days because it grows faster and you can see the white hairs roots. ~LUCKYLOBO
Sounds interesting! I’ll check it out! Thanks for sharing!
3) yes you can
4) I haven’t tried it yet. But I just ordered some.
The control tones on the top of the box omg been using that product for 10 years never had a clue
That’s awesome to hear. I personally love it when guys just embrace the grey!
I’d love your thoughts on a red head going grey. My beard has lost its natural red and it’s been a tough time finding something that helps give me that natural red look
I’d dyed mine purple.
I’lll work on that!
@@mattyconradgrooming thank you sir! I think it would be very beneficial.
Funny story.... I get dark brown beard dye from the dollar tree and it works fine for me. Just thought I'd toss that out there.
A semi permanent will tone it down a bit. Try to apply it to the Grey patches first to give it longer to process on the parts you want darker.
Much appreciated and have already used some of your tips for shaping etc., and my beard is already looking better (self taught here so some professional input helps a lot!!)
This was a great video..
(wink)

But can you re use the clairol for more than one application?
@@bradhuskers Yes you can. With the tray from Just For Men you can pour as much as you need to from the color and developer and then apply it to your beard. Do only an area or the whole beard and if you have left over close it up and save it for the next weekend. I usually do my beard every two weeks on a Saturday. Look up Clairol 615 they're inexpensive. Also there's a lighter brown and darker brown too if that's your color.

I leave it in for 15-18 mins. I've had countless compliments with a dyed beard and I am usually transparent (jokingly) about it not being natural. The permeant does slowly come out. Usually 2-3 weeks you'll notice it and you can dye again. Highly recommended!
I used m45 for this video. After a couple weeks it has lightened up slightly but definitely still looks dark and a bit more natural now!

How incredibly credible! Very thorough, impressive, and insightful! Wow. Matty excellent vid thx!

Great advice here! Thanks for watching.

@@martasoto3403 I got many more smart with more beard in 11 months, trust me. 🙃
Also my 3 minutes start with the first contact. As my area of application is so small it is just one or two swift brushes.
Great advice!!! And yes it oxidizes… it’s actually it’s whole function is to react to oxygen. So sealing it up is advised.
LOL
At 115 the beard should be white 🤷🏻♂️

Please let me know what you think...
I don't know what you think about this idea, but it would be cool to watch a video where people sent you pictures of their beard, style or whatever regarding beard and then you reacted to them and explain maybe some tips or things you would do to make them look better, cleaner, etc.
That’s not a bad idea! Let me put some thought into it!
Matty, if a man were to follow this technique you did, how often roughly would you say they should keep doing it?
I’m no expert but I’d guess it’s probably different for everyone, just whenever you feel that it looks like it’s time to re apply
So just for men is safe for beard?
@@TMH78 Yes, they make products specifically for beards
I love Just For Men..but it has been taken off market😞now searching for a similar product.
What about a redhead & red beard? I'm having difficulty finding a color that is close.
I use henna to dye my nearly white beard back to its normal black/brown, and it works a treat, is very forgiving in its application, and doesn’t irritate my skin. Or also creates a nice rich depth of natural looking color variations.
How long do you wait after dyeing ? Is there any particular brand do you use ?
i used henna for years until two things happened.
You should demonstrate how to blend color with a fully gray beard.

Hell, yes, you are… Wear it proudly
I use that same J4M beard product to color my eyebrows! Been doing it since 2020 & I’m female so it’s NOT ‘Just for Men.
Wait I'm confused. Why didn't you stop after the permanent color?
This is great advice! Thanks for sharing that!
I was dying my beard but man what ever is in it gives me a rash and it burns I'm just going to go gray
@@eloygameno379 never worth it… allergies are no joke. Grey looks cool too!
Yes, please for a video on trimmers and clippers.
I've been using the just for men permanent colour for a while and learned a lot of what you spoke about in the video by making a lot of mistakes. I would've appreciated this video a lot when I first started colouring my beard, your tips will still be appreciated though. :)
A quick question: I looked up the semi-permanent colour you used, branded as the "Control GX".
A gray beard is sooo awesome. I cant wait until my whole beard is white.
Agreed! Me too
@@SitkaHowlz To go white you need to bleach and then put a toner on the beard to get the brass out of the hair... You need to know what your doing when bleaching your beard. You can burn your face. I watched other YT vids on bleaching hair. Also, what toner to use. Good Luck...
You must be very young. I promise when you get older like myself you'll think differently. I'm 60 and I'm not ready to look like Santa...😉
Got the best barbering of my life done at your location in Vancouver, BC. Been thinking about that cut for years.
Seems like I'm 4 years late leaving a comment lol. I used JFM for years and then one day I had the same problem,it burned and left me with weeping sores. Grizzly Mountain works for me. Unless I use the organic base it leaves my beard purplish but I've been using it for years and I think I've prefected my technique and it works for me
Good video. I switch it up from time to time. Coloring it for a month and then the next month leaving it all gray.
Great tips! Thanks for watching!
I'm just a guy with brown hair and a blonde mustache with a blonde and red beard. So I just color it so it all looks uniform. Looks a million times better.
If you all want a tip on how to blend it, put a liiiiittle bit in your eyebrows and up your sideburns.
Great tip
Nice video only have a couple questions that doesn’t get mentioned in the video. When is it safe to use a heated brush after coloring my beard. And when to use any beard oil and butter?
Is mustache focused grooming could be a good video subject? There is at least potential for historical side note nerderies!
Personally, I have a full beard and a hard time keeping consistent results under my nose. I only know the comb controlled upward clipper trim and it doesn't fit my face shape, unless I want a Tom Select's brush type finish.
Great idea! I’ll work on it.
I want to color my gray beard to white color. What do you suggest? Thanks
Really top quality video and very informative. I assume as the hair grows out, to maintain the look it’s a repeat of what you just did?
I look forward to the trimmer vs clipper video…..thank you for your hard work, love your videos.
Applying Petroleum Jelly or a Heavy Moisturizer or Hair Conditioner on the skin will prevent or reduce staining.
Agreed!
Hey Matty great video, this was really explained well, thanks for sharing! Can you do a video how to line it up your beard with a straight razor doing it yourself?
I don’t usually use one on myself to be honest. But I bet I could come up with something.
Really good information. Thanks. Now...any tips on how to determine your correct color?
Yeah now that you mention it I did leave that out 🧐
Hey Matty. Is it really permanent? I'm 55 and have a grey Hulk Hogan mustache and trying to grow a beard.
