I've lived in Saudi Arabia for 20 years..and I've got an archeology background. For years I've been yelling , ""Stop the car and let me take photos! This has to be something archeological!" I'm so happy to finally see this!! They are absolutely everywhere in the northwest of the country.. It's been obvious to people living here for a very very looooong time.... Then the western archeologists arrive like heroic Columbus "discovering" America.
Don't blame western academics for all the ills of the world. I'm not from that mind set but rather of eastern philosophical back ground. I believe what has been stalling any academic developments in SA and many Islamic countries is exactly that. Islam. They won't allow anything to have existed before Islam and rather destroy any evidence of it. That mind set didn't allow academics from exploring.

This is one of the only things that make me sorry I'm getting old. They have found so much in the last 30 yrs. or so that it completly changes everything we were taught in school! They don't even have time to write a book on ancient history any more. I've learned more in the last 5 years than most of my life.

I'm in my 60s and feel as you. So much has been uncovered from Turkey and through the fertile crescent that is simply mind boggling as to it's age to the end of the last Ice Age in many cases.
I agree about learning things late in life . But that only makes me hungry for more knowledge. I am now trying to teach my grandchildren what I am learning everyday. They call it grandmas home schooling . They are only 5 and 7 but never to young to start teaching them.

My coworker and I drove from Riyadh in Nov 2020 to Al Ula. We are nurses from the states working here. We hired tour guides which I highly recommend. It was an incredible experience I will forever cherish.

what's interesting to me is that the Bedouin locals knew the Mustatil predated the Nabateian structures, and their chief even said it was relayed to him by his ancestors that these are from the stone age. Very impressive if they knew that based on oral tradition alone.

Most religious countries or undeveloped countries destroyed their artifacts to cover up things that contradict their religion. As Rome colonized 5 continents by the 1750s, they destroyed artifacts. In fact it was one of the templars main jobs. Islam does the same. That is why Britain saved as much as it could, so it would not be destroyed. Many people are looking for “steps to salvation.” People like the idea of an instruction manual with five steps that, if followed, will result in salvation. An example of this is Islam with its Five Pillars. According to Islam, if the Five Pillars are obeyed, salvation will be granted. Because the idea of a step-by-step process to salvation is appealing, many in the Christian community make the mistake of presenting salvation as a result of a step-by-step process. Roman Catholicism has seven sacraments. Various Christian denominations add baptism, public confession, turning from sin, speaking in tongues, etc., as steps to salvation. But the Bible only presents one step to salvation. When the Philippian jailer asked Paul, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul responded, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:30-31). Faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior is the only “step” to salvation. The message of the Bible is abundantly clear. We have all sinned against God (Romans 3:23). Because of our sin, we deserve to be eternally separated from God (Romans 6:23). Because of His love for us (John 3:16), God took on human form and died in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21). God promises forgiveness of sins and eternal life in heaven to all who receive, by grace through faith, Jesus Christ as Savior (John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24; Acts 16:31). Salvation is not about certain steps we must follow to earn salvation. Yes, Christians should be baptized. Yes, Christians should publicly confess Christ as Savior. Yes, Christians should turn from sin. Yes, Christians should commit their lives to obeying God. However, these are not steps to salvation. They are results of salvation. Because of our sin, we cannot in any sense earn salvation. We could follow 1000 steps, and it would not be enough. That is why Jesus had to die in our place. We are absolutely incapable of paying our sin debt to God or cleansing ourselves from sin. Only God could accomplish our salvation, and so He did. God Himself completed the “steps” and thereby offers salvation to anyone who will receive it from Him. Salvation and forgiveness of sins is not about following steps. It is about receiving Christ as Savior and recognizing that He has done all of the work for us. God requires one step of us-receiving Jesus Christ as our Savior from sin and fully trusting in Him alone as the way of salvation. That is what distinguishes the Christian faith from all other world religions, each of which has a list of steps that must be followed in order for salvation to be received. The Christian faith recognizes that God has already completed the steps and simply calls on the repentant to receive Him in faith. It's encouraging to see the Kingdom open its borders now, to both tourists and scientists alike, to study the ancient landscape that is so close to the Fertile Crescent. I sincerely hope this continues with enlightened guidance from the international scientific community and the enlightened self-interest of the Saudi people for what can benefit the entire planet. Who knows what wonderous, fantastical, and amazing discoveries wait beneath rock, sediment, and sand of the Arabian peninsula? Hopefully we'll all still be here to see what mysteries lay in wait for discovery, and that we'll all be able to enjoy them as the overall story of our one shared humanity.
We are at the cusp of global totalitarianism. Science is now a mercenary for hire. There will be no trust in institutions, science will be looked upon with suspicion. And it will be well deserved, sadly. Science as the mechanism to gain knowledge is beautiful. But in the hands of powerful businessmen it's just another tool of control. I would like to be as optimistic as you are, but I can't anymore. These past two years made me cynical beyond the point of safe return.
The history of al ula is also told in the quran saying "those who lived in alula were granted with mighty strength" They built all of the houses temples and statues with their bare hands. This was a nice documentary.
While ancient Arabia tribes and their amazing buildings and carvings were mentioned repeatedly in Quran, there is no mention of Alula people under this specific name so this phrase doesn't exists in the Quran.

@@Allinda. It doesnt mention Al-Ula by name but it describes the people of Prophet Saleh called Thamud (which the name for one of sites Mada’in Saleh derived from) who lived there. The people of Thamud were much stronger than the people of Prophet Hud (Eber in the Bible) called the people of 'Aad who came before them, strong enough to carve and build such enormous homes and palaces. They are described in Surah Al-A'raf (Chapter 7) Verses 65-78. This verse however describes the ancient carved homes and palaces we've so far discovered in Al-Ula. "Remember when He made you successors after ’Âad (referring to the people of Thamud) and established you in the land-˹and˺ *you built palaces on its plains and carved homes into mountains.* So remember Allah’s favours, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.” [7:74]

Incredible work and such beautiful structures. With such resilience to last 7,000 years I often wonder if one day civilization will return to caves again to survive the next ice age, and the deserts will be green again.

Interesting and informative documentary. I’m Saudi and when I take a plane and see these structures, I always wonder who built it and for what purpose because these are scattered throughout Arabian peninsula. At some point, I know it’s for some ancient rituals due to the fact these are hard to be distinguished unless you are some feet above the land but I wouldn’t imagine these are soo old like 7000 years old. My favourite structures are the triangle with circle on its head,I think these deserve to be studied. Arabian peninsula must be archaeologically discovered since it’s one of the first places that ancient human migration started out of African continent and Arabia was definitely different from what it is today in term of weather and terrains.

There is no telling what could be uncovered under the thousands of sand hills throughout the deserts around Taif, Jeddah, and other cities. The sand storms cover any structures in the desert. So there is no telling what is under all that sand
This is like walking on March. The last place on earth with that density of undiscovered archeological treasures. Archeological tourists will abuse the fuck out of it, lol.
Their will be a very strict punishment on that if someone does it. Flogging, stoning, beheading take your pick. I doubt the site will be open to tourist for a long time. Artifacts will be placed in a museum along with photos of the site. Who would want to go into a desert just to deface something, get caught and be forced to walk back with no water while being beaten. That sound like fun in such a strict country.

Down below the area is dry also, desert area...but at one point in time it definitely looks to have had a river or rivers down below and probably very fertile wet land. You make a very good observation about it being a cemetery. Why do you think the areas are not any specific shape like a perfect circle or triangle like similar ancient gravesites found in Saudi Arabia?
@@EEA75 - Not a real criticism, my apologies, just grumpy old me wanting to get to the "real deal". I understand that it's an adventure rather than an archaeology channel and that's fair enough. There was one or two shots where you captured that downhill landscape but very briefly. Not enough for me to evaluate but seems like broken by ancient rivers, the kind of which existed in Arabia (and the Sahara) in the "pluvial" periods. I'd conjecture that the people lived downhill and that was probably their cemetery. Hopefully your video will attract someone with academic influence into properly excavating those mysterious mounds. In a manner, but the systement , "we are interested in the past" isn't true. They are interested in information. Which is different. They seek something other than what they are telling you. wow.. old town is fascinating! it's construction reminds me of some of the first large human settlements such as Çatalhöyük, Aşıklı Höyük, and other truly ancient early human villages going back 12,000+ years... I feel like we could learn a few things from it.

What an amazing documentary! I used to grew up in Al-Ula but what I've seen, I'm astonished of those triangles, rectangles, mustatil, pendants etc. Thanks Discovery channel! Excellent documentary and educational material. Having lived on the outskirts of the Empty Quarter from 2012 to 2017, I have an endearing respect for this unique dune laden desert. It is a beautiful landscape today. Arid and dry, hot in the day and it can get cold at night. Many of he secrets under those dunes may never be uncovered because of the huge mass of sand covering. The people of the area should be very proud. The concrete discovery of livestock domestication thousands of years before Stonehenge and the Pyramids is another Historic rewrite. In many ways as significant as Gobeki Tepe. Kudos to the crew and the locals.

I am happy to have traveled a lot, but somehow the highlight of my travels was Saudi Arabia, wich I visited last year, just before pandemic. I never cried, fascinated by the the beauty of a place, a city, nature, sights, until coming to Saudi Arabia and visiting Alula. We drove for 8 hours that day, fantastic scenery of the landscape that is constantly changing. The moment we were descending towards Alula I started crying, for some inexplicable reason, maybe because I was where few people were, maybe because of the beauty and unusual rock formations, or just the excitement. This place iz so amazing...

To answer the last question, I hope that they will be able to find and analyze the DNA of these ancient humans. @@AliciaMully It's from what we call "Hadith" which is the prophetic traditions(mainly what he said, but also observations of what he did and did not do) of prophet Muhammad, the Hadith/Hadeeth is not only that part but regarding your question it starts with " the hour won't rise" a literal translation, it doesn't specify which hour but in Arabic that means the time of something not hour as in measurement, and most Islamic scholars agree that it refers to the Judgment day (not dooms day, that's not a correct vocab in Islamic traditions), anyway the last part says "Murooj wa Anhar" wa = and, it says in plural, murooj means meadow and grasslands, an umbrella term for anything similar (Arabic has a lot of specific words for specific things), anhar is rivers, indicating that at some point the Arabian peninsula was a fertile land in ancient history, which at the time of the prophet it wasn't and people then believed it was a dessert since forever, but recent research proves that it was indeed fertile lands, you can google it, but if i remember correctly I think max planck institute has a lot of research on that, and it was around the ice age before 10k years, since the only livable belt on earth was on the horizontal line around the Arabian peninsula, that's why most/all ancient civilizations were on that line, Arabia/egypt/levant/ and indus in east. feel free to ask more, I don't want to spam more since it looks like a report :).

I've lived in Saudi Arabia for 20 years..and I've got an archeology background. For years I've been yelling , ""Stop the car and let me take photos! This has to be something archeological!" I'm so happy to finally see this!! They are absolutely everywhere in the northwest of the country.. It's been obvious to people living here for a very very looooong time.... Then the western archeologists arrive like heroic Columbus "discovering" America.

Many people are looking for “steps to salvation.” People like the idea of an instruction manual with five steps that, if followed, will result in salvation. An example of this is Islam with its Five Pillars. According to Islam, if the Five Pillars are obeyed, salvation will be granted. Because the idea of a step-by-step process to salvation is appealing, many in the Christian community make the mistake of presenting salvation as a result of a step-by-step process. Roman Catholicism has seven sacraments. Various Christian denominations add baptism, public confession, turning from sin, speaking in tongues, etc., as steps to salvation. But the Bible only presents one step to salvation. When the Philippian jailer asked Paul, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul responded, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:30-31).
Faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior is the only “step” to salvation. The message of the Bible is abundantly clear. We have all sinned against God (Romans 3:23). Because of our sin, we deserve to be eternally separated from God (Romans 6:23). Because of His love for us (John 3:16), God took on human form and died in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21). God promises forgiveness of sins and eternal life in heaven to all who receive, by grace through faith, Jesus Christ as Savior (John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24; Acts 16:31).
Salvation is not about certain steps we must follow to earn salvation. Yes, Christians should be baptized. Yes, Christians should publicly confess Christ as Savior. Yes, Christians should turn from sin. Yes, Christians should commit their lives to obeying God. However, these are not steps to salvation. They are results of salvation. Because of our sin, we cannot in any sense earn salvation. We could follow 1000 steps, and it would not be enough. That is why Jesus had to die in our place. We are absolutely incapable of paying our sin debt to God or cleansing ourselves from sin. Only God could accomplish our salvation, and so He did. God Himself completed the “steps” and thereby offers salvation to anyone who will receive it from Him.
Salvation and forgiveness of sins is not about following steps. It is about receiving Christ as Savior and recognizing that He has done all of the work for us. God requires one step of us-receiving Jesus Christ as our Savior from sin and fully trusting in Him alone as the way of salvation. That is what distinguishes the Christian faith from all other world religions, each of which has a list of steps that must be followed in order for salvation to be received. The Christian faith recognizes that God has already completed the steps and simply calls on the repentant to receive Him in faith.

It's encouraging to see the Kingdom open its borders now, to both tourists and scientists alike, to study the ancient landscape that is so close to the Fertile Crescent. I sincerely hope this continues with enlightened guidance from the international scientific community and the enlightened self-interest of the Saudi people for what can benefit the entire planet. We are at the cusp of global totalitarianism. Science is now a mercenary for hire. There will be no trust in institutions, science will be looked upon with suspicion. I always wish to visit Saudi Arabia to travel and learn about ancient architect.
The history of al ula is also told in the quran saying "those who lived in alula were granted with mighty strength" They built all of the houses temples and statues with their bare hands.

@@Allinda. It doesnt mention Al-Ula by name but it describes the people of Prophet Saleh called Thamud (which the name for one of sites Mada’in Saleh derived from) who lived there. The people of Thamud were much stronger than the people of Prophet Hud (Eber in the Bible) called the people of 'Aad who came before them, strong enough to carve and build such enormous homes and palaces. They are described in Surah Al-A'raf (Chapter 7) Verses 65-78. This verse however describes the ancient carved homes and palaces we've so far discovered in Al-Ula.
"Remember when He made you successors after ’Âad (referring to the people of Thamud) and established you in the land-˹and˺ *you built palaces on its plains and carved homes into mountains.* So remember Allah’s favours, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.” [7:74]

Interesting and informative documentary. I’m Saudi and when I take a plane and see these structures, I always wonder who built it and for what purpose because these are scattered throughout Arabian peninsula. At some point, I know it’s for some ancient rituals due to the fact these are hard to be distinguished unless you are some feet above the land but I wouldn’t imagine these are soo old like 7000 years old. My favourite structures are the triangle with circle on its head,I think these deserve to be studied. Arabian peninsula must be archaeologically discovered since it’s one of the first places that ancient human migration started out of African continent and Arabia was definitely different from what it is today in term of weather and terrains.
There is more than what we have been told about our history. Advanced techniques way older than actual history. Similar techniques everywhere around the world that we cannot explain, America, Europe, Asia, etc.

Hey Michael, there is nothing like Muslim or non-Muslim to be allowed to travel to SA. There are only two locations which are limited for Muslims and that is from religious perspective since they are sacred places and non-Muslim are forbidden to be there. Also, Saudi Arabia has launched new policy for international tourists from almost 50 countries (mostly non-Muslim majority countries as some people like to call it) and it will take you less than an hour to have it without any invitation ( check visitsaudi.com). Unfortunately, these eVISAs are suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions recently. You are more than welcome to visit the country when the life get normal again.

There is no telling what could be uncovered under the thousands of sand hills throughout the deserts around Taif, Jeddah, and other cities. The sand storms cover any structures in the desert. So there is no telling what is under all that sand

Down below the area is dry also, desert area...but at one point in time it definitely looks to have had a river or rivers down below and probably very fertile wet land. You make a very good observation about it being a cemetery. Why do you think the areas are not any specific shape like a perfect circle or triangle like similar ancient gravesites found in Saudi Arabia?

There was one or two shots where you captured that downhill landscape but very briefly. Not enough for me to evaluate but seems like broken by ancient rivers, the kind of which existed in Arabia (and the Sahara) in the "pluvial" periods. I'd conjecture that the people lived downhill and that was probably their cemetery. Hopefully your video will attract someone with academic influence into properly excavating those mysterious mounds.

Excellent documentary and educational material. Having lived on the outskirts of the Empty Quarter from 2012 to 2017, I have an endearing respect for this unique dune laden desert. It is a beautiful landscape today. Arid and dry, hot in the day and it can get cold at night. Many of he secrets under those dunes may never be uncovered because of the huge mass of sand covering.
The people of the area should be very proud. The concrete discovery of livestock domestication thousands of years before Stonehenge and the Pyramids is another Historic rewrite. In many ways as significant as Gobeki Tepe. Kudos to the crew and the locals.

I am happy to have traveled a lot, but somehow the highlight of my travels was Saudi Arabia, wich I visited last year, just before pandemic. I never cried, fascinated by the the beauty of a place, a city, nature, sights, until coming to Saudi Arabia and visiting Alula. We drove for 8 hours that day, fantastic scenery of the landscape that is constantly changing. The moment we were descending towards Alula I started crying, for some inexplicable reason, maybe because I was where few people were, maybe because of the beauty and unusual rock formations, or just the excitement. This place iz so amazing...

@@AliciaMully It's from what we call "Hadith" which is the prophetic traditions(mainly what he said, but also observations of what he did and did not do) of prophet Muhammad, the Hadith/Hadeeth is not only that part but regarding your question it starts with " the hour won't rise" a literal translation, it doesn't specify which hour but in Arabic that means the time of something not hour as in measurement, and most Islamic scholars agree that it refers to the Judgment day (not dooms day, that's not a correct vocab in Islamic traditions), anyway the last part says "Murooj wa Anhar" wa = and, it says in plural, murooj means meadow and grasslands, an umbrella term for anything similar (Arabic has a lot of specific words for specific things), anhar is rivers, indicating that at some point the Arabian peninsula was a fertile land in ancient history, which at the time of the prophet it wasn't and people then believed it was a dessert since forever, but recent research proves that it was indeed fertile lands, you can google it, but if i remember correctly I think max planck institute has a lot of research on that, and it was around the ice age before 10k years, since the only livable belt on earth was on the horizontal line around the Arabian peninsula, that's why most/all ancient civilizations were on that line, Arabia/egypt/levant/ and indus in east. feel free to ask more, I don't want to spam more since it looks like a report :).

@@AliciaMully Hey :), thank you, and you are welcome, I heard about that before but honestly I never checked Gaelic, I may know the reason but I better know a timeframe first so I can try to connect it, but in reality I can prove to you that there is a connection between Arabic and most human languages, there is even a discussion is Arabic or Sanskrit the mother of all tongues, but I can easily omit out Sanskrit(Many just wanted to believe so because they think it's an ancestor of indo-European), but my proof is easy, that most Sanskrit comes from an ancient extinct language (Ge'ez) from ethiopia, that comes from Arabic but the western resources say "Southern Ancient Arabic" but if you check Ge'ez words, it is exactly Arabic, even the same as of modern standard Arabic, anyway, I'd like to chat with you about that too and anything you wanted to discuss :).
