    One thing I haven't heard much about the GR Yaris is that the mirror is double jointed which means you can lift it up by around an inch. It was the first thing I did when I picked mine up...well apart from turning off all of the annoying warnings. Very few mirrors have this ability.
    Cheers from Oz.

  • @Wolfox360

    The nice thing of that center mirror is that you can push it up because it has two ball joints. Just have to hold it on the sides, because if you put your fingers on top you can't push it all the way up. You will get some more front visibility.

    In Japan, we have a 'no-frills' trim level for the GR Yaris called the 'RC' (search on google images) - it doesn't come with that obtrusive infotainment screen that Joe mentioned, and it doesn't come with those attractive 18" wheels wrapped with the PS4S - it so happens to be the cheapest model of the range because it is intended for competition use (eg rally stages, trackday events etc). The Toyota dealers in Japan can fit a roll cage and afterwards, its up to you to change for more aftermarket suspension, seats etc.

    That moment you work at MINI as an engineer and you see Toyota release the car you should have build as the new GP.
    Instead you get told to add a bunch of horrible looking arches to the body work, because that is what GP stands for...
    It shows once again that the Germans in Munich have lost the plot #facepalm
    The Yaris is breath of fresh hot hatch air in an automotive world where bean counters and mentally lost design teams look down on engineers and colleagues who feel they are enthusiasts wanting to build proper driver's cars.
    There won't be many of those in the future, people. Cherish the GR Yaris, but more importantly for all your engineers reading this. It is time to let yourself be heard. If the Japanese can do it, than anyone can build a car like this which got more amazing praise then any new hyper- or supercar in the year 2020.

    Impressive video from such a small amount of time with the car. Shame that Toyota haven’t just given you one for a longer review. Also, that mirror reminds me of the sun visor in the VW Up. It was about the size of the whole windscreen and made absolutely no sense in such a small car.

    1200kg, dual LSD awd set up, great engine. This thing will destroy cars even with 100bhp more on the track. Because of the weight you can brake later, carry more speed around a corner, and put power earlier on exit. Can't wait to see times once tracks start opening up.

It also helps you out when changing up a gear. Tbh I'm not as bothered anymore as I thought I would be and am going to put it back onto auto in all modes, helps me out on spirited drives going into corners mostly ofc

    Hey Joe! I know this video is a year old but I had a very quick question… how does the yaris AWD stack up with the G8X AWD system??
    Also my other question is if you had limited funds either only enough to buy a G8X and keep it stock or buy a GR Yaris and add all the bolt on’s and mods you can(for daily driving and mountain/track days), what would you rather?
    Coming from a 22 year old who’s owned nothing but 2 F30’s and an F80. Got to drive a GR Yaris for 2 weeks and I loved the platform, but I couldn’t decide what I wanted as I could daily and weekend both. Need your opinion!!!! Loved this video, the negatives were spot on

      I think you need to ignore the base car when trying to fit this into the market. This is a homologation special which we haven't seen since the Evo and Impreza battles in the WRC and is the closest thing to a road going WRC car in years. The i20N is not competing with this, I know a fair few i30N owners that were having test drives of the GR and some ordered straight away, I'm keeping my N for now but the GR is on the radar when change time arrives. This is what the Golf R could and should have been with a little vision but VW played safe and produced a car that sold well but is dull to own and drive once you get past its standing start performance.

    • @OnlineHousehusband
      @OnlineHousehusband 3 года назад

      @@bat33.12 I do agree it is a very special car but I think I'd still take a FK8 Type R GT for the same money. Also a focused track weapon ....yes no AWD but still equally as good imo.

      4wd with LSD in both axles is a selling point with the GR4 reminds me of my old Evo but fwd hot hatches are fine in winter with a tyre change. finding 20" winters or all seasons might be a test it was tricky finding 19" winters for my i30N and after having a 270bhp hot hatch on 19s disgrace itself in the snow up an incline in the past it's not much fun. Depends if it's a daily and what the winter is like where you live though.

    • @OnlineHousehusband
      @OnlineHousehusband 3 года назад +1

      @@bat33.12 Yes completely agree Paul, FWD with 270/300bhp in the winter is not much good, loads of slip and spinning up at the slightest sniff of grease on the road. The GR would be an epic all year round car and excel in the UK winter. It does also remind me of the cars which were around when I was growing up, Celica GT-4, Impreza's, Pulsar GTI-r etc.

    I understand the rear-view mirror aspect, but there is absolutely no way that the infotainment screen could be blocking your view. You are seeing right over it. You'd have to be 4 feet tall for that to impact your view.

    • @motosnape
      @motosnape 3 года назад

      As said in the video, the top of the screen is significantly higher than the dashboard it’s mounted too, coupled with a large rear view mirror, so the bottom of the mirror encroaches into the windscreen view, you end up with the letterbox effect.

  • @AlexTenThousand

    The GR Yaris is a rare beast these days. In this world of boring, same-y cars and bulky SUVs, we've forgotten the joys of the Homologation Specials. The strict rules of the FIA have given us some truly magnificent cars, most of which have disappeared - Mitsubishi, in a hypocritical statement about "emissions" (despite still making plenty of SUVs) discontinued their Lancer EVO line, Subaru has only taken the latest generations of the WRX to the United States, Lancia has been reduced to a city car brand, Peugeot hasn't given us performance-focused 200-series cars since they retired from the WRC in 2005, and Mazdaspeed is a distant memory. In such trying times for car enthusiasts, the GR Yaris and Gazoo Racing are a ray of hope for enthusiasts.

    The amount you pay for this car isn't for the leather seats, infotainment and the "badge" it's for the engineering done to the chassis, wheels, engine and Toyotas reliability record but nobody seems to buy a car these days for longevity but rather like other tech upgrade to the newest and fastest model. Toyota must lose money on this car as its built by a team from scratch to finish and not conveyor built. Great review as always Joe thanks, try the Litchfield upgrade too.

    I am also 6'-4", and have passed on many cars I wanted because my head hit the ceiling, or my knees hit the dash (or both). Worldwide, their are tens of MILLIONS of people who are this tall. Why Japanese (and most) car companies don't bother to hire 1 guy to sit in the cars early in production is a complete mystery. There should be enough headroom, there should be enough legroom, and the steering wheel should telescope out far enough to be usable when someone is sitting with the seat all the way back.
