I love Rory's passion and the way he articulates the driving experience, but there are a number of things he mentions about this car that should be corrected - the price starts at £30k not £33k (£33k not £36k for the Circuit Pack), the gear lever is raised 50mm (not 10mm), the normal driving mode is 60% front-biased (not rear) and the roof line is up to 95mm lower (not 195mm). Also Toyota had to build 25,000 (not 2500) examples for WRC homologation.

Unlike the unreliable and gaudy Mercedes, this Toyota is an instant classic and because it's a limited production vehicle (at least it was until the idiots at WRC decided to require hybrid powertrains to be used soon), it's a collectible too and will probably be worth a good amount of coin in the future. And it's a reliable machine.

    • @GCast-iv1pd
      @GCast-iv1pd 3 года назад +1

How can you say it's reliable? The 3cyl is a novel engine which has no history at all. Same goes with the car.
If you are basing that purely on the assumption that is a Toyota, then I'm sure thousands of Hilux, LC and Prius owners that would disagree with you.

Uber drivers drive Prius'. Not Benzes. For good reasons.
The GRY is a bit of an odd man out, as it really is a big break from how Toyota normally builds stuff. But if there was ever a low volume car whose expected reliability would deserve to be taken on a bit of faith, it has to be a Toyota where Akio himself is repeatedly putting his, and his "family business"'s name on the line the way he is with the GRY.
Toyota has more to lose than anyone else, from the reliability of their offerings ever being as much as even questioned. The reputation they have built up wrt reliability, is not unlikely the single most valuable intangible asset owned by any company, in any business, anywhere on the planet. To throw that away, and on a car which Mr Toyoda himself is all over the place promoting to boot, would be almost criminally stupid. And Toyota isn't exactly known for the stupidity of their management decisions, to put it mildly.

@@paulnorman8274 Benz are more expensive than a Prius so that's the main reason, nothing more. Taxis here is AU are mostly Koreans as they are cheaper. Can I say a Hyundai is more reliable?
The reason run-of-the-mill Toyota is reliable is because its intentionally made to underperform. They run on average of 50-70KW per L. The GRY does 125KW/L. If you have any idea about motorsport, you'll know that that's a lot of stress put in the engine. To say that the GRY have the same reliability as their workhorses defies physics and simply put, just barber talk.

Very nice review! I've ordered one which will approx. be delivered in October next year. But I've to correct you: in normal mode it sends 60% to the front and 40% to the rear, not vice versa.
Included in the circuit pack are not just the BBS forged alloys with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and the Torsen diffs front and back, but also painted brake calibers and a better suspension.
Don't ever think about not to choose this, if you would like to buy one.
What I miss painfully are two other things coming along with the circuit package in Japan: the front strut brace and an intercooler water spray kit. I've no idea, why they didn't put it in the package in GB or the EU. But, there is a way with aftermarket parts as well.
Another thing is, that you've compared the GR Yaris to the AMG A35, which starts at 54.180,70 € or 45.869,97 GBP. The GR Yaris comes at 37.640 € / 31.866,43 GBP with the circuit pack. That is like comparing apples and pears. Concerning the engine sound via the speakers: they put a microphone in the engine bay, it's not the exhaust sound you are hearing inside the car. But well, it's a bit too "well-behaved" in that matter from the outside. Maybe Toyota wanted to avoid complications with noise restrictions coming stricter and stricter in different countries. But again, this is a drivers cars and a tuners car with lots of aftermarket solutions.

It’s just well thought of now.
The Bugatti Veyron was hyped, but delivered on that and then some.
The GR Yaris is not 261bhp
How much is the rear of the roof dropped by?
It’s a three door, not a two door.
(The E30 M3 is a two door body)
    Prices all wrong! Oops!
    Drive train modes?
Normal is front biased, not 60% to the rear!
It has a long wheelbase, not short.
You can’t red line it in 3rd gear and be legal in the UK.

No specifics about why its 'so good' though. Cant get the back end out, exhaust sounds crap, vision out of the front is cluttered due to the infotainment screen being too high, steering wheel lacks adjustability. I didn't hear enough specific positives aside from power

The reintroduction of the BMW 8 series, I was expecting soo much because the First 8 series was the first Road car with a V12 engine coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and was one of the first vehicles to be with electronic drive-by-wire throttle, it was something that redefines the car industry and really hoped BMW did it again with some never seen before tech&design... but it ended up with a disappointment

Fab review man, as always. This is based on a rally car though, it's not meant to be placed against Merc A45 is not meant to be practical, nothing wrong with finally having an old school 3door SMALL pocket rocket, instead of all these huge 5 door hot hatches, not everyone is looking for rear doors wen looking at driving the said "hot hatch"

Can't understand why most reviewers bang on about lowering the centre of gravity, in the real world the only car ever to have c of g issue is the popemobile. (And the first A class) Aside from that the usual inaccuracies from Rory.
