One thing I appreciate about your review is that you have your camera setup on a tripod. This makes it easy for your viewers to see the stationary setup. Other reviewers hold the camera in their hands and wave it at the audience, making it difficult for us to see the subject.
I almost got the smallHD Focus, but for around $200 more (plus the SSD) you can get a very nice monitor that happens to be a high quality recorder. This is a no-brainer for anyone in the market for a great 5 inch monitor with an amazing support team behind it. Also those accessories look promising, they mentioned a timecode one that would be awesome for multi camera shoots.
I don't see why USB-C couldn't transport raw video, given that it is a much more generalized protocol than HDMI, and certainly has the necessary speed. If camera manufacturers (*cough* Sony) are willing to spit raw data out of USB-C ports on existing cameras, then Atomos would be wise to make a USB-C module
An important note for gh5 gh5s users in anamorphic mode: The Atomos Ninja V seem to have a huge limitation: in 50/60P mode 4:3, the display does not want to display or record full screen, so you will have a small output on screen and also loose the x2 enlarger to focus while recording. Someone reported about the fan noise as well on the fan noise. Seriously, I was about to order this because the main reason I wanted this was for anamorphic mode but it seems it has some hidden flaws which I cannot live with.

Great Rundown. I Recently purchased a Panasonic S1, not knowing that the Camera doesn't support Trigger or Timecode out Via HDMI. Therefore I cant trigger recording on my Ninja V without physically touching the Unit itself. I was thinking I could Possibly use a LanC connection, but Atomos only supports Sony/Canon LanC out.( Per specifications) do you know of a product I could Mount to my rig and Trigger NinjaV recording via external Remote. Thanks!
What I just don't understand is why the companies that are making these screens/recorders do not provide a solution for the exposed HDMI, make sure the thing can't fall out, be pulled out or gets loose. Then again, that would probably make us nog want the SDI versions anymore...
Very nice little unit indeed. I actually jumped the gun a little bit and bought this instead of buying a new computer. The problem I have now is the files are too big to put in my old MacBook which runs on 10.12.6 So if you don’t mind may I ask if you know how to get smaller size videos? I’m not sure if the $100 upgrade to H.265 would work in my computer. It barely has an extra 40G to work with. Any help will be very much appreciated! God bless!! Blue
Hi Karl ! thanks for this great review on this Ninja V ! --- When recording to the Ninja, does this bypass recording to your camera ? ... could i use a Canon camcorder with this unit ? or a Canon 6D ? .... and what is the advantage to recording to this device over the memory card that you put into the camera ( like you find on a dslr ) Thank you ! hopefully you can answer them and maybe others. Very cool ! I am loving this new unit !
BakeLikeAPro For most non-cinema cameras, recording externally stops internal recording. However, you can monitor and record internally. For a lot of cameras, recording externally can give great benefits. For instance, it puts it on a 2.5” SSD and you can directly encode it in Pro Res or Avid DNxHD codecs. This saves time by not having to import footage and convert in post. The drives are also a lot faster for copying memory off of them. Sometimes, you can even edit and deliver in the field from a 2.5” SSD from a laptop. Also, recording externally can unlock higher bitrate options and larger color spaces than if you’re internally recording
Great video Karl. Please can you an in depth video of all the settings as I am new to Atomos. The obvious things I can cope with but can you run through all the functions :)
Great! Cant wait to get mine, been on order with you for months. Would like to see more videos about the setting and using it. Would like some more info on atoms x ssd, sizes and prices.
Has anyone else noticed a more contrasty image on the Atomos Ninja V when shooting in Slog 3 on the Sony A7sii? Anyone know how to get the full dynamic range out of the camera?
No, you can use it for a 1080p only camera too, you'll benefit from the recording aspect as long as your camera can output a clean HDMI feed ( i.e video with no camera overlays), you'll also benefit from having a larger, brighter monitor than a built in screen. Dan
By the camera overlays, I mean the text/ settings that appear on the screen on your camera, most cameras have a 'clean HDMI' setting which will not output the information over the HDMI port. If you're using the Ninja V as just a monitor, then this might not be an issue if you'd rather have those settings on the screen, however if you're intending on recording with the Ninja V, any overlays which are not the Ninja V's UI will be recorded into the footage. Where is this video from at the 8 minute mark? I want to build a monitor holder like that for my Ronin S, anyone know what SmallRig parts were used for that?

Hello 👋🏻 Well I am looking forward to buy NINJA V. But before that I got few questions in my head. 1- I got canon M-50 MARK 2 ,so is it compatible with Ninja V 2- My only reason to my NINJA V is because I wanna record 1 hour video @1080@60 with M50 MARK 2, So it that possible to continuously record for 1 hour. PLEASE DO ANSWER ME TO THIS.
Anyone having freezing or glitching issues with xt3/ninja V combo? My xt3 freezes periodically - only when connected to the Ninja V. Also I get glitching (only when shooting in 4K) on the Ninja V. Atomos has sent me two Ninja V's now and i've had the same issue on both. Potentially a xt3 issue is what I am thinking? Let me know if anyone has seen or heard about this - or if you have any tips. All firmware is up to date. Using supported SSDs and Atomos 2.0 hdmi cables capable of 4K 60.
That is a combination of multiple small rig parts. Their new swivel and tilt mount does exactly the same thing though. It’s expected in about a months time. Carl
It's high time the camera industry adopted thunderbolt for high speed, high quality, high quantity data throughput. Sdi is old as hell, unnecessarily bulky in 2018, less useful and less effective then thunderbolt would be except for legacy type equipment.
I would also like to see that but as far as I know Thunderbolt is Intel's technology so even if the camera manufacturers want to implement it it might not be able to run with the processors used in cameras or Intel might not allow it. And I believe it's not as easy to implement even on computers ... thus Thunderbolt is mostly seen on higher-end laptops. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Ljubomir Bardzic Nah, that's not an issue Black Magic and Fujifilm atleast already have USBc ports in their newest cameras. It's a short hop to full thunderbolt from there and manufacturers can add small threaded collars on small USBc plugs to securely thread onto bolt threaded receptacle and then it's really one port to rule them all from there.
In fact, sdi is used more fore broadcast purposes. Its the only connexion that is fully secured . You can not unplug this by accident. Hdmi usb and all of those connexionx are consumer/prosumer grade connexion . They have to keep the sdi connexion because the broadcast and cinema industry use it and they need it
Maxime Desjardins Nope, I replied to someone else about this. If you add threaded collar or a even the same kind of snap lock collar to a USBc plug end, you're just as secure as with a big clumsy SDI plug with exponentially higher data throughout capacity and the ability to send and receive all data I/O over one cable. The only reason not to adopt is just about being stubborn. The industry was already moving in this direction 20 years ago with FireWire and it was freaking fantastic for a time. The problem was that FireWire was an Apple protocol. Even though it was an open standard available to all manufacturers barely half of the industry adopted it, part of the industry re-branded the tech confusing consumers...it ended as a corporate ego/greed created mess. With thunderbolt being Intel owned (basically next level FireWire Apple gifted to Intel) and USBc being a more and more universal connector whether it carries thunderbolt protocol data or not, now is the time to make the switch.
Hey great video! I have a a7iii and I was wondering if I could get 4K prores 10 bit? I pre ordered the bmpcc 4K, can I get the same image quality from a7iii paired with the atmos v? Looking forward to your reply. Thanks!
Wil Baptiste no, garbage in garbage out. How can you think that 8bit will become 10 bit by just hooking a cheap hdmi cable between the camera and atomos?
Dear pro av ....maybe you will anwser my question 😉... Will the ninja V paired with an canon 6D mk II any improvements in video quality , 4 K or maybe 10 bit FHD ? Grrzz johny geerts
hi! Congratulations for this nice informative video. Have you ever tried ninja V with canon c100 mark 1. If it can give 4K recording and Full HD at higher frame rate, it can add new life to canon c100. Please make a video of ninja v with canon c100 mark 1 if possible. Regards.
Thanks a lot for the review, I still have a few questions. I had in mind to buy a 502 bright, but this thing here gave me concerns... I was wondering: - How long does a 5200 mAh battery last? - A large npf battery would make it last longer than a 502 bright with double LP-E6? - Does it give you the possibility to customize the guide lines? I mean, if I needed to use a certain non conventional aspect ratio, can I type it my self? - Does it give you the possibility to name clips and ssd? - Since the 502 has no touchscreen I loved the fact that I could have no fingerprints on it, how well does the Ninja V manage fingerprints and reflections? - Does the HDR mode support images from Blackmagic? You’re precious, I love your videos and your store as well, I always buy stuff from Italy and have never had problems at all!
Hi Andrea! I've been facing the same conundrum myself recently. I've spoken directly to one of the techs at Atomos and this is what I've learned: - The 502 will offer hot swappable battery plates built in. LP-E6 bats don't last long compared to the Sony style bats but out of the box the Ninja V won't offer a hot swap capability without adding an Atom X module later on. - Atomos doesn't have access to the Blackmagic Design logarithm for their LOG Film gamma. Not sure who's fault that is, probably blame on both sides. I shoot with the Ursa Mini Pro and was assured by Atomos that so long as the camera is sending out a clean signal via SDI that the Ninja V would be able to view it. The Ninja V would not, however, be able to view a RAW SDI output because Atomos monitors have no way of interpreting the signal. Fortunately the Ursa Mini Pro is able to apply LUTs internally, which may solve this issue, but I won't know for sure until running tests in person. The Blackmagic Cinema 4K I believe is also able to apply LUTs internally, hopefully solving any compatibility issues, but just bare in mind that HDR monitoring is most useful for a clean LOG output and this could lead to issues with Blackmagic cameras.
Ian Alan Very clear and precise, thanks a lot! FYI I’ll probably go with SmallHD Focus until I’ll be able to try the Ninja V and decide! After all, buy Focus in England @proav, sell used in Italy, final cost equals zero! Again, thanks a lot, you gave me both clarity and point to think about!
How come no mention that it does not monitor the entire DCI 4k image, cropping the left and right side? Also the ability to swipe away menu display in DCI 4k works on its own time or not at all. Then there’s untenable delay from the video output. Too long for using wireless video for focus pulling. Which brings me to output incompatibility. It will not communicate with Vaxis transmitter - one of the most popular wireless HD set ups. And has issues with some Teradek products. This relegated the NV to solo non client work as well as a non starter for gimbal, steadicam, vehicle or crane work where you need wireless TX for focus and monitoring. In short, fine for one man run and gun, not ready for pro use.
This is a TOTALLY new thing to me but could someone help me with an informed opinion (rather then purely speculative). I have a Nikon p900 and the screen no longer works. The camera is old but I do use it. I can plug into one of these from the P900 but my question is.... the P900 is known for having a shockingly small sensor. Will this recorder bypass the sensor of the p900 and cause a better picture? I often zoom into the picture as my interest is zoom.....zooming into buildings for example.... both zoom with the camera but also zoom in post production. Ideally, to answer this question, someone would say something like "Yes, this unit will bypass the sensor and because the p900 processes its output file at X, this unit will record at Y and be significantly better for your zoom application". Anyone help me with the gaps here?
3:52 It's funny. Get the mini to be smaller, but then add the handle so it's the same length, to stick out past the monitor again. xD Doesn't matter, really, since you're going to have an HDMI cable stick out past the monitor anymore. So why the mini? Hmm.... (Open to others to state the reason. I'm keen to know. ;D Haha!)

Would this work well with the c200? I'd like an external recorder for it but not sure what codecs and recording options I have externally, not seeing much on Canons website
Can I use my existing wifi app/tablet with GH5 to control the camera while recording to the Atomos?
I bought the Ninja V yesterday. I am unable to see ATOM HDR menu at all. Do you know by any chance why it isn’t giving the ATOM HDR menu?
It Has HDR Permanently, Also Best To Look Up Info On Atomos Web Site For Manuals,Firmware Updates,Help Etc. Ninja V Firmware AtomosOS V10.01 Now Available If You Do Not Have It
Can the Ninja V record to H.264 MP4 codec if you're only recording Full HD?
Hello 👋🏻 Well I am looking forward to buy NINJA V. But before that I got few questions in my head.
1- I got canon M-50 MARK 2 ,so is it compatible with Ninja V
2- My only reason to my NINJA V is because I wanna record 1 hour video @1080@60 with M50 MARK 2, So it that possible to continuously record for 1 hour.
How do you run it using DTap from the Ninja V using a GH5?
How is the audio recording and preamps?
Which hot shoe mount are you using?
That is a combination of multiple small rig parts. Their new swivel and tilt mount does exactly the same thing though. It’s expected in about a months time.
Carl
What battery do you recommend npf750 or 970?
We usually recommend SWIT's S-8972 NP-F batteries for the Ninja V: www.proav.co.uk/s-8972-high-capacity-battery
Dan
Do you think their would be a possibility for the GH5 to shoot raw over HDMI to the NINJA?
So the GH5 cannot output 1080p at 120fps 10 bit but can do 4k at 60fps?
How would I transfer from the SSD to Mac for post editing?
A SSD to USB reader is included
Carl
Thanks for the review. Do you know if it's compatible with the Canon 5D3?
Atomos is. They have. It is the name of _A_ company, a single entity which is grammatically singular although semantically plural.
Can I extend the FPS from 30 fps to 60 fps for canon eos R?
fispen no
for 4k 60p, do i need atomos hdmi 2.0 cable or works good any hdmi 2.0 cable?
You just need any HDMI 2.0 cable
Carl
Great review! Can I ask you: where do you print the ProAV stickers you stick to all of your equipment? Do they peel off?
Why do you ask? You sound like you want to pinch their gear and peel off the stickers, haha
Dear pro av ....maybe you will anwser my question 😉...
Will the ninja V paired with an canon 6D mk II any improvements in video quality , 4 K or maybe 10 bit FHD ?
Grrzz johny geerts
Metaldetection tube world wide no
Can you do 4K 60 with the a7iii/a7riii on this?
Anyone know how the HDMI out latency is for a second monitor or live feed?
Great video! This is definatly on my list.
Did I see some Levi Allen clips in there?
The Ninja V was playing back the official Atomos showreel at times
Carl
Can you record internally and externally at same time?
It depends on the camera
Carl
hi!
Congratulations for this nice informative video.
Have you ever tried ninja V with canon c100 mark 1. If it can give 4K recording and Full HD at higher frame rate, it can add new life to canon c100.
Please make a video of ninja v with canon c100 mark 1 if possible. Regards.
I'd love to see a SDI and XLR combination
Agreed!
Carl
Any release date?
can u record with ninja V without SSD ?
TheTishaTube no
Thanks a lot for the review, I still have a few questions. I had in mind to buy a 502 bright, but this thing here gave me concerns...
I was wondering:
- How long does a 5200 mAh battery last?
I've spoken directly to one of the techs at Atomos and this is what I've learned:
- The 502 will offer hot swappable battery plates built in.

Very clear and precise, thanks a lot!
FYI I’ll probably go with SmallHD Focus until I’ll be able to try the Ninja V and decide!
After all, buy Focus in England @proav, sell used in Italy, final cost equals zero!
Again, thanks a lot, you gave me both clarity and point to think about!
Wonder how bulky this feels on steadicam. Looks small enough I suppose.
They should do dual XLR inputs on the expansion port
its a NDI converter and a recorder and monitor?! and its the same cost as newtek's NDI adapters?! OMG YESSS
Will this work with a canon m50
Can he record 4K120fps?
max 4k60 but doesnt matter since the cameras can do max 4k60
I also want to buy one for my SONY fs5M2.
Debating whether to get this for my Panasonic G80 or should I just buy a black magic pocket 4K?
NXN Music Based on if you want Autofocus or not.
I would buy BMPCC4K
Jhenu Subramaniam yep, I preorder mine shortly after watching this! Still waiting though, should come soon
I've been begging for SDI RAW I/O module, but hear nothing about it. Additional codec, HEVC H.265 10 bit.
Wait. The Gh5 can output 120fps in 10bit, isn't It?
did you watch the video
@@247.mp4 i mean in 1080
This is a TOTALLY new thing to me but could someone help me with an informed opinion (rather then purely speculative).
I'm keen to know. ;D Haha!)
It's a great device for mac users. Since they can record pro res out of any camera 💪✌
As you were able to do for over a decade lol.
