NEW Toyota GR Yaris "GR-Four" Review - What Does A Celica GT-Four Owner Think?
HTML-код

- I love homolagation specials, particularly when it is a rally car. However, with waning interest in the series, the high cost of production and the tiny profit margins, most manufacturers don't really bother with them anymore.
However, Toyota boss Akio Toyoda decided that he wanted to make something fast, fun and affordable as Toyota's entry into the 2021 rally championship. So the GR Yaris was born. Dubbed the "GR-Four" this is a spiritual successor to the old Celica GT-Four, a dominant force in its day.
But, at £30,000 - just how good is it?

I went to view this at a dealership when the first prototype models arrived in the UK. While I was there another person arrived in his Porsche and walked in. The salesman told me that he had just bought 6 of these Yaris GRs for him and his friends to go racing. Lucky friends
Well that's a new fantasy I'm going to dwell on...
I know money supposedly can’t buy happiness but it can buy 6 GR Yarises
Finally a worthy Starlet GT replacement
No where near as fun though. This thing weighs 350kg more and is no where near as analog
@@TonyEG6 What a car they were, loved mine hope this one is half as much fun.
As a Starlet GT owner of over 10 years, this is the first new car I've truly been excited about..
And am seriously considering
This has it's own 3 pot rather than the others found in Toyota's, I get the feeling it will be highly tunable. That is a huge airbox ...
I love the fact the handbrake disengages the rear wheels, the battery in the boot. Get rid of those seats and fit lightweight ones and ditch the aircon.. easy changes, probably light enough to not need too much work on the brakes, don't need to bother with the suspension. This is ripe for being an easy to do track day car.
*Never thought the day would come that I would call the Yaris a sick car. I need one.*
Here in Australia they sold 1000 of them within a week for a discounted price of $39,990 AUD (22,071 pounds). Now they are selling another 100 at $45,000 but only half have been sold. I love it, but when it eventually retails here for $49,990 well I don't love it that much
I ordered a red one on the 1st day of pre order in the evening and I was like the 550th person to order. I heard from the dealership its at about 1,800 now, they kept it at $44,950AUD after the 100. Don't know when it will be $50+K. My car is delayed and expected to arrive late Jan next year, some need to wait till march. This is what I heard.
Looking at the Au online preorder there is no 'pack' options that I could find. Choose a colour and that's it?
@@Flaming-Hedgehog The Rallye edition is releasing later in Aud which will have 2x trick diffs, better suspension/tyres and trim
@@peejayem4700 So then the cheaper first release 1000 units are bare bones and that's why they're cheaper?
@@Flaming-Hedgehog Whilst the first release is still kitted very well and I'm sure would be a great car the diffs alone will make the Rallye spec the better drivers choice. Then's there's the other bits that will be included which makes it cream on top
1280kg was weight limit for years for rally cars and touring cars. I find it really cool that this car shares weight, gearbox type and engine layout with most legendary rally cars of all time.
I can live with a mediocre interior if it delivers on performance. Consider how Subaru has been putting low-rent interiors in the WRX forever.
Yes these cars aren't really huge sellers like the corolla or rav4 so I think its a win win for all
The problem is that you can also get a WRX starting at 30k.
@@adamcako5281 not in the UK. The WRX and STI don't exist any more
@@adamcako5281 do you mean second hand?
@@adamcako5281 how is that a problem? This car is more like the STi with its locking diffs and comes with a carbon fiber roof
This is my affordable dream car. The looks is killer and it's small enough for city driving whilst offering sports car performance
@terminal one No one has driven the new gr yaris except for the press. I'd love to know how you can stack them side by side and compare.
its actually not that small. Its very wide which makes it a pain in traffic
The exhaust sounds exactly like when i'm going down some rough sidewalk on my skateboard...
I guess we won't truly know until we start slapping some exhausts on them
thats a very....on point description lol
Very precise description ngl
It doesn’t actually sound like that, it’s the mic.
Nice, cool skateboard.
I was literally looking at test driving the new GR Yaris for potentially my next car and was surprised to see no one had done a comprehensive review! Glad one of my favourite channels on YT has finally done it!
There was an Embargo on reviews until this morning. The Late Brake Show just did one as well.
Lol this would spank a veloster n. Both have cheap interior. Hyundai really screwed the pooch by not making an awd hot hatch by now.
Did you manage to get a test drive
@@TrollThings247 Not yet, currently waiting on my local Toyota dealership to get back to me with available dates. After this review I am certainly looking forward to it
@@supercooled the veloster n's interior is actually a lot cheaper feeling than the GR Yaris.
Future classic. Love everything about it even down to the stormtrooper colour scheme.
Isn't only sold in the JDM.
This isn't JDM
Good point how's this.
i’m not so sure, the value will double this time next year mate.
You’re the first person I’ve seen drive one of these. Congratulations. I would love one.
this is the fiesta rs that ford never made
yet.
@@spa3093 ford said they would not make another focus rs, so i doubt they will make a fiesta rs
@@iTxip They're priming to bring back the Escort RS nameplate.
They need to build a 2 door Fiesta RS for the US. I would by one for sure. Sports cars should only come 2 door. I don't want anyone in my car complaining I'm going to fast or messing up my interior.
@@koolone3791 Ain't gonna happen. We're not even getting the GR Yaris. Small cars don't sell in the US and most companies don't want to lose money on making such a vehicle
one of few car reviewers out there that is credible. proper genuine review of the car with pros and real powerful but fair cons. a review which serves the interest of people watching and not the car industry or the horrid PR companies lurking in the background that all those other fake reviewers work for. thank you
My absolute pleasure
A homologation special in 2020? Maybe one good thing happened this year after all.
Toyota deserve real credit for a car like this.
Quality review James.
Oh my god you're one of the first to have one love it
Great video buddy, sounds like a very interesting little car!
Hey joe, are you getting a go yourself?
Great review James, I've been dropping everything to watch every new Yaris GR4 video for the past few weeks! I haven't wanted anything so much since before I bought the first of my GT-Fours. I'm now looking at the possibility of selling one next year to make space in the garage for one of these!
Not going to lie, this is one of your best reviews. Love the technical details and format. The smile on your face as you drive says it all!
No other motoring content producer does what you do dear. Every video is a treat. You're so likeable J. The anti-clarkson remedy we all want
Thanks Stuart, too kind
I watched this review, then went to my very local Toyota dealer to put my name in the waiting list. Ended up buying the one in the showroom there and then, 0% finance too.
4 weeks on: THE CAR IS FANTASTIC! Don’t hesitate if you’re thinking about a GR Yaris. Personally, I like the high seating position, I prefer the lack of outside exhaust note. My only gripe is the awful horn sound, sounds like a moped horn and there is nowhere to put your phone securely
When Toyota want to build something exciting, they know how to do, for sure
Seems to be priced similar to a Mini JCW, would be interesting to see how well they compare on the road and in sales
JCW rides like garbage and no stick (edit: I was thinking of the GP)
@@papa_pt And their GP3, which as far as I can tell is what they want their "track car" to be, is still a fat ass and FWD. Also, take any Mini and see how much you can sell it for compared to the GR Yaris.
The Yaris has way more performance.
Its better than fwd, it has awd 😂. Its real competition is gonna be the wrx imo
@@dancinglizard3080 AWD doesnt make the car always better. But with the Limited Slip differentials on each axle this car will be superior to anything in its class.
This is the car that led me to your channel no one was talking about this seemingly great release except you. Been watching you ever since looking forward to this one, I will watch it tomorrow, gotta sleep now!
"Circuit Pack" edition comes with these additions over standard GR:
a) 10-spoke forged alloys (vs 15-spoke cast)
b) 4WD with Front & Rear Torsen Limited Slip Differentials & Circuit tuned suspension (vs standard 4WD Open Differential)
But you LOSE out on these "Convenience Pack" features:
a) Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Navigation
b) JBL® Premium Sound System
c) Voice recognition
d) Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
e) Illuminated entry system
f) Head Up Display (HUD)
g) Chrome centre cap surrounds
h) Front and Rear parking sensors
i) 8 speakers (vs 6 speakers on Circuit Pack)
That's a lot of features to lose that most would expect nowadays. So if you want a 'normal' fast hatch with electronic toys and parking safety you know which one is for you. Alternatively, if you want 'balls-out' track orientated version (same weight / power output) then its the Circuit Pack edition for you !!
source: www.toyota.co.uk/new-cars/gr-yaris/build
I did fancy the HUD and the parking sensors would have been nice to have, but I wanted the proper diffs.
@@chrisroberts1440 Yeah, I know where your coming from. But I do find it rather odd that they don't offer the diff-version with all the toys as this would sell more of them - Bizarre sales limitation?
Especially when you consider that the diff-version doesn't have any standard weight / performance benefits over the Convenience Pack (excluding cornering). So it could be a costly mistake down the line for Toyota.
None of those 'convenience' features are important, especially in a small light hatchback, so I'd happily take the Circuit pack.
All that convenience pack stuff is tosh, wouldn't want any of it. I'm glad you have the option not to buy all those useless options. Standard but with diff's would be best spec. Unfortunately if you want the diff's you need the circuit pack and that comes with concrete dampers. What happened to picking your own options? Apparently WLTP, they would have to test every option example to WLPT standards, hence the packs.
I’ve followed this car’s story from announcement to launch with serious interest. I understand the desire for ‘all the toys’ and that’s fine - I drive a pretty fully loaded RS4 Vorsprung - but on a weapon like this, I’d just want to concentrate on the visceral driving experience.
Circuit Pack iteration is just fine and I am so tempted...
A quick little Yaris. I love the idea. Thanks for nice descriptions, your movies are friendly to watch for a blind person like myself.
This is a great review with a lot of detail on the car - better than a lot of the other you tube reviews out there👍👍👍
Thanks!
The perfect base for a track weapon. This Friday we had one of the first cars in Germany in our workshop and fitted our 9.5x18 wheels with 255/35-18 semi slicks. What can I say...fits plug and play and lift the car on another level. The first laps on Northloop are already done. 👍
This is Toyota's way of asking the car enthusiasts community for forgiveness for the Prius. I love it, I want it. Great video James.
Their next "homologation special" will be.... WRC is moving to hybrids. Squeaky clean and quiet through town, Makinen with his rear hooked up to a light socket down country lanes.......
Besides, the Prius needs no apologizing for. It's awesome at what it was designed to be awesome at. Just like this one seems to be.
@@paulnorman8274 The Prius is superb and has allowed huge advancements in hybrid tech. But it's not geared towards petrol heads or performance vehicle enthusiasts..
This thing has future classic written all over it 👌🏻
I had 3 new ST205’s if I had a garage I would buy one of these in an instant, I can’t see anything like this coming again. And Jebus that was a professional review, I don’t think anyone is doing it better currently.

Almost all car reviewer on RUclips are very excited and gave a good result on this car!!!!!
Excellent to see this in my youtube feed!!
I usually don't like new Toyota's but this one has really caught my eye. I suspect this car will soon be a future classic that will increase in value after it's about 25 years old and we miss the performance petrol cars as we enter the days of only electric cars being produced from 2040 onwards.
One thing to mention is that it is a homologated car, to even have comfort or circuit options at all is testament to the Toyota brand!
Yes mate! So excited about this car and you are just the guy to give us a decent review :)
Sad state of affairs in North America, that this thing has me seriously considering moving to Europe just to get one.
there are so many great cars in america that are not available in europe... also taxes are insane in europe
@@Mgoblagulkablong yea but ... depends on taste, i would say its worth moving if the guy has a better taste for eastern cars other than american ones.
@@eliaspottersson4719 It's absolutely not worth it to move, if you like cars it's not the right time to live in Europe. These are our last sports cars. Because of emissions rates we simply ain't getting the next generation. The next Z's not making it, and even the 2021 BRZ isn't.
People can't get what they can't afford. The governments make sure people can't afford nice cars. Manufacturers understand that they're not gonna sell anything, so they don't even try.
@@vuriby However, Europe does have a lot of nice hot hatches that North America doesn't. The only ones from new we have now is Civic Type R, Golf GTI and R, and the Veloster N. Toyota is coming out with a hot hatch but no one knows anything about it so for someone like me who wants an AWD hot hatch that's not a Golf R, the only thing is the Focus RS and there's a lot I don't like about the RS
As you know James I am a regular and subscriber to your great cartube channel.
But I feel like putting something back into the online car enthusiast community, and not be typically critical!
I feel like throwing a big nugget in here to all cartubers, as I’ve not seen any of you run with it so far?
Never in the History of the Automobile, in this Cov-19 Pandemic year, or never in my lifetime, I was born in 1965, has the Car become much more important to us all, other than just a means of transportation!! Many of us have been forced to live within the small boundaries of our houses and homes. Our cars are the PERFECT means with which we can all still safely go out and live somewhat during this time! With our Car’s inherent “safety cocoon”!! I am sure it has been more than just commuting, they are directly keeping us all sane, more healthy, contributing to our overall mental health and most importantly making us all feel more optimistic about our Post-Pandemic lives!!!! In my eyes, this has been the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!!
I should mention this as well. I am sure many of us here know of the inevitability of a financial recession happening world wide now. And many, many large and small companies going broke. Many larger companies crying they’ve had the worst sales this year in their short histories, ie Car Manufacturers.
BUT! I am sure I am not alone in noticing this right now! Who knows of a family member or friend, that has bought a new or even brand new car this year? For me, 2 neighbors have bought brand new cars, my niece bought a brand new SUV this year, and I have seen more trailers with old cars ontop than ever before in my street!!!! I have even added an old classic car to my Dream Garage Collection this year!! I personally think we are all buying MORE cars this year then I can remember…No matter what the media is telling us all about, with our inevitable recession, and no one having any money to spend.
In short..It really is the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!!
My 2 cents. I’ve put forward this year to our online car enthusiast community.
And thank you, if you’ve read my longish comment this far and for the couple of minutes of your time!
This has become my new dream car

When he says it drives more like a lancia delta integrale evo, i know from currently owning one its going to be an amazing car.
Ah great, now I want one, and I can't have one, day is RUINED
Ruined ever since they announced it wasn't coming to America
Manual. 90% couldnt or wouldnt drive a manual.
Looks like an awesome car. So glad Toyota have made a performance 4wd car again. Also love the gearbox options, 6spd manual only, not ruined by stupid autos or flappy paddles.
This car is a pure dream. The chasie, the engine, the drivetrain. The whole setup is just next generation. There is no need to tune or add nothing. Absolute killer of sport cars. My advice to Toyota is to make it large production, as it is, for the next 30 years. Too bad I will probably never have it.
The way you talk about cars reminds me of the old Top Gear, spot on, to the point and with a little bit of humor.
Keep it up!
Thanks! Old Top Gear was my inspiration so good to see people pick up on it
@@JayEmmOnCars I am quite surprised you answered! Old Top gear was one of my favorite shows to watch, so its nice to see you keeping the spirit of English men talking about cars alive.

Secondly, there are 3 rival YT car reviewers who've assessed this car at the same time : Jonny late brake, carWow Matt and then there's JM way out in front with his command of the English language, ability to honestly communicate the cars' plus and minus points, a birra' un-quantifiable passion and... as always... a solid grounding in the art of using the rest of the car world to put the current test vehicle into context. Great review as always. So nice you compared it to your GT4, a childhood dream car👍
Jay you broke the embargo before Jonny @ The Late Brake Show. Congrats.
Excellent review!
It's amazing. You never see cars like this anymore - done properly. CEO's are no longer enthusiasts in the field they overlook, which is a shame. At the end of the day, it's the money that counts to them and not the heart and sole of the car, recognising there is and always will be a trade-off. Thankfully we do still have enthusiasts like Akio and peeps over at Honda who share the same thoughts. I'd struggle to think of a newly built car (bar the Yaris GR) I'd like to own, over something like an MX5 or S2K. PC Health and Safety and profit margins are todays driving force which is sad to put it lightly. This review has reminded me there are still people willing to put in the effort for the sake of enjoyment. Thank you!

I think that the GR Yaris is going to be a future legend and more so because it is the only one of its type at the moment, in the past we had Escorts and Lancias, Evos and Subarus, unless VW release a Polo to match it. Mr Toyoda commissioned the LFA and was one of the engineers and test/race drivers on the projects, he did a N24 in it. Great to see that they still have CEOs in Japan that love building and racing cars.
The fact that the United States never sees anything like this when they've got a stiff on for muscle cars makes me cry.
This is like a throw back to the 90s.
I never thought I would like a yaris. Although I never thought I liked Toyota Caldina but then I found my one. Turbo, 4wd and manual
This is a special car no doubt. I can see these not selling, shifting at a discount and then becoming really desirable in the used market...
Gonna have to correct you james, this car isnt technically a homologation special since the rally car it was built to homologate never eventuated, so the fact they made it even without the rally car is even more impressive.

Hi, I live in Japan, drive an ND Roadster, drive 400km a week for work in a work car, and I just gotta say. The myth about Japanese roads being glassy and smooth is an out and out LIE. I would put the road you are driving on in this video as about twice as smooth as the majority of roads I use during the week. On mountain roads, we also have these wonderful drains across the road, that are covered with a metal grate, oh those do a number on wheels. I've bottomed my ND out on mountain roads a few times.
Toyota hats off for letting your hair down here but, only a small market? Was this a PR stunt that has backfired? This will not be as far as I can see a “classic” in years to come. Great Content JM once again.🌞

I really enjoy your reviews fella, you do a stirling job, without that - trying too hard feeling - some reviewers give me. Many thanks
I haven't been excited about a new car in quite a while, but this one gets my juices flowing. If you can have the horrible fake interior engine noise coded out, it would be such a cool car to run. Lovely to see this in a Toyota lineup. Beats the hell out of the BMW Zupra, if you ask me.
I think it'll sound pretty good with a *decent* exhaust, 3ctlinders can sound pretty gnarly!
Waaaaaayyyy too expensive, though. May pick one up in 5-10year or so cheap :D
From a norwegian perspective £30-33000 is ridiculously cheap, here it cost close to 600000nkr(equivalent to £50000) thanks to those morons called the government, who only want EV's 🙉😫
@Ryuichi Tanaka Yeah. It's not a "bargain", but this is a bespoke Yaris that in every way (interior aside) is not a Yaris. Just the cost of the dies to make the panels alone is going to take some time to pay for themselves.
@Ryuichi Tanaka well in the WRC, what competition do they have? And yet they do it anyway at a huge cost That'll change of course with the new Hypercar catagory.
But Toyota make enough money to push the boat out and amazingly they have done that. In each case of the GT 86 and Celica, I'm pretty sure they they get to make many more of their cars than the Scooby and BMW. 100% sure in the case of the Subaru. So they've made more than enough money from those projects.
But just like the LFA which lost a shit load of money, it was a example of what they can do. TOYOTA!!! Who on earth in these recent years are doing that as a mass market manufacture?
@L W They will slightly drop in value in the next couple years then go up inevitably. They said the same thing in 2016 when the Focus RS launched, look at them now.
I agree, for the price range in the US, I'd still go with a Civic Type R-and the next generation may be even more potent.
This the future model for success. Light and powerful with eco credentials.
You can really see your excitement about this car during the intro! Despite the shortfalls of the car, sounds like great fun to drive... It's made me want one!
This car is needed, simple, very refreshing considering some of the tech fests currently on sale
Only just watching this now. Amused by the comments about difficulties selling it. As of this morning, the lead time is Q3 2021... Mine is hopefully landing before that!
I think its more important to reliaze that when people are buying EUDM AE86's for 20k, a brand new homoligated car with new and amazing technology for 30k is a pretty good deal in comparison
Good video j nice to see you thrashing it around country lanes where it belongs be nice to see someone taking a bit off-road which is what it's made for or around a track you've got a solute Toyota for making this car in if they don't make a profit is made a statement a bit like the Honda e they said we gonna do it no matter what what this is for our fans and to stand out from the rest.
This sort of makes up for us not having the Mitsubishi Evo anymore.👍
