GR Yaris - What the Mini GP3 should have been ?!

  • History is full of iconic rally cars homologated for road use. Could the Toyota GR Yaris be the next icon. Designed for the WRC, but due to a twist of fate it will never fulfil that design brief, however it has all the required ingredients.
The most powerful 3 cylinder engine ever made, a rear biased four wheel drive system and a 6 speed manual gearbox. It is not without faults but in the video I share my thoughts on the most exciting hot hatch to hit the roads in years.
Massive thanks to Hendy Toyota in Bournemouth for letting me play with their GR Yaris demonstrator. Give them a call if you want to experience this car as well.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent video. I loved the serious start, the balanced review and the clarity of your narrative. Great job Pete. Clearly not going to be a car for me as a suitable run about and daily commuter to the rail station but exciting none the less. BUT if you can't abide fake tail pipes how, how how, can you tolerate fake enine sounds? Tricking your brain with sound isn't too far from trying to trick you eyes with looks ???

Great review. This is what the passion of driving is about. I have a Yaris GRMN and people say oh it's too expensive, it's not as good as the Fiesta ST, it's a crap interior.
It's an amazing car, you get excited looking at it and anticipating getting in it. The sense of occasion its what's it's about, incredible engine, great gear change, grip and diff to drag you through corners.
I have a pearl white Convenience pack on order and will upgrade it bit by bit to a full spec car and keep it until Boris financially makes it impossible to own a petrol car.

To my eyes/mind, this car is an instant cult classic. I've now watched several reviews and the more I see the more I want.
The three pot in the Mini Cooper is a great little engine however this Toyota three pot seems fantastic.
Having (yesterday) changed to Pilot Sport 4S tyres on my Vantage I can imagine the grip this little 4wd has.
Unfortunately, cars like this will become few and very far between, so we really have to commend Toyota for bringing this to market, though calling it a Yaris does give the wrong impression and may put off many buyers I'm sure.
Great review as ever, the beeming smile tells us all we need to know Pete.

Split is 60:40 to the front in normal not to the rear, lane departure is a long press on the wheel to disable. The shelf under the screen seems to hold a phone if it has a leather case but not without.
I think you summed it up really good when you said it doesn’t drive slowly well. IMT isn’t great when going slow as soon as you’re pushing on it’s great.

One of the best reviews of this little pocket rocket out there. Class act Pete. I'm a huge fan of 3 pots as my driving ownership attests to, Audi A2 TDI, up! TSI, up! GTI and now my MINI Clubman Cooper. Admittedly, my ownership of 3 pot engineering have significantly less power than the GR Yaris, but they were/are all characterful and capable units. A very well-packaged WRC for the road this one and a great weekend toy/investment if you have the money.

Another quality review of a quality crazy little hot hatch. Defo agree about the interior. Toyota could have spent a bit more on it and still have the same car performance wise.

I think this is the best review on RUclips. Not biased at all and pointing out a lot of the faults that would put me off. Well done! Too many RUclipsrs reviews come across a false and scripted.

Perfect for the B road to work blast... if only I still worked in the job that used such roads! This car would be a perfect choice.

Fantastic well made video and awesome review. Think we are going to see the prices of these rise for sometime. Soon there will be a rear seat delete for it just like the Abarth. But what a great fun car.

Normal mode is 60 front 40 rear then sport is 30 front 70 rear. Car is incredible and as if typing this comment if you order one today you are looking at May next year for delivery unless you get a cancelled order

Great summary, what you said about the mini's was something that crossed my mind a few years back. Buy 2 write-offs (mark 1 cooper s and early all4) and try and convert the cooper into 4wd rally car for the road. Can only dream though 🤣. Agreed 100% the GR gives you that in 1 off the shelf package. Wish I had the cash to get one.
Maybe Toyota will release a GRMN version with 350+ HP and people will sell this version at a knockdown price. Got my fingers crossed 😂

Your wish has come true with the grmn version but not 350 hp and only for the Japanese market

Love the car and content. Just a thought, since you have IMT is the pedal box more set up for left foot braking perhaps? Makes more sense in a modern rally weapon. 😁

I am mighty curious about the rumored GR Corolla that we should be getting in North America. It should be a little more practical and have a little nicer interior with the trade-off of being a little larger and a little heavier. Still, if it's close to the level of fun that this car seems to be then we are in for a real treat.

What a great little car, it might have a small boot, not a lot of rear leg room but both of those are 100% bigger than the GP3 . Not driven the Yaris but prefer the look of the GP3 just for the wing but it does look like you can use the power a lot better of the Yaris on the road but be interesting putting the 2 on track

Thank you Petrolped for another brilliant review.I know they're not comparable but if we get a similar smile on our face with a Fiesta ST I do not see why spend >30k for this Yaris. Having said that sounds from your review a fun little beast.
