What I need is a GIF of Caleb's finger wagging at 1:02 for every time I plan to buy more gear that I won't be using lol. Awesome video dude, really bringing my two passions of tinkering and cameras together!
For those who don't have the money to buy the whole rig setup : remember the camera rig does not make good videos by magic, you are the one doing it ! But the ergonomy certainly help for sure :D
Amazing rig Caleb. Over the years you never drifted away from the main topic of your channel and that's great. Providing affordable solution to filmmakers and make their life easier. Thanks a ton !!
For going on sets, it would be even better to incorporate a wireless video transmitter and have a place to route the sound mix’s signal into the camera with a wireless go for scratch track. Great video!
This is awesome. Bought the remaining pieces that I didn’t have to make this rig (made a few minor changes) and it’s perfect ergonomics and function. This rig makes handheld shooting a breeze and powers everything allowing me to focus more on the shots and not worry about carrying batteries for each piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing this!!
Thank you! This set up is perfect for what I do and much cheaper than I expected. Update: Built the whole kit minus the follow focus and EVF. Added the small rig mini matte box and this rig is looking so 🔥! I had been reading through tripod reviews on B&H and was set on the GH-06 so I was really happy to see that this rig works with that tripod head.
I know you made this one back in 2021 but Tilta have a great baseplate (Tiltaing 15mm LWS Baseplate Type VI) which has a native arca mount and rosette built in, letting you cut out a lot of the different parts in this one whilst also running a cage that is native arca too. Allowing you to break out of the rig to the likes of an RS2 arca mount with minimum extra parts or flex :)
I really like that you weren't afraid to go with a half-cage! I've definitely picked up a couple cool tricks here, like the mini v-mount and the Kestler quick stand!
I think one of the changed I would make would be to accommodate for the Sony XLR-K3M. It'll throw off the balance/weight, but the versatility of the K3M really helps audio wise.
Amazing rig, definitely grabbed some inspo for my own. Im wondering how you would go about turning this into a shoulder rig? Thanks for the great content!
I built this rig and love it! Thanks for doing the breakdown. How did you edit the transitions between the possible rig layouts? That looked super cool
Hey Jacob. Did you figure out how to do those cool transitions? I checked all comments in this video but I think you are the only one that noticed it :) I am trying to use it for a project. Thanks in advance!
@@epaitor unfortunately not. Im pretty sure it’s a tripod shot of the rig setup in the same spot taking a shot of each variation with an adjustment layer doing the zoom in over all the shots. I don’t know he did the morph kind of cross between each variation though.
Really wish this came out a few weeks ago before I bought a BMPCC 6k Pro. After watching, I went back to my BMPCC 6k rig and was able to greatly condense it without having to buy any new parts.
Hey Caleb thanks for this awesome informative video! I have a question for you: Would you mind releasing a video of some test footage done with this rig? Of course every operator is different and handheld shooting is very much a skill, but maybe you could do a video of like various styles of shooting with different focal lengths, so we could get a grip of how effective this rig is in reducing shake? Maybe show us how YOU use it and why you think it works so good? I just really feel like this could help me make a decision about opting for something like this, since this is still a fairly large investment to make for a rig. Any response would be very much appreciated! Cheers
I watch this video may be 20 times to build mine for the fuji X-T4, not the cheapest one but really the perfect One ! Thanks for sharing your experience of building rig ! Those are amazing components that fit so well together for a compact and efficient setup ! Living in Belgium, some component are not easy to find like the Kessler Kwik Stand but even if it is expensif, it is worth ordering it from the US. i changed the shinobi by a Ninja V and the Sony Cam with an X-T4 but for the rest the same setup .... Thanks Guy !!!!
Rig looks great, thx for the video! Three things... 1. I assume you only take off those plastic latches from the A7SIII ports in sunny weather. 2. Where do you integrate a shotgun microfone in this setup? Three. With the V-Mount battery flush against the A7SIII, does it not obstruct some of the buttons of the camera?
This is perfect! I want to build this rig. I’ll probably end up doing it for my next camera I buy. Which will be the canon eos R. I currently have a canon rebel t6i. But this build has everything I want.
Just built a very similar rig only using SmallRig’s NPF plate and battery. Saved a bit of $$ and can always swap over to the mini v-mount down the road. Thanks for the great video.
so far this is the best rig i have ever seen for this type of cameras, amazing amazing amazing, a have a few stuff already but im copying a few from this set up, once i finished ill share a few photos
Terribly satisfying to watch. Reminds me of the joys of lego. Thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for the other in depth video where you break down all the different parts of camera rigs. Super helpful. May you enjoy many more years capturing light and sound.
Thank you Caleb! I just bought the Shinobi and the battery, I used the links to help the channel! I love your videos they are must for filmmakers or camera/gear enthusiasts!
Dang Caleb! I just finished building and tweaking your NP-F battery rig for my X-T3s, and now you come out with this!! At least I know what to work towards as I eventually acquire more bits and bobs. Thanks for doing the trial and error for us!
I just looked around me and seen that I already have about 65-70% of the parts needed and a lot of the big-ticket items. I'm definitely about to buy the rest of the parts and build this out!
Heads up to anyone looking into this, those Tilta grips seem great at first but I quickly realized mine had too small of a wheel range to be able to make precise focus adjustments. I think it's better to just mount the standard wireless Nucleus wheel to a handle with 1/4" mount points.
Love your video. I get super picky about balancing everything perfect along the y-axis of the lens so that handle carrying with one hand is super easy.
@DSLR Video Shooter This was pretty cool and a very nice rig, but unless I missed something I think you need to go into more detail on how you built the voltage step down Dummy Batt as I saw someone mentioned on Amazon they fried their Sony Cam because they supplied 14 and not 7 or so volts. So I think its important to go into how this works and how to make it. as this can happen to more then just that one person who may not know that thy need to get or build a step down voltage converter dummy battery. That seemed only briefly touched on.
I just received everything in this video for the base setup and I gotta say, well done man! This is amazing!! But damn the Smallrig Quick Release Plate is only on B&H and obviously back ordered thanks to this fantastic video 😂
I've created small rigs in the past, specifically for my A6300. Just purchased the FX3 and I am definitely looking to create a rig for this. I truly admire all the effort that must have gone into trying out, rejecting, rethinking, etc. that went into this one. Thanks for doing this.
These mountings are amazing! Great research and testing. 1) These mounts you advise for external filmings of what kind? 2) With so many fittings and bolting, how much time in advance does it take to be ready to go on set? (Sorry about the Google Translate's english 😑)
Good stuff. We pretty much came to the same conclusion on our rigs - you’ve been able to get yours a little more compact which is one of the configurations I have as well. Nato rails are the best way to go for sure- I am going to look into that battery plate by Nitze Well done as always
Great rig, man. Hits so many of the points I am aiming for with my rig -- with many of the same goals -- especially fitting it in a bag without disassembling. Thanks for the video!
Wow, there are more parts here than your desk setups. Or my kid's lego kits :). But you saved people a bunch of time on researching all the parts, so thank you.
I have a couple of questions. What sort of material are you shooting and how tall are you? If you're just shooting sit-down interviews or you're 6'4 tall, then shooting at rib height instead of eye height won't be a problem. If you're shooting verite or, like me, you're 5'8 then it might well be. I shoot verite docs for UK TV broadcast and I'd be fired instantly if I didn't shoot everything at eye level. It makes a big difference if you're constantly shooting up your subjects' noses. I like your small rig, it's very nicely done. I'm with you on the importance of nimble and unobtrusive. I'm limited in my work by having to use larger cameras such as the c300iii or FX9 but would much prefer to use a rig like yours, ideally with the c70. In verite shooting, you have a different, more intimate relationship with your subject when you're holding the camera in front of you rather than when you have it on your shoulder. But never, in my opinion, at the cost of not having the lens at or near eye level.
Those arrangements are very impractical unless you don't make anything but moving the camera from panning and tilt, the focus ring it's not soft enough to replace a steady cam ( camcorder )with electronic zoom and supported on shoulder...
It's a good little rig but it does lack expandability. Essentially the cage needs to be larger and provide more screw points to attach any other accessories like a wireless transmitter.
I'm so jealous of that set-up. My work would never pay for even ONE of those set-ups. For my 2 camera interviews, I'm working with a GH4 and T5i... trying to match quality and color is ridiculous! So jealous! Great video tho. I'm gonna save it away on one of my playlists, in the event that my work ever decides to actually pony up some funds to properly fund their videos.
