  • Bus & Truck Drivers are required to keep a log book when operating beyond 100 miles. Watch the video! D.O.T. Checklist: www.smartdrivetest.com/landin... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
    There are several reasons that CDL drivers can get a log book violation:
    • incorrect information;
    • supporting documents doesn't match the log sheet;
    • or not up to date as of the last change of duty status to name a few.
    Authorities can determine average daily speeds from your log book, and if incorrect you could potentially get a speeding ticket.
    Also, the log book is a legal document and will be used in post-crash investigations, and for tax purposes.
    Good luck on your road test.

    Got a ticket On the Katy Freeway on 9/1/2016 in Houston TX for not having a log book. My truck in a Ford F350 single axle pulling a private 24 foot enclosed trailer. Combined GVWR 23900#. The fine was $175.00

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Richard: Thanks for your comment - sorry to hear about the ticket. Is your vehicle registered in Texas? How far from home were you? I don't know for certain--although I've done a preliminary search--and I believe the GVWR is what designated your vehicle as a commercial vehicle, not the fact that you're using it for personal use. I ran into a similar issue with BC Ferries with a 26' Uhaul truck. Although I was using it for personal use and could drive it with a Class 5 (passenger vehicle) licence, the ferry company deemed it a commercial vehicle due to its licence and registration. Thanks again, Cheers Rick

    Violation improperly filled out days of service. For those that are farm tagged and driving outside your 150 aerial mile radius, your normal working hours count as in service hours and you have to have a separate log sheet for each of those days even though you weren’t driving. So if you have reset after your two nights off but then on Monday and Tuesday you work on the farm and then driving on Wednesday you have to show that on three separate log sheets. This is a relatively new change. Learned this during a recent audit.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  3 года назад

      Hi Randall Cates - thank you for the information my friend. May I ask who audited you? It's my understanding that they can request work sheet hours--separate from a logbook---but those work hours didn't have to be recored in the logbook. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Smart Drive Test The actual person was a Oklahoma State Trooper who works in conjunction with FMCSA. He was a good guy and was helpful. 3 violations over several let to the company audit. No wide load permit outside the 150 hauling hay twice and aTurn signal light which lead to roadside inspections of which one of those was also found a logbook violation. He went over how I was doing my log book.
      Audit was just last month. He did say it was a relatively new change. He told me to show my farm hours in my log book as on duty. I don’t know if this just applies to farm tags. If you like I can get you the troopers email/telephone.

Last time i got a inspection in wyoming over 6yrs ago, officer just looked the logs, thats it....No violations there even tho i was running different times and faster speeds back then.

We need to explain the law to drivers so they completely understand the federal regulations correctly which is paramount. Thank you for your understanding

      Response, miles to air miles, this is how the Federal Regulations are worded per statute. Air miles are measured for Interstate commerce and equal more miles than land travel. Again this is a quick response.

      Hi Johnny Cash - I'm sorry to hear that you have logbook violations. Too often new drivers aren't trained properly by companies and unfortunately it is the new driver that pays financially. I too paid with a few logbook violations at the beginning of my career. There's lots of great information here on the channel about logbooks. Without knowing the specifics of the fine, I would suggest talking to a DOT officer at one of the weigh stations - she/he would by your best source of information. Thanks Cheers Rick

      Hi Frank Ortiz - Thank you for your comment and query. And if you're driving beyond 100M of your home terminal, then yes. If not, you time sheets will suffice for the DOT. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    This dude obviously never drove from AZ to TX. Speed limit is anywhere from 70mph to 80mph along I-10.

      Hi Tablesaw818 - is it the same for both cars and trucks my friend? In many States, there's a split speed limit. All the best, Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest Very few states have separate speed limits for 4 wheelers vs trucks. California is one of them. Trucks are 55mph no matter what highway they are on.

      Ohio once upon a time had a split speed limit. There was a move against these because of the speed differentials & the increased risk of crashes. Cheers Rick

      I live in Michigan and the truck speed limit is 55 or 60 depending the road. And I just traveled to Kentucky and every state I went thru had split speed Limits.

    My truck is governed at 63 miles per hour anyways.
    I thought this was going to show how you fill it out.

      Hi Low Tolerance Level - Even with a truck that governed, if you fill out the logbook incorrectly, you could still potentially get a speeding ticket or a logbook violation my friend. See this vid for filling out the logbook: ruclips.net/video/z75OXuhz-z4/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest I did think about that (incorrect log).
      I definitely will do that.
      I thought I had it down, until my manager stated that I didn't put in each stop.
      Hopefully I'll be a pro after watching.
      Thanks again.

    This had absolutely nothing about filling out the log sheet, I'm surprised you didn't tell me how much psi I need in my tires

      Hi Lance Natsim - Thank you for your feedback. The information around the log sheet is as important--if not more so--than the information on the graph. This is the video you're looking for: ruclips.net/video/G0C3_e4DQMQ/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
      PS - the tire pressure on a big truck or bus is usually 100psi. ;-P
