I'd still like to know what the EVO would have done with tires and brakes that were not 20 years old... I know the Yarris GR has PS4s'es, all I can see about the EVO tires is that they were rounded quite a bit. On such a short and technical track the tire choice is critical.
@@sunsetgarage755 Well, I wish you felt the irony in what I said, obviously those tires and pads are not really 20 years old, they can't be, but they weren't new either. I understand TG wanted to compare stock versus stock, but at least don't do it on tires and brakes that are near the end of their life.
I was thinking the same. Also noticed the evo had a different intercooler so perhaps it's making a bit more power than stock, however as the poster above said the tyres are the main factor!
Alot of people forget that, he was the driving force behind development of the GR - even wrote off quite a few cars during testing to ensure everything was just right.
We really need to see the older cars on comparable modern tyres because most of these legends will be equipped with new rubber by their enthusiast owners. Perhaps a comparison between before and after fitting modern tyres as well could be interesting.

Nice! I had an EvoIV here in eastern Canada & it was the easiest car to control. It was so good in the snow. Where ever I pointed the wheel it went. I felt like the best driver in the world. I would make my own tracks in parking lots and drive them all day.

Plato just demonstrated the real reason why handbrakes/parking brakes shoud remain mechanical. Precisely for the sole purpose of emergency braking when you lose your brakes.
You can just use the button for the electronic handbrake while driving. It gradually applies more force until stop but is in no way as controllable as a manual handbrake.

Regarding power to weight ratios it's dependent on the situation I'd say, on a tight technical circuit a car that's 150hp and 1000kg would likely beat a car that's 300hp and 2000kg. But on a track with longer straights that 300hp is going to make a difference, mass is less important once the cars in motion on straights.
That time split considering the 20 years of development between them isn't bad . The Gr was developed by Tommi as well I think or atleast the rally version was. So you could see it as a kind of spiritual successor to the Evo in a weird way

The Evo VII actually weighs 1400kg, so that power to weight figure is going to be off. Always nice to see Fifth Gear. They've always had the best mix of new and old cars, supercars and also cars you can afford. I just wish Tiff and Jonny were part of the team still.
I have one GR Yaris with the circuit pack. One good thing (might be bad for some) is that it does not attract any attention. Other drivers ignore you, police ignores you, gold diggers ignore you. Until you drop a gear and slam the gas and you see BMW drivers wondering WTF just happened. And of course, when you get the attention, it's only from other car guys like you. As an owner, there are some minor things I do not like, but none related to the driving experience. For example, there are no parking sensors (only the camera) and with an ass as big as a Kardashian you need to be careful when parking. There is no light on the trunk (I installed some small battery powered lights) and some other minor things like that. But driving it is really fun and up to the hype
The Yaris time is also 0.5sec quicker than the 420bhp 996 turbo time from the other week. Very impressive and just shows how handling has improved over the years
I like how some people here are expecting both cars to have the SAME tyres and SAME suspension setup to see the difference between old and new cars. BUT the point is to see how almost everything has progressed in 20 years. Ofcourse the GR Yaris is better lmao. Also if you watch Tiff's old fifth gear video of the Evo 7, he said it had more brake fade than the WRX. Oofie.
People aren't complaining about brake fade, they're complaining about it having shagged brakes ie warped. What person would take their car to the track in a competitive setting and uses stuffed parts? "Heading to the track today to try and beat my PB. I've got plastic tyres and brakes that are warped like you wouldn't believe. Oh well, shouldn't matter, neither of those things are important". In other words. People don't want things to "be the same". They want the evo to be as close as it was to factory condition, not to be raced around a track with obviously degraded parts. Can't gauge progression if one car has degraded components and one doesn't - not accurately at least. It was flying lap of a short track to compare times - one lap to get things warm (like tyres etc) and one lap at full noise (the flying lap). On this particular track, I don't think brake fade would be an issue after one time attack lap.
Well the GR Yaris is the only car actually in this race due to one simple reason: You cannot get a Evo 3-4-5-6-7-8-9 that's not modified, crashed or ruined at all. Unless you pay Porsche money. Even if the GR is expensive for a small car at least it exists. And won't kill you quite so much in a car crash, hence the weight vs 90's cars. Still the lightest (new-ish) performance car out there aside from A110's and lotuses.
@@relentlesspursuit6894 The Evo is also wearing Sonic The Hedgehog's hairdo (from the FQ400) above the rear window. That must shave many, many seconds per lap...!
The GR Yaris is a total bargain for a modern car especially when it is a one off homologation special. The new CTR is £47k and fwd (🤣🤣) with very few fully bespoke parts like the GR which is almost a totally redesigned car....lol...ridiculous.
Chances are the evo still has good modern tyres, any enthusiast isn’t going to put rubbish tyres on a performance car. Sounds like the evo has had some induction work as well
1 second faster with 1 cylinder less. You might also have forgotten the bit where it's a Yaris...... Also price....want to guess what 31,000 2002 pounds is today...? Over £50,000.
If the Evo had better brakes, if the Evo had better tires, if the Evo was faster we’d all be slagging the GR off. Just appreciate the GR for what it is, a Yaris that beat an Evo.
I don't think people are necessarily saying it would make the Evo faster (than the GR Yaris) around this particular circuit. I think it's more from a comparison stand point. It is a pretty bad comparison; using a car with stuffed brakes and old tyres. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that really.
@@yanceyboyz I have an evo, I don't need to watch a 20 year old review to tell me the stock brakes aren't that good. That doesn't mean its suitable to go to the track with already warped ones. I wouldn't. What sane, rational person would take any car to the track with already ruined brakes ?
Love the comparison, just an excellent video. Giving graphics of the stats was really helpful. But I didn't realise torque was measured in nanometers these days 😜 ... capital N for Newtons 🤓
The fact the Toyota Yaris has a standard 5 YEAR WARRANTY which if serviced at Toyota can be extended to 10 YEARS is amazing plus you won’t get any boiling brake fluid and the Evo Mitsubishi was well known for blowing engines - Yaris all day for me. Had one for a year and they are brilliant- definitely have another 👍
Aesthetically, I prefer the GR as I've always preferred 2 doors... but I see where you are going with the question. EVO arguably has more street cred, a higher future value, and it's more practical.
Some people argue Group B rally cars would be faster than modern WRC cars. This video and the Cossie Escort vs modern Fiesta ST one show that the progress of technology makes all the difference.
I know which one I'd rather have, drive, own and want to be in, you just can't beat the looks of the evo series, give me an evo 6 any day, total dream car for me.
The Evo's body rolls too much, maybe a brand new and stiffer suspension would cut half a second. Fit better tyres like Michelin PS cup 2 then perhaps it has a chance to beat the GR Yaris. I think the evo loses a lot of time in the corners.
Amazing Video Guyd Congrat on the 20 years!!! Btw as some one who experienced brake failure twice I wonder how is it even legal for Car Manufacturers these days to remove this crucial safety item!!!
I prefer the old school lag tbh, I have a GR Yaris CP and a Celica St205 GT4 and you cant beat the feeling of old school boost! the yaris is bloody quick down twisties though!
Genuine lol at some of the comments. There is 20 years of development in it and the Evo still did well. Lusted after the Tommi Mak edition and still do.
For full balance in the test, I wonder if the EVO's suspension bushes, brakes etc. had recently been overhauled and has it been messed with over the years, like a hot air cone intake for example?
How compact hatchback GR Yaris with 4 seats and 174L of boot space weights almost the same as 5 seater Evo 7 sedan with 400L of boot space? Considering they've got quite similar capability. What is that we've lost in those 20 years?
He said that the GR Yaris is the most powerful 3 Cylinder car you can buy. I’m assuming they aren’t aware that the GR Corolla uses a higher state of tune version of this same engine. It’s doing 300 Hp from the same 1.6 3 cylinder turbo paired with the same AWD system.
You cannot buy it in the UK or Europe, so for the purposes of this test - the GR Yaris is indeed the most powerful 3 cylinder that you can actually buy (unless you are viewing this from the USA or Japan)

Got the flat cap and the bifocals now, but JP still knows how to turn a wheel 😃👍
Always nice to see Fifth Gear. They've always had the best mix of new and old cars, supercars and also cars you can afford. I just wish Tiff and Jonny were part of the team still.
the tires on the Evo looked like they where original from 2002
They won’t be, the old ones would have perished and cracked by now
The Evo weights 1410KG, the GR Yaris 1270KG. That's not 50KG difference but 140....
Who would have ever predicted an Evo VII would go head to head with a Yaris!
The Evo basecar ist only a Lancer econobox too.
And lose! Lol!
@@sunrisesunset1734 you probably feel proud on barely beating ur grandfather at a football game
Barely beating grandad......while only having 3 cylinders....
@@yanceyboyz Like how the grandad Lexus LFa is still faster than anything you've ever driven? OK. /sarcasm
Super sick. Loving these insights into the teams development.
How fun does that evo look🕺🏼🎉
My favourite EVO and the 6 TM edition. Evo all the way compared to the Yaris.
Love this comparison and the cars featured! Thank you
EVO for the win on looks, fun & special feeling.
Have you tried a GR?
Love my GR, but still miss the Evo sometimes
The Yaris time is also 0.5sec quicker than the 420bhp 996 turbo time from the other week. Very impressive and just shows how handling has improved over the years
its will be interesting to put Michelin PS4s on the 996 turbo to be fair...
Tires has also improved over the last decades.
@@damianlody then you remember the price difference..
Love that show! Fifth gear is an institution! Cheers from Bulgaria
Are these cars on the same tires? Tires can make up more than a second a lap
Did u check them on same tyres? If not test is point less . Tyres can give a lot of advantages and couple seconds less in time
I'd still want the Evo, plus it's more practical.
Says the guy that owns a rotary.🤣
@@battlepug3122 My RX-8 drives like a sports car and seats 4 adults (for short trips) and has a big trunk, so it's "practical" also.
"Practical" is not a word that should be used when talking about performance homologation cars 🙈
It's only more practical in boot space and has 5 doors everything else no
I like how some people here are expecting both cars to have the SAME tyres and SAME suspension setup to see the difference between old and new cars.
I wonder how modified this Evo was, saw the HKS intercooler and wondered what else had been done
@@relentlesspursuit6894 The Evo is also wearing Sonic The Hedgehog's hairdo (from the FQ400) above the rear window. That must shave many, many seconds per lap...!
@Rotorhead500 must do, wonder what engine work has been done in addition to the intercooler upgrade?
The GR Yaris is a total bargain for a modern car especially when it is a one off homologation special. The new CTR is £47k and fwd (🤣🤣) with very few fully bespoke parts like the GR which is almost a totally redesigned car....lol...ridiculous.
@@tracktimevideos5164 totally agree with that
"They are epic, until the brakes fail" 🤣🤣 this made my day
The tires seem to be the biggest determining factor here. Both cars should have had the same exact tire for this test.
Result would be the same
@@relentlesspursuit6894 that's impossible for you to know
@@jmmeares the GR is the quicker car, as proved in the test - that I do know!
@@relentlesspursuit6894 maybe it was quicker in the test because it has better tires from the "track package" it has.
Chances are the evo still has good modern tyres, any enthusiast isn’t going to put rubbish tyres on a performance car. Sounds like the evo has had some induction work as well
1 second progress in 20 years. Mind blowing
That's progress for you - Toyota for the win!
1 second faster with 1 cylinder less. You might also have forgotten the bit where it's a Yaris......
Also price....want to guess what 31,000 2002 pounds is today...? Over £50,000.
@@yanceyboyz it's also down on power by around 50bhp - yet it still beat the old Evo
@@relentlesspursuit6894 Ask everyone ...they will take the EVO home 😂 Still ...20 years...1 second???😊
@@grabthecat no, they would not!
Watch the original review in 2002 by Tiff.....he was complaining about the Evo brakes after three laps, they were always rubbish.
@@yanceyboyz I have an evo, I don't need to watch a 20 year old review to tell me the stock brakes aren't that good. That doesn't mean its suitable to go to the track with already warped ones. I wouldn't. What sane, rational person would take any car to the track with already ruined brakes ?
You compare a old Evo 7 vs. a GR? Really? What about Evo 9 or Evo X? They are much faster!
great shootout ...I'm still buying an Evo IX FQ-320 when they are available for importing
Considering its a 20+yr old car, Im sure its lost a few ponies under the hood by now
Love the comparison, just an excellent video. Giving graphics of the stats was really helpful. But I didn't realise torque was measured in nanometers these days 😜 ... capital N for Newtons 🤓
Love to see Toyota back in the performance game
who doesn’t? Toyota makes good cars
i gues you want the GRMN yaris for a trac run ;)
The fact the Toyota Yaris has a standard 5 YEAR WARRANTY which if serviced at Toyota can be extended to 10 YEARS is amazing plus you won’t get any boiling brake fluid and the Evo Mitsubishi was well known for blowing engines - Yaris all day for me. Had one for a year and they are brilliant- definitely have another 👍
You had one and got rid of it?! I'm waiting for mine 1,5 years now, jeez.
Evo is better!
Great video but the music playing in the background at 25 seconds onwards is driving me nuts. What is it please anyone?
We need Tiff for some of that Clarkson-Hammond type banter !
Nah I’d rather just hear about the cars
Except Tiff is a better driver than either of them.
This evo reminds me quite alot of my EVO 9 days... well, because it was from the very same chassis!.. ill always be a fan!!!
🤣all the butthurt evo fan bois coping in the comments here. 🤣🤣
But which would you rather have, a mint condition Evo or a new hatchback?
This will run and run 😄
@@derlangsame7813 The GR Yaris, all day, every day
I would take the Yaris as it has CarPlay 😂
Aesthetically, I prefer the GR as I've always preferred 2 doors... but I see where you are going with the question. EVO arguably has more street cred, a higher future value, and it's more practical.
Great video!! We re looking forward for a similar shout out to the legendary EP3 Type R!!!! Keep going!!
A sorted evo would cuff that Yaris 😅
All things relative and linear, no, it wouldn't. That's like saying give the evo a head start and it would win.
Brand new for brand new the Yaris gets smoked
@@robertgirdwood1801 nostalgia is a hell of a drug 😅
Some people argue Group B rally cars would be faster than modern WRC cars. This video and the Cossie Escort vs modern Fiesta ST one show that the progress of technology makes all the difference.
EVO FTW
Except it didn't
Well at least its not electric I suppose...
Very true.
Agreed
Maybe the Evo IX MR would have been a better choice? 🤔
What's the difference between Active Yaw Control & a traditional LSD?
Oh yes long time to watch fifth gear!!JP is the man
Btw the evo is really a legend
How can I see a full episode or is this the new format? I love this more than ever, people actually reviewcars that can bloody drive
I prefer the old school lag tbh, I have a GR Yaris CP and a Celica St205 GT4 and you cant beat the feeling of old school boost! the yaris is bloody quick down twisties though!
It just goes to show, 3 sports cars released by toyota within 10 years, and all 3 are top class for what they designed them for.
Really keen on someone doing this test, but on gravel
Tyres make the biggest difference in a short track like this. If the evo had a new set of ps4s it would have been closer
Plato loved that brake mishap
Always love fifth gear over top gear! 🙂🙏
Great video
10/10
.
If the big man is giggling uz know it's a top car. love Plato legend. 😎🇬🇧✌👍👊
Would've really liked to see an Evo 9 on the same tires with new brakes & rotors because my mint would be on the Evo 9 in that comparison test
Be interesting to see if the Evo had the same tyre's how would it compare and also brake fluid change 😅
Genuine lol at some of the comments.
There is 20 years of development in it and the Evo still did well.
Lusted after the Tommi Mak edition and still do.
Top staff!!! Great to see
For full balance in the test, I wonder if the EVO's suspension bushes, brakes etc. had recently been overhauled and has it been messed with over the years, like a hot air cone intake for example?
Yes, it has an uprated intercooler and intake
How compact hatchback GR Yaris with 4 seats and 174L of boot space weights almost the same as 5 seater Evo 7 sedan with 400L of boot space? Considering they've got quite similar capability. What is that we've lost in those 20 years?
Great video 👏🏼💣
Let's agree both are fantastic cars..Evo unreal, GR the new unreal..3 cylinder 1.6..just wow
How many cylinders in an i8?
Bmw i8 combined power is 369hp and that's 3 cylinders. So that would be the most powerful 3 cylinder car you can buy.
Where these cars on an equivalent TW tire and how old were the tires on the EVO?
The evo is a cracking handling car.
Today GR yaris is the best of the best
GR CP=10
EVO=8
Would love to see E36 M3 vs G80 M3.
The evo will always be nostalgic for us 30+ y/o guys
I wonder if younger people see these classics and go oh cool and buy them or are only into the current stuff
