Because of her troubled childhood, Lacey (lead singer) grew more and more into depression. She was planning her own suicide and her grandmother sensed something was wrong and forced Lacey to go to church that particular day. The priest spoke about someone in the room that had a ton of pain in their life and asked to come forward. She didn't go up, and tried to leave. On her way out, she was stopped by someone who basically told her not to commit suicide and there was a greater purpose for her in this life. He gave her a hug and she felt the presence of God. Long story short, the next morning that she was not supposed to wake up, she was Fully Alive. This is my summary of her story from Lacey Sturm's book.
I could be wrong, but I think that's more directly the backstory for "All Around Me." Although it was certainly monumental enough to inform all her music to a degree, I think.

Song meaning:
This song was inspired by Layla Palmer, the wife of Kevin Palmer (lead vocalist of Amity Lane, formerly of Trust Company). Layla has a condition called Palindromic Rheumatism, which causes her joints to fill with fluid, leaving her in great pain for months at a time and barely able to move. Despite her struggles she remains productive and positive, and an inspiration to Flyleaf lead singer Lacey Mosley. Said Mosley: "She's an awesome person, and you would never guess in a million years that she has the struggle that she has. Kinda changed my perspective about the way that I complain about things, the way that I wake up sad for no reason, and then she wakes up just glad to wake up."

This song is actually about a girl Lacey met named Layla. That's why at the beginning is says "Telling Layla's story spoken." She had a medical condition where she was bed ridden for long lengths of time. But any time she could be out of bed, she was so grateful, and she was thankful for life despite her circumstances. That's what it means when it says "all her bones are broken" and "she's glad for one day of comfort, only because she has suffered." Lacey does have a miraculous testimony herself though of having seen tragedy in her life to fidning hope in Jesus. Her 3 year-old cousin who was like a little brother to her was murdered by his step father, and she was thrown into depression after that happened when she was only 10. Her mom was a single mom with six kids and they had an unstable life growing up in poverty. She saw a lot of other darkness and messed up stuff in her life and got to the point where she decided to commit suicide. But her plans were miraculously interrupted and her Grandma ended up making her go to church. She hated Christianity and didn't want to go, but she conceded to get her grandmother to stop yelling at her. In the church the pastor stopped in the middle of the sermon and started weeping. He said there was a suicidal spirit in the room, and asked if that person could come to the front so they could pray for them. She was embarrassed and didn't go. When the service was over, a man stopped her at the door and said "I feel like the Lord wants me to speak to you. Even though you've never known and earthly father, He will be a better father to you than any earthly father could ever be. He has seen you when you cry yourself to sleep at night." She was shocked because she'd never met this guy and nobody knew she cried herself to sleep every night. He went on to say more prophetic things about her life he couldn't have known except supernaturally. Then he told her the gospel that Jesus died for her to take her pain and sins on Himself. He asked to pray for her, and when he prayed she said she felt the presence of God fill the room, like she was standing in front of Him. She saw herself and all her sins, and it was like her life flashed before her eyes. She saw that God was so holy and expected him to reject her. But she also saw that He was so loving and was accepting her and inviting her to come to Him. That's when she became a Christian and she didn't kill herself. She wrote a book about it called "The Reason". You can also find her giving her testimony on RUclips.

It's been a while since I've really dove into Flyleaf, and I'm glad you're bringing me back to it! Her voice has always been one of my favorites, and they never disappoint with the music and lyrics. I would happily watch you guys go deeper into their discography.
Also, love the interesting facts Eric is giving us. Did you know that lemons are not a naturally occurring fruit? They're a hybrid of the bitter orange and the citron fruit.
All Around Me is my personal favorite from them. The music video is also pretty great

This song resonated in me as a teen with depression in an abusive relationship. And it does now that I’m an adult battling an autoimmune disorder. Flyleaf helped me so much and listening to them made me feel closer to god in my journey for purpose.

flyleaf is my world ever since covid started man . my absolute world is with them i havent heard anything with the other singer but everytime i hear lacys voice idk it just hits me in my heart and i feel connected . and the band dude from a guitarist perspective they hit all the notes i need and have a heavy influence on me . i need more reactions of her last album with them dude . tht album has been a part of these past 2 months and sheesh . my fav song is saving grace man . tht song hits hard

love to see some Flyleaf on here!! I think another band you might love is *Icon for Hire* - they're similar in theme and sound to Flyleaf but the pacing is so rapid and jam packed with crazy verses, it's amazing.

We as Human - Take the Bullets Away features Lacey Sturm, in an interview WaH vocalist Justin Cordle said "I was really torn about it (the collaboration) actually," he admitted. "I absolutely love her vocal, but her screams were so good that she made my screams sound feminine..." We as Human has a bunch of good ones.
