For clarity, when I said "processed into HDR", I mean that it converts the way you monitor the image into the HDR monitoring configuration of your choosing. As far as I know there is no way to "bake in" the HDR conversion into the file, even though the manual says "record, preview and review using HDR". You can bake in LUTs, and I also think you can convert the signal coming out of the HDMI output port to be HDR, but it shouldn't affect your log recordings on the SSD--other than the fact that it removes options like "Legalize". Happy shooting! 🤓👍
Appreciate the follow-up. I don't think using the Input->Camera Output->Log/HDR setting is WRONG, it can be pretty useful to monitor in Rec709 (or PQ if that's where you're headed), especially if you don't have a Log to Rec709 LUT (which was the case for the Z6 until not long ago). It doesn't modify the recorded file in any way (as far as I can tell) and at least with the current firmware, it records the same levels as turning Legalize off (as one would expect), ie full/data. That said, I understand the click appeal of the ... firmer... wording 😜
Man your videos are great thanks for the info. can you provide a video soon different ways to load luts or get your footage off your Ninja V ? thanks again
Dude, this is the most comprehensive guide to my brand new ninja V and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. I found you through camera conspiracies and you two have now become my two favorite channels!
I consider myself a professional as I have been doing video production work for about 13 years now...but then I watch your videos and I feel like a beginner again! Love your knowledge....I come to your site often for tips and your opinions on a wide range of things. Bravo! I just got the Ninja V for my Z cam e2-m4. Would love for you to do a review of the Z cam e2 series
Andrew Stewart I suppose it comes down to your current and future needs.. I bought a Ninja V for the monitoring and perhaps recording with current or future camera. If only for monitoring the Atomos Shinobi is an obvious choice. HDR monitoring in PQ for instance to see all of the image as you will likely grade is a great thing. I record prores on the Atomos Ninja V. I think it’s marginally better to grade log than my internal 150 mbps codec. I might be imagining it, but I think it’s true.. but if I pick up a new Nikon Z6 or other new camera system in 2020/2021 that may have ProResRaw... then my purchase will fully utilized. Currently? I think it’s better though with my computer/codec comparison my laptop handles both formats easily, but I know the external is capable of handling more grading in post.. even from an 8 bit source...... But yes.. for 8 bit source it’s biggest benefit is monitoring in HDR/PQ log etc. and perhaps the grading is better in post?
@@alexshdvideo Interesting; I was looking at the AndyCine A6 Plus which seems like a great value, but the Shinobi isn't that much more and presumably better in some way. As a hobbyist I definitely can't justify $650+ for the Ninja everyone loves. Thanks for the idea!
Just got my new Ninja v last Thursday. I was saving for a lens, when my church asked if I could film the Sunday service on Friday. I have an A7III, so I knew there was a thirty minute time limit, so... I didn’t get the lens that’s not shipping yet and bought the Ninja v instead. Falling in love with this thing. Friday’s recording ran this morning at 10:30 am AZ time. Without a hitch. I was originally nervous because when I tried playing the clip from the hard drive, I got a delay after 5 seconds of play. I set it to record prores lt. so after pulling into a fcpx project and compiling to mp4 it was completely in sync. So that was good. Why In this day and age that Atomos doesn’t have a forum on its site is beyond me. If I could have done a search, it would have put my brain at ease. Thanks for everything by the way. I don’t miss a one...;-)

Very helpful video. Most products we buy that are easy to use have huge booklets full of information we hardly read. But the lack of information manuals when buying Atomos products is just ridiculous.
Hi Gerald! Can you please make a video explaining the Knee point and slope in HLG3 profile in Sony cameras? Zebras stop working when using slope level +3 or less. I own a Sony a7iii. Thanks in advance
Part of the problem with reviewing tech is people constantly getting angry in the comments. I'm going to say in the beginning of all my videos, look I'm not Gerald undone. Fantastic channel and video. You are a mench
You are the man! I went to the garage to find where I did throw my ninja v because it was really so bad with log files, you explained it better than the Atomos's CEO on his video, I was getting a 709 file out of the Ninja and I didn't understand why.... Yes because we have been told to toggle that freaki*** HDR/Log button and select camera brand and gamma bla bla bla but at the end no more log flexibility in post at all! Yes because we were getting a 709 signal instead, I can't believe that! Many thanks, greeting from France and you all stay safe by staying home
Gerald. I want to thank you for these vids and explaining in precise understandable language how to use this equipment. I have to learn how to shoot video for my day job and this has helped out in understanding why some one would need an atamos ninja 5. Especially since it can save us boatloads on memory costs. This with the battery kit and two 1tb ssd's is cheaper than buying memory cards totaling 2 TB. With that knowledge and the knowledge you've presented here i can convince my boss to buy one of these puppies lol. Thanks again sir.
I have a question about the “2 frame delay” of audio when using a Sony Camera. I read the manual and I think you might be mistaken about this setting. The manual seems to imply that this frame delay only applies to audio being recorded via the Ninja Mic Input, rather than any audio being transmitted via HDMI. However I am new to this, so very plausible that I am wrong.
Hey brother! You did save my new Ninja V a return to B&H Photo. I don't care much about anything but record a while longer and improve the audio by not routing the mics through the camera, which in itself is a vast improvement and worth the Ninja V price. Thank you, I will follow you now, indeed!👍👍
Thanks for this helpful guide Gerald. Now that the Atomos Ninja V and V+ have firmware updates to have the unit automatically calibrate the right audio frame delay, would you recommend using this feature still for Sony cameras? My Atomos Ninja V+ is calculating a 9 frame audio delay. Should I stick with this 9 frame delay or the 2 frame delay you recommended for Sony cameras? Thanks!
Thanks, Andres! This is the closest thing I have to that: ruclips.net/video/ptJuI1XovaU/видео.html Not exactly what you're looking for, but might help. Cheers!
I wish you covered more on HDR... I just want it to record what I -was- getting on SD. I'm trying to move my workflow from SD to Atomos, but no matter what I do, the clips are 4K Rec709 when recorded on disk by the Atomos. I'm at a loss as to what's wrong. On the Atomos, it says UHD24 HLG for input, NO output, Monitor is Leeming LUT, and REC is ProRes 422. But the file, when loaded into FCPX, is Rec709 every time. Sony is set to record only to HDMI, 24p, 4K. PP10 with HLG and Rec2020 (which work fine and load as Rec 2020 when imported from SD). On the Record table, it's Pre-Roll Off, Pro Res codec, 422 , UDH23.98, and no pulldown. On the LUTs tab, Slot 1 is the Leeming LUT, but During Record and During Output are both off. Thoughts?
FCPX automatically converts 2020 to 709 for you..could that be your issue? Also, make sure your project isn't set to a standard 709 color space before importing footage. m.ruclips.net/video/kdHpgmBqZg4/видео.html

I've recently bought a Ninja V+ and it works with my Sony A-Mount A99II. Recorded a friend's 3hr gig (4 Rock bands) and the record quality is perfect, had no worries about the outdated 30min recording time of the camera. So far I'm loving it
You have no idea how hard it has been to find a video with this exact information. All of the Ninja V videos I’ve watched just walk through the menus, but provide no help in regards to setting it up properly for first-time users. Thanks, Gerald. You are sent from the heavens. I’ve got more of an audio related question. I can never seem to get any audio from the mic input, even with Analog enabled, just like you mentioned in this video. I’ve tried this with both my Deity D3 and my RØDE VideoMicro. I can’t tell if I’m missing something. I’m wondering now if my input jack is borked out of the box.
Hey! Unfortunately the Ninja V doesn't provide any power over the mic jack like cameras do, so devices that require that 3 volt signal to turn on won't work. I have the same problem with my D3.
Gerald Undone That makes a lot of sense. I guess I was under the impression that with the D3 having its own battery that it wouldn’t require phantom power. This is very helpful. Thanks, Gerald!
Does Gerald have a video on how to make a RUclips video? I would love to know perhaps what his workflow would be, planning shots, writing, testing, excel sheets, etc.
Set it up the way you show in this vid. Shooting with Nikon Z7. When trying to record, I get message "Cannot record with N-Log turned ON". I have to turn N-Log in camera to OFF. So my question is: What is the purpose of N-Log if I have to disable ti when recording ? Am I still gonna get flat footage for post color processing ? Thank you, you post great tutorials !
Hi Gerald, thanks for putting this together. I am only using Ninja v as a monitor. When I connect it to Sony FS5, it looks beautiful. But when I pressor record on the camera, ninja goes black, no display. Is there something wrong with it or it's a setting? Thank you.
This might be a stupid question, but if you use the LUT on the monitor, does it show noise? Obviously the LUT overlay would be a great tip for shooting Log if it helps you expose enough to reduce the noise etc
How come no matter what I set the audio delay to the sound is still off/out of sync when I bring my footage into post? I’m plugging a rode videomic pro+ directly into my Sony a7iii.
Hi. Can I use the ninja v as a hdr monitor when we edit the hdr footage in FCPX? So do I need an extra setup apart from connect the hdmi cable and the MacBook? Thanks.
I have the same setup. Have the Atomos Ninja 5 and a Sony A6400. My videos don't look anything like the one Gerald has here. I'm not sure if I should turn Legalize On or Off as a beginner.
Hey Gerald, I have an interesting question that either I'm blatantly missing something or may have not been addressed due to the overall purpose of the ninja V, but can you monitor on the Ninja V without recording?
Thanks for the video breakdown. My ninja v is shipping to me and these were questions I already had from an audio perspective. The menus look a little intimidating but this video helped bring down the anxiety a bit.
The audio point at 10:00 regarding the delay is probably connected to the “live” vs. “lip sync” setting of the sony cameras as that changes the synchronization of the audio that comes out of the hdmi port
Hi Gerald, thank you for all your work! B&H has the Ninja V on sale right now (May 2023) and I have some video work coming up with my Nikon Z7 and Z7II. Is this still a helpful tool for me to have on a gig? I would probably just have one to record the #1 camera but I'm assuming it would extend my record time from the otherwise limit of 30 minutes. Thank you. Dennis
I dont know if this has been asked or not, but, how do you power atomos ninja v using d-tap connection to v-mount battery? Do you use a lp-e6 or sony np-f style dummy battery with d-tap connection? Thank you in advance, Gerald
Sorry for the noob question, I’m planning on buying either the Ninja V or a BMD Video Assist. How do you switch between frame rates? Is this something that is done directly on the Ninja or do you need to change the cameras output frequency/ HDMI frequency?
congratulations for your good work. I am having canon c100 mark 1 which is said to have 4K super 35 sensor. what resolution and FPS I can get using ninja V? Please guide
Quick tip! You don't have to deselect the yellow or blue tabs at the bottom to access the red menu, in fact if you're on the record screen and leave the yellow tab open, you can simply click the info on the top of the screen to shortcut you to those tabs within the red menu. for example, tapping the battery icon will bring you to the batter tab within the red menu, tapping the input and output signal displayed at the top will bring you to the input or output tabs respectively. The say "in," "out"," "mon (will bring you to the yellow monitor tab)," etc.... just a time saving tip =) P.S. I'm no expert, just giving out some free info like Gerald
Thank you!! I kept wondering why my Ninja V was drifting out of synch by two frames with my Sony A7RIV. You explain my problem and gave me the fix -THANK YOU!
Great video, appreciate the knowlegde. I am shooting the EOS R6 and was wondering in I can configure the Atomos to capture the video in ALL-I instead of the IPB options that the R6 only shows? I shoot surfing videos and primary use the footage for frame grabs, so I want the best quality frame grab where erratic motion is filmed. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the info. I'm considering buying the Canon r6 mark ii which needs to externally record 6k raw. The ninja V was recommend. Do you agree and is it a possible subject for a video?
I did find a difference when importing clips into Final Cut, depending what settings I dial on the Atomos. With matching setting to my Sony A6600, HLG3 and BT2020, the clips correctly show as BT 2020 in the Inspector. Otherwise they show as 1-1-1... and they do look different in the timeline depending what settings I choose in the Camera Output page in the Ninja.
Hi Gerald. I use the Sony FX6, which greys out the LOG/HDR toggle option on my Ninja V when I switch the camera on. And even if I have it manually set to Off, when I switch the camera on, it moves to On and greys out. So I guess that's OK as long as I choose Native in the Monitor options?
What about using the Atomos along with a sound recorder which uses hdmi to trigger the start/stop and timecode? How to rig the cables? To Atomos then to sound recorder? Will there be a delay? How about a video telling us a bit about this?
Any idea what the audio frame delay would be for the Canon R5? Didn't even know that was a thing until I saw this video. Happened to notice a delay from a recent shoot.
Hey, thank you for your video! How can I access the memory modes while recording only via the Atomos Ninja? I like to quickly switch between 2 presets on the Sony A73. Best
SUPER helpful. Thank you. In native my Ninja does not match the back of my Z6. Is this the Atomos Range Fix lut you mention? Is that how you calibrate, by creating a lut?
Watched the previous video again (and again). I'm still trying to calibrate my Ninja V to match what I'm seeing on the back of the camera if you have any advice. Thanks for what you do!
Any idea why we wouldn't get the option to select which audio tracks are recorded? Analog is greyed out. HDMI 1-2 is a lighter shade of grey. Nothing is red.
Thanks for doing this. Recently I was doing some live streaming and I was monkeying around with the Ninja, trying to take the audio from the audio mixer directly into the Ninja. Afterwards I was not getting my audio from the camera into the Ninja. This tutorial allowed me to reset the audio so it works again.
If you record audio separately to a Zoom H6, can you output the audio to the Ninja V audio input? That would save time. Or can you jam-sync timecode audio to Ninja V?
After seeing the price of the CFexpress Type A Memory Card for the Sony a7sIII(which I am hoping to pickup I instantly thought about an exterior recorder that will last a lot long than a card. I started looking around and narrowed down to the NINJA V but, I had no idea if that was going to work together with the Sony and how to operate it. My next move was to type " NINJA V Gerald Undone" in Google and there you were with more info that I could hoped fr anywhere on the net. Thanks Gerald, truly appreciate your time and efforts creating this video. Cheers Al Squamish, BC
So if I shoot S-Log 3, I should keep turned off that camera output feature? I am asking because I would mainly use ninja V for anamorphic desqueeze and preview of log footage with my LUT. I don't do recording, just a preview for correct exposure and sense of what it would look like since I would still color grade it in DaVinci.
Hi Gerald thank you for the video! My trigger button is not turning on, and the legalize only turns on when I turn on HDR auto next to it do you please know why? Thank you!
I have a question about the ninja, I’m using it mostly just as a monitor but if I turn the camera to portrait the view from the monitor turns upside down, how can I get the feed to display the correct way when I flip the camera into portrait mode?
Hi Mr. Undone 😊. Curious about dci message having to crop on my gh5 in h265 mode. My assumption was that dci was a different kind of connection as opposed to hdmi port, but it appears I am wrong. What is dci and why the crop to UHD. Thanks if you reply.
Thank you for this video Gerald, I have a audio question. Is it possible to use a boom mic and a lav mic at the same time with the Z6+atamos? I have a Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun and a Sennheiser EW 112P G4 Camera-Mount. Do you have any tips or recommended videos
the best thing i saw in ninja atoms V, thank you very much. I have a question because before stopping here, I heard different things. In the case that I want to record with my sony A7III and a6300 cameras in a CINE2 CINE4 profile, I can register it in the camera and in the atom if I put it in Standard mode. Thank you so much
Hmmm. OK.. I always shoot Log with J-HDR enabled (JVC LS-300 Log) to monitor in PQ and grade in FCPX manually with no issues. So shooting legal disables monitoring in PQ? I’ll have to update and experiment when I have some free time. Or since I seem to have no issues not to worry about it?
One of the things I'm using my Ninja V for is to pass through the video from my Fujifilm X-T3 to my computer to use as a webcam via a CamLink 4K. To do this, I'm using the HDMI OUT on the Ninja V and plugging that into the CamLink 4k. There is an audio delay of about 4 frames, which I've configured in the Ninja V, however the audio delay still exists. Do you know if the Audio Delay setting applys to the HDMI out of the Ninja V or only when it records? Thanks.
Thank you G for your another awesome tutorial! I have officially upgraded my Ninja V and your videos are my first hand tips source for my workflow improvement. Many thanks 😊
hey gerald, sorry if you mentioned it already but, what mount did you buy to attach the ninja v to that small rig cage? can you put that link in the description?

If it removes the "legalize" option, it must be illegal!

GREAT video, comprehensive, giving an overview on how to simplify things with the Ninja V. 👍🏻

Yeah, it's not quite phantom power. It's more like plug-in detection power used to tell smart devices there's a device connected.
Gerald Undone Oh, so if I’m understanding this correctly, it’s more of a handshake and not a power issue?
Hi Gerald, will you do another video covering the PR0-RES RAW Unlock for other users? Which I have done myself. :)
Enjoyed this immediate follow up video as well. 👊🏻😎
I’m plugging a rode videomic pro+ directly into my Sony a7iii.
you don't have to jump between the red and yellow settings page, just touch "monitor" on the top middle while being in the rec mode.
Would love to see a Sony Raw video with Atomos Shogun Inferno/7 and any of the compatible Sony SDI raw cams, FS700r/FS5/FS7/
Hey Gerald sorry to bother but will the Ninja De-squeeze my Sony A7iii signal when I shoot with the Sirui 50 anamorphoric ? Thanks for your help...
Thank you! Was just wondering about the Log/HDR switch and found your video! Saved me so much time researching. Thank Thank you!
Thanks again for making it so easy for us to understand the settings on the Ninja V.
Would you recommend recording audio with Ninja V or camera (Nikon D850) mic (Rode) input?
The audio point at 10:00 regarding the delay is probably connected to the “live” vs. “lip sync” setting of the sony cameras as that changes the synchronization of the audio that comes out of the hdmi port
Hey Gerald, I just set my Ninja V up with my R6, is there a way to display the AF tracking directly on the monitor rather than the camera's LCD?
Hi Gerald! @7:20 on meters, my rec is gray instead of red. It wont let me press it to turn it on. Any idea why? Thanks!
Hey Gerald, How do I get the atomos to stop baking in color into my video. I selected Native VLOG but it records in color.
Thank you. Dennis
I loved the last idea referring to the Playstation :) )) Brilliant.
What would be best, connect a rode external mic to a Sony a7iii or connect the mic to the Ninja V? Any benefits of one approach over the other?
Great job as always Jerald. Thanks for making this video for us amateurs.
Hi Gerald, Can you power the Ninja directly from a usb-c power bank?
You'd need an adapter to go to Sony L-series dummy battery.
@@geraldundone thx :)
congratulations for your good work. I am having canon c100 mark 1 which is said to have 4K super 35 sensor. what resolution and FPS I can get using ninja V? Please guide
Have you hear of how many audio delay frames you use for a Fuji X-T4 camera? thx.
The say "in," "out"," "mon (will bring you to the yellow monitor tab)," etc.... just a time saving tip =)
P.S. I'm no expert, just giving out some free info like Gerald
Thank you!! I kept wondering why my Ninja V was drifting out of synch by two frames with my Sony A7RIV. You explain my problem and gave me the fix -THANK YOU!
Gerald, if I don't need to record, would you suggest the shinobi instead of the Ninja? or other monitor. thanks
Did you were a T-shirt with a color matching your background or didi you pick a background to match the color of your shirt?
If I’m using atmos Ninja 5, can I record the sound straight to it instead of using zoom sound recorder? Please let me know.
Thank you
you can
Great video, appreciate the knowlegde.
I have the Amazon basics HDMI cable, a Sony a6500 but I don't have the option of 4K recording in the "Input" tab
Hi Gerald. Any way to set the time and date? Is the feature available in Atomos Ninja ?
Hi Gerald. I use the Sony FX6, which greys out the LOG/HDR toggle option on my Ninja V when I switch the camera on. And even if I have it manually set to Off, when I switch the camera on, it moves to On and greys out. So I guess that's OK as long as I choose Native in the Monitor options?
I am considering to purchase a ninja v. One questions, how do you transfer data from SSD to computer? Is this through a cable or certain way?
What about using the Atomos along with a sound recorder which uses hdmi to trigger the start/stop and timecode? How to rig the cables? To Atomos then to sound recorder? Will there be a delay? How about a video telling us a bit about this?
Thanks for the heads up about activating. Question, I do not see DNxHR I only have DNxHD on my Ninja V. any advice thanks
It should switch to HR automatically when given a 4K signal. HD is for HD.
@@geraldundone Thank you so much forgot to change the output setting on my GH5
Gerald could you please share the manual?
Any idea what the audio frame delay would be for the Canon R5? Didn't even know that was a thing until I saw this video. Happened to notice a delay from a recent shoot.
Can you save videos with LUTs applied so you dont have to apply in post? Or is it only for monitoring?
Cheers Al Squamish, BC
do you need to set audio delay in case you connect your mic directly to recorder?
So if I shoot S-Log 3, I should keep turned off that camera output feature?
I am asking because I would mainly use ninja V for anamorphic desqueeze and preview of log footage with my LUT.
I don't do recording, just a preview for correct exposure and sense of what it would look like since I would still color grade it in DaVinci.
Hi Gerald thank you for the video! My trigger button is not turning on, and the legalize only turns on when I turn on HDR auto next to it do you please know why? Thank you!
I have the Sony A7iii the hdmi out is lowered at 4k25fps how big difference is from 4k30fps? Should I consider camera upgrading?
Gerald, will you be looking into the ninja v+? Is it the logical partner to the a1 because of the 8k capability or does the sony not output 8k raw?
I have a question, do you use a teleprompter? and if so can you show us which one you use?
I have a problem with davinci, it doesn’t import pro res raw videos I shoot with the Ninja V. Do you know why?
