- Almost all new cameras include impressive video features, but for the best results you'll often need an off-camera recorder. Chris and Jordan take a look at the brand new Ninja V from Atomos, and explain why it might just be one of the most useful tools you can add to your camera.

I've had the Ninja Inferno for about a year now and loved it. Ninja V seems like a solid small-form-factor alternative, and the NDI & timecode (and hopefully SDI eventually?) add-ons are super clutch. Wish I could pick one up to play with.
Congratulations to Jordan for receiving the coveted PCND certification!
He's deserved it!
Nearly took a decade!
Andy : Just kidding, see the 5:41 mark.
"Professional Chris Nicholls Documentarian" LOL
When Chris says his name i always hear "Christicles" .. I like it as a nickname for Chris :D
Oh, I've always heard it as "Christicles". I guess you can see what I thought it sounded like.
Dear Jordan, I absolutely want to see more video content. In fact I want Chris to only appear halfway through the video telling us he’s ‘the photoguy’ and we know what that means. :) Sincerely.
Thank you tons for making all these reviews, yours are very down to earth and with no drama like I see elsewhere. Thanks!
Yes, more video content, please....
Those fall colours are amazing. Great video, thanks.
I love both photography and video content!
Easily the best review of this out there. Thank you.
Amazing production values here for a review - the unqiue introductory wide shot at 0:23, the selection of a perfect natural backdrop, and the audio is on point - I'm guessing that's a lav on Chris' jacket.
Very well done as usual.... really enjoy watching your reviews!
I'm down for an increase in video talk ;)
Debating buying one to record the output of my Roland video switcher...
Guys you should do a episode in Larch valley during autumn time. Amazing views !! Great episode as usual.
Just noticed that you fixed that audio crack during the beatsuite logo, gj Jordan!
You guys are awesome. I wish I could shoot with you two! Thanks for all you do!
Very informative. MORE VIDEO stuff..... Chris is great, but more video stuff please!!
Excellent review! That unit looks awesome. What mics/ audio recorder would you guys recommend for this type of work?
Depends on budget and needs. Sit down interview an inexpensive AT lav works great, better sound comes from a shotgun or condenser mic like the Rode NTG3 or AT 4053b. Film work, boom talent gives best sound.
So is that a promotion or demotion Chris?
LOL - love Jordan's new title! Want more content of both types.
You guys uploaded this at 1am Calgary time, go to bed!
I know this because I'm in the same time-zone and slapped myself awake before watching this...
I am thinking the Sony a9 w/Ninja V would have a special advantage for run and gun hybrid shooters. Because the a9 is blackout free while shooting photos, you should be able to record video & photos simultaneously. That could be very useful for news shooters! Can anyone verify that this is possible?
Thank you Jordan and Chris for your always great reviews and good spirit 👍😀 by the way, I hope you will do your fantastic Christmas episode with the best and bad gear of the year. Those are epic ! 😀
They did, with an audience and terrible white board I couldn't read.
Love your tutorials man! Planning to but Atomos and your video pumped me up even more :D
You're mentioning the brilliant autofocus on the Sony A7iii. I've been using both the Flame and the Ninja V on my A7iii and just FYI the face recognition autofocus does not work when connecting an HDMI monitor/recorder. It still has good autofocus features and it hasn't been much of a problem for me, but there is a difference you may want to be aware of.
I just want more content from you guys, I watch it all anyway 😇
Loving this. Hey need more video content. Can you guys do the BMPCC 4K vs GH5S vs XT3? No one seems to be comparing those only the BMPCC 4K vs GH5. You could be ahead of the curve.
Amazing review, thanks! Does it a have a nine-grid that helps frame the shot? It's a super basic feature but not sure if it has
You mean like a rule of thirds dividing line sort of thing? If so, I haven't seen it yet on my own unit.
Thanks for the reply. Yes. Those 9 squares.. It's a feature found even on the cheapest external monitors, really weird Atomos didn't include it.
No problem, Linus. I just checked, and it doesn't have those rule of thirds lines. Funny enough, I set my a7S II (while the Ninja V is off) to show those grid lines. They appear on the back of the camera, but once you turn on the Atomos, those grid lines disappear on the back of the a7S II.
@@huyked thanks for the info! Wow, that's frustrating. I shoot product videos and I always need to line them up perfectly (almost). I use Sony A7 III.
@@TechLineHD
No worries. Glad I can verify for you. But they do have many aspect-ratio crop-guides (2.41, 2.35, 1.9, 1.85, 4:3). The screen is already 16:9, but when you first hit the onscreen button, it goes to 16:9, this showing a center x/cross in the center, and also has center dash marks on the four sides. Basically it splits the screen into four quadrants; just the lines don't go all the way across the screen.
I noticed your channel. Congrats on being so close to 100,000 subs!!! Wow. Hard work has its rewards. :) Getting good money for more toys from RUclips?
My boss has around 120,000 subs. He got his silver play button recently. It took years to build up the following. His channel is SDLuxuryListings. I'm one of the cameramen.
how does the 5 inch compare to the 7 inch ninja flame or inferno?
I'd love to see more video content to go along with the traditional stuff. :)
Thanks for the review. I certainly would like to see Jordan making more video reviews. Especially 'How To' videos. Many of the latest mirrorless cameras are making their cameras very capable video capturing tools as well as for photography. I am a reasonably accomplished amateur photographer but would class my videography skills as 'beginner' at best. I have just purchased a Sony A7RIII and XT3 (retirement purchase). I hopefully will now have the time to devote to my hobbies, yet video (and audio) capturing (let alone editing!) is a whole new world......any help will be gratefully received and avidly devoured.
Hey Brian, If you're just starting with videography try the D4Darious channel. It's mostly about film making but it jumps you up a step or two so when you decide to watch other tutorials you're always ahead of the game and understand why you're actually learning - helped me enormously.
Ivor Kutyalegof thank you. I will certainly check the channel out!
I’d love to see more on video workflows, from picture profiles to LUTs, gamma curves, round up of and preferred Color correction software and tools, and of course NLE’s. It’s a bit of a maze out there
Great video as usual. It does look like a great piece of kit.
Great review! And YES! More Video!!!
Excellent video. Yes, Jordan! More video! Would it be possible to show a complete bts of one of your own reviews? Planing, shooting, cutting and grading. What are the challenges on right exposure when shooting log? Thanks. Keep on! 😁
Yes to BTS.
Fan noise has been mentioned in other reviews. Has anyone recorded it to see how prevalent it is? Also curious if this is really worth it for A7iii shooters. I'm assuming for punch ins (4K footage, 1080 timeline) I would see an uptick in quality just because of bit rate?
I recorded a video using it close by on my desk, and my lav mic did pick up a little noise. I'd avoid using it in conjunction with an on-camera shotgun mic, but for most other purposes, it shouldn't be an issue.
Interesting you mentioned that there isnt that much of a difference shooting with or without the Ninja V on a XT3. But you only talked about image quality, what about workflow? Avoiding the internal H265 codec could be a huge plus, especially when editing in premiere (it doesnt handle h265 too well as I heard). Could be a huge plus for the other cameras aswell, especially considering you can record to SSD
Absolutely! All-I ProRes or DNxHD is much easier on your editing system, as long as you're OK with the larger files.
@@thatjordandrake Here's something weird. I just got my Ninja V a couple of days ago and I'm trying to dial in my settings and figure out my new workflow (I shoot on a7R3 and a little on a6500). I was excited to see how much better Premiere ran on ProRes... So I do my tests, recording the same sequence each time with different settings. then go into post and pull them into Premiere (I edit on an Alienware with 32GB mem, GTX-1080 (yes on a laptop), 3 SSD's (2 are Samsung 960Pro NVMe) and laptop is 4K (and second monitor is LG curve 37" ultrawide). I drop one of the "ProRes" files from the Ninja V on a timeline, and then hit play. It plays somewhat ok the first time, but after that, it is too painful, it stops/starts, goes back some frames, audio drops, etc... wth? So I go look at the Sequence Settings, and Premiere has it as a DNxHD type? I figured I must have hit the wrong option on the Ninja V, but when I look DNxHD is even enabled yet (apparently you have to get an activation code, until then it isn't working). also, I always separate my O/S, from my NLE app, from the Media, and from Scratch. I had all of those "ProRes" files on a super fast 960Pro NVMe (which goes up to 3,500 MBytes/s (not bits, bytes)), yet it still has issues replaying. The Internal codecs from a7R3 as AVCS at 100mbps mp4's run just fine.. I even tried 24fps vs 60fps, and no difference in performance, though file sizes changed. I am trying to nail down this issue and determine the best settings for the Ninja V with my a7R3. I shoot videos in the wilderness of my doing landscape, wildlife, astro, backpacking/hammocking stuff. I am trying to get where I stop having to carry around the a6500 with sigma 16 f/1.4, another tripod, and a ton of fw-50 batteries which the a6500 eats like halloween candy when shooting 4K or 120fps slowmo. My goal is to completely use my a7R3 for both the photography AND most of the video work (still doing aerial with Mavic Air obviously, but for the few times I need to film me using the a7R3 I was going to start using my Note9 and/or my Mavic Air rubber banded to a 9oz tripod I have which I always seem to have 3 batteries with 25-30% battery left on). The Ninja V was also going to be how I start capturing the moments leading up to the shots (the moments before the Bald Eagle takes off, the moments before the light is perfect for the landscape shots, and in both of these cases, also show all of the settings on the screen). I feel this will be a much better experience then holding up a little RX0 or my cell phone to the back of the camera, plus I'm busy right at the moment of the shot being taken. All that being said though, I still would like to dial in the settings better. At this point I'm not sure what other settings to try here. To be honest, for the above use case I am describing, a 1080P codec would be just fine and would be leaps and bounds better than my current shaky hand held glimpse of the camera's screen. But I was hoping to grab useable 4K footage. And I will be shooting a documentary and some short films early next year, and for those I will need to get this figured out. I was really surprised to see these ProRes files (btw I did eventually activate DNxHD and did similar test) fall down in my NLE. I'm still looking for good user guides, best practices, etc.
Afraid, I'm not going to much help there. After a half decade of struggles, I finally unsubbed from Adobe CC. I always had trouble with native 4K playback on my Macbook Pro, so after running two NLEs for a while, I went to a Final Cut Pro X exclusively. I'd maybe shoot a message to my man Max Yuryev. He has the answers to everything about optimizing an NLE, video anything, and generally being one of the most likeable people on the entire internet.
@@thatjordandrake totally agree with Max Yurev comment and it sucks how he was demonized and is getting nowhere after months reaching out to Google/RUclips). I'm confident I have my Premiere tweaked as good as it can be. I was really let down to see ProRes HQ not improving the editing performance of my post workflow. I dont have to use the videos from the Ninja V as my final video sources, so for the footage where I show my camera settings and/or what lead to the photos I show I will use the Ninja V ProRes... what I'm doing to improve my post editing workflow performance is use the proxy option on my a7R3. Supposedly it will send your 4k footage to your main UHS-II card and a 720p proxy copy to your uhs-I card... supposedly when you load these into Premiere they use the 720p proxy to speed up editing, but at render time it goes to the 4k files. I know you can generate proxies with Premiere, but it takes time on hours of footage, whereas you can generate them on the fly on your camera
Thanks! great video! I appreciated it. Does this small thing records to SD card as well as SSD?
Awesome video. I’m looking into this to go with my Sony RX100VA. Mostly to record longer 4K footage without the over heating. Do you think this would be a good fit and what cage do you recommend? Thanks again for the overview.
Thanks for a nice review, man. I initially bought an Atomos Shogun Inferno recorder from B&H with power pack and a 2TB SSD, after I was told by the salesperson that I could record 4k 60 fps to this recorder, using my Canon 1Dx mark ii. Long story short, he was dead wrong, and as I found out, my camera doesn't even output ANY 4k signal, so I am hoping you would be able to help me answer a single question (since I am a brand new kid on the block when it comes to external monitors/recorders).
Since I am shooting my videos with Canon 1Dx mark ii, and I like my footage in 4k 60 fps, and since I can't externally record 4k 60 fps using this camera, the next best thing is to make the internal recording with 4k 60 fps, and here is my question...
If I am recording internally 4k 60 fps on my 1Dx ii, do I need a monitor that's capable of displaying 4k 60 fps?
In other words, if I purchase a monitor that (for example) is only capable of displaying 4k 30 fps, (or even is only capable of displaying 1080 60 fps), would I still be able to make the internal 4k 60 fps recording, while monitoring the recording in progress on an external monitor for focus, and overall image analysis? Thank you.
Great review guys!
I would like a review for the Atomos Shinobi. You guys are doing great. Thank you.
Jordan, I could see you were sitting on a log but do you shoot log on the GH5?
Sometimes. Depends on the light. This was an overcast day, so I just used the wonderful Like-709 profile.
Hmmm, there are some channels now comparing footage from the GH5 vs Canon EOS R. They are showing log footage of both sided by side, but the graded GH5 looks horrible. I think the GH5 expert was a wanker who didn't know what he was doing. Your footage always looks great. You should have done the comparison. The reason I asked.
Thanks for the review. For the Fuji X-T2/3, what do you prever, the Ninja V or the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K and why???
Great review guys. Hilarious caption under Jordan's name @5:41 .
Hey for xt3 the h265 files are extremely hard to edit so it gives us prores so that we can edit easily
More video stuff sounds great!
Would this be an advantageous addition to an A7S2 recording rig? I prefer to do lots of color grading and unfortunately the footage from the camera that I've shot in the past (internally) struggles largely with color clipping/bitrate blockiness and noise.
I’d love to see more video content!
Yes, more Jordan, please!
An important note for gh5 gh5s users in anamorphic mode: The Atomos Ninja V seem to have a huge limitation: in 50/60P mode 4:3, the display does not want to display or record full screen, so you will have a small output on screen and also loose the x2 enlarger to focus while recording. Someone reported about the fan noise as well on the fan noise. Seriously, I was about to order this because the main reason I wanted this was for anamorphic mode but it seems it has some hidden flaws which I cannot live with.
Awesome review!
You guys do a good job, and more about photography!
One of things that you missed and I see missed on a number of these reviews, ProRes recording means fast easy editing with no proxies. That is a huge time saver and money saver for me.
Hi Jordan and Chris! One question: can I record video in a external device and in the SD at the same time? (Fujifilm X-T3) Thanks! And... YES! More video content please🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing the review. Would you be able to mention what are the benefits of using this if I am shooting with a Sony A1? Thanks in advance.
Okay, now we're talking. I'll looking to save up for this unit.
More in depth video reviews, what it's like for jordan using these cameras on the road!
Love the content! What are you guys using for audio for this video??
About the audio, I saw the z7 preview and you used the blackmagic 4k monitor for that, how is the sound quality on it
A7siii Still not announced.
Would you be doing a review of the Zeiss ZX1 full frame camera?
no mention of whether those cameras LCD black out when using the hdmi... like sony does. . particularly the x-t3. (im trying to research if x-t4 does )
Thanks for another helpful review guys. At around the 2:00 mark it's mentioned that it can be taken off camera remotely and the signal can be sent wirelessly for others to view, can you please give more details about this please?
I'm new in video and want to know how do I record perfect audio with the Atomos Ninja V? Thanks!!!
Question.. Would it make a difference in quality if i use it with my sony a7sii?
Any thoughts on using this with an older camera that's outputting 1080P like the Canon 5D Mark IV? We are looking for a monitor and this seems like the best option even if we don't use the external recording. But curious if we record 1080p ProRES how much of a difference we might notice. Thanks for the great review.
That 7 Kingdoms music makes me nostalgic!
I have an A7II and I'm planning to buy atomos ninja v in near future. I thought that i will be able to shoot 10bit prores 422 with the camera. Is this correct?
More video content!!! Definitely.
Can you use tap focus on the atomos ninja v? (Not the focus peaking)
I'm actually curious how you get such great audio out there in the woods. Can you recommend what I should do to get such good audio? thanks
So how do you transfer video from the ssd. Do you have to remove the ssd or is there a connection. How to get it on the Mac?
I loved Chris's "Boo!" from off-camera, but I love seeing Jordan, too. Can we just get more of everything content? DPReview should be able to afford cloning, right?
Jordan - I'm planning on buying a Nikon Z6 - I mainly shoot 1080p is this still worth getting.
Any chance we can get a tutorial on how to grade log files?
Great Review guys! Jordan how it work With the Olympus em1 iii prores?
Does this record 4k60 internally say on a Sony a6500 using a Samsung evo 860 ssd
Is anyone having trouble being able to change the fps on the monitor? I'm using the a6500 and it won't allow me to change fps..
Hi thankx for this great informative video.
What Maximum FPS and Resolution I can get if attach it with canon c100 mark 1 ??
I love that ending part.. it's entertaining
0:11 Could you link to that exact HDMI to microHDMI cable you guys are using (I see they're good for UHD to 23.98). I'm looking for an alternative to the one Atomos sells for $99, that is HDMI 2.0a (yes, "a", is an update; there's actually 2.0b, and higher specified cables). I think Atomos' coiled cable is good up to 4K60.
I think the specs for those are supposed to work for HDR. If your cables specs work for 4K without limitations, it would be great!
Great video :) I actually bought one last week and I love it. Now I can record 8bit 4:2:2 on my a6500. Quick question: is there a way to export my edited videos in 4:2:2? Or is the benefit only for editing. Thanks :)
Export Prores or DNx
Where can you buy the red Atom X miniSSD? Can't find anywhere? on the website they only show gray Atom X.
Hi guys I have a Sony 7s mark1 and I was wondering if I should buy the ninja V or the ninja flame, what would be your recommendation?.
Thanks
Can you get a sun shade for this? Is that a separate purchase?
@7:45 Jordan was talking about the Sony A7S III? 🤔 ..perhaps he has one already but can't talk about it.
I was wondering the same as well.
He might but he would be definitely under an NDA about it
But he said about no flip screen tho
He's talking about existing Sony cameras. The video footage shown after he says it was taken with A7III. If he's really under an NDA and has seen the camera, he can't talk about actual specs for A7sIII.
no
Can the GH5 shoot 120fps 10bit? With the Atomos?
Are you guys planning on switching to the XT-3?
which Atomos would you guys suggest for me using the Nikon D850? Atomos V or Shinobi? Thanks
Hello, thanks for the Video.
I Have a Question, i just got my Ninja V...i put in an older SSD..but no recognizing..Do you think that an Samsung 860 Evo 500GB should work and be enough or do i have to buy the Pro ??Thanks for the answer!
What if I have something like a Nikon D4s. Will this help?
Does the Ninja apply the LUT to the recording it saves, or only for viewing on the monitor?
When it comes to post-production, what is the minimum number of RAM and Intel Core that I need in order to edit those large files that the Atomos records?
What is the mic you guys are using? The sound is so crispy 😍
How this works with EOS R colour assistant when recording via HDMI in 10 Bit?
hello all, i just bought atomos 5 yesterday it's getting really hot, i called the shop where i bought and they change the unit and even the new one its getting too hot !!!! any one have the same problem ?
What's the audio cable shown at 5:04? Any specific name or link? Thanks.
Can anyone comment on what the battery life of this is if it is used as a monitor only and not a recorder. Thanks
Yes, yes, yes...I want to see more video content
great video - more videos pleaaaassseeee
Hi, can we record to samsung t5 instead to sd card or ninja. Thanks in advance
