    Two quick notes!
    1. A couple times I say "waveform" when referring to the spiky bits. That's actually a histogram. 😜
    2. Special thank you to Alister Chapman for letting me bounce some ideas off of him for this video. 🙏
    *Update: 3. I've uploaded a follow-up video answering some of your questions about the Log/HDR toggle: ruclips.net/video/kduSZbNKNSs/видео.html

      Question if you manage to find time! Leeming luts to color correct HLG footage on the sony cameras works great but is there any tricks would would recommend for the exposure when vlogging outdoors? Doing it manually is working 90% of the time but cannot seem to find a way to let the camera take control of anything to help when moving between the sun and shade without it under exposing everything.

    Gerald, I'm a 30 year career IT professional who has recently made a leap of faith from the toxic world of IT to my passion of creating and filmmaking. Definitely in crawling mode here but the more I shoot the more I enjoy the art.
    I have found that because of my tech background, i've been learning fast as the technology is pretty easy for me to understand. Throughout my career I always had a saying, "Ask the right person, the right question, and always question the answers you get - truth is hard to come by any other way." I was quite known for this philosophy.
    I've recently discovered your channel, and I have to tell you (no shock to you as your huge following no doubt testifies to) that you are speaking my language, and your information is beyond reproach. I think if I had more people like you working for/with me in my IT career I would have stuck around longer.
    I've learned more from you in the past few days then any other creator on youtube! Thank you so much for what you do! Someday, when I start making money, i'm planning on coming back around and fully supporting people like you who got me off the ground. I wish I could buy up all your merch.... but still in "Starving Artist Mode".
    But THANK YOU for the level of effort and time that you put into your videos. You are raising everyones game, and you just can't put a price on that! My Undone quote for consideration, haha - "You are the gift that keeps on giving!" :-)

    I wish the Ninja V had "OVERLAY"
    An overlay feather is a 20% to 50% occupancy of a previously recorded video
    So you can line up the new video in the exact same spot
    This is useful for when you want to do stop motion or make things disappear and /or reappear
    Please influence ATOMOS to add this feature in a future firmware update
    Best regards, Rick

    Nice upgrade from atomos!
    As far as your question about deleting luts, the only way I accidentally did it was loading an incompatible LUT into the Atomos. When you get the message "Error Loading LUT file" it actually deletes the LUT in that slot!

    Excellent stuff Gerald, downloading right away now along with your LUT.
    I've been editing video from the recorder from F-LOG without converting to full range on my clips in resolve and indeed wondering why I'm seeing clipping where I was sure none existed so this is great!
    Quick question: Should I favour using your LOG>LEGAL Lut over say the Fuji X-T3 Flog > Rec 709, (or FLOG > Eterna) profiles which I use in resolve as a basis for grading and have currently installed on the monitor? If you can advise, I'd be very grateful!

  • @RickTorres

    This is so timely for me, Gerald. I was up late last night trying to figure why my Fuji X-T3 Eterna profile Ninja V recording was more saturated than the SD recording . Thanks for the Full to Legal LUT and stay safe out there!

    • @timotuunanen6450
      @timotuunanen6450 4 года назад

      This is interesting. Did you review your footage on the screen of your X-T3 and Ninja V, or on your computer? I did some testing today by shooting F-Log and Eterna using Legalize:On/Off and found out that in case of X-T3, I need to set Legalize:On regardless if I am shooting F-Log or Eterna. Otherwise my Eterna footage gets crushed. I reviewed my footage in Resolve.

    • @RickTorres
      @RickTorres 4 года назад

      @@timotuunanen6450 Yes, I reviewed my footage on my computer using FCPX. Once I loaded Gerald's Full to Legal LUT on my Ninja V, I made sure the the "During Record" was active on the LUTs screen-- a red "f" circle will flash on & off on the left side of the Ninja V telling you it's on. Once I compared the footage, the Ninja V recording looked like the Eterna footage I'm used to seeing on my SD cards. Legalize:OnOff was not necessary.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  4 года назад +2

      Yes, in the case of the Fuji it seems to output all profiles as full, including Eterna. So, yes, legalize would be useful for Eterna as well as F-Log in this case. Or you can do the conversion in post. Of course, again, if using Resolve, it's not necessary as you can just switch the clip attributes to Full in post and record without the legalize option on.

    Hey Gerald (or anyone reading this), let me see if I got my workflow right, shooting in-camera Canon C Log w/ the Ninja V recording externally:
    1.) Set Ninja V to record with Legalize OFF (unless I'm live streaming, etc) to leave the C Log full range
    (Premiere Pro attempts to scale this, but I'll fix this later during export with that special conversation LUT you mentioned)
    2.) Apply the LUT for converting C Log to Rec 709 obtained from Canon's website for C Log
    3.) Color correct using my X-Rite Passport reference card, then tweak for creative looks etc
    4.) Export my video using that special conversion LUT you can find online which brings my colors back into the Legal/Limited range so when I go to upload my video to RUclips it won't scale it funny and have the "extra contrasty" look
    Sound about right?
    Because they didn't go the metadata route we still have to use that special conversion LUT at the end to fix Premiere Pro's incorrect scaling, yes?

  • @lancehaoyuanli1094
    @lancehaoyuanli1094 4 года назад +2

    I really wish there is a input range setting comming instead of this kind of internal transform lut. So far my solution is to use LUT Calc and set the input and output ranges, so that I can combine a color space transform with a range transform into one LUT for monitoring. I also apply that exact same LUT before any other color grading so I don't need to manually set the ranges in Resolve.

  • @MarcusHutsell
    @MarcusHutsell Год назад

    So, I had a question Gerald, as I have come across a similar issue with Decimator MD-HX model SDI/HDMI converters. By default on the Decimator MD-HX, if you use the SDI-to-HDMI conversion, it actually converts from whatever is sent down the SDI line (which should be in the YCbCr “legal” video range as spec’d by SDI standards,) into RGB444 on the Decimator for the HDMI output. I’m assuming Decimator decided to make that RGB444 the default because many people may be using the MD-HX for plugging in a computer monitor to the HDMI output, thereby *usually needing/wanting it in an RGB color space. And, from what I understand…the RGB color space is based on FULL legal levels.
    Therefore, using the default setting on a Decimator MD-HX, the Sdi>HDMI conversion goes from legal to full….and of course we see an immediate crushing of blacks and potential clipping it whites.
    However, you can tell the Decimator’s HDMI output to switch to outputting either YCbCr444 or YCbCr422…keeping the SDI signal in the YCbCr/legal range, and then the signal looks the same on the screen and in the waveforms as it does upstream when viewing the SDI signal only.
    So….that’s a lot of backstory for my REAL question, because I wanted to explain/confirm that RGB is running on “full” levels, not “legal” levels.
    And, if RGB is “full,” then…..(the real question):
    When using an Atomos Ninja/Shogun…and outputting from a laptop (say an Apple MacBook Pro) and an hdmi cable over to a ninja/Shogun….
    #1, ARE most computer screens and video outputs on laptops/computers running in RGB “Full” levels?
    And #2, if so, if we use a Ninja to record the video output from our computers shouldn’t we ALSO use the Legalize function?
    The reason I ask is because I often use my Ninja as a secondary video output when editing/color correcting my videos and for reference when watching other videos (like yours), and the contrast is WAY more on the ninja than on any computer screen, even when mirrored. So I often try to find a happy medium between computer screen/ninja.
    But, wouldn’t “legalizing” the computers output be proper if it’s in RGB??

Or are you saying you get better results than camera internally when legalize is on, even when not shooting log? (even though it will alter how color correcting affects it). You can review it with the „play“-button. When you are in playback-mode you can tip on the filename on the upper righthand side. There you find the list with all your recorded files.
    When you enter the „edit“-menu (blue mark on the lower lefthand side) and then tap the filename you can select a file and then mark it with thumb up or thumb down.
    The reject option is the delete option then after that there is a delete option because the file is rejected. Thanks!

    Don't know if this is of any use... found it on the Production Hub website, and I quote..
    "Using a compatible Atomos recorder such as the Ninja Inferno or Sumo19, you can record and burn in the HLG and REC.2020 colour gamut metadata directly into the video clip at the point of acquisition, from cameras such as the Panasonic GH5 and Sony FS5. This metadata is then automatically recognised by FCP X 10.4 when the clip is imported. HDR project settings can also be automatically generated when an Atomos HLG clip is dropped in. The metadata stays all the way through the pipeline right to export using Compressor, and on to video sharing platforms like RUclips and Vimeo. The whole process from capture to export and delivery can now be done simply in HLG."

Why would i use this legalize option if the exported video is already limited? Is the legalize option actually converting the slog footage from video to full in the Ninja? Is that what that new feature does?

    For me when shooting V-log with my Lumix S1 + Ninja V there is no issue with levels both files look the same, but when I shoot Cine-D or other profiles like Standard, Natural it is more contrasty and saturated in Ninja than in camera.This is because the Atomos treats the full levels as video levels. You said not to use the new option for this files, so what to do?Put a custom LUT to see it properly in the Atomos and then convert in Davince as full levels? It love the rule of thirds grid but for most of people that use 2.35 crop it is unusable. It wold be nice if they can make 2,35 crop + rule of thirds grid.

    This sounds great. You mentioned don't ever use this on a normal profile, only use on the log profiles. I agree definitely - however on the xt3, I believe the same value remapping happens on a normal profile like eterna. The image is very contrasted on the ninja compared to internal - the same way you fixed the log footage in davinci but setting the range to full was how I got round this. I haven't had a chance to test this yet but I reckon this legalise option will help with normal recording profiles on the xt3 too. Cheers for this video.
