You could make a solid case that Qin She Huang Di is the most impressive figure in history based on his many accomplishments and the time when he lived. From producing the first unified China to the Great Wall to his monumental burial.
He was also the first emperor to standardize writing, measurements, and currency for all of China. Before him, there were many writing systems in place and the currency was madness since so many different countries had been formed and got abolished by other states(I think around 60 or 70 kings had ruled over different parts of China for over 100 years). He was one of the most important ancient figures for 1/5 of the population on earth. You can safely say he was one of the few people that truly change humanity before modern days.
Beyond the fact : Not even the recent technology does easily build this kind of masterpiece, forget the length, the wide, the tall etc but one thing is beyond our thoughts about building on the steep mountain terrain thousand years ago ... Totally speechless

I have been to the Great Wall. When I truly stood on the wall, I just realized how tiny a person is in the long history. that's a very complicated feeling.
Qin Shi Huang didn’t just build the Great Wall and leave behind terracotta warriors, he standardised language, script, scales and currency. Edit: why are so many westerners in the comments blabbering about the great wall death toll in ancient china? every single chinese child knows about it and we even have stories and legends of the peasants who suffered and died building the great wall. we respect them. why are white people getting on their moral high horse again? maybe you'll have space to sound so condescending if the roman empire didn't use slaves AND if your dutch, belgium, british, american ancestors didn't just have slavery a few hundred years ago and are still downplaying it today.

Can you pls tell me ...have this wall been ever used.....and I watched a video on utube about Mongols ...and they said that Mongols were able to invade China.
I went to JinShanLing and SiMaTai several times in the 90's, the last time being about 2002. It was not touristy way back then whereas Badaling near Beijing was just overcrowded with tourists. The views are definitely spectacular and the wall was broken in many places and also dangerous in others like one spot called "The Eagles Nest". Well worth a visit.
We rode our bikes there from Beida. We spent the night camping on the wall but not without first having to hide from the locals who were chasing us. This sort of behaviour was already suspicious back in the 90's.
Allan Maca, thanks so much for bringing the explanation of the Great walls to us. This has been so interesting to watch. NationalGeographic does an amazing job on all of the videos they produce. Thanks so much and maybe one day we will meet and talk.
Building a wall takes an architectural genius? 2200 years ago The Greeks were building beautiful temples and carving gorgeous statues that would be challenging to do today. Same with the Romans. So they must have been beyond genius.

Their lives did depend on it, both from their enemy the Mongols and the Chinese soldiers who made sure they worked as slaves their entire lives. The wall was built by peasants, slaves, criminals, and other people that the emperor decided to punish. Soldiers were involved in building the wall and in managing the workers as well. It is estimated that millions of people worked on the wall over the course of over 1000 years
Uh.. that is just an understatement. Lots of people lost their lives building it and many of them were part of the wall. Meaning they were just buried in the wall when they didn't make it while working on it.

The mountain section of the Wall must be the greatest engineering feat humans ever built. It is truly astounding how humans back then could build something like that, when with todays technology and calculations it would still be an amazing accomplishment
Many civilizations of old were far better in such endeavors than we are. Same goes for many types of simple machines and wood work. And it shouldn't be a suprise since they relied on such technology for their very survival and professions were life long affairs where incompetence meant starvation. Now imagine your motivation level to excel at what you do under those circumstances.

This is a great new way to analyze the Great Wall-- there's still so much to learn about it. About the Terra Cotta Warriors of Qin, I was thinking that perhaps the reason each warrior is unique is because they took impressions of the faces of his actual warriors, to immortalize them, as well. To honor them. ??
Its just extraordinary to think that a modern person can just read out a text written 2000 years ago without having to decode or change into the present text or language That is a big advantage when researching
Gotta shout out to camera and director on the wide shot of the terra cotta warriors scene: Have read about them and seen stills-but that wide establishing shot blew my mind. Knew they were unique and the site was “epic”. But holy Toledo and WOW! They ARE a whole freaking army…! Goosebumps. Go, Nat Geo.
I had the same feeling - thought I had an idea of the site from pictures, and I've even seen a few of them in a museum exhibit that traveled to the US (including life sized horses and chariots), but that wide shot was AMAZING. The living people circling the site were like ants...
Actually, the terra-cotta warriors were made based on real people, horses, and chariots, and even the size is almost the same. And what he said is that the expressions of each warrior are different, if you understand the details of this period of history, you will understand that this should be the earliest single-line accountability system in the world. It is possible to trace the person who made it according to the corresponding symbols on each pottery figure. If there is a production error, it will be either redone, or the person may face punishment or even death.
WOW! Just WOW! Absolutely incredible. I had no idea of the scope of the Great Wall Of China. As usual, thanks National Geographic for expanding my horizons! 😁
If they really wanted to, they could make a three hour long video packed with facts and interesting insights. That’s the way good production companies 40 to 50 years ago would do things. Better and more intelligently analyzed information was there for the small numbers of people who wanted to absorb it. Now it’s all about getting the most viewers by not stressing their attention spans too much. Maybe my take is “elitist”?? I don’t care. Profit motive degenerates everything.

They should and must be proud of there history regardless of politics what an impressive culture hats off to China......

I wish National Geographic would do shows without a western host at all and just interview the local researchers. Clearly the Chinese archeologists are very very knowledgeable about the subject, that one dude has literally seen half of the entire great wall of China. The host doesn't really give all that much information, at least everything he says can be found on wikipedia....

My Mainland Chinese friends say, if you haven't visited The Great Wall, you've never been to China. I have visited three parts of the Wall. One touristy (renovated), one semi-touristy (they fixed only the areas that can be dangerous but retained most), and the last one, untouched (they left it in its original state). I forgot the names of these areas though. The touristy ones were easy hikes. But when I got to the unfixed one, I only lasted hiking 6 watch towers. I don't even know how people back then can climb very high steps like about 600mm, even more. They just followed the slopes of the mountain so there will be areas where the slope might be too steep. The last one I visited (the unfixed one) was the most memorable regardless of the rubble because I saw the wall in its raw state and I am simply amazed how after hundreds of years, the wood in those stations are still intact. I thought they would have rotted by now.

the beacon tower also has an interesting story, they exist back during the zhou dynasty. one of the zhou king wanted to make his lady laugh so he lit the beacon, all the lord rush to the field like rohan only to discover it was a "joke", the lady did laugh, but when the raider really attack and the beacon was lit again, the powerful lord didn't came and the king had to flee, escorted only by the horse keeper who still came to the signal. as reward for escorting the king to safety, the horse keeper were given the land that was raided, this became what would be the Qin Dynasty that would eventually end Zhou and unified China... this is also partly why the other states tend to look down in Qin as they are not seen as particularly noble having descended from people that breed and care for horses for a living... of course they ain't laughing no more when they got conquered.

I went to Mutianyu near Beijing 6 years ago and it was some kind of unusual time. It was not hot but very warm, the sky was strikingly blue, a big difference for typical Beijing air quality. There was no one on the wall, no one. After a long while two young school girls dressed in uniforms came up, but no one else. After sometime passed and endless gazing, I turned and almost smashed into one of the girls. In a wall completely empty of people that goes on for thousands of miles, I found this odd. I then learned they were using me as a back drop for photo's. They may not have even seen a lao wai (foreigner) in person before, to get photographic evidence especially with themselves in it was likely special. Visiting other Beijing tourist area's, Chinese also there but from outside Beijing doing the same thing would even ask for a photo but most tried to covertly take them.
I'd be in awe. To walk on one of mankind's greatest feats, to touch a monumental object that has been placed there and touched by other humans long ago... It is right in front of me, bearing history, culture and expriences but forever silent. I wish I could ask the wall about its history lmao.

I remember going to China and walking part of the Great Wall, It is mind blowing to see it stretch endlessly across the ridgeline of the mountains.
I went to the desert section of the wall with my father in 2019, we spent 3 hours walking around the wall 20:11 trying to find artifacts, eventually we found an arrow head made of stone, ( it has a very distinctive triangular shape around 1 inch long, a quarter inch wide). Imagining ancient Chinese and Mongolian had been fighting in the exact same wasteland thousands of years ago just makes you tremble and amazed by how human civilization has comes throughout the history.
It's probably going be used again in the future 🥺
History is so fascinating. Especially with thousands of years of recorded history.
I am Chinese, but the history of the war between the Chinese and the Mongols in ancient times did not exceed 900 years.

You could make a solid case that Qin She Huang Di is the most impressive figure in history based on his many accomplishments and the time when he lived. From producing the first unified China to the Great Wall to his monumental burial.
Yes, he is the one who made the written language that last to today in china and used through out china (traditional Chinese).

He was also the first emperor to standardize writing, measurements, and currency for all of China. Before him, there were many writing systems in place and the currency was madness since so many different countries had been formed and got abolished by other states(I think around 60 or 70 kings had ruled over different parts of China for over 100 years). Looking at how solid the walls were, we can say that the builders built it like their lives depends on it.
It is estimated that millions of people worked on the wall over the course of over 1000 years
They did.
Uh.. that is just an understatement. Lots of people lost their lives building it and many of them were part of the wall. Meaning they were just buried in the wall when they didn't make it while working on it.

This is a great new way to analyze the Great Wall-- there's still so much to learn about it. To honor them. ??

Actually, the terra-cotta warriors were made based on real people, horses, and chariots, and even the size is almost the same. And what he said is that the expressions of each warrior are different, if you understand the details of this period of history, you will understand that this should be the earliest single-line accountability system in the world. It is possible to trace the person who made it according to the corresponding symbols on each pottery figure. If there is a production error, it will be either redone, or the person may face punishment or even death.
What's been excavated thus far is only fraction of what's still unexcavated!!
What a waste of money and time the egotistical king used to make the terra cotta warriors! And what's more perplexing is he buried them!

It was a complete, savage struggle. I don't know what you mean. In fact, they built this wall over 400 years just to feel safe from the Mongols. Thats insane !
Totally impressed by this interesting informative and educational documentary I have ever have the pleasure of watching. The thing I appreciated over all else is the fact that the focus is on historic evidences of the Great Wall. And I am even more impressed by the neutral nature of the narratives. Too often one comes across so called documentaries on China which under the cover is nothing but a read of anti-China rhetoric.
So enlightening and great storytelling. Thank you National Geography
Fascinating! I am SO jealous, this guy does what I was dreamed off all my life, it just didn't happened , but I can see who can. Incredible! Thank you!
Then just go, what's stopping you? Go to China and explore the wall!

@@kurbatska life is short, do/enjoy what ever you like.... I am one of the lucky few... I have visited all these locations mentioned in this video multiple times, even stayed over night in one of the watch towers in Jinshanling. Jinshanling/Simatai section of the Great Wall is so magnificent - must visit!
A good hat (roof) & good boots (stone foundation) are the key to a house lasting nearly forever.
i couldn't imagine the workers who built that huge structure...
a very impressive architectural achievements to the people who built this
This wasn't an achievement.... this was slavery. All great artifacts beyond the realm of regular structures are built that way.
@@AikawaMartialArts长城建设之前,奴隶已被解放,原因是自由人工作效率更高。中国的平民愿意为国家付出更多,尽管那很悲惨。

All of Chinas culture now resides in Taiwan. The CCP systematically, and deliberately destroyed all its ancient culture. For the good of its people?

How the farmers built such a large project at that time is really great. The tomb of King Qin Shi has not been dug up until now.
" The beacons are lit!, Gondor calls for aid! ....'' And Rohan will answer! " very exciting history btw.
the beacon tower also has an interesting story, they exist back during the zhou dynasty. one of the zhou king wanted to make his lady laugh so he lit the beacon, all the lord rush to the field like rohan only to discover it was a "joke", the lady did laugh, but when the raider really attack and the beacon was lit again, the powerful lord didn't came and the king had to flee, escorted only by the horse keeper who still came to the signal. as reward for escorting the king to safety, the horse keeper were given the land that was raided, this became what would be the Qin Dynasty that would eventually end Zhou and unified China... this is also partly why the other states tend to look down in Qin as they are not seen as particularly noble having descended from people that breed and care for horses for a living... of course they ain't laughing no more when they got conquered.
Lol
The lighting of the beacons is my favourite LOTR scene.
Loved every minute. So educational
Let's all stop picking apart every detail of the documentary and just enjoy the views and old history of China.

True. I'd like to see the complainers make a perfect informational video on anything. I'm guessing they can't and wouldn't even try.
I remember the first time I visited the Great Wall. It was the best year of my life.
When I went it was full tourists, littered w more trash and smell of urine.
Just trash everywhere.
OMG, bathrooms were so nasty...

Great documentary. So many new things to learn. Thanks to the whole team. Bravo♥️
12:11 Passion is when someone hugs ancient walls and gush over it.
Amazing. Documentary.
I'd be in awe. To walk on one of mankind's greatest feats, to touch a monumental object that has been placed there and touched by other humans long ago... It is right in front of me, bearing history, culture and expriences but forever silent. I wish I could ask the wall about its history lmao.
Yes. Look up the 7 wonders of the world. The great pyramids are also another mankind's greatest feat.
Been fascinated with the great wall since I was young. 40 years later these discoveries plus my learning of the vast fortress, has fired my fascination again.
just go !!
It was an amazing story . Finally revealed the actual length of the " great Wall of China " it's really twice it's length than actually known . The expertise knowledge of the two parties was astonishing . The head of the crew well is a genius in the business . Working along without the unesco in of the " in depth " looks like for sure could handle it well . For sure credit goes to both parties ......
This is very enjoyable. It is a great documentary
I would expect nothing less from the country that gave us The Art of War!
Do you know who rescued "The Art of War" for the Emperor.
Who translated it, then lost the original in a fire, by accident. A Jesuit Priest in China about 500 yrs ago.
I have a question ....actually I don't know much about the history of China ...but had this been ever used by anyone ....I watched a video on utube about Mongols ...and they said that Mongols were able to invade China....so at the end this massive human made structure is useless....which may have took millions of lives .
@@SinghGya I might recommend you look up some videos about said wall on a channel called "Newearth."
