Kathy Bates got a well deserved Oscar for best actress for this. She’s amazing
She also won the Golden Globe too. She was awesome
Yes. In this role she reminds me of Nurse Ratched.
facts
If you were sad thinking that the movie was 31 years ago because it likely means that the actor who played the sheriff is dead now, you would be right. Richard Farnsworth died in 2000 and tragically he had terminal cancer that was so painful that he shot himself at the age of 80.
The Grey Fox lives forever.
He played in the original Anne of Green Gables series.
@@rhaenyralikesyoutube6289 yes! He was Matthew. Excellent in that too.
Wow, my dad was in so much pain he was watching tv shows about assisted suicide in other countries. Now it's legal in many US states. Most choose it because of loneliness or not wanting to be a burden on their families
I think you have to be terminally ill for physician-assisted suicide though? At least in California I think you have to have 6 months or less to live, to qualify for that last resort.
Yes, they were right with the casting. Kathy Bates won the Oscar for this.
she absolutely deserved it ohmy
Quite sad the Oscars don't reward horror movies like this anymore despite she played the psychotic nurse perfectly.
she won the COCK-A-DOODIE OSCAR..... MISTER MAN!!!!!
@@JuandeFucaU ONE MILLION UPVOTES!

An actual queen of acting that lady, heard she got the role in Dolores Claiborne also. So now that has to be on my list as well!

@@Centane One of the more understated Stephen King movie's but it's my favorite. Kathy Bates is amazing again. They also made a show Castle Rock with a young Annie Wilkes as the protagonist
One of the few Stephen King adaptations that were near perfect. Directed by Rob Reiner who also directed another great Stephen King adaptation Stand By Me.
don't mention the pie eating contest ok?
Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile are also perfect or near perfect.
Kathy Bates NAILED it as Annie. Absolutely loved this movie and both performances
I remember back in the 1960s....my mother used to say "Heavens to Betsy!" when she'd get really flustered.
I find that so charming, I love when people find other ways to say things than to just curse
@@Centane Actually, I recall looking up the origins of the phrase a couple of years ago......& no one could determine what it even means.....LOL
I got ten bucks says yo momma used to say "oopsie daisy" too.
I personally preferred the "Heavens to Murgatroyd" more myself.
you'll have to google who Snagglepuss is yourself if you don't remember him
I remember the 60's too ya old coot..... glad you clarified that it was the 1960's so the kids didn't think you were totally medieval.... bingo and pudding tonight, right?
Richard Farnsworth, who played Buster, was a stuntman and supporting actor for decades before Misery. He became a minor star when he starred in The Grey Fox, a Canadian film from the early 80´s, but his major breakthrough was when he was Oscar nominated for Best Actor for his heartwrenching performance in the incredible The Straight Story, from 1999, which you absolutely must see. Sadly, he was suffering from terminal cancer. It left him partially paralysed and the following year, seeing no way out and an inevitable decline, he killed himself with a rifle. Rumour has it it was his cowboy way. He lived his life entirely on his own terms and he was determined to die on his own terms too. I don´t know if this is true, but it is the only solace I can find in such a tragic end.
kudos for the props to Dick Farnsworth.... I mentioned him in a comment too.... really cool guy huh..... Grey Fox made him huge here in Canada..... eh.
seeing him again here reminded me of The Straight Story again too... what a beautiful, heartfelt, rare, "normal" movie from David Lynch... makes me wanna get on a lawnmower.
don't forget Dickie boy got a supporting Oscar nod for the Redford/Fonda "Comes a Horseman" movie from '78 too..... perfect casting that one.
wet-coasters like me know his Olympia beer ads too.... dude got a Silver Star for his time in WW2.... nothing but respect for how he went out... being next to his wife again.
@@JuandeFucaU Straight Story is one of maybe two movies that had me laughing and crying sad tears at the same time. And yes, tragic as the news was, there´s a strange dignity to it all. Not so much suicide as self-prescribed euthanasia. Of course, I wish it hadn´t come to that.
@@ToniMcGinty being from Canada and the home of Dr "Death" Kevorkian and legal suicide I had no problem with it... and no doubt he was hurtin...
how many horses do you think he had to put down in his life before that moment?
A Day at the Races with the Marx Bros and Gunga Din? nice start..... the guy knew the score, what to do with a wounded horse, and a wounded cowboy, I think.
good to know there's others who feel as strongly about Dick as I do.... no homo tho.... we're all too old.... I'm past my pasture days and almost glue now.
Yes a bent pin like that will open an old style padlock. I learned to open a lock with a bent paper clip from a RUclips video, when I lost my key to a storage unit, and the paper clip worked.
Interesting. I have a very old padlock designed off of a 200-300 year old design, and a bobby pin or paper clip definitely isn't opening that.
You're sacred when men use a straight-edge razor. Well as a man I'm scared when I see women put on their eyeliner. I always envision them poking their eye out. But that's just me. BTW I use an electric razor. Ha
The process and rules for CPR have changed multiple times over the years. Back in the 90's, it was 15 chest compressions followed by 2 breathes.
Now I know how Johnny Depp felt.
be honest now..... wouldn't you pay to see Amber and Johnny do a re-make of Misery? (or, are they still doing the live version in court?)
Brad and Angelina could play the sheriff and his wife?
maybe get Roman Polanski to direct.
and Harvey Weinstein to produce, of course...... Bill Cosby could still do a good pig?

Richard Farnsworth (1920-2000), who played the sheriff, was in the movies for more than 60 years. He appeared in a number of movies uncredited. He was mainly a stuntman. He took pride in the fact that he didn't cuss in any of his movies.
Because you asked..."The Martian" by Andy Weir was an incredible book and Ridley Scott did a great job with the movie. I recommend both. They are a bit different, but because they are different media, probably necessary. Solid adaptation.

that would just grow more potatoes wouldn't it....
not in my top ten Ridley movies but it is still Ridley.. great cast.. goofy exposition for characters who are supposedly nerds... but I said I wouldn't shit on it.. Matt Damon's job.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid both agree with you.

1. It's great to see young people who read something besides the internet.
2. Stephen King is THE GOAT. I have read 53 of his books including some of his Richard Backman.
3. Francis Sternhagen/Virginia had a prominate roll in King's other book adaption The Mist.
4. Kathy Bates deserve ;her Oscar for this.
One Stephen King short story that had a truly terrifying premise, that may be too difficult to translate to live action, is The Jaunt. The idea of spending perhaps millions of years in a disembodied state with nothing but your thoughts sounds horrifying.

Nobody could have played Annie better than Kathy Bates. She's also incredible in the movie version of Stephen King's "Dolores Claiborne".
Dolores Claiborne is truly on my list, can't wait till I read the book and watch the movie!!
I freakin love this film, the actors were perfectly cast and Kathy Bates is a total bad ass, she is so good at playing crazy...lover her! So glad you reacted to this film. If you like Stephen King you should check out a show/ seeies called Castle Rock, it's based off the Stephen king universe. There are two seasons so far and even though they are their own story both are tied together by a character. The second season focuses on the back story of a young Annie Wilkes and the actress does a very good job at portraying her in my opinion.
I agree great casting. I've heard good things about Castle Rock but I haven't seen it yet.
Great movie, You should also do other Stephen King adaptions like The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me.
Shawshank is next up..... Stand By Me she'll probably watch before she gets too annoyed constantly hearing about some kind of pie eating contest.
They toned down the more graphic violence just a bit cause they actually had to show it instead of just letting people imagine it. She hobbles him instead of amputating him and in the book she also cuts off one of his thumbs with an electric knife and they left that completely out.
Yess I was wondering where some of the very graphic scenes went, but I understood also they would have difficulties having them in the movie.
I read the book years ago in high school so I don’t remember much of it. I may have to read it again.
I didn't know they had high schools way back then.
I just remember watching my hairy dad crack coconuts open with a rock yanno.
I read it back in those days before the big bang too.... haven't seen the movie since the 90's either... surprised tho, to learn it was the 1990's and not 1890's thought it was older.
I think if we re-read again..... it we're just going to re-forget it again..... don't you? I forgot what the question was.
I've driven past Steven King's house before, as it's only a couple hours away from where I live in Maine. My mother is also a huge fan of Kathy Bates, so I was pretty excited that I saw this on your channel, but Green Mile is one of my favorite movies. You should also watch My Boy Jack. It's a great war movie about the Great War told from the homefront's perspective.
I love how you've read the novel first and comparing the two. Love your commentary. And by the way Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Oscar in the U.S. for her performance as Annie Very well deserved cockadoodie acting.

yeah cos hollywood likes to tone the violence down when it comes to book adaptations.
@@SaRENRampaiger I heard the original book for The Human Centipede was actually more of a musical comedy before Hollywood got hold of it.
@@SaRENRampaiger not really. Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein are more violent and gory than the books they're based on. The Shining movie is also more bloody than the book.
One of the better adaptations of Stephen King stories. Up there with the Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me and The Green Mile. I agree with you on liking The Shining book and not the movie. Another great movie adaptation is The Princess Bride also directed by Rob Reiner.
Princess Bride is the greatest thing in the world except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.
Never would I think to say how big of a grin I get when I see a villain geek out like Annie Wilkes does over Misery.
Bobby pins, it depends on the door knob. Most interior doorknobs that can lock have an internal button that if you press it down, it can undo the locking mechanism. Older knobs sometimes have an internal latch that when flipped with a key can unlock. It’s possible, but not easy.

My thought when I heard that was, "What movie has ever gotten that right?" It's easier to just show what people *think* CPR looks like rather than bog down in the details. : )
I suspect the reason they didn't use the axe that you were asking about was that they felt that Stanley Kubrick, a decade earlier with his "Shining" adaptation, had used up all the "axe points" permitted in Stephen King adaptations forever.

If you like Annie Wilkes as a character, they use her as a main character in season 2 of Castle Rock on Hulu. A lot of good Stephen King ties throughout that whole series.
YESS I found out about it the second I tried to make my thumbnail. I´ll try my best to find the tv-show even when we do not have Hulu in Norway!
@@Centane Learned two things there. Didn't know you were in Norway and certainly didn't know that Hulu wasn't available in Norway. That certainly does make it less convenient.
Maybe a VPN to make it look like you're in another country would work to access Hulu. I switched mine to Norway and it wouldn't let me access anything. Maybe it would work the other way around. If not, I believe the series is available for purchase digitally or on disc.
Anyway, hope you get to watch it. My wife and I enjoyed it. Lizzy Caplan was really good as a young Annie Wilkes.
You are aware that Castle Rock is the location of many of Stephen King's stories, no?
I heard about someone who had Hulu in Norway.... but she froze to death.
Which do you prefer? Reading the book first, or seeing the movie first? Knowing what's going to happen, seeing how it compares to how you imagined it? Differences in plot? Long ago I pursued these questions as a college thesis.
Honestly if you watch the movie first it´s better. Because in the book they have many more details about the plots, the characters, the places, things happening etc. and once you watch the movie, some of your favorite parts may be taken out.
Rather than being "let down", you don´t want to know what has happened.

Kathy Bates was a great Annie Wilkes, but they toned her down quite a bit from the book version of her. Still one of the best SK book to movie adaptations.
EDIT:
and yes if the lock is old enough it will work, as you may remember in the book Paul learned from a gang member or criminal i believe how to pick a lock for another book he wrote so that was how he knew how to do it.
Also remember when they shoot a movie they do shoot extra scenes that end up getting cut, they also shoot a scene multiple ways, like his feet being amputated may have been considered or even shot but sometimes it's deemed too graphic or may effect the films rating

In order to make a book justice, the movie does have to have differences. For one, the movie has to surprise even those who have read the book. A great example of that is Stephen King's The Shining, which is a great book - and which twists things around in the movie to leave everyone not knowing how it will end, even if you have read the book. And it does that while being just as good as the book.
In this case, the same happens. She uses a sledge hammer instead of an ax, and I find that a good choice - almost more gruesome, but it makes for less gore, and it's difficult to convincingly film someone not having their feet.
And the ending... it is almost more horror filled to realize what he will have to live with for the rest of his life.
As a locksmith I can tell you that with that type of lock, if it was kept clean and lubricated a good stiff bobby pin would be able to lock and unlock the door. It might take some time to master the technique though.
Great to see someone else who was disappointed in the film version of The Shining. So much was changed that I wonder why they bothered to base it on King's book. Another King adaptation that made infuriating changes was "The Dead Zone". The best King adaptations IMO are "Pet Sematary", "The Mist", "Cujo" (even though a lot was left out and they changed the ending), " The Shawshank Redemption", and "The Green Mile". "Cat's Eye" is a good anthology film that adapts two of King's short stories and a story he wrote for the film.

Kathy Bates is great and James Caan is also. You need to react to an old James Caan movie called Brian's Song. I always thought he was a good actor, but that role really got me.
Another great Kathy Bates movie is Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
The old Pet Cemetary is good but dated, the remake has better production values. The Mist is another good Stephen King adaptation, it just leaves you so hollow.
I´ve heard that the old Pet Sementary is more scary than the new one, so if I were to watch any of those I might watch the old one. Or maybe watch both of them and then compare both of them to the book in the future 👀
@@Centane the original Pet Sematary is the best. King himself wrote the screenplay. There are scenes that are word for word from the book
@@Centane Yes the old one is scarier. You'll see why.. And it has Blaze Berdahl from my childhood tv series called Ghostwriter!
And the remake doesn't hold a candle when it comes to tension and high stakes at the ending.
@@Centanehow about this..... put the original old Pet Semetary movie on one screen.....
put the new version of the movie on another screen....
then, read the book on a third screen.....
and react to them all while burying your whole neighbourhood's pets in the woods behind your house? or maybe just the first three and I'll bring this up with my shrink.
the bobbing pin can work with older locks because they were much simpler.
To be fair they do occasionally update CPR procedure, In the last 10 years I know that it has been changed at least 3 times and it was during a blizzard.
Super fun reaction to a truly great movie. Glad you enjoyed it so much -- you've inspired me to check out the book now!
A couple of great adaptation from book to movie that I've seen was Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice which was from the first book in her series called The Vampite Chronicles and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien.
@13:46 Those are very old door locks. They could be picked with a bobby pin fairly easily by anyone who knows anything about lock picking.
This is such an iconic film. Thank you. Your makeup was on point too LOL
LMFAO thank you! 😂
@@Centane of course!😂☺️
A book and movie that I love both versions of is The Princess Bride.
Great movie. The same director that did this did the Princess Bride, Rob Reiner . Kathy Bates got an Oscar for this role. She did another Stephen King movie called Dolores Clairborne. You should see that movie too.
loved this angel !! I need to read Misery 🖤
Misery was such a good book!! Also Noelle Gallagher's favorite book of all time 😍❤️
Many people say MISERY was Kathy Bates break through movie. And, at least to me, she didn't stop there. I loved this Book and thanks to Kathy, the movie too. Everyone else did great, don't get me wrong. But Kathy WAS Annie Wilkes from 1990, and on. Still is, to be honest. LOL. Great Reaction, thank you for sharing this with us.
You can unlock a door with a bobby pin but you probably need a tensioner as well.
Also I love Cathy Bates, she's a great person to boot.
Yes, bobby pins work
I read Jaws before I watched the movie and have to say the movie did it justice. Same with Cujo, I had the first edition of that book but was lost during a move.
Awesome reaction. I'm your number 1 fan....
I don't get your COCK-A-DOODIE COMMENT MISTER MAN!!!!!
I don't know if you've seen it, but I think "Requiem For A Dream" by Hubert Selby Jr was a pretty faithful adaptation from book to film. Of course, they cut some stuff out, but it was a very complete film and because of it, I never touched any drug (besides alcohol) in my entire life, lol.
good god I never read the book but can't imagine.... won't imagine.... what the hell they could've cut out of the movie..... some of the most graphic moments I can recall.
not so much graphic visually... just such graphically anti-intimate situations and subject matter huh.
I still did drugs after seeing that movie but.....
I really cut down on getting double penetration raped at college frat-gang parties after seeing what happened to sweet little Jennifer Connelly... did I say spoiler alert?
When I saw this in the movie theater everyone grown so loud when they did the hobbling
One flew over the cukoos nest is a good book and movie.
and Kamilla is kinda like Nurse Ratchett now that her nursing apprenticeship is over, right?
Stephen King Adaptations worth watching the movies include:
"The Shawshank Redemption" from "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me" from the novella "The Body"...
Maybe also, "The Green Mile"...
OMG Feel so old.
Read my brother's copy of Misery in 1988 when I was 15. Saw it my movie theater (i worked at) in 1990. over and over and over! hehe this is probably the best King adaptation; considering how long his books are, compared to a 2 hour movie. The Shining comes close; but I love Kathy Bates.
I do with they would have added the scene with the electric meat knife...I expected it in a Director's Cut or something, but nope.
I have always gone back & forth whether it's best to read the novel or watch the movie first.... I mean watching movie first & then reading the novel you picture in your mind how the main characters look.. but reading the novel first.... you get much more details on the story... so i have no idea which is better... lol
Kathy Bates won the Oscar for Best Actress in this movie.
The novel was more graphic with the ax. Read it over a weekend. Hell of a page Turner.
!! absolutely same, i loved the book. had me hooked and kept me awake an entire night trying to finish it

Books as movies / series: For Stephen King, _The Stand_ and _Firestarter._ From what I remember The Stand made some of the characters out to be either rougher or more pathetic than the series, both good and evil, a few characters lumped into one for brevity; but also a bit more explanation for why Harold Laudner did what he did. Firestarter was pretty graphic, alot more disturbing than the movie, more in depth about the physical pain associated with telekinesis, but the major story beats were there. Charlie was essentially Akira.
Other books as cinema? _Dune, The Godfather, No Country For Old Men, The First Circle, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Three Days of the Condor, The Onion Field, Kwaidan._ In some cases the movie does more justice to the characters than the book.
...And _Dr Zhivago._
It was a great idea to read the book before watching the movie so you could compare. And also adding a bit of "NURSE REACT TO" to it. Good job.
I guess you didn't recognize Paul Sheldon's agent as Lauren Bacall, a very famous actress from classic movies of the 40s and 50s, like 'Casablanca'. Married to Humphrey Bogart for 12 years until his death in 1957.
oh these kids today.... think this Misery movie is old huh..... Lauren Bacall movies were carved on cave walls... and Humphrey Bogart was half-Neanderthal.. and half chimp.
I watched another reaction to 'Top Gun' where the reactor saw 1986 and said "Oh wow, I didn't know this movie was THAT old!" EXCUSE ME?? Damn kids!
@@Curraghmore Popcorn in Bed did Jurassic Park today and I swear she almost asked if they still had dinosaurs in the 90's..... I bet she was thinking it tho.
I highly recommend Dolores Claiborne.
Stephen King, Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Strathairn and Christopher Plummer.
that one is on her radar.... book first most likely tho..... just so's yannos.
You might want to read One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. It is written as a narrative from the character of the Chief.
The movie is from the viewers point of view. Both are excellent.
I would love to see your reaction!
McMurphy : What are we doing in here, Chief? Huh? What's us two guys doing in this fucking place? Let's get out of here. Out.
Chief : Canada?
McMurphy : Canada. We'll be there before these sonofabitches know what hit 'em. Listen to Randall on this one.

Beautiful, beautiful movie - beautiful book -
Rip yo 3 great actors. Richard Farnsworth, who never took a acting class, Lauren Bacall Old school Hollywood, James Caan, in thief, godfather, Alien nation, Brian's Song.
You hid your eyes at the most shocking part. So you didn't really get the full effect.
she's from Norway so the skin on her fingers is practically see-through.
instead of toes she has little skis on the end of her feet too.
gosh darn it i didnt get to see her hobbling him ):
