Our first ascent to the top of Telescope Peak was February, 1972. We used 12 point salewa adjustable Crampons and a aluminum Ice axe. No need for rope. Very icy and windy on the final trek up to the summit. Steep slopes on both sides up the final leg. Then the proverbial signing of the climbers log on the summit. It was windy and cold. Our thermostat read minus -10 F with the wind chill factoring in. So cold that one of our polaroid cameras froze up the shutter mechanism. Great views of Death Valley Below. Subsequently through the years we climbed Telescope Peak three more times, twice in the winter and one in the spring. Back in those days the Wildrose Ranger station was still occupied, but closed during the heavy winter period. I remember also signing in at the Wildrose Station as a courtesy for the Ranger that we were heading up the road to hike up to Telescope Peak.
Awesome job! I've been following you for a while and am proud of your journey and your progress. I'm so glad that you did not talk yourself out of finishing the hike, and not only that, being honest about it with your viewers. It would have been so easy to leave that info out, but you didn't, and it makes your channel, and your journey, so much more real for us. I also love your insights that you add into your insta posts as well as your videos. It makes them so inspiring and much deeper than just a journal of your hiking. You are an inspiration to me. Thank you for the effort you put into your videos.
Hello Christine, thank you for sharing another beautifully filmed video. All the best of good things to you Dear. I look forward to your next exciting adventures. 🤗
wow! . . . deep thoughts . . . beautiful scapes . . . raptors circling overhead with breathtaking scenes and music that could not be more relative, captivating and mesmerizing! soooooo well done:) . . . thank you for taking me along
Wow great video. I am so glad that you got out there and completed the hike. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It looks like you did a lot of reflecting up there. I hope you found what you were looking for.
Another beautiful video with great stills. The shots at dusk were particularly nice, as well as the stars at night. I liked your monologues too. Solo hiking is really different, especially when you're in an area with few people. I did a one week solo backpack in Yosemite many years ago. My companion was a John Muir book about his explorations in the area. Between that and a journal I kept, I never got lonely.
Wow, you did an amazing job shooting the footage on this trip. Your narrating was quite inspirational. You looked very comfortable for it being your first solo trip. I love solo camping/backpacking myself. I have recently come across your videos and enjoy what you do. Many kudos to you👍👍stay safe
Beautiful video!! Congrats on your first solo! I'm (Barbara) planning my first solo hopefully soon! You are looking fantastic and happy! Thanks so much for sharing your adventure! I think this is your best video to date!!!
Great Video. I started watching your video's when I started the 2019 six pack of peaks challenge and been a fan ever since. Keep up the adventures and keep on trekking.👍💪
This hike is on my bucket list early this year. I was going to hike over a 5 day Thanksgiving weekend but it snow heavy two days before that. I hike solo all the time. It take getting use to. But since you're doing the PCT you will have a lot of nights alone.
Everything about this video is fabulous! The photography is simply spectacular. The landscape I typically hike in is very green (think Oregon Cascades, and the PCT “green tunnel”).... You’ve inspired me to put this area/hike on my to do list! I also loved your monologue and reflections. Thank you for being so real!
Awesome Production! And one of my favorite places in CA. I see you did the extra tough version by starting at charcoal kilns. I do it the lazy way by camping in truck at Mahogany Flats and day looping to Telescope peak.
I hope you continue to solo hike. Nothing wrong with having company sometimes but solo hiking lets you really connect with your surroundings without any distractions, which in my opinion is the true essence of experiencing nature. Of course a good book doesn't hurt. Loved the ravens at the end of the video! They are my favorite hiking companions, lol. Keep up the great work!
This is the first Death Valley video i have watched. You did great. I don't know if i would be able to do a overnight solo. My mind would wander throught the worst cast scenarios and i would be terrified. I admire your courage.
11:06 thank you for sharing those views. Being outdoors is the best work out (I know it is arguable, as some people dont consider it a work out or dont see as the best one. But anything is arguable.). Solo backpacking is a huge step... into something new for yourself. Please be safe.
I am looking forward to watching you hike the PCT. I know it is nerve racking hiking your first solo. I carry a small fog horn that is light but will scare and animal away. Maybe that would make you feel a little safer.
Great video! We had a wonderful time when we visited Death Valley! Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to hike Telescope Peak as we went during the winter and there was too much snow. Looking forward to the next video as I have subscribed. Also, where do you get your music? I’m always looking for music for my channel and videos. By the way, I also have some videos from our visit to Death Valley if you want to check them out.
@@nomadunknown4766 Thanks for answering. I used the height of the Dash and found a tent same height, light weight, on outlet sale at REI last wek and can get in with out crawling! I set it up in 5 minutes easy and roomy. My aging joint issues have really kept me a prisoner to van camping and I will never get to the scenic backcountry for even one night in the Sierra if I can't hike in. I'm practicing at home walking now and will add my pack with weight in stages soon. I know there are lovely one night hikes..I just have to be able to get in and out and sleep on the ground! Your videos are encouraging.
We are visiting DV next week during the Thanksgiving long weekend. We plan on hiking Telescope Peak. Any advice ... dress? Weather? Length? Etc... thanks!
I didn't realize that was your first solo, I thought you'd done several solo's by now. But congratulations, you did it! One of my least favorite things with backpacking is to carry water, it's so heavy. But for an overnighter I guess I could do it. Watching you lift your pack, I could tell it was heavy. I enjoy solo backpacking but admittedly, it's nice to have someone around at night because it can get a bit boring being alone when you're done for the day. It was hard reading the wording at the end but I stopped the vid, then was able to read it. I see it was a quote from Steve Jobs. He had a unique perspective of life and death, but it was mere human philosophy because he left God out of the equation, so he totally missed it. Life and death must be understood in light of who God is and what he reveals about himself to us in the Bible. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, all other fears should pale in comparison.
I want to do this hike but I've read that it has mountain lions. Are they very hostile and or easy to accidentally run into? I will be a tourist so wont be able to bring a gun😂

You're never a failure for trying. Never forget it. Those that fail are those that never try at all.
This is my new favorite video of yours. Beautifully shot and edited. Love it!
Thank you 😊
Wonderful words of wisdom! Thank you!
Amazing shots! Thanks for all the work to share it with us! 🌲🌲😊🌲🌲

That is wonderful to hear! Thank you!

Thanks Diane! It was a good trip!
I'm planning to hike this end of November and came across your vid. Like the vibe of your video. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on such a wonderful accomplishment! Looking fabulous and I bet you feel even better!
Thank you! I’m feeling like a new woman!
Very cool! 👍. So well done.
found your channel through your Aunts Zion video! you've inspired me to start my own hiking videos.

Everything about this video was amazing!!!!!
Thank you! That means so much coming from you!
That sunset was awesome and then the stars - WOW!
What a wonderful video! Those nighttime stars are just WOW!
I just got my PCT 2020 start date so I might do this hike as a training hike.
It'll get you ready for the early climb into Mt. Laguna!
Enjoyed your video of Telescope Peak. I hope to do this hike in about a year when I retire.
Another amazing adventure! Beautiful scenery and peaceful serenity.
Thank you!
I love solo hikes! I enjoy hiking with friends too, but solo hiking is the best! I just found your channel and subscribed immediately! Hike on!
Thank you! I was pretty relaxed, just a little bored and lonely but it's good for me to challenge myself in that way.
Beautiful area - great job doing a solo!!
Great job and I learn so much from you. You are inspiring. Thanks.
Aw.. wonderful!
Beautiful!
Fantastic!

Thank you! Best of luck with your solo, Barbara!!
I don't know how I found your video but this was so inspirational. Thank you so much ❤️
Great video. I so enjoy hiking and when I can't, I enjoy hiking videos. Yours are really improving and I love this one!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback.

WOW! Love your videos! And you may have felt alone out there but you have allowed all of us to be with you., so now you’re never alone. Thank you 🙂
Thank you Allen.

looked like a fun trip cool video!
This is so great Christine!!! Completing your first solo backpacking trip was such a huge accomplishment and inspires me to take on one for myself.
Thanks girlie! 💙 But... don’t go solo... take me with you!!!
@@nomadunknown4766 Haha, yes, ok we can go together! Then we won't have to carry books cause we'll have bantery conversations instead.
great workout .
I see you hiked that gnarly road up to the actual trailhead instead of driving too.
Thats some road.
Very nice video. You inspire me to do this hike!
Love all your words of wisdom. I'm gearing up for my first solo hike in my 50s - wish me luck! Beautiful hike!
Good luck!!!
Me too!
You have such a beautiful way with words Christine. "...stare down your fear, and live a life of extraordinary adventure." Words to live by!
Thank you Maryann 💙

Also, can you tell us the date you hiked this area. This information is most helpful to those unfamiliar with the area.
Thank you Nancy! This was in October 2019.
Awesome Production! And one of my favorite places in CA. I see you did the extra tough version by starting at charcoal kilns. I do it the lazy way by camping in truck at Mahogany Flats and day looping to Telescope peak.
Yeah... my vehicle would have no problem driving up to Mahogany Flats but I did the walk for the exercise. Kind of crazy! Thank you for watching!
I like your quote at about 13:00. It makes perfect sense.😎
Beautiful video, landscape and music👌🏻greetings from saxony🤗
Moved me to tears

There is definitely more solo hiking planned in my future.
Very nice! I keep saying i;m going to get up there to Telescope. Crazy that we can see it from our local mountains like Mt. Baldy and San G.
I’d have to say that it’s one of my favorite hikes. Definitely do it when you get the chance.
your hair looks great for solo backpacking!
I always watch cooking videos for relaxation. But I guess I have another type of videos to watch and relax to now
This is the first Death Valley video i have watched. You did great. I don't know if i would be able to do a overnight solo. My mind would wander throught the worst cast scenarios and i would be terrified.
I admire your courage.
Thanks Daphne! It’s not for everyone but if you wanted to do it, practice putting away your fears.
40 LBS?!?! Damn, girl! You're strong! haha Thanks for sharing the views
Stuff like this is why I CrossFit. 😆
Day hiked this peak and 2 other adjacent peaks in 2016. Great trip.

Worthy!
I can't wait to do my first solo. I think I want to do a Big Pine to Lake #2 or Garnet Lake.
👍👍

Beautifully photographed and excellent sound track selections. What model REI tent are you using? It appears to have a lot of head room.

awesome job. what month was this? i want to climb telescope. btw, bristlecone pines are the longest living non-clonal organisms on the planet

I think it'll be pretty cold. Definitely check the forecast because it could quite possibly snow! Enjoy!

Lesson learned. Don't die a slow death by being a coach potatoes. Go out there and explore. Start living and not over working.
What were the round structures at the beginning?
Those are charcoal kilns. They were used to make charcoal that was used to support mining operations.
Just wondering who do the filming while you are walking up hill?
Hi Jerry, I actually carry a tripod so I can set up my camera to get those shots.
So you have to walk up hill and come back for your tripod and camera every time you make a shot? Wow, it’s a lot of work!
I want to do this hike but I've read that it has mountain lions. Are they very hostile and or easy to accidentally run into? I will be a tourist so wont be able to bring a gun😂
I wouldn’t worry too much about mountain lions. :)
How much water did you take with you?
I believe I had 4.5 L
Pretty girl greetings froom south america colombia
