Nice video! Couple of points though - the main reason to use PRORES is that it's an editing codec i.e. it's very fast to work with in an editor because you are trading CPU power for storage. Scrubbing through the video and rendering will be dramatically faster. There is no point showing different bitrates and colour depths on a RUclips video, when it's on RUclips - it's 8 bit / 8Mb/s (HD). The only reason to keep a more data rate and bit depth around is to give you more dynamic range to play with in the edit. Your audio on that mic outside sounded great btw.
@@BryceKoebel By the way, Atomos has really dropped the ball with their activation nonsense. I just spent the last 5 days trying to get ProRes RAW working on my Ninja. I just in the process of boxing it up for return. It doesn't work!

Check the video again as I did. He mentions A73 first and then his upgrade to A7S3. He made all valid points. Many will get a monitor for viewing and stick with the A7S3 Codec which is excellent. The Shinobi and Ninja V are good based on your camera's ability. I personally record in 8 bit and use a Shinobi for viewing and visual tools. 10 bit is definitely a pro requirement to get the best results.
It depends on the gear you pair it with. For example, I just ordered a Ninja V+ for my new Canon R6II. For that camera, it allows 6k 60 Raw recording that's not available internally. Also from what I've heard, Canon codecs are hard to edit so ProRes might be easier. And lastly, RAW recording offers more color info and dynamic range in some cameras. If it indeed improves dynamic range on the R6II, then there are many benefits to a Ninja vs a monitor only (like SmallHD).

@@BryceKoebel but did u use an external monitor with recording internally not like with the atomos ninja V because thats when this problem came for people? Yes it is! With the A7III there is only one option, and that’s the Ninja V, however it’s only some kind of a workaround and only works when recording externally and in 4K (here’s how: ruclips.net/video/kLn8gAGHrDk/видео.html). But I still think that only for having face detection in 4K this monitor setup is way to expensive! And not to forget that 1000nits on a bright sunny day is quite weak and also the fans are too loud which can be a problem when using mics close to the monitor, as Bryce mentioned it drains the biggest Sony batteries way too fast (and they are not cheap), plus you won’t even get 10bit 4:2:2 externally. So in my opinion I would save that money and spend on much useful gears.
You look at the sittuation now? Samsung quit making 860 pro drives, and all your left with is a sony or angelbird option, with over inflated mac prices. I just bought the ninja Ultra, and luckly i have a few 860 pros.
I have had the same questions when using it with my Z6II. Its nice but did I waste $500? Its create to see you video on a larger screen but most of my sequences are not 30 mins long and I don't do a lot of interviews. As you said, if I did a lot of coloring but I don't. Now, it does look cool when shooting for a client, I will give it that. Yeah, its complicated.

Great video, thank you
so can I use this with my canon 90d? and my much older 70d ?
Yup as long as you have an HDMI port
Does it means i can record 4k 4:2:2 on my sony a7c?
Because a7c can't
No it doesn’t upgrade the colour specs. Basically you get a less compressed file, so technically yes it will colour grade easier, but it will look the same.
This video is the poster child of youtube videos that ask a question but never have an answer.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Very insightful. Thank you!
oh man , your video so good and at the end i have to add this monitor to my wishtlist, thanks
does the AF face detection problem when connected to an external monitor still a problem on the A7III?
So I haven’t had a problem with face detection, but it can be finicky. For example, you can’t see the face detect box on the cameras screen, and when you record the screen goes black. It’s kinda weird but it’s not a huge issue.
@@BryceKoebel but did u use an external monitor with recording internally not like with the atomos ninja V because thats when this problem came for people? Im just curious because if thats a problem i am saving for the ninja V if not im buying the shinobi because i am fint with the internal recording
100% agree 🙌🏻
You look at the sittuation now? Samsung quit making 860 pro drives, and all your left with is a sony or angelbird option, with over inflated mac prices. I just bought the ninja Ultra, and luckly i have a few 860 pros.
I definitely think you just have to use this more.
You’re probably right
Damn good video clearing a lot of doubts I had! Thank you!
I don’t. I’m selling mine because it doesn’t record ProRes 120fps
You should drop an affiliate link to this monitor, just an idea. Helpful video.
Done!! Thanks for reminding me :)
@@BryceKoebel anytime.
You should see my Canon in 8K60 LT. 128 GB is 3 minutes.... You would be really sad lol
nice video , I got mine to see where my focus is specially in sports
I have the same feelings with the predominance of feelings towards " I hate it" :)
Thanks for this. 😊
Enjoyed the review man!
Thanks 😊 🙌🏻
Great video!
Im getting by just fine without one. These days with unlimited recording and manageable codecs on Canons the justification for an atomos has evaporated.
💯 agree
I got the kangaroo warning ⚠️ and the auto cooling is already not working on my Atomos ninja v
Eyyyyy no way you live in Nanaimo ! I love that city .
I actually live in Vancouver but I go there often for dance!!
Hey Bryce,
Nice video. Got me rolling at @9:09.
Here’s evolution of you and N5:
Bryce: You’re weirdo man
N5: I know
Bryce: But I kinda like your weirdo-ness
N5: I know
Bryce: Okay I can still work with your weirdo-ness
N5: I know
Bryce: I’m definitely keeping your weirdo-ness
N5: I know
At least N5 is constant. Hahahahaha! 🤣 🤪 😝
The first problem that you are Having in justifying the purchase is you referring to it as a monitor it is not just a monitor it is a recorder
Should you have gotten it? I HAVE
TO KNOW!!!
😅 ok ok ok
The pros:
1. Great screen + functionality
2. Recording comes in handy BUT very rarely am I using it. Like I don’t even think I will use it very often.
Cons:
1. Heavy
2. Battery sucks even with 970 batteries
3. Recording files are massive so I still record internally and save those files
4. The battery being on the right side can cause it to feel weird
Low key I might sell it 🙃 I’m looking at portkeys or something that allows you to control your camera
@@BryceKoebel amen 🙏🏼 thanks for sharing these insights 🫶🏼
I think its the best pain in the butt you cant live w or w/o🎉
How many times can someone say “like” in a single video?
You should make a video about that. I bet people would like that 😉
Why Does Everyone Love The Atomos Ninja V....? I reckon it's the external screen.
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! Almost wasted my money.
😂
the thumnail makes me click bro lmao
Hahaha 😂
SSDeeznuts
If I drank every time you said “like” I wouldn’t even be able to write this comment because I’d be comatose
I promise I've gotten better 😂
@@BryceKoebel I’ll drink to that 🤣
Thumbnail made me click
Yuhhh 😂😂😂
I just got a new Ninja, hoping it can help me with the white balance issues that have been bothering me.

To be honest, I hate it.
Aight then
