      Haven't we all learned from the *SHOULD BE ILLEGAL* set in the Pika Cup where it had this below that there was potential, though?
      Round 1 Semifinal
      Wrap
      Toxic
      Surf
      Supersonic
      I mean, what all is there that can counter this set without raw bulk letting Tentacruel get off at least one Wrap, Toxic, or Supersonic?
      Edit 9/4/22 It should be noted that *THE ONLY* major instances I actually beat this semifinal was when the Gyarados on their team was brought instead of Tentacruel.

    I remember discussing the Dugtrio rise and subsequent ban years after the generation passed and the person I was talking to just could not understand how in a game with hundreds of pokemon with multiple abilities, moves, items and natures, that some combinations just go unused or even just go under the radar while a certain meta is taking place

    • @itsgonnabeanaurfromme
      @itsgonnabeanaurfromme 2 года назад +5

      A lot of pokemon and combinations aren't used because there are default pokemon typical to use. The variable teams and strategies are few and far between. Just look at the teams in VGC and other metas.

    • @Blackvolttage
      @Blackvolttage 2 года назад +19

      The thing is that with dugtrio, like with most of this video tbh, they are anti-meta picks that rise up when you are playing against a smaller, more dedicated (and usually higher elo) players.
      Dugtrio without team preview was never very strong tbh. It was always seem as a high risk high reward pick, while most of ou is always low risk stuff. But when you stop playing against randos and its well estabilished what are the teams everyone is running, specially when you play against the same people with frequency, dugtrio becomes much better and gives the edge to get around a troublesome counter and get ahead.

  • @gio9255
    @gio9255 2 года назад +15

    Another testament to Moltres' newfound viability are it's career in BW2, USUM and SwSh
    -BW2 gave it hurricane, providing it a niche on rain teams. It never rose to OU in usage but it was a effective check to Volcarona and Ferrothorn in rain which no other mon could do outside of Terrakion.
    -In USUM, it rose from NU to UU. USUM UU was packed with monsters like Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Sharpedo, Starmie, Crawdaunt, Feraligatr, Mega Manectric, and Mega Altaria ready to prey on it's weaknesses. This was also way before heavy duty boots too. Due to it's ability to check steels like Mega Aggron and Scizor and insanely powerful flynium Z hurricane obliterating anything with neutral resistance, it showed it was far more effective than it's weaknesses made it out to be.
    -In SwSh, it spent a brief time in OU due to heavy duty boots removing it's stealth rocks weakness and it's ability to check various threats such as Rillaboom, Kartana, and even Cinderace. It lost hidden power but was still able to prey on fire types that should wall it like Heatrna and Volcanion with scorched sand and Preesure PP stalling with Roost. It also got a regional variant that was extremely dangerous under the right conditions.
    If only it's fellow flying legendary Articuno could get thrown a bone that would skyrocket it's viability. It's regional variant was great in low tiers but now terastalizing may be what something that Articuno needs to finally stand on it's own in higher tiers.

    I’m still hoping for “how good was hidden power actually”, seeing what Pokémon used what sets to what advantages especially back before the physical/special split. I do acknowledge that it could be easily a three hour video though

    • @absoul112

    • @stetsonherrick8090

      A more appropriate question might be is:
      *Is Hidden Power truly worth the ass ache of hunting for the one type you desire most?*
      If it wasn't for Showdown's existence and the means to get the one you want so easy, would people have still wanted it so much the hunt was justified for tournaments?
      I mean, the base Power varied all over without the right IVs and even then, Base 70 at most only goes so damn far.

    Another few honorable mentions I could think of are Breloom and Charizard in ADV OU. While they have always been considered "viable" in OU, they haven't been used *that* much during the current generation metagame. It wasn't until much later that people started to realize that those two are genuine threats and not just situational gimmicks. Brelooms Spore-Sunch shenanigans complitely dominate entire teams and Charizards combination of sheer fire power AND access to focus punch to punish tar and blissey on the switch is just brutal to handle.

    - Top 10 pokemon most in need of a buff
    - Incorrect pokemon predictions
    - How mega evolution impacted the metagame
    - More pokemon type analysis videos like the ice type one
    - The least viable ubers pokemon
    - Most tragic borderline cases on pokemon
    - History of status effects in competitive pokemon
    - A video reviewing an item's competitive prowess, such as "History of life orb"
