What I need is a GIF of Caleb's finger wagging at 1:02 for every time I plan to buy more gear that I won't be using lol. Awesome video dude, really bringing my two passions of tinkering and cameras together!
Just grabbed an S5 and I’m thinking I’m gonna follow this setup as closely as I can. Love how easily the camera can be pulled out when I wanna be quick and light for simpler days. Thank you for sharing this and everything else you share, man. Consistently providing insane value year after year.
This is (of course) the tightest DSLR/mirrorless rig I've seen on here. I would love to see a follow up video exploring a few options for how you would do audio with this setup - whether doing your primary recording in-camera or whether getting a scratch track to the camera from a separate, dedicated audio recording setup.
I just purchased and built this rig for my A7IV because of this video and THANK YOU! You saved me countless hours and dollars testing and trying different things. This rig is truly perfect. Thanks so much...
Amazing rig Caleb. Over the years you never drifted away from the main topic of your channel and that's great. Providing affordable solution to filmmakers and make their life easier. Thanks a ton !!
For those who don't have the money to buy the whole rig setup : remember the camera rig does not make good videos by magic, you are the one doing it ! But the ergonomy certainly help for sure :D
And you timing couldn’t be more impecable. I was just working through the parts for something similar and getting more confused by the minute. Thank you!
This is awesome. Bought the remaining pieces that I didn’t have to make this rig (made a few minor changes) and it’s perfect ergonomics and function. This rig makes handheld shooting a breeze and powers everything allowing me to focus more on the shots and not worry about carrying batteries for each piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing this!!
I wish i found this channel 4 years ago when i started film school, it’s an absolute goldmine of technical knowledge and tips that would have saved me a lot of headaches
For going on sets, it would be even better to incorporate a wireless video transmitter and have a place to route the sound mix’s signal into the camera with a wireless go for scratch track. Great video!
I'm really grateful for channels like yours. I just got into serious DSLR sport after tinkering with it for 10 years I decided to go get myself a GH6 (I do mostly video work) and honestly, the "professional" camera club are very snooty and unhelpful to people wanting to start off. Like they think photography is a secret club and only some elites can join. I have a very similar setup to you so I'm really pleased that I've got something a professional considered good. I built up my cage around smallrig's setup.
The GH5 rig isn’t even close to being considered an OG on this channel. I’ve been here since the Tamron 17-50 review and I wouldn’t even consider myself an OG after 7 years.
Caleb, your production value is dead-on, sir. Color balances/composition/lighting design/progressive editing style are all from heaven. Oh, and thanks for caring about audio quality, as well. You-da-man. :)
This is the best small system i have seen. I have a mini gimbal 📷 built out on a rig made for a Nikon added few parts and I have never seen anything like what I have made yet.
But but but....matte box!? How can a filmmaker look like a real pro without a matte box? LOL. Seriously though, this is one of the most compact and efficient rigs I've ever seen...thanks Caleb!
Can always go with the polar pro basecamp if needs be, I love mine with the VND plates, but I can see it being overkill for compact rigs like this when a screw on variND'll do the trick too
I heard angels singing when I opened this. I am with you - been tinkering for years to find the best compact rig setup. The rear monitor flipped out on the side of the v-mount is just so slick. Excellent job!
I know you made this one back in 2021 but Tilta have a great baseplate (Tiltaing 15mm LWS Baseplate Type VI) which has a native arca mount and rosette built in, letting you cut out a lot of the different parts in this one whilst also running a cage that is native arca too. Allowing you to break out of the rig to the likes of an RS2 arca mount with minimum extra parts or flex :)
What's great about those who have paved the way at tinkering, is that we can benefit from it. I don't have the most up-to-date camera, but your system is very capable of working for all kinds of cameras, whether we use all of your suggestions or some of them in my case. The best part is that a rig like this can be used for our future cameras as well! Thanks a bunch!
I built this rig to a T. Absolutely loved the process and tinkering and loved the rig itself even more. I expanded it with a LED light and HDMI transmitter. It felt amazing in my hand and tried it for the first time a week ago to find out this is NOT for me haha. So I rebuilt this rig and all it's features to a gimbal and have now the perfect gimbal rig thanks to this video. Just goes to show everybody and every setting needs a different solution. Thanks a lot for this video. Learned a LOT
I would've added a hand strap on the right side. I currently have one on my rig, allows me to drop my arm with the hand strap wrapped around the back of my hand 👍 Excellent rig tho ❤️
Thank you! This set up is perfect for what I do and much cheaper than I expected. Update: Built the whole kit minus the follow focus and EVF. Added the small rig mini matte box and this rig is looking so 🔥! I had been reading through tripod reviews on B&H and was set on the GH-06 so I was really happy to see that this rig works with that tripod head.
Good job! Especially showing the total cost, and options to make it more affordable. This rig is beyond what I need/want for my video experience, but you’ve shown how it can be scalable depending on a person’s particular specs. Thanks.
I remember the day this video was uploaded and I have been so impressed by the setup for my needs that I have been religiously returning back to it, researching the gear and core rig, to now having built the majority of it. I'll be getting the follow-focus system next and Tilta Mirage mattebox system next to finalize it. Thanks for kickstarting my filmmaking journey the best possible way Caleb, much appreciated! :)
Rig looks great, thx for the video! Three things... 1. I assume you only take off those plastic latches from the A7SIII ports in sunny weather. 2. Where do you integrate a shotgun microfone in this setup? Three. With the V-Mount battery flush against the A7SIII, does it not obstruct some of the buttons of the camera?
I'm so glad I watched the other long video about how what the different elements are because otherwise this video would have been gibberish. But awesome video, very thorough yet concise at the same time
Hey, thank you so much for this video! Building something similar. I was wondering if you could provide more insight on the dummy battery you made for the Tilta handle. What cable + what step-down converter did you use? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Would also like more insite into this. As well as knowing what you did to use the Nitzi plate and dummy battery to not fry you camera as some other comments have sadly had happen to them. Please Caleb!
Amazing rig, definitely grabbed some inspo for my own. Im wondering how you would go about turning this into a shoulder rig? Thanks for the great content!
Pro tip: The SmallRig manual follow focus comes with a 15mm nato rail (like the one at 8:39 but with a protective nub). I have it mounted directly on top of the cage (replacing the one in 5:39) and slide the handle onto it. One less rail! It's not a *huge* change, but new nato rails can be like 10 bucks a pop, which can go a long way :) Also, make sure to budget for a charger for your v-mount battery! The battery I bought (the Moman 95 mini v-mount) did not come with a charger and the particular one I have does not have a USB-C port to charge. And, as far as I can tell, the usb-c port on the vmount plate is not bi-directional and you cannot charge the battery through it.
This is the rig I have been looking for. I'm doing up a Sony FX3 rig & being compact is why I bought this over the FX6. I'll add the SmallRig Compact V-Mount Battery Mounting System 4064 for V-mount bats.
I built this rig and love it! Thanks for doing the breakdown. How did you edit the transitions between the possible rig layouts? That looked super cool
Hey Jacob. Did you figure out how to do those cool transitions? I checked all comments in this video but I think you are the only one that noticed it :) I am trying to use it for a project. Thanks in advance!
@@epaitor unfortunately not. Im pretty sure it’s a tripod shot of the rig setup in the same spot taking a shot of each variation with an adjustment layer doing the zoom in over all the shots. I don’t know he did the morph kind of cross between each variation though.

Love it. So helpful seeing all the different pieces you use to make up your rig. I've already got a few of those items, so I might be able to put together a rig similar to yours at a small additional cost!
I think one of the changed I would make would be to accommodate for the Sony XLR-K3M. It'll throw off the balance/weight, but the versatility of the K3M really helps audio wise.
Hey Caleb thanks for this awesome informative video! I have a question for you: Would you mind releasing a video of some test footage done with this rig? Of course every operator is different and handheld shooting is very much a skill, but maybe you could do a video of like various styles of shooting with different focal lengths, so we could get a grip of how effective this rig is in reducing shake? Maybe show us how YOU use it and why you think it works so good? I just really feel like this could help me make a decision about opting for something like this, since this is still a fairly large investment to make for a rig. Any response would be very much appreciated! Cheers

I’m new to all of this and I watched this video to help me rig up my bmpcc 6k pro with the “core rig” essentials you started with. Your videos are extremely helpful to my journey. Thank you so much.
Hey Caleb, great video. Love this rig, im definetily going to build something like this! BTW how did you got around the voltage of the camera with the dummy batterya since the DC out of the nitze plate is14.8V?
@@daveyman The "KONDOR BLUE 1.35/3.5 DC Male to A7SIII Dummy Battery NP-FZ100 Cable Compatible with Sony" he recommended in the video fried your camera? Or did you actually use a different dummy battery. I'm surprised by this since that dummy battery is regulated to 8v output so it shouldn't get the full 14.8v from the Nitze battery plate he recommends. Can you clarify?? I'm thinking of making this purchase for an A7Siii, though and not sure if the input requirement of your camera may be lower?
@@iamteedoh i just got this same exact rig almost, I’m just using the USB on battery with Sony battery in body to extend battery life. Im a little to confused on the different voltages to risk a dummy battery
Oh my god! its really perfect ! Hopefully you can update another one this year with the same idea with V mount plate than can power everything and cheaper. Amazing everytime
I watch this video may be 20 times to build mine for the fuji X-T4, not the cheapest one but really the perfect One ! Thanks for sharing your experience of building rig ! Those are amazing components that fit so well together for a compact and efficient setup ! Living in Belgium, some component are not easy to find like the Kessler Kwik Stand but even if it is expensif, it is worth ordering it from the US. i changed the shinobi by a Ninja V and the Sony Cam with an X-T4 but for the rest the same setup .... Thanks Guy !!!!
Agreed! I'd like to see Sony's XLR audio adapter attached for a quality shotgun mic and at least a solution for ND's be it screw on variables or a matte box with slide in filters. Will definitely decrease the portability/compactness but would step up the performance level!
I am super impressed, Caleb. Superb job. I put together a simple rig for my A6300 some time ago and it's constantly morphing into another slightly different configuration. I cannot imagine what you must have gone thru to come up with this design. All that time going thru components from SmallRig and God knows all the other companies that make this and that piece of hardware. Good on ya, as they say.
I've been using Kessler Kwik stands for years! I'm really happy to see a bigger RUclipsr giving them some love! I use the regular one like yours on my a7rII, and have the k-plate with built in 15mm rod support for my Pocket4k.
Hey Jim. How do you find that K-Plate? I'm doubting which one of the two to get as it seems with the K-Plate I can eliminate buying the base plate in the setup in this video. Although It's still more expensive, and it looks quite bulky. Would love to hear your experience with it.
@@dnnyktzn7247 I really like it, but I'm also not one to re-configure my camera all the time. Because the battery life is so pitiful on the Pocket4k, I pretty much never shoot without a v-mount battery on the rails on the back. I also like the extra weight it adds to the 4k since it doesn't have IBIS; the weight smooths out micro jitters. If I was shooting with the A7sIII or FX3, I probably would want to be able to easily remove the cam from the rails and extra aks, so I'd probably do something where I could have my Kessler kwik release on top of the 15mm rods, and a normal kwik stand on the camera.
Thank you for this video, Caleb. I've decided to up my game for historic video production in 2022, and one thing is with my equipment. I've watched this video over and over on how to trick-out my Canon M50. I'm really looking forward to the results! Your channel rocks!
I will never need anything like this. But your videos are so intoxicating and amazing, I watched the entire video just because I love watching stuff like this. My core computer desk set up is from a video I watched of yours a couple of years ago using monitor arms.
Awesome! Like the rig. Modified by adding full cage, Added wood handle with hot shoe on the right. Placed Zoom H6 on main camera hot shoe with adapter. Added Sennheiser MKE 600 to hot shoe on full cage. Added Atomos Ninja V on wooden handle hot shoe. I couldn't go as compact as your unit but I have my audio which I can use on camera or take off and have a boom mic in a few minutes.
I really like that you weren't afraid to go with a half-cage! I've definitely picked up a couple cool tricks here, like the mini v-mount and the Kestler quick stand!
A lot of times "the perfect" is quite an overstatement... But you basically hit the nail on the head with this one. The details like the mini V lock system really make it something incredible!
so far this is the best rig i have ever seen for this type of cameras, amazing amazing amazing, a have a few stuff already but im copying a few from this set up, once i finished ill share a few photos
Dude...the most badass rig video EVER MADE. Thank you so much for the time and investment in doing this. Such an awesome looking rig and well thoughout! Going to buy the parts soon!
Terribly satisfying to watch. Reminds me of the joys of lego. Thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for the other in depth video where you break down all the different parts of camera rigs. Super helpful. May you enjoy many more years capturing light and sound.
This is perfect! I want to build this rig. I’ll probably end up doing it for my next camera I buy. Which will be the canon eos R. I currently have a canon rebel t6i. But this build has everything I want.
Wow!......guess what I'm going to do! I'm listing all the parts with the wooden handle for my a7siii ! However, I don't like the flipscreen hanging off the side so, I will use the portkeys monitor (PortKeys BM5 II) that can control the settings!!!!! Killer setup! POW!👊🏾😡 love this setup!
I have built my first rig not long ago, I have a shoulder rig but i just simply pull off the shoulder pad and rails when i need too. I have a big battery from anker wich fit nice to my xt3, the inconvenient is that it's more heavy on one side.
Thank you Caleb! I just bought the Shinobi and the battery, I used the links to help the channel! I love your videos they are must for filmmakers or camera/gear enthusiasts!
Really wish this came out a few weeks ago before I bought a BMPCC 6k Pro. After watching, I went back to my BMPCC 6k rig and was able to greatly condense it without having to buy any new parts.
It totally makes sense if your are a regular video shooter.... every bit of it. I would probably replace the monitor with the Ninja or Ninja V. Most lilely the latter because of all the things the V brings to the table toward production flexibility. Nice rig!
Awesome little setup! I'm anxiously awaiting B&H to get the FX6 back in stock for my indoor/corporate work, so this is a perfect setup to give me long lasting power and a little more "wow" factor for my clients. Thanks & keep up the great work! Been following for YEARS and never get tired of your content.
Just built a very similar rig only using SmallRig’s NPF plate and battery. Saved a bit of $$ and can always swap over to the mini v-mount down the road. Thanks for the great video.
I just looked around me and seen that I already have about 65-70% of the parts needed and a lot of the big-ticket items. I'm definitely about to buy the rest of the parts and build this out!
so good, i am going to apply this to my fuji xt3 system. i would get a full cage for mine. so i can add a second handle. i will be adding an articulating mount for the battery so i can flip the battery down allowing me to see and use my touch screen.

@@iamteedoh I’m just looking at the same thing and I’m really confused. Can you please tell me what cable you recommend please?
Bro this is so much information, but I find it very useful. You are a boss. Thank you for sharing.
I just realised that over the years, DSLRs have barely showed up in this channel anymore
Yeah it has been a while!
The mini battery plate is gold!
Update for 2024?
It’s the same
Update update
He did say perfect 😅
I mean it’s just as solid now as it is then… the base of the rig is standard, Ud probably just swap out to ur preferred cage and follow focus and such
The 2024 version is called iPhone 16 😂
Oh my god! its really perfect ! Hopefully you can update another one this year with the same idea with V mount plate than can power everything and cheaper. Amazing everytime
Caleb making the rest of us feel rig-inferiority
I watch this video may be 20 times to build mine for the fuji X-T4, not the cheapest one but really the perfect One ! Thanks for sharing your experience of building rig ! Those are amazing components that fit so well together for a compact and efficient setup ! Living in Belgium, some component are not easy to find like the Kessler Kwik Stand but even if it is expensif, it is worth ordering it from the US. i changed the shinobi by a Ninja V and the Sony Cam with an X-T4 but for the rest the same setup .... Thanks Guy !!!!
Am I really the only person to point out that this "perfect rig" doesn't include ND filters/built-in ND's? Not to mention microphone?
Agreed! I'd like to see Sony's XLR audio adapter attached for a quality shotgun mic and at least a solution for ND's be it screw on variables or a matte box with slide in filters. Will definitely decrease the portability/compactness but would step up the performance level!
This is an AD, you just made them lose sales.
You are not. Were's the mic mount?
@@overland-workshop Should be pretty to attach anywhere it looks like
I am super impressed, Caleb.
By the time you buy all the bits to make this, your better off buying an fx6 or 9
I've been using Kessler Kwik stands for years!
Thanks for this mate, just sorted a new rig for my workplace. Love this build, worry free from a battery management front.
Your volume and editing were impeccable. I’m going to copy your setup so hard.
Thank you for this video, Caleb. I've decided to up my game for historic video production in 2022, and one thing is with my equipment. I've watched this video over and over on how to trick-out my Canon M50. I'm really looking forward to the results! Your channel rocks!
I need to emulate this on the cheap to start but what I really like starting is that quick release plate and that bottom plate
You are a beacon of light for humanity
I will never need anything like this. But your videos are so intoxicating and amazing, I watched the entire video just because I love watching stuff like this. My core computer desk set up is from a video I watched of yours a couple of years ago using monitor arms.
This is the best rig I’ve ever seen. I’ve been watching this all day. My Amazon cart is full of small rig parts now 😆
Aw thanks Zach!
Do you have any images of your rig anywhere?
I really like that you weren't afraid to go with a half-cage! I've definitely picked up a couple cool tricks here, like the mini v-mount and the Kestler quick stand!
A lot of times "the perfect" is quite an overstatement... But you basically hit the nail on the head with this one. The details like the mini V lock system really make it something incredible!
so far this is the best rig i have ever seen for this type of cameras, amazing amazing amazing, a have a few stuff already but im copying a few from this set up, once i finished ill share a few photos
Wow. This is insanely efficient, compact and well thought out!
Thanks man!
I have a big battery from anker wich fit nice to my xt3, the inconvenient is that it's more heavy on one side.
i fall in love when people start making instant the point
you're the best in the biz at these videos
What effect are you using to transition between each shot so the parts look like they are "morphing" on the rig? So cool!
FX3 Rig would be a good one to perfect. With an addition to shoot vertically as many platforms are demanding this style of content.
Fantastic work . Very impressed the way you have explained and loved the transitions. You are amazing editor too
Best camera rigging video I've ever seen.
Been following your builds for years and you just keep dialing them in. Thanks!
watched you for years, excellent content and always gets me thinking
Just built a very similar rig only using SmallRig’s NPF plate and battery. Saved a bit of $$ and can always swap over to the mini v-mount down the road. Thanks for the great video.
I must say this is the best rig I've seen so far. I have a similar set up. Tilta half cage is very neat.
Nobody ever thought playing with LEGO as a kid was a bad idea.
I just looked around me and seen that I already have about 65-70% of the parts needed and a lot of the big-ticket items. I'm definitely about to buy the rest of the parts and build this out!
Oh nice!!!
Pretty cool. I always go back to a bare camera for my uses. Not perfect but I really like the low weight and zero cables.
so good, i am going to apply this to my fuji xt3 system. i would get a full cage for mine. so i can add a second handle. i will be adding an articulating mount for the battery so i can flip the battery down allowing me to see and use my touch screen.
You’re my hero!!!
I’ve been wanting to build a rig but there are so many confusing bits and ends w/ mystifying names like NATO, Arri and rosettes but this gets me a good start. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
