Do external recorders improve your videos?

  • We tested if we could get any better video quality using an external recorder like the Atomos Shogun Inferno. Here is the camera gear we used in this video: bhpho.to/2JIfqUY 🎥
    Atomos Inferno is both a monitor and a video recorder. It is actually capable of recording the video you output from your camera, and make it look even better then what the camera can record internally. How is that possible? Well, most cameras need to compress the video a lot to be able to record on small SD cards and play it back on the camera. The Atomos recorder uses SSD drives, which are faster and actually cheaper. This let’s the recorder capture video with less compressed codecs like Apple Prores. This codec also makes the editing smoother as it is more optimized for editing softwares. And even though GH4 only records 8 bit, it can output 10 bit to the external recorder in both 4k 25fps and FULL HD 60fps, and thereby give you more color information and better video quality. GH5 and GH5s can also output 10 bit video.
    The Shogun Inferno is more then just an external recorder. It has a really bright monitor with many features like waveforms, vectorscopes and other monitoring tools.
    You can also add markers to your shots, and import that into your editing software. You can add luts to see how the shots would like graded, and you can even see your shot in HDR. You can record and adjust the sound directly into the shogun, with the XLR adapter you get with it.
    Another exciting thing, is the option to record Apple Prores RAW. I haven’t tested it myself yet, but it looks like something that is going to improve the video quality a lot. So stay tuned on our social media and subscribe:

    Fantastic video. One thing about long GOP is that it sacrifices and macroblocks the shadows first and then moves its way up the brightness scale the more stressed it gets. A great test would be lifting shadows in a very low light scene. Here is where ProRes will beat H.264 more soundly. Scenes in daylight will not be as noticeable as color grading night shots with deep shadows. GREAT VIDEO!

    Very good video. Thanks. As with other test videos I've seen, it looks like 10bit codecs don't provide any distinct advantages except for green screen work or grades involving extreme/crazy colour shifts and FX. Nevertheless, the Atomos looks like a great monitor/recorder combo, but the GH5/GH5s internal codecs are extremely efficient in themselves, both file size wise and image quality wise, even at 8bit. I almost wish they weren't - it would give me an excuse to buy one of Atomos' nice recorders. : ) Thanks again.

  • @crossnetworkllc
    @crossnetworkllc 6 лет назад +2

    Yes, it's true! It does improve the video quality because it bypasses the internal compression of your camera when it records to cards. I have done a test with an Panasonic AF100 and it looks way better. And your footage is in industry standard format right off the back. The only downside is file size are humugous so if you are transferring to someone, be prepared to wait while it goes

    I think you presented this information well. I use Atomos recorders primarily because of the edit friendly codec and the monitor tool set. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance recitals with multiple cameras. If I had to create proxies or transcode my footage it would take a very long time. With a high quality monitor I can be sure that my focus and exposure are perfect.

      @elkwyre 4 года назад +1

      I agree 👍 right tool for the job! For weddings and similar type work I think the Atoms would be overkill

  • @kylesimukka
    @kylesimukka 6 лет назад +7

    Can confirm, a fresh cup of coffee and a 4k monitor is a great way to process this information. The blocking pattern that's present on the internal footage is also a result of the VQ algorithm for that codec. The best way I like to describe whats happening is by using the water and hose analogy. The actual camera sensor is like a fire hose with how much data it's able to capture and output, but the camera's internal processor, bus lane, buffer, and SD card can only handle a garden hose. So the internal processor uses a codec to compress the data from a fire hose into a garden hose.
    Excellent video, and I really appreciate the side by side comparisons. Now I just need to fix my Patreon account so I can get access to the "uncompressed" version!

    Watched the video while drinking a cup of brazilian coffee on my breakfast, as reccomended. ;)
    Finally I see a video test that answers my questions about using an external recorder on panny cameras. I had the idea to get the GH4 and, after a while, with more money, get an external recorder so I can get the 10bit Prores from the camera. But I see that, for my type of work, that is more run and gun, it would not make any huge diffrerence.
    I love your channel dude, you make everything so simple and easy to watch. thanks a lot! Cheers from BR ;)

    I use the Ninja Inferno to record 10-bit ProRes HQ. So, yes, I get much better quality recording with the Ninja Inferno. As your tests showed, using 10-bit gives you way more power in post with color grading and green screen. Which is what you want if you're a serious film maker. If you're only interested in vlogging, it won't matter.

    There are many reasons to have a external recorder and especially an Atomos device. First, the Shogun Inferno would certainly be overkill for the GH4 or GH5. Also working with the ProRes codec is much easier and faster on most computers. Also as the cost continues to drop on SSD's they are more reliable and generally have more capacity than memory cards. Finally, there are so many assisting features on the monitor, it's a no brainer. Too many features that were not covered in this video but a nice job overall.

    While All-I recording may seem to be preferable, unless you have a really high bitrate the result is often a worse-looking video with more compression artefacts.
    Since all-I recording uses intra-frame compression, every frame is basically a stand-alone JPEG image. So a bitrate of 200 Mbps for a 50 fps video gives you only 500 KB/frame. If you instead use inter-frame compression with the same bitrate, the codec can apply the 25 MB of data per second in the frames and the parts of the frames where there's a lot of detail, while at the same time saving data by analysing parts of frames that stay the same over several frames.

  • @mychalsimmons4177

    It’s a little hard to see a lot of difference because of the RUclips compression too but I get it. Maybe the better choice here would be a Panasonic G85. It maybe better than the Gh4

    Back in the days i used a ninja with a canon 5D iii. You could tell a big differenz with a soft grade.
    But nowadays the qualiti bump is way less high. The shogun is a nice screen and you can use ssd's.
    But besides that, your money is probably spend better on other stuff with small projekts. And you have to deal with way bigger files. And so you need more storage.
    having switched from an bmpc4k to the gh5 it is really nice to be able to record 3 hours with 2 120 gb sd cards. The bmpc4k lasted 1hour with pro res hq with 240gb ssd

    very great video, but most important question can be, what's is the difference between sony or any v90 sd card for mov. recording and external recorder - Prores? Probably you will say external recorder has many option and even I shot video in mov. files internally later fcpx or software must to change mov. to apple Prores something? it won't be same quality accourding to external recording, because external recording can shot directly Prores mode and fcpx won't need to convert or do something with algorithm? so ex. recording beats ssd cards even I shot mov internally 10 bit 442 /400mbs.? Am I missing something?

    I did a major upgrade when it comes to camera and switched from Systemcamera to Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro. The way I run it (includes SSD recorder, viewfinder) its about 8000bucks cost (but keep in mind this includes a high end viewfinder + Da Vinci Resolve - used for example for Deadpool 2 - color grading software worth about 1000$). After a few tests I can say I will never ever going back to DSLR/M whatever systemcamera. Yes, it is bigger and heavier compared to non cinema/camcorder cameras. But the benefits ultimatly outweigh the cons .... in comparrison. Lets look at it. To get, lets say about the same quality picture you get with the 3000bucks expensivier BMUMP you go for a cheaper Panasonic GH5. Is it really that much cheaper? GH5 1400$ + Atomos Shugon Inferno 1400$ = 2800$ Hell yes, it is cheaper. Why go for the more expensive camera then. Well, for instance: GH5+Inferno renders you almost unable to run around due to the massive unstable setup vs Ursa Mini Pro, one block of camera anabling you to do whatever you want. Ursa Mini Pro: interchangeble lens mounts -> PL, B4, EF (Canon) and F (Nikon). These are not adapters you put ON the mount but changeble mounts. Adapters tend to srew up the electronics like the digital zoom in the GH4/5. Bigger and more powerfull sensor. I can punch in HD material about 600% with almost NO quality loss. Try that with material from the GH5. ISO is not ISO when comparing cameras. I was devastated when I looked at material shot at a concert with both GH4 and Ursa Mini Pro. Both cameras where set to HD at 800 ISO. While the footage of the GH4 was rendered unuseble the Ursa produced beautiful footage. That said the conclusion is that these cameras can not be compared no matter how much you improve the Systemcamera with aditional gear. Save your money, get a real decent camera.

    I had a hard time accepting some of your results as the entire test was flawed. The GH4 8 bit fed into a 10 bit external recorder *does NOT suddenly turn your footage into 10 Bits !* You have 256 levels of greyscale in 8 bit, *which doesn't suddenly change to 1024 levels just because you fed your 256 level signal into two more bits in your external Atomos recorder.* Unless your camera *outputs a higher level of colour prescision* than what it records internally, then I don't see any advantage, other than getting your footage into an edit ready codec, like Avid DNxHR, or Pro Res.

I bought it for my GH5 that I bought for my diploma thesis and I wanted to use it as a pro travel setup, but the battery life is just stupidly bad. Out of the 5400mAh ones I get only about 15-20 minutes, which is definitely not enough for 5-6 hours filming in the city, before being able to charge them again. So I wasted kind of a lot of money.

    Do i understand it correctly if i say, it is all about the recorder and not so much about the lens you use. I have 2 cameras on my motorcycle (1 in the front and 1 on the back) and have an external little recorder under my saddle. When i look at the video shot from the 2 cameras it is really not good at all, it looks very grainy and not sharp at all. If i would use a different recorder, would that improve the quality ? I can use all the feedback anyone can give me.

    Had a moment before a shoot and decided to watch your video. Made a cup of of coffee and pressed play. And then intro)))

    Wait a second, I bought a GH4 used a couple of years ago and when looking through the menus it turned out that the previous owner had bought the v log activation for it. But does that not give any advantages compared to the cinelike d when recording internally?

      The gh4 was geared to be more of a cinema camera within the confines of it still being part of the gh line. No stabilisation, native sdi, 10bit video, great preamp. So, if you are using it for video, it's not expected to use internal recording unless you're going for broadcast. The Grand Tour uses the GH4 in 8bit for this reason. The camera fits into professional settings in a way that the GH5 and GH5s can't. It's still my favourite consumer camera for video work with blackmagic's pocket 4k coming second.
      To answer the question directly, if you're shooting internally, V-log L will degrade your footage as opposed to cinelike d.
