I think you are confusing James Caan with Dennis Hopper who was in Blue Velvet. James Caan was Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Kathy won an Oscar for this. She was largely unknown previously. Stephen King wrote the novel Delores Clairborne with her in mind after seeing this. She played the lead role in the film. Director Ron Reiner's early work is all fantastic. Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men.

The fact that this movie is 2 actors in 1 room for like I dunno, 80% of the runtime, often gets lost because of just how nail biting the story is. Really unreal work from Bates and Caan, and the director Rob Reiner. He and King teamed up for one more film that maybe you'll get to, "Stand By Me".

The movie is a little more literal, but King has talked about the novel being a metaphor for his drug addiction at the time and a sort of cry for help. Cocaine was "his biggest fan" and alternated between making him feel good and feel trapped, but always kept him writing. At a certain point he wasn't sure if he could write without it. The end of the novel is Paul, a year or so after finally being free of Annie, discovering he can still write and love writing.
I forget which book it was (Cujo maybe?), but King's addiction was so bad at the time it was written, he has no recollection of writing the book. Like any.
Wow. That’s fascinating - I never knew that layer of story was in there, what a great way to express that struggle. Thanks for sharing that man.

The passages in the book about waiting in pain for the meds is great. He describes the pain coming and going like the tide coming in and out, his broken legs are rocks that are either exposed because the tide is low (no drugs) then covered by the waves (high on pills).
Misery has hands down one of the most cathartic climaxes ever in a horror movie.

As uncomfortable (And brilliantly done) as the hobbling scene is, watching you drop the mic, pick it up, then immediately drop it again made me laugh my ass off.

Kathy Bates is a national treasure. It's honestly a crime that she only has 1 Oscar and 3 other nominations. Every role she's done has been great. For god's sake she should have been nominated for her role in The Waterboy.
So glad that you enjoyed this, but I do have one correction. This was James Caan, and it was Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet. Both are great actors, and I can see how they can be confused with each other. Kathy Bates actually won the best actor oscar for this role.
James Caan is in "The Godfather," which you should also watch, soon.

Yeah, Dennis Hopper is a good actor in his own right, but he has a tendency to chew the scenery, which is something James Caan doesn’t do.
I love it when people go into Misery completely blind. The whole thing is just one big panic attack, whew...
It's kind of surreal to see how most movie 'reactors' on RUclips haven't seen (or ever heard of) some of the best movies ever made.
@@ChucksCherubs3 It's not that strange, though. A lot of these movies are older now so it's at least plausible they haven't been seen by everyone.
@@deathwitheponine I know, but a lot of 'reactors' seem to be really into cinema, so it's surprising to me that they have limited their viewing experiences only to the latest releases, until now. I've always loved movies, and growing up, I would watch any movie that looked good, regardless of when it was filmed. Maybe it's just me. ;)
@@ChucksCherubs3 how old are you though? Misery is 30 years old. Been a lot of movies between then and now. Either way I still like watching people watch movies so it doesn’t really matter to me.
Came back to edit this because it sounds kind of pretentious so I wanted to add I’m not trying to be ageist at all, just pointing out the time. Hell, one of my favorite movies, 1957’s An Affair to Remember, has a grand total of 1 reaction video on RUclips, which is just sad as it’s a great film.
@@deathwitheponine No worries, I'm 55. I was lucky enough to see Misery in theatres. My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz from 1939, so to me it really doesn't matter whether a movie is 30 or 80 years old, those are just numbers. A good movie is a good movie. :)
When this novel came out my dad was in the hospital and asked me for a book and I gave him this without thinking about how the villain is a nurse……needless to say he wasn’t happy when the nurses came in to check on him in the middle of the night. Sorry dad.😂

Other great James Caan movies include The Godfather and Alien Nation. Other great Dennis Hopper movies include Apocalypse Now, True Romance, and Easy Rider
If you guys enjoyed Misery you should get on “Dolores Claiborne” (1995) another amazing performance from Kathy and of course another great Stephen King adaptation.

I’m not a pot smoker but my late husband was, big time. So we decided to watch Delores Claiborne and he handed me a cookie. I’d never had an edible and didn’t even know what one was. The longer that movie went on it became SO INTENSE! Never again.
I literally SCREAMED loud when she broke his ankles.. Uggh.. I still cannot watch that again. It was so well done. I read that Kathy Bates would cry between takes due to her diving so deep into character.

Kathy Bates owned this whole movie, James Caan did a great job too but Kathy just ate every scene she was in. Iconic. This is also not the only Stephen King adaptation she's been in, she played the main role in the movie Dolores Claiborne (did a great job there too, movie is so worth watching) and was in an episode of the 90s miniseries The Stand though I believe uncredited in that.
James Caan and Kathy Bates are both unbelievably talented, I don't think this would have worked with lesser actors. And I know Annie is described as sort of dumpy and homely in the books and they really tried to make Kathy Bates look plain...but no, she's still beautiful imo. I absolutely love her.
In the book, when he uses the wheelchair to get out of the room, his wheels scuffed the door jamb and Annie also found the broken Bobby-pin in the door lock. Instead of hobbling him though, she actually chopped his feet off with an ax.

I'm sure you heard this already but, when I saw this at the cinema the audience was quiet up until she whacked his ankles and then the whole audience let out a loud AAAHHHH!!!! and then everyone was quiet again. Well deserved Oscar for Kathy Bates but James Caan should have gotten an award as well. One of the best movies ever filmed.
Great reaction of a great horror film. Think you may be mistaking James Caan for Dennis Hopper or Dean Stockwell who were in Blue Velvet. James Caan's most memorable film other than this one is definitely The Godfather.

I was a teenager when this came out and had never heard of Kathy Bates before. She came out of nowhere for me and took the Oscar. She is stunning in this.

Kathy Bates went on to win Best Actress for her role in this movie! I first saw Misery on CBS 15 years ago, didn't know what it was about, then I learns it's about a famous author believed dead after a car accident, is rescued by an obsessed fan whom forces him to write a new book just for her or he'll face the consequences. From the novel by Stephen king and director Rob Reiner.
As soon as I see Kathy Bates in a movie, all that pops into my mind is that ankle breaking scene! The horror!

In case you don't know: the lady he was talking to in the beginning, his editor was Lauren Bacall, the widow and movie partner of Humphrey Bogard.

I’ve seen a few, but am surprised that there aren’t way more than that because it was such a surprising mistake. I guess they do kind of favor one another, but Caan is so well known that its still surprising to me. Lol.

Also I think trivia memory differs from person to person -- I've met movie buffs who never paid attention to specific characters, cast/crew names, etc. but knew the plot points to the detail.
FMJames has a technical eye and a willing suspension of disbelief: "Where are you taking me? And how are we getting there?"
This is why I love the magic of filmmaking. Mostly just 2 persons in a room. 1 guy mostly in a chair/bed. Annie Wilkes is one of the best villains out there. James Caan was also amazing. How did they do that? I am in awe.
I went cold for this movie and man..... I wasn't ready for what was coming.
I know a lot of RUclips channels will definitely watch/react to popular films, mostly modern Star Wars films and superhero stuff. So, it is cool to see people watching/reacting to this kind of overlooked great films. Hope to see more. Keep up the good work.

Annie being a manifestation of King’s own fan base and how he feels held hostage by it is just genius. Btw in the book, Annie cuts off his foot and coteries it with a blow torch.
you can really understand how Paul felt "hobbled" by the fanbase that kept him writing about Misery. It really puts the scene in the beginning into context, where he celebrates his new book being finished, then flies down the mountain and keeps his hand on it even in the crash- how it must have represented freedom and a new beginning to him. Makes it even more painful that he was forced to destroy it.
The sheriff and his wife are great in this also, especially the wife 😄

Im fairly certain that I remember hearing (though I dont remember exactly where) that even though Kathy Bates was a completely unheard-of actress at the time of casting this movie.. the director said it absolutely had to be her. Specifically because the well known actresses of the time, who audititoned for the role... either wouldn't or couldn't portray the character of Annie Wilks, in a way that made them look unattractive, or undesirable lol.
Basically the other actresses would only portray her as the as the 'femme fetale' archetype.. and not the weird mentally disturbed, unstable, and unhinged lunatic, that they were actually looking for.
But Kathy was different because she was absolutely willing to go there, to make the character believeable, and make the movie that much more terrifying in a realistic way.

Great story, great acting, great direction, and that hobbling scene is one of the most unsettling injuries ever put to film. Absolutely horrific. Everything came together for this one. Brilliant film in nearly every regard.

The 'hobbling' scene was one of the BEST parts because it was so well executed.
one of my FAVORITE movies. I saw it a few times before I read about Stephen King saying it was inspired by how he felt imprisoned by addiction. "Crazy" is exactly how to describe it. One of the scariest films and it's not special effects heavy or complicated or supernatural. There's no traditional chase scene or action battle. It's mostly one middle aged woman spending time with you in a cabin.

Yes- a book by Stephen King, and one of the few King-based movies where they got it really right! The actor is James Caan - first time I saw him was in The Godfather.

More King movies are well done than ones that are not. Carrie is great, Christine is good, this one, Stand By Me, Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, The Mist.

I saw this in theaters when I was in high school. I also once owned a set of sheets featured in this movie (from Target).
There are STILL a few parts in this movie that absolutely scare the crap out of me.

Amazing movie. Amazing book. The big differences between the book and the movie are, Annie chops one of Paul's feet off. The director thought the audience would laugh at the scene, so he changed it to having Kathy break both his feet with the sledgehammer instead. The other is that book also takes place during the early spring. When one of the officers arrives, Kathy runs and chops him up with a lawnmower. James Caan wasn't in Blue Velvet. He's also known for playing as Sonny in The Godfather, and he also plays as the father in Elf. I think you're confusing him with Dennis Hopper, who was a brilliant actor in his own right. If you want to see Dennis Hopper acting crazy, watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. That film is nuts. In a good way.

And don't forget that she followed up the amputation by lighting his leg (and then the bed) on fire to cauterize it.
Misery is such an amazing film in so many ways, I'm glad you did this reaction to it. Some things they did with this film (sound design, how some things were framed, holding long shots, etc) to help build the unsettling tension for the viewer, also reminded me at times of bits of the similar work in No Country For Old Men.

Pop fact for you: Bette Midler was approached to play Annie, but she turned it down because she refuses to play any violent roles in her career. She made an exception for her role in For The Boys (also starring James Caan), because war is real. Given Bette is my favorite actress, had done this role, I don't think I'd ever be able to see her the same way LOL.

8:55 Bro, I saw this movie in the theater and when we got to this scene I kept leaning further and further into the back of my seat to the point I was practically sitting on the person behind me. lol Seriously tho, this scene scared the sh!t out of me and 30 years later it still makes my blood run cold. This was absolutely masterful acting by Kathy Bates and James Caan, who I think often gets overlooked. This entire film is just a masterpiece.
Actor James Caan was also Sonny Corleone (Michael Corleone's big brother) in 'The Godfather'. He was also the dad in the movie 'Elf'.

She won the ACADEMY AWARD for best actress (SO RARE for HORROR/SUSPENSE movies) and she 💯 deserved it!!
Rob Reiner is a fantastic Director/Actor. Misery, A few good men, Harry & Sally, Stand by me. And he is great as Jorden Belfords Dad in Wolf of Wall Street.
I saw this in the theater. I was stressed as hell the whole way through. Great acting and the way you experienced the character's terror and fear. Great review.
James Caan imo doesn’t get enough credit for his performance only because Kathy Bates did such a spectacular job. Honestly props to him for taking the role as many other top tier actors didn’t want to play it because of how challenging it would be with the lack of mobility/being potentially outshined by Kathy. He sold his performance just as well, only in a more understated and subtle way. You really can feel all of his pain, frustration and anger the entire time. Just all around an amazing movie with incredible actors.
Rob Reiner's filmography is pretty unparalleled. Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, Stand By Me and Misery are all very different movies.
The supporting cast of this film had silver screen icon, and frequent Humphrey Bogart co-star, Lauren Bacall as the literary agent.
The sheriff was played by Richard Farnsworth who eventually was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award in 2000, the same year he died. It is a David Lynch movie with Sissy Spacek and Chris Farley's brothers and I can't believe I've never watched it.
His wife/co-worker in Misery is Frances Sternhagen who did another Stephen King adaptation in 2007's The Mist. She played Cliff Clavin's mom on Cheers for 7 episodes, and according to IMDB is still alive at 91 years young!

Loved your reaction and you're video as I do all of the ones I have seen from your channel James and just so you know the Shining and Misery all happened in the same place just at different times because in the book Misery! Annie meets a reporter who is going to the ruins of the Overlook to take pictures here's an excerpt from page 211 “When I told him I had a place in Sidewinder, he said that was a real coincidence. He said HE was going to Sidewinder. He said he’d gotten an assignment from a magazine in New York. He was going to go up to the old hotel and sketch ruins. His pictures were going to be with an article they were doing. It was a famous old hotel called the Overlook. It burned down ten years ago. The caretaker burned it down. He was crazy. Everyone in town said so. But never mind; he’s dead.” isn't that cool? Oh and James? I'm you're number one fan! LOL
I saw the stage play of Misery on Broadway several years ago starring Bruce Willis. It wasn’t particularly great, but it was terribly enjoyable! I would have watched it several times over if I could. The hobbling scene played out exactly like in the movie.
(James Caan wasn’t in Blue Velvet. That was the late great Dennis Hopper. Must watch him in the awesome action movie Speed, starring Keanu Reeves. It’s one epic action film.)

I first watched this when I was probably 7 or 8 years old with my grandfather - it was a few days before christmas and we were both up late, the movie came on and we were glued to the screen, I had nightmares for weeks about Annie and somehow it became a christmas tradition for us for quite a few years xD
YAY so happy you're watching this one!! Kathy won the Oscar for this much deserved and i feel that James Caan deserved one too!
Watched this movie for the first time in years, then came back to see if you had a reaction on it. Very pleased you did. When I saw this as a kid, it was merely terrifying. As an adult, you see how meta it is, and the details make it even more terrifying. Bates was insane & put on a show, but Caan was quite good as well.

You're right! They did a great job at showing just how much pain he's in, while also showing how unearthly strong she is. A lot of people don't think about this, but nurses are VERY physically strong, because they have to pick up, turn over, and transfer dead weight all day long. This situation would already be terrifying enough if you weren't in complete agony and physically weak. This whole movie makes you feel so uneasy as her violence increases and his time is running out.
Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this. Well deserved.
