Thousands of people lined the streets of Tokyo hoping to be among the first to get their hands on Sony Playstation 2 which went on sale on Saturday morning.
One shop in central Tokyo alone counted more than 5,000 people waiting outside on the night before the video consul was due to go on sale.
Japan is the first country where playstation has gone on sale.
It's launch has been much anticipated as the successor to Sony Playstation 1 which took the world market by storm.
Some of Tokyo's usually orderly queues we briefly thrown in confusion in the early hours of Saturday, as computer game enthusiasts jostled to be the first to buy Sony's newly released Playstation 2.
Crowds started to gather outside Tokyo stores on Friday evening, and reached such alarming numbers that the stores had to distribute coupons, guaranteeing the right to buy the highly sought-after game station.
This largely had the desired effect of dispersing the waiting masses until the stores opened around dawn.
Officially the sale of Playstation 2 was due to begin at 7am on Saturday, but this major store in Shinjuku opened its doors two hours earlier.
The new games console has been eagerly anticipated.
Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony's video game unit, plans to sell a million of the $360 Playstation 2 consoles here in its first round of shipments Saturday.
Sony says the Internet home page for advance orders, which opened on February 18, was jammed with as many as 500-thousand hits a minute.
Despite the cold weather of the early March, there was festive mood around town as computer enthusiasts camped out with common purpose.
This shop had prepared 2,000 consoles in store and expect to sell out all by early afternoon.
The shop took on 50 extra shop attendants and 20 additional security guards overnight to take on the rush of customers.
The vast majority of buyers were male, and in their late teens to early twenties.

Back when games didn’t have massive updates every single week that took hours to finish. The good old days.
Yeah but back then if games have fatal bugs then there's no way to fix it. Soul Calibur 3 had a bug where it can wipe the entire memory card. Today it would be easily fixed by simple patch (that wouldn't take hours to download) but back in good old day, you just have take it. Even if they did release revised version, then you'd end up buying the same game twice.

@@cnhnx And 20 years later, some problem still exist on new games. Shocking! Besides, it only happens on certain conditions and definitely didn't stop numerous people from completing the game. Also, you can backup the saves easily. I''ll take that than having to tolerate the craploads of updates, mandatory Day1 patches, bugfixes, dlcs that should be in the game, MTs, lootboxes, etc..

Those beautiful blue launch boxes were like treasure. Still remember when I got my PS2 -- I'd had a used PS1 for a while but had always been a Nintendo kid. Getting a brand new PS2 felt like a step into a larger world. The whole thing felt incredibly futuristic, from the style of the packaging to the console itself, and of course that start-up screen. It was thrilling!

It was a time era where you had not to worry about in game micro transactions and DLC, games that were cutted half their content, you had not to worry about subscription paid services neither. No it was just full games with great content and countless hours to spend, amazing diversity of gameplay experiences. There is no doubt of why it's still the best selling console ever. It was really worth the price it costed and the customer was not getting fooled. Great memories of that period... So much fun
Man seeing this blue box was insane....my uncle knew a buddy who owned the electronic store and got a Japanese version overnighted just for me. Paid 500 bux but I had the console 2 weeks before store release. I felt like a God.
Regardless of the company, I love a new console launch. The build up, the excitement, the thrill of getting that new machine home and setting it up for the first time.... Magic

It feels like a long time ago to me. When PS2 launched a lot of people would still have been renting VHS tapes from Blockbuster, listening to music on cassettes and Minidiscs, using pay phones, taking children to visit pilots in the cockpit before a flight etc.

Was like this here in the U.S....got mine at launch (cause of the crowds, I thought I was going to get jumped and have it stolen from me as I walked out of the mall) and still have it and works perfectly...it was one of if not the best (close tie with PS4) console Sony ever made...was great to have backwards compatibility with all other older PSX games....not like this today...not too many people get excited anymore and it's a shame...

The leap from PS1 to PS2 in graphics were crazy. Finally, after seeing high quality characte models in ONLY cutscenes for over half a decade, finally we could see them in real time gameplay!

That was also the time when devs actually put lots of care and love into their games. Now they’re all being rushed by greedy publishers
They leap in graphic were always crazy between PS1 to PS2 to PS3. At this time, getting new console really felt next gen. Apparently, PS3 is basically the start of the peak graphic, that why we don't see much leap to PS4, and PS5 is basically the same graphic as PS4. I still remember my jaw was drop seeing God of War 3 demo gameplay on PS3 for the first time. That shit was crazy leap from God of War 2 on PS2
One of the happiest days of my life was buying my PS2. I remember this dam machine was nowhere to be found for months after release. But when I finally got my hands on it, boy-oh-boy.
I remember getting my PlayStation 2 around April 2001. It was fairly easy to get 6 months after it launched in the USA 🇺🇸. By that time some good games were available like Onimusha which made it worth owning.
now you have to wait two and a half years to find a new console in store, that's progress

This is why I always buy straight from sony store. As a kid I had a walkman and made my old days fun. Every time I buy sony products, it always improved my lifestyle to more fun days, and I know they invest a big chunk of revenue to improve my future entertaining experience to the next level. Plus, PSVR really helped and saved me during 4 months of quarantine at home in my city living alone. I can connect and play with my nephews remotely. I thank and support sony hehe. Now I can't wait to get ps5.

I was like 4 yrs old back then when it was released.. Ahhh we all are getting old, it's good to have good old memories.
I remember ordering a PS2 hoping to get late 2000. The demand was so high I only got my unit end of March 2001. Ending my high school just before university.
