I love Rory's passion and the way he articulates the driving experience, but there are a number of things he mentions about this car that should be corrected - the price starts at £30k not £33k (£33k not £36k for the Circuit Pack), the gear lever is raised 50mm (not 10mm), the normal driving mode is 60% front-biased (not rear) and the roof line is up to 95mm lower (not 195mm). Also Toyota had to build 25,000 (not 2500) examples for WRC homologation.

Unlike the unreliable and gaudy Mercedes, this Toyota is an instant classic and because it's a limited production vehicle (at least it was until the idiots at WRC decided to require hybrid powertrains to be used soon), it's a collectible too and will probably be worth a good amount of coin in the future. And it's a reliable machine.
How can you say it's reliable? The 3cyl is a novel engine which has no history at all. Same goes with the car. If you are basing that purely on the assumption that is a Toyota, then I'm sure thousands of Hilux, LC and Prius owners that would disagree with you.

I am glad you mentioned the fact that the 3 modes don’t really count for a lot on the road. Proper, honest review this. As you say, a hot hatch should also be practical. They shouldn’t be well polished either, one of the ingredients is being a bit lairy.

Other hot hatch cars are strictly just soup up version of basic cars with the Yaris is a one off special not based on any of the Yaris besides it’s name Yaris
Rory mentioned the E30 M3 and having owned one at the time it was certainly not over hyped, drive one now and it would feel slow but the handling on track was amazing. I’m now in an 330e which is a better daily but would not match on the track due to the weight. All IMHO

Another thing is, that you've compared the GR Yaris to the AMG A35, which starts at 54.180,70 € or 45.869,97 GBP. The GR Yaris comes at 37.640 € / 31.866,43 GBP with the circuit pack. That is like comparing apples and pears. Concerning the engine sound via the speakers: they put a microphone in the engine bay, it's not the exhaust sound you are hearing inside the car. But again, this is a drivers cars and a tuners car with lots of aftermarket solutions.
The Yaris is living up to the hype because it’s been properly designed and executed by its manufacturer. Think about this for a moment. The new Supra is a great machine and after we see what Toyota has done with the Yaris, just imagine what Toyota could have done with a true Toyota only Supra. Just maybe one day, the Supra will return.
Interesting, as its light with awd with great hp numbers for the small engine. It seems to deliver at all the points that make cars fun to drive. The USA would dismiss this one as its a yaris. For me Id buy it today if I could.
