- Hiking my first Colorado 14er Longs Peak, quite possibly the scariest hike in Colorado it is located in Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside Estes Park. This 15 mile overnight hike was my first solo backpacking trip EVER and one of the most challenging solo hikes I have done. For more on Colorado check out my blog: alicesadventuresonearth.com/h...

Have you ever visited Colorado? What kind of adventure would you do in the Rocky Mountains?
This was wonderful Alice. You are making great videos!! Nope no been in Colorado, I do only bushcraft in Scandinavia for now - but maybe one day! I would enjoy nature (: Thanks Alice!! All the best from stories and film!
I've been in the San Juan Mountains in the fall, when colors are gorgeous. I am hoping to return this fall.
@@storiesfilm-kristianwolski7950 Thanks so much for watching. I love Scandinavia and hope to get back there in the next few year.s
@Ramses Morales That sounds wonderful I hope you get to come and visit it one day.
T B That’s so awesome! I love colorado. Wish I could live there for good, do you have a favorite colorado hike?
We backpacked Longs for our 25th anniversary. Sunset at the Boulder field made the rock look like they were on fire. Longs was our first 14er back in 2006. This year we're celebrating 40th anniversary and we submitted 23 14ers so far. Keep on hiking.
Backpacked longs yesterday exiting 14 hour trip. No video will ever do that journey justice.
Impressive
did u survived?
Wonderful!! I’m still looking for my adventure partner ❤
When you are old and unable to climb someday, you'll be glad you made this video. It made me miss the days I used to go hiking. I can still do it, just live in an area that has nothing to do. Good job and be safe.
I love how you admit that you're scared and you want to turn back but you keep going. 🥺💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽🥰 you're so awesome and so inspiring! thank you Alice!
It’s so comforting to see another woman hiking by herself, especially such a big one.
A big woman or a big hike?
Maybe organize a team for future hikes. You proved you can do it. 👏🙏🙏
My favorite part is how much it terrifies men. :-)
That was the best video of climbing Longs I've ever seen. It actually documented the whole hike and put everything in perspective.
Thank you so much. Really appreciate that. Share with a friend if you can :)
Yeah, I have seen many longs peak, but this actually gives a perspective of steep climbs.
@@AliceFordAdventures Great Video! I hike a lot there when I need to be with the lord in prayer! 🙏
The whole hike?
Wow. The fact that it’s a 14er, your first solo backpacking and it’s fifteen miles is very impressive. That is a huge accomplishment no joke. Too bad about the cell phone. I’m very, very jealous. Climbing a 14er in Colorado is something I would like to do one day. Congratulations Alice.
Thank you, I hope you make it there to climb one, someday.
This isn't most people's first.
Got this as one of my first climbs in the 70s. Boulder camping was not available so it was a very long day hike. Started before sunrise ended after dark. One of the best things I ever did.
Climbed Longs Peak in Aug 2005. 5 started the climb. 2 finished. I was 53 yrs old and it was a bucket list for me. Started from the parking lot at 0400 and back at 1800. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. And yes I had done many prep hikes in preparing for it. I admire your independence and adventurous spirit. Keep going!
12:48 your honesty is priceless. Wow you *did* it, of course you did!
I cannot believe that it was not wildly windy at summit!
Yep, nothing like going solo. So many benefits🦋 thanks for sharing this hike. Sorry about your cell phone.
Solo is such a different experience but one I truly love. Thanks so much for watching this journey
The whole video is amazing! Mad respect to you for pushing through!
If you think you want to do it again start about 2am on a full moon. You want to summit before dawn. Sunrise is awesome and it's really cool to see the shadow of Long's to the west.
Would love to try it again one day as a day hike. But I really loved camping out. I enjoy my sleep 😴 😆
Thank you for sharing. My friends and I did the same hike in one day, started our hike at midnight, reached the summit around noon. Scary and beautiful! On the way down, I almost fell near the trough and then we got caught in a storm after the Keyhole...rained, snowed, hailed, and lightning all around us. When you could feel your hair rising and falling with every lightning strike and at the edge of the Boulder field, you never realize how fast you can run across boulders. We later read that 14 hikers had to be rescued from that storm. I miss Longs. There is a quote that I’m paraphrasing “When people ask what it was like climbing a mountain, I could write a story, draw a picture, or write a song about it, but you’ll never understand it. You are on the outside looking in. You’ve got to experience it to actually understand it. “
Love the quote. I am so glad you and your party made it out of the lightning zone. There’s a reason they say to be out of there by noon. Thanks for sharing your story
Honestly massive respect the fact that you did this as your first 14er and first backpacking trip... insane. That’s a class 3 14er. Pretty difficult studf
Thank you. I hike solo a lot and have done some higher peaks. Camping certainly helped it would have been a hard day hike for me
I hiked/climbed Longs Peak in 1983, I’m now 75. Wonderful video, brought back memories. Keyhole rock hut exactly the same. Thank you
About the same time as me! And I'm also 75! That hut is a memorial to Agnes Vail, who died attempting a winter ascent.
Wow!! I climbed it that year too...3rd Friday in August. Never a line back then.
I was there 40 years ago. The hut was missing its door and full of snow. Glad to see nothing's changed. lol. I remember thinking: what's the use of a hut in such a condition? But that's typical of American wilderness. In Europe they would have a bed and breakfast up there.
@@robertpearson9137 that would have been the cabin over at Chasm Lake. It was still in use through the seventies, I believe. The Agnes Vail hut is just a small emergency shelter.
this was amazing. really enjoyed how the video carried the emotions and intensity involved during the hike!
Thank you so much Andrew, I am so glad you enjoyed it.
Definitely the most in-depth, picturesque and informative video of climbing Long's that I've seen. I climbed this behemoth in 2018. Such an amazing experience. Thank you so much for creating this. Well done!
Thank you so much Mike. Congrats on the climb yourself
Great video, what a gorgeoustwo days you had!. That was the scariest climb I've ever done. We started at 2:30am and finished around 5:30pm in pouring down rain. But I am so glad I did it!
Did you start the trail head at 230 or from the bolder field?
@@jasperZoeChloe trail head
I climbed Long’s Peak twice in the early 1970s . Back then, the National Park had cables installed on the mountain side past the Keyhole; the cables were several hundred yards in length and were placed very close to the edge of the vertical face on the east side of the Peak. Here the mountain side was very, very smooth. This placement provided a spectacular view of the mountain’s vertical face and the several 1000 foot drop. That was really terrifying!! I think the Park removed the cables because of the hazardous position for climbers. We then descended on the “backside” (west) of the mountain. Long’s was my favorite of all the Colorado 14ers. Your video was terrific. Thank you.
I live in Boulder, am 66 yo and hike longs peak every year.
Thats fantastic! I hope I am still hiking it when I am 66
I live in Boulder!
Awesome!!
Did it in 1981. Old man now. Like looking at it from my hotel in Louisville when in town for business. Two boy scouts dies up there in 1981.
@@ronaldmcdonald3965 Awesome that you got to experience it once.
So proud of you! It looked terrifying at the narrows! I was here watching the video and rooting for you!
Thank you so much! That last part sure did have me on edge. So glad I pushed through though.
My grandpa was a professor in Fort Collins in the 60s/70s and he required all his doctoral students to hike Long’s Peak before he would pass them (of course they didn’t HAVE to but... it was encouraged)
Thanks for the memories! I have been to the top of Long’s Peak 3 times twice by the mountaineer route (Keiners) and the last time the keyhole route. I believe it was almost 25 years ago. I loved seeing the hike and I remember several spots on the route. It was nice to reminisce. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Great video. Longs is a heck of a first fourteener to choose, nice work! It’s absolutely the most memorable hike I’ve ever done
This is amazing! The last climb on the Narrows looks incredible!
When you video yourself hiking, you have to retrace your steps numerous times to retrieve the camera, so you did a little more walking than everyone else, great views!
john young Yes that’s very true! Thank you

Super excited for this one!
That ascent looks exhausting! Great video and editing. Inspiring for sure to see you get past the scramble to the top. Very brave. Congrats !
Thank you SO much for sharing this. I am a former avid RMNP hiker who suffered a back injury a few years ago, so this is my hiking now. It's great!
I live 45 miles east of this Magnificent Mountain, I can actually see it daily from my backyard. I've hiked it many times, and it is absolutely breathtaking from the top. I love this Hike, and I recommend it to all adventurous people. Be cautious and take necessary precautions to avoid mishaps. Such a major accomplishment when you reach the summit .
my heart is calling out to venture into such solo adventures, thanks so much for this!! 😊
Glad to hear you’re so welcome
The best video on YT for hiking this trail. I'm an old guy of 65 and have spent a lot of time on the trails of Colorado and had to laugh when you asked"what the hell am I doing?" I have asked myself that same question many times, on many hikes. Great job young lady. You have a new subscriber!
Thank you so much! That means a lot and I truly appreciate it.
Some really nice footage, Alice. Thanks so much for making it happen. Memories for a lifetime!
Beautiful, love Colorado!
You are an inspiration. To do all this hike by yourself. Good for you!!!!
Congratulations, Alice! Not just on hiking your first Colorado 14er - but also on making this awesome video along the way! We've been based with a view of the distinct Longs Peak for years and wondered what it might look like up there. Now we do. Thanks! :)
My late mother always asked me to climb mountains. "Even if you go to a difficult place where energy is consumed, don't go to a dangerous place", "It is thin, but it is wise to enjoy it for a long time" ^^ - From Seoul Korea
I’ve been to RMNP twice. My kids were too young to make this hike on my 1st visit. On my 2nd visit my travel partner didn’t want to make it.
WANTED:New travel partner.
Alice, you’re my new hero. Thank you for sharing this.
That scramble did look intimidating! Awesome views!
It certainly was ;)
We always hit the trailhead around 3 am so we could get off the top before the summer thunderstorms. One beautiful place!
Wow, that hike is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Beautiful the lady, and the mountains trail. 🥰🥰
Enjoyed watching the video, you're just amazing, well done.
Not only your first 14er but one of the toughest. Congrats. Loved the footage on the back side especially the narrows. Well done.
Thanks so much! I wish I had shot more over there through the trough but I was so thrown off from losing my phone.
Very nice. I’ve climbed it 3 times but many years ago. Brought back nice memories. It’s one the hardest 14’neers. You mentioned the distance but the elevation gain is huge too. 5000 ft. Beautiful weather. Always a little dicey in the summer. Surprised there weren’t a lot more people. Very popular hike. Well done
Nicely done. So much so that I was clutching the couch as you ventured through the narrows.
Thanks for joining me there, I needed the support ha. It was scary but I hope to do it again sometime
Stunning Views
Breathing hike and an amazing views. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, just wow!! Loved the video, like others are saying, you did really good on documenting your journey. You're gutsy!
Thank you so much!
That’s so cool you did this. I’m a 32 yr old guy and I’m just getting used to being alone in the woods when it’s dark. It’s creepy AF
Well I am with you there. I certainly feel more comfortable in wide open areas like the Boulderfield or in the desert than I do in the deep woods. I still have yet to camp solo in the forest, but I will let you know when I do.
I just really laughed out loud.
Stop listening to those greentext innawoods threads lel
Super creepy right!! I'll be packing that's a fact haha
I did this hike in 2009! Thanks for bringing back so many good memories! Those open top outhouses at the Boulder field were kinda weird! I had the most difficulty getting by the huge bolder at the top of the trough, I believe it’s called the choke stone. It took me numerous attempts to get past that spot. Thanks!
Thank you for this - brought back a lot of memories. Not just the great shots, but the honest reactions to different sections. Most of us normal humans felt the same way!
Great video! Thanks for showing the process of such a treacherous hike
Wow! All I can say is... AMAZING! Good for you for making it!! Sorry about your phone though...R.I.P....lol! Really great video! So glad I made the premier! 🤗😊
Thank you so much Angela. Really appreciate you watching it with me
Most people that set out on this hike don't finish. It's grueling. Big props to carrying that pack the whole way!
You can tell it was hard to climb wearing her backpack, as the weight almost knocked her off balance several times (what saved her is that she remembered to keep leaning forward). Let's just say most girls aren't smiling and laughing this much on their first backpacking trip.
Wow! I had that thought going through my head a hundred times watching this!
Wow that was a beautiful hike and a great video. I like how honest you are about what’s tough or daunting - very real! And I can’t believe how much of it you had to yourself, or nearly so anyway!
Congratulations! I hiked Longs with my son. Did the exact same journey. I lost my nerve 2 times but made it. The hike down was equally treacherous. Make it back to Boulder Field camp by 11. Off the mountain by mid afternoon in time for PM showers and a beer. BTY, there was ton's of people traffic on our hike. Though you did this by yourself, following the traffic helps a newbie.
That made my palms sweat just watching you lol. We hike some in Colorado but the most difficult trail we have done is like walking down the sidewalk compared to this. Great job !
I'm watching this in the middle of winter. OMG I need nature soooo baddd!!!
Great video, my first’14er was Longs back in 98. Did not know what i was getting into when a friend suggested climbing it the night before we did it. I have done several others since, but nothing compares to Longs. Thanks for sharing.
That route looked crazy! You're a rock star for completing it! You should check the hiking forums for that area and post that you lost your phone. I bet someone would be able to find and return it to you.
It was pretty crazy. I had another hiker trek down with me and look as it fell far from the trail and I assume into a ravine somewhere. That’s a good idea though. It’s got my logo on it and my number in case someone ever does find it. I took some great photos of the Elk and a lot of other videos that never made there way to the cloud
Strong work! I like those little side shots you included. I grew up under that gorgeous peak, and have never completed that trek as you have.
Great video and it was like we're on the trip with you - not into summiting mountains but you made it fun to watch and engaging! Great job!
Thank you
My son his best friend graduate high school this year in Kansas and we plan on taking hopefully once a year hiking trips to Colorado to hit new trails each year
That should be awesome! Wish my daughter hiked with me 😫
Just have to ask again and again
Good for you, young lady, that was a treat for me, I climbed it about 45 years ago just once, a one day hike, but this is the first video I've watched of a climb and with the modern image stabilized HD/4K cameras, it's almost like being there again. It's a "must do" hike for anyone who lives in Colorado and is able to do it.
Way to go Alice! You rocked it! Thanks for sharing
Girl, hats off to you!!! I just did my 10th 14er here in CO and it was Torrey's via the Kelso ridge (also class 3 ). I completely identify with the way you were feeling up there. There were so many times I wanted to turn around, but you can't, it's a one way route, and I really wanted to conquer the fear. After 3 hours, I summitted prouder of myself than I have ever been. Good for you for getting Long's, the final stretch terrifies me, you crushed it!!
Thank you for taking all of us along to share some of your “firsts.” I look forward to following along on your next adventure. Be careful and stay safe.
Thank you so much
I’m from Boulder County, and Longs is definitely not a beginner 14. You did great!
Doran Stark It sure isn’t for beginners I’ve done much higher mountains in other places so I figured I could handle it ;) but it was certainly a challenge
I grew up in Leadville Co. I had the pleasure of climbing both Mt. Elbert (highest mountain in Colorado) and Mt. Massive. Both of which were right in my backyard. Between snowboarding, hiking, camping, hunting, Leadville was a fantastic place to grow up in.
This such an incredible video!!!! Beautifully shot! That hike is a bucket list for me. Congrats, you killed it!! ✌️✌️🤘🤘
Thank you
Congrats! That's a lot of work in allowing us to hike w you. Bravo!
Thank you! Yes it sure is :)
My cabin is just a couple of miles from the trailhead. I’m nowhere near in your kind of shape so I really enjoyed seeing top vicariously. Air’s pretty thin at 14,000 plus feet. You did amazingly well, especially if you don’t live at high altitude to begin with.
Happy for you. Congrats. Excellent vid.
I also did that hike solo to the top and absolutely love it. Nice to see the mountain again in a different angle thanks!
Thank you for that Alice. I climbed Longs 42 years ago and didn't get past the narrows because it started to snow. I've always wondered what the rest of the climb was like. Now I know. I did hike to Chasm lake a few times to go fishing with a park ranger friend of mine. Even that hike is substantial. If you want a nice leisurely one day 14er try Grays and Torres.
Thank You Patty. I wanted to stop at chasm Lake but was afraid I would run out of steam for the rest of the hike. I plan to do Grays this summer.
Gonna be epic!
Great video, thanks for sharing! The video footage is of excellent quality and accurately depicts the hike and difficulty, in my opinion. I have done Longs Peak 3 times, and it is one of my favorites for sure. It's the only 14er I have repeated.
Your courage is so inspiring. What a gorgeous video. Keep up the amazing work.
Having lived in Estes Park and worked across Hwy 7 from Longs Peak for 5 years, PLEASE, PLEASE, OH PLEASE DO NOT climb Longs Peak solo, ESPECIALLY if you are not an EXTREMELY experienced climber. 5 or 6 people die on Longs Peak each year due to weather or falls. A 10 Mountain Division squad had to be pulled off of Longs Peak by helicopter while I was there.
I can’t get past the fact that she’s hiking in jean shorts-if the weather changes, cotton kills.
You guys are too uptight. I hiked up Pike's Peak in flip flops.
@@KFrost-fx7dt Pike's Peak has a ROAD up to the top. Long's Peak has a spot where, for you safety, you have to CRAWL on you hands and knees. You would likely end of a "recovery mission" if you attempted Long's Peak.
@@pauleveritt3388 Long's isn't that dangerous, it just has a lot of traffic many of whom are tourists from sea level so there is a greater odds of accidents happening. You're far more likely to die on the drive there.
Wow, really amazing hiking trip! Thx for sharing and bringing us along ;-)
Thanks so much for watching! It was a fun one
Great job on summitting. That is scary looking.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Really good video,Alice! Glad you had fun. Been up to the Keyhole a few times, but never past there. Well, be safe out there,!!
This is how sasquatch catches people out on their own in the wilderness and you and up on David Paulides missing show
missing 411!
Totally relate to 'what the hell are you doing' thinking at 11:28.' The mind game of every solo climb is the worst part.
Haha yes that it sooo true. I’ve turned around on a few hikes in other countries when weather came in but I’m really glad I pushed through on this one
I love hiking and have made progress on my fear of ledges but not sure I could bring myself to do that... Pretty sure I'd pass out first. Even watching you do it made me physically nervous. I really admire how brave you are and appreciate how well you captured the trail.
Beautiful hike! Congratulations on making it and not turning around!
Awesome, awesome video!!
Thanks so much.
You're so so lucky Alice, i wish i could do things you do & good for you!
Sean B158 Thanks Sean, I hope you can get out and hike someday and explore more
I'm watching this from my sofa today. It was 1975, August that year when I and a group of young people about to enter college were comrades on the two day hike up to Longs Peak.
I took hundred of photos with my dads 36 mm camera capturing many beautiful memories throughout the time we were in Colorado.
Thanks for sharing and brining back to life some great memories. Well done!
That's probably the best Long's Peak video I have seen. Good Job!
Thank you so much!
Wow, you did great! I’m terrified of heights and you had moments in the same spots as I did. There is a reason that the Park Rangers and SAR teams call this a climb and not a hike. You put a lot of work into this video and it shows. Good work all around!
I'm not terrified of heights. I'm terrified of 🐻
I just did that hike, I felt like I was back there! I stopped at the Keyhole and let my hubby summit. I def got a little woozy even just looking at some of those angles you shot! 🤣 Amazing job!! 👏
Thanks Jess. I still don’t know how I made it up that last section. Great job too. The view from the keyhole sure is something! You picked a great spot to rest
Probably the best vid of Longs Peak I’ve seen. Well done and congrats!
Thank you so much 😊
In the 80’s I hiked this mountain. When I arrived at the trough there was an Amish women in a bonnet, ankle length blue floral dress ,and very sensible black shoes . Up until then I fancied myself a mountain climber.
I was born and grew up in Loveland. My oldest brother has climbed longs several times. I’m pretty sure it’s his favorite 14er. As commenters have said though it’s definitely not a hike that should be done alone.
I have literally seen a marmot try to drag someone's backpack away in the boulder field. The backpack was more than he could handle and he only made it a couple feet.
😆
Congrats, your brave, I turned away after the Key Hole…stunning view at the summit. I feel you weren’t alone, when solo hiking, your always feeding off the energy of the people in front of you…nice work!
Way to push thru the fear, and reach the summit. Congrats on summiting Longs Peak, and great video!
